I brought in a pair of heels for a repair , and Julian was friendly and helpful when I dropped them off. A few days later , I got a call that the shoes were ready to be picked up. When I arrived and gave my ticket , Julian brought the shoes over and took them out the bag so I could inspect the work that was done. Came here bc my other shoe cobbler went out of business. The location was pretty easy to find and when I walked in I was immediately greeted with a smiling face I believe he said his name was John. I needed to have some heels cut down, some heel plates replaced and I also had a leather purse that I wanted clean/conditioned. John informed me that he could clean it but it would be cheaper if I bought the cleaner and cleaned it myself (they sell it in the store) and he also told me that my heels could not be cut down and went on to explain in detail why, even though I was bummed that I couldn't get my heels cut down and my purse cleaned I was happy that he didn't just take my money. I was happy that he was able to replace my heel plates, but I did think the price was a bit steep at $20 but I really don't know what it should have cost and maybe I'm just cheap. I wish I had taken a "before" photo...suffice it to say that the clerk went "Oh my gosh...wow" when I put these on the counter!! I alternated between these pairs pretty much daily whenever it was remotely cool/chilly out, and it showed. For a reasonable price (definitely much less than one good quality new pair), Stern's fixed up my heels and polished away the uneven colored spots on the uppers. It took about a week, I was in no rush since we are still in sandal season. The staff was friendly and parking is super easy. I will definitely be back! read more

Before I started polishing my own shoes, I took multiple shoes to Sterns to be professionally shined. My last experience, the manager was honest and told me there was no way to add pigment to a pair of France made shoes that I had messed up. I appreciated the honesty and integrity. This is as good as it gets! I recently had the good fortune of finding this online shoe repair business. I live in Santa Barbara, we're not a very big town, and our cobblers seem to be going out of business one by one. I tried to shop local, honestly I did. I went to both of the remaining cobblers with my favorite black suede booties in need of a new zipper. Both refused, "I don't do zippers." I do a lot of shopping online, and it occurred to me that somewhere in the country there must be someone who would be willing and able to fix my shoes. After screening several options, I found this one, which goes by Cobblers Bench Shoe Repair or Stern's Shoe Repair. While there was an additional cost for shipping, I didn't think it was unreasonable given the time it would take me to deliver and pick up locally, if only I had a local option. I really appreciated being able to keep using my shoes, rather than throwing them away. And the communication between the cobbler and his office manager was excellent. They are real people, people who actually answer the phone, rather than an endless phone tree of recorded messages. I also had them fix my boyfriend's 20-year old belt at the same time. Would not recommend. Brought a pair of leather work boots here to be resoled. One hundred dollars later the soles are falling off my boots. Stitching around the you're was replaced for show, but didn't actually tie the sole to the upper. Sole is coming competent detached from the upper at the heel, nails are popping out of the insole inside the boot as well. Hopefully a different cobbler will be able to repair what these folks did. read more

I wish there was a way to give less than one star. I brought a pair of boots here to have the soles replaced. Instead of just replacing the sole, they also dyed the wood base on the boot. Now the whole look of the boot is changed and ruined. What once was a casual boot is now a combat boot. Who does that? What made it worse is when the guy just shrugged it off like it was nothing. read more
