Growing up in Austin I have visited many different dermatologists in the area and Dr. Rasmussen and his staff are by FAR the best. The staff is friendly, courteous, professional and make you feel comfortable as soon as you walk through the door. The office is modern, very clean, and the environment feels more like a spa than a physician's office. Dr. Rasmussen is the nicest, most personal physician I have ever visited. The first time I went in he patiently listened to the results I wanted and the services I desired, but steered me in another less expensive direction. I was extremely happy with the results and found it refreshing to find a doctor that listens to their patients and truly has their best interests in mind. I look forward to my next visit. read more

I came in seeking a consultation, my skin looked tired, dry, itchy and RED. I had seen a dermatologist years before who had diagnosed me as having rosacea. I have tried everything to get rid of the red! It gets so red and inflamed that it feels like a sunburn and then breaks out. I have had photofacials , tried modifying my diet, using special makeup, and then just resigned myself that I was getting old and my skin was going to look kind of crappy all the time . That week, my skin had become so red and itchy I could not take it anymore. I scheduled a free consultation. The doctor took one look at my skin and told me that I did not have rosacea at all but another skin condition. He made time to see me for a medical consultation, and squeezed me in (even with a lobby full of patients). Given how itchy and inflamed my skin was, I really, really appreciate him for not making me wait until an opening to deal with the issue. The price was incredibly affordable and I walked away with some great samples and a prescription. I went home and immediately used the wash and topical cream. I saw an immediate improvement! I felt so much better. My skin felt cool and the redness started going away . The next day, there was a little bit of redness and irritation but my skin felt soft, looked soft, and how I remembered it had looked about four years ago! It is starting to get that glow back and I cannot thank Dr. Rasmussen enough for making the time to see me and for being so pleasant and knowledgeable. I woke up this morning and did not have to cake on my usual routine of coverup, foundation, yellow powder, extra moisturizers and bio oil to combat the dryness and redness today. My skin was soft, hydrated, and looked great. It was affordable, it was quick ,it was professional ! I cannot wait to go back because I know any skin issues will be addressed quickly and correctly . The office is clean and very nice. The staff is extremely nice. He saw me for a problem and didn't get back in the time frame that he had stated. I called, but the office didn't have an answering machine and it was before hours, so I wrote a negative review. Dr. Rasmussen emailed me and called me apologizing sincerely for my bad experience. A Doctor who cares that much gets my vote. He told me that he values constructive criticism and was sorry that he failed me as a provider. He didn't fail me, since he did solve my problem. I was very impressed that he cared enough to contact me about my initially negative experience. Its so difficult to give a negative review when everyone else seems to have had such a great experience with the doctor. My visit was not based on vanity but a skin disorder that I've been suffering with since about 6 years old. I walk in and the staff was very nice. Gave me the information on what I needed to get myself going but the experience with him was not that great. I know he is a very highly sought after doctor and getting appointments can be months in advance but when you go to someone for the first time, questions need to be asked and answered. I felt like my problem was nothing and there was not medical history asked or what was going on. My appointment was literally 10 minutes long and I was giving a topical and antibiotic. There was no real examination nor was there any real talk about alternative treatments or what could help me deal with this through adulthood. Literally it was like a quickie appointment and no one got anything out of it. I chose this location because they were open later than normal business hours and were right off of Mopac (near 3rd Base sports bar). I had to get something looked at and was treated very well by the entire staff, including the doctor. They were very kind and professional and I was made to feel very comfortable. They even squeezed me in the day before my insurance runs out so that they could follow up, even though they technically didn't have any openings until a week later. The only thing that could be considered a negative would be the fact that they are so busy that it's hard to get an appointment, so if you need something done quickly, make sure you call as soon as you can. read more

Dr. Rasmussen spent less than three minutes in the office with me (one of which was doing charting on the computer). I went in for skin discoloration on my face and to get some moles looked at. The full body check took approximately 30 seconds. Going to Dr. Rasmussen was a complete waste of my time. He did recommend a cream for my skin discoloration at $67. I found this same cream online for $40. Don't waste your time or money. read more

