First, I am using my wife's Yelp account for this review. I have been working in construction management in various capacities and in various trades for about 12 years now. I have done projects for a single residence, to commercial level work as well as for mass transit and up to very high end homes. My mom's roof needed to be replaced, it reached the end of its life and was just starting to leak. While looking for roofers, I decided to give the Yelp reviews a chance and found Stephen Curley Roofing and was impressed by the reviews so I gave him a call to schedule an estimate. I also went with a recommendation from a coworker for a comparison number. Steve was engaging, willing to listen, worked with me to address my concerns about potential items that could arise during the re-roof. Steve was patient and listened to me and provided the estimate to me similar to the way I asked. I was able to decipher it and break it down to analyze the information. Upon receipt of the second estimate, I found that Steve was about 40% less in cost for the project, granted there were some items that were not an 'apple to apple' comparison. Steve also offered a superior warranty. Upon further conversation with Steve, we opted to enter into his agreement for the work. Steve was communicative up to the project and maintained the projected start date. Once the project started, there was daily communication as to what was going on... being in the industry, this is big... The project was completed within the time frame expected and the crew worked hard and did things right. I visited the project 3 of the 4 days they were working on it and I could easily see that they didn't just put a band-aid on items, they took items apart and repaired what needed to be repaired. We all are very happy with the end result as well as the process. I can't wait to be able to provide recommendation for Stephen Curley Roofing to anyone that inquires. I tried to get a quote for a roof repair recently from this company. I spoke to Darlene and detailed the issue. When she mentioned a price, I told her I would need to consult with my wife and get back to them. The next day, I confirmed the order over their answering machine. No response. I got the impression they were not really interested in a small repair job. When I did speak to Mr. Curley, he seemed hostile and annoyed. We scheduled a futher call which he did not keep. When Darlene called the next day to inform me he was ill, she also convey the impression that a small repair was of little interest to them. I thanked her for the call and told her I would seek help elsewhere. I was left with the impression they thought that taking my call was doing me a favor. These folks were recommended to me by friends. Their actual work may be good, but their front office was hostile and indifferent. Maybe they have more work than they can handle right now. They wasted my time and if they were not interested in the work, they should have said so up front. read more

As a solar contractor, I have worked with Steve, Cliff and Isreal many times installing solar side by side with his crew. I am amazed at the attention to detail these guys put into each roof. They do not just install roofing material, they repair the roof. They install all new flashings, painted to match, repair any damage to the roof, looking for dry rot. I remember once in bodega, for a customer who had copper gutters, watching them nail down the roof, when ever they got to the gutter section, they would pull out a brass nail, instead of galvanized - every time - it was amazing. As a contractor, this is the installation quality we strive for and very few companies have it. Recently i had the roof done on my rental unit and got to see the process from the home owners perspective. Cliff and Steve did a great job of looking at the roof and finding potential issues before the roof was removed. The crew that came out was professional and had the roof stripped and on in less then 2 days. They found dry rot near one of the sky lights and a joisted that was also rotting and repaired both of these issues. They even coordinated the gutter guy. I called Stephen Curley Roofing to get an estimate on a new roof. Stephen answered the phone and immediately asked. "Are you the lady who I just talked to?" He seemed rather annoyed. It was not me with whom he spoke, so I continued to inquire about getting an estimate for a new roof. The person whom eventually came out, was very nice. It was Not Stephen Curley. Though I did not get a call to tell me when they would be sending someone out like I was told that I would. The gentleman, (Not Stephen Curley) explained that he was in town as he goes to other cities and just decided to stop by. I prefer to know when a company is planning on sending a stranger to my home. Anyway, I let him proceed. He was very nice. When I was was given an $11K estimate for a home that is 1300 Square Feet I knew that I would not be having them put a roof in my house. I have received other estimates that were far more reasonable, with excellent referrals. My other home in Rohnert Park had a Steele Tile Roof put on it and it is 2300sq Ft and was not much over $11K Price gouging? Perhaps. I did agree that I would like to have them come out and work on the gutters and replace any missing shingles as the man who came out was a nice man and explained what they would do. It would cost $450. So I called Stephen Curley. He had told me that day that everyone in the office has been sick and they didn't have any idea when they could send someone out. At the end of that day! Lisa called and said, "Stephen wants to send someone out tomorrow am."; I told her that I needed a least a few days notice as I had a MRI scheduled at 7:15 am. I would not be home and we were expecting rain that evening. When Lisa called me at the END of the day, Stephen Curley was on the other line so Lisa said "I will call you back after I talk to Stephen. She would explain how I felt to him. She did NOT call and confirm. I waited until 7:00 that evening for her call. I even sent several emails. (Check your emails Stephen) She did not call so I left at 7:00am in the morning to get my MRI prior to a schedule surgery forthcoming. Again. No call back from Lisa. According to Stephen Curley they sent someone out the next day while I was gone. I left at 7:00. I assure you no one was here at 7:00 am. I Either way, I called them today to schedule them to come out as we are having nice weather in Santa Rosa. Stephen left me smart a-- on message on my answering machine. Lisa had apparently told him that I confirmed the above mentioned appointment when in fact I Explicitly DIzd NOT! He basically called me a liar! He was aggressive and very rude. Now I understand why he had asked me if I was the same lady whom talked to him prior with an attitude about him. He comes off nice, and then releases his crass, belligerent, non professional nastiness on his female customers. Perhaps the male ones as well. I am grateful for one thing, that I saw who he was and how he disrespects women and even perhaps men before he was hired to do the gutters. He was disrespectful, unprofessional, shady and rude! I would not have him put a roof on my dog house. Beware. He is nice at first and turns on you at the drop of a hat. read more