He walks in asks me why I'm there and has his assistant hand me some pamphlets on eczema, then began to leave... I was absolutely STUNNED.! He didn't even address the reason why i came in! Actually he hardly spoke to me, but not before asking to "look at the back of my legs"! Hello! the problem was with my hands you inappropriate rude pervert! I felt so angry and violated! He took just a few seconds to actually look at my skin! A dermatologist looking at skin.... Oh the thought! I was so confused. The ladies in the front were very sweet and welcoming. I had heard that they didnt have the best customer service BUT THE PROBLEM WAS THIS JERK DOCTOR! All he seemed to care about is shuffling people through and making as much money as possible.Especially if you have insurance!! I was charged more than $275 on my insurance for less than five minutes of this quack's time! My first appointment here was great. The lady at the front desk was super nice, the lobby was welcoming and clean and my wait was not that long. They even apologized for me having to wait at all. Dr. Rasmussen was friendly and explained everything to me, he gave me cell number in case i needed anything and couldn't get in touch with his assistant, I thought that was great. I have never been to a dermatologist in my life. I have never had skin problems ever. I recently broke out in eczema and went to see Dr. R. I was a little nervous because I had read some of the mixed reviews here on Yelp prior to my visit. I was pleasantly surprised! The staff were amiable and Dr. R had the best bedside manner! He even took the time to answer a random question I had about a burn scar on my leg. They didn't try to push any products and the meds he prescribed only cost $6! read more

Very unimpressed. I went in for a strange spot on my leg, and he barely glanced at it - said it was eczema. Never had eczema before. I doubt I was in the office 5 minutes. I finally went to my family doctor because it got worse. She said it was staph and put me on Cipro. It is now better. I have to pay for office visits out of pocket, and I was not happy to have wasted my money. I don't like the roll 'em in and roll 'em out approach. read more

I went to Dr. Rasmussen's office because of chronic acne. A review of the place: the staff are so nice. The location is great (right at 6th and Mopac.) The inside is beautiful, clean, etc. etc. They have the environment mastered. Dr. Rasmussen knows his stuff. His delivery is very much blunt... a little too blunt for me. I told him specifically I did not want to take Accutane, but he was very pushy on it, and finally I caved since I have no other dermatologist to go to (I go to UT and have no car. It's the only one I can find downtown.) There have been times when I went in KNOWING I improved and all he would say is "You're not getting better. Accutane." and turn around. I broke down crying in his office because he would not listen to me at all, and he basically told me I had no choice but it. I've gotten other opinions on this to make sure I'm not overreacting, and even though I'm definitely upset because it's not what I want to hear, I went to other dermatologists for a second or third opinion and they were a LOT nicer about it and were even willing to make other accommodations for it. So the place is awesome, his assistants and receptionists are awesome, but if you aren't thick skinned, would like to avoid Accutane, or have a car, I'd recommend shopping around. read more

Absolutely horrible! I have had these random spots all over my face for over a year. They weren't pimples and they weren't a rash so I decided to finally go see a professional to figure out what was going on. Man did I go to the wrong place! THE DOCTOR DIDNT EVEN LOOK AT MY SKIN! He walks in, reads directions for a new face wash routine off a clip board, then began to leave... I was absolutely STUNNED. He didn't even address the reason why i came in! So I stopped him and asked him about the dots on my face. He takes about ten seconds to actually looks at my skin, crazyyy right? A dermatologist looking at skin.... Anyways he says something about facial warts, hands me a pamphlet, barely adjusts the routine, tells me I may have to get them frozen off, then leaves... WHAT? FACIAL WARTS? FROZEN OFF? I was so confused, these slight bumps on my face looked nothing like warts but he was the doctor right? So I decide to follow the routine he gave me and see what happens... BIG MISTAKE. My entire face turned red and started to peel, a huge blister formed on my chin, which then scabbed over, and the bumps are STILL THERE. I had heard that they didnt have the best customer service BUT THIS WAS RIDICULOUS! All they care about here is shuffling people through and making as much money as possible. I have gone to Dr. Rasmussen and I have taken both my daughter and my son to Dr. Rasmussen for several years now. I highly recommend him and the three of us have very different needs. Dr. Rasmussen does not rush any of us and answers all of our questions completely and accurately. He won my complete trust on my daughter's first visit when he nailed the correct diagnosis (perioral dermatitis) after I had taken her to three other (closer) dermatologists who missed the diagnosis and caused us to unnecessarily pull my daughter out of school and waste money on prescriptions that did not work. After Dr. Rasmussen's diagnosis and using the correct medicine, the perioral dermatitis cleared up in less than two days and did not come back. My daughter has severe acne and had gone through two prior dermatologists to try to solve this unsightly problem. Those dermatologists both prescribed different dosages of Accutane, only for us to find out 3 - 6 months after each treatment that they did not work. Over the course of years, we had given up. However, Dr. Rasmussen recommended a high dose treatment that is completely working. My daughter is now in college and Dr. R goes above and beyond, personally returning her calls after hours. Finally, my daughter had an unsightly red scar on her forehead. Dr. R was able to laser it right in the office. We drive 45 minutes each way in Austin traffic to see Dr. Rasmussen and he is worth it. read more