Stephen Curley is EXTREMELY UNPROFESSIONAL. He is blatantly rude and disrespectful. He became irate and offended because I referred him to as "Sir" and accusing me of disrespecting him. I tried, on several occasions, to get information from him and he was flat out rude and unwilling to cooperate. He claims to be in business over 20 years. Steve, the owner, is initially pleasant and civil with the ability to talk, and talk, and talk. In fact, he talks so much I'm utterly amazed he actually gets any work done. Unfortunately, he isn't so pleasant and civil when he's received a deposit and you're now locked into a contract with this terrible individual. From the awful carpentry work to the awful guttering contractor he recommends, the entire experience with Steve Curley is just unbelievably horrible. I cannot suggest strongly enough that if you are looking for a roofing contractor, then look else where; anywhere. If you are left with no choice but to use this company, be extremely vigilant and check every line item on the invoices. Being charged $100 for the owner of a contracting company to "check on the progress of the job" is absolutely ridiculous. He will repeatedly state how he "doesn't advertise", and how he's "word of mouth only", in a manner that suggests he's some sort of elitist craftsman; he isn't at all. Our roof had damage from the Glass fire. We couldn't see any damage from the street, but Stephen Curley's company came out, took a ton of photos which we sent to our insurance company. Insurance was impressed with their documentation of the damage and agreed that we needed a new roof. I was pleased that our new roof only took about a day and a half to complete. Curley's crew arrived on time, removed the old roof, made it water tight for the evening's rain, and installed the new roof early the next morning. The foreman explained all the steps and answered all my many questions. Then they cleaned up everything, even walking a large magnet all around the house to pick up any stray nails or staples that might have fallen into our mulch. Great job. I hired Stephen to do the roof on my house a few years ago, so when I needed a roof on my garage I didn't hesitate to call him. My first experience with him was fine, but this last experience was horrible. I echo the sentiments of others here and on Google Reviews about his demeanor: he is rude, hostile, aggressive and highly unprofessional. (As is some of this office staff.) When I expressed to him my dissatisfaction with the gutters (they slope upward, toward the roof, forming a slight V at the roof edge) he got upset with me, told me they were "functional," that it was "only a garage," told me that if it were him, he would not re-do the work, and finally blamed me because I was at home during the work and should have said something to his crew. (I DID say something once the gutters had been put on, but his crew left before the gutter man put on the gutters and no one came out to inspect the finished job.) We had two tense phone conversations, and in the last one he kept interrupting me to the point where I finally had to ask him to stop interrupting so that I could finish my sentence to which he replied, "You're not a psychiatrist!" and when I asked him again to please stop interrupting me, he said, "this is not a psyche-eval!" At that point I knew I wasn't dealing with someone who could have a calm and rational conversation, so I said nothing else. He testily said he would come out and re-cut the rafters but that I had to tell him THAT night and that he could only come out the next morning because he didn't want this "hanging out there." I quietly told him that I had to go and would call him later to which he replied, "Oh, now I see who I am dealing with." After much contemplation, I decided NOT to have him come back and fix the rafters so that the gutters would lay flush against the roof because I sensed that I could no longer trust him or his crew to re-do the work satisfactorily, nor did I believe that I could communicate calmly and rationally with him. There are roofing companies that treat their clients with respect, that listen to them and work to resolve issues in a responsible, reasonable and professional manner. My recommendation would be to search for other roofing professionals before hiring this company. read more

Stephen is one of the rudest, least professional contractors I've tried to work with. I was forwarded to Stephen to replace my roof and fix a small leak. Interestingly a General Contractor asked me to "try him out" to see if he should use him. A friend of mine also had used him. So all in all, he and I have lots of good reasons to work with each other. The leak fix has to come first because the roof can't be replaced until after the rains. I spoke to Darlene was was amazing and told me they could do the would work in 1-2 weeks. I then stopped finding someone else to fix my problem. Stephen called with some clarifying questions. This is a key point. Darlene asked me to send a check for $350 and she committed to doing the work for me. Stephen called to ask some questions. He was short, curt and impolite. It was highly strange. I didn't understand one of the questions he asked so I asked a clarifying question. This is when he flipped out and told me to just answer his question. I re-asked my question but he told me he didn't want to do the work and that I should just answer his question. I'm not sure if it was just because maintenance projects are a pain for him (he told me this) or whether he just didn't have the patience to answer my questions. Either way, he withdrew his offer to fix my roof. The big problem with this is that I have a leak and I now need to go back to the process of finding another firm. I do not believe for one minute Stephen felt he was under any obligation to deliver on his company's promise. Interestingly, there are so many great Yelp scores for the company, but there are also signs of the problem I experienced with others citing the exact same problem. It seems like your experience is binary. I'm sure he's a good roof guy when he wants to do the work and you don't ask him any questions, but my message is buyer beware! read more

He was extremely professional, conscientious, responsive to after hours communications via Yelp and took a lot of his time to educate me on my options and what my roof genuinely required. I have a flat roof which requires completely different treatment than a normal A-frame roof. Stephen really cares about his business and his customers. For example, he came out more than once to try to fix my leaky roof in advance, in the rain too!. Also, two days before the new installation he came and double checked again to make sure they were well prepared for the day of installation. We recently decided to install solar on our home and in the process it was decided that it was best to first put a new roof on our home. Our solar contractor highly recommended Stephen Curley Roofing so we interviewed this company, along with several others, and we in fact wound up hiring them. Stephen and his assistants know the roofing business and we really appreciated their expertise. They guided us through the process of selecting the best shingles for our home. They were always professional, helpful and polite. The whole process of removing the old shingles and replacing the new ones was organized with great precision and finesse. Dumpsters were installed, materials delivered and refuse hauled away in a timely and efficient manner. Our home and yard were left immaculate after they were done, which was greatly appreciated. What we especially liked was the attention to detail of the crew....They found some areas that were in need of attention, and actually did the extra work that was found in need of repair and didn't charge us! Pretty amazing in this day and age! While we are all hoping for rain to help end the drought here in CA, there was a prediction of rain for the days of our project. Needless to say, as homeowners, we were quite concerned about this. The last thing we wanted was for the shingles to have been removed and our roof damaged by a storm. But no need to worry with Stephen on your side. You see, we learned that Stephen is quite adept at reading the radar and weather forecasts and has a 100% percent success rate of making the correct call of when to begin and when NOT to begin a project.........And it worked out just fine for us....... I was referred to Steve by the Solar company we are currently working with on our house. Like some of the other reviews here, my interactions with Steve started out ok. He informed me he was very "in demand" and gave me the impression i should feel privileged that he would even look t my home project as he was so busy he didnt need more work. I get it, i work in the commercial construction world and understand how busy everyone is right now. Cliff his foreman was terrific to deal with conversely. Cliff gave us a bid and we signed the contract, made our deposit, and waited until the date to start would arrive. I should mention we hired them because we are looking to do a Solar Project and needed the roof to be redone prior to the solar project. Well about 4 days before the roof was to be installed, we get an email from the Solar guy asking if they could put up their hardware before the new roof would be put on. I agreed to this without thinking much about it. Solar guys install their mounting hardware, then new roof goes on and we get a final invoice for an additional $1910!! Steve was kind enough to discount that down to only an additional $1700. Turns out that when the roofing company installs a new roof over Solar hardware they charge $50 per mount to put flashing around it. This is my bad in that i didnt re-read the contract when the solar guy asked me to place his hardware first. If i had re-read the contract i would have seen that line item #2 does state they (the roofers) will charge for that. Point that gets me most fried is when i called to talk with steve about this, no calls back, but another invoice hits me. I speak with Cliff and he is very understanding. My point to him is that NO ONE advised us that if we were to do this, it would be an additional cost. The outward message was "its in the contract" As one who works in the Commercial Construction Industry locally, if i change a contract and subsequently raise the price on the end user- i had better damn well advise them of this! Front-end arrogance, lack of ethical advising, and back-end attitude. There are many other better options for your roofing needs, i can suggest a few! read more

We hired Stephen Curley Roofing to replace the original, worn and leak-damaged 28-year-old roof of our vacation home in Bodega Bay. Even though we contacted Stephen during the busiest time of year for the roofing industry, Stephen worked us into his schedule, knowing we were concerned about new leaks during the winter rains. We never met Stephen or his crew in person, but every phone call and email interaction we had was professional and courteous. Stephen took the time to explain the process, and he kept us informed before, during and after the job. Not only did he complete the job as promised, he even took care of some extra issues that arose, at a very reasonable price, to make sure that the job was done well and that we would be satisfied. You may find a cheaper bid (I actually had lower bids from other roofers but felt more comfortable that Stephen Curley would do the job right so we went with them). I promise you will not find anyone who knows his stuff better than Stephen. His entire crew impressed me from start to finish. When the solar panel company started to renege on our agreement, Stephen went to bat for us! When the crew encountered some needed repairs they just took care of it! His crew showed up when promised, were neat and took care to protect the property and cleaned up everything as they worked. He was extremely rude and unprofessional and essentially hung up the phone on me after falsely assuming that all I wanted was a patch-job.