I went to see Dr. Rasmussen regarding several skin issues I've been dealing with for a few years now. I was hoping to get clarification and instead left feeling defeated and unheard. I had started seeing pits in my nails and they began separating from the nail bed and a chalky substance was forming underneath them. Along with this I had spots on my scalp, shin, armpits, buttock and face to which he said they weren't related to the other areas on my body or my nails. He said the issue with my nails was due to the fact that I was getting older, there was no treatment plan and that it was just "bad luck". He prescribed some topical steroids and shampoo for my other spots and sent me on my way. With the aid of the prescriptions I saw mild results but they soon got worse. I returned for another appointment a month or so later and when I presented the same issues he then became visibly annoyed with me. He made me feel stupid for wanting a solution. He was dismissive and callus. He just wanted to throw a prescription at me and get me out so he could move on to the next patient. After doing tons of research myself and seeing a dermatologist who specializes in psoriasis I finally got the answers I've been looking for and a treatment plan that's going to work. When they told me that all of the spots on my body were psoriasis and that it can be treated I started to cry from relief. This was all I wanted. An answer. An answer Dr. Rasmussen couldn't give me because he didn't want to. read more

I had a visit to get a prescription for a topical medication. I was the first person of the day and I was in and out quickly which is what I appreciate since I work full time. Dr. Rasmussen answered my questions and was quick and to the point. He even prescribed me something else and recommended the BP facewash that he has. Just used the facewash and it didn't irritate my skin AT ALL and will most likely also purchase the vitamin C serum. I've used other BP washes that all irritate my face. It's so amazing my boyfriend likes it and I'm going to buy him some also. I also needed a different strength of my medication- called him at 5:30pm (expecting to leave a VM). He answered right away! He walked out of his office already but went back to send a new script over to the pharmacy. That's so awesome and he did not need to do that after business hours. Pretty much everything I expected out of a visit and more. I'm honestly extremely happy and I never write reviews if that's any insight. read more

I can only add to the negatives posted here. The doc was very cavalier and hasty with both me and my wife. I specifically wanted to get checked out after having spent time in Saudi Arabia for basal skin cancers, of which I have a history. There was a place on my back I was suspicious about, because I know my skin. Rasmussen looked at it briefly and stated it was nothing. A couple months later I had a biopsy taken at a different dermatologist and found out it was in fact a basal. That is worse than being casual or inattentive, that is dangerous. read more

I wish I could give this place zero stars. Short story: DO NOT GO TO HIM--He is not worth your time, because he does not give you any of his time. They just want your money. I wonder why a person like him even is a doctor--he obviously loathes talking to people--he should be in a lab somewhere. Dr. Rasmussen is the worst experience I have ever had with a doctor. I came to write a review just in order to prevent other people from having the same bad experience. Here is my story: I don't have bad acne. I only get a few pimples here and there on my face every so often, but I was having a little breakout on my forehead and I had never seen a dermatologist, so I decided to take the extra step and see one. I think Rasmussen literally spent less than five minutes in the room with me. Right when he came in, he immediately made a rude comment on how bad my face looked and that I needed to buy some products. I had one pimple on my forehead! It really wasn't bad at all but I thought, OK, maybe the stuff will help. I tried to get more information from him, and he just prescribed me a bunch of stuff very quickly (I remember thinking, should I actually buy this stuff? He's obviously doing a quick car salesman job trying to make me feel bad about my skin, when really, my skin is pretty good!.) I really was just stressed about having any pimples at all for my upcoming wedding. He prescribed acne wash with 10% benzoyl peroxide, cindamycin phosphate topical gel 1%, and tretinoin cream, .05% usp, all of which I bought but think were quite unnecessary for me and have not improved my skin at all--in fact, it made my skin worse. More pimples pop up after I use the acne wash and the cream makes my skin very dry (I normally have no problem with dry skin.) I also asked Rasmussen to check my moles, which I have never had checked. I have fair skin, some freckles, and a good amount of moles on my arms and a few here and there all over my body, so I thought it was important to check them--apparently he did not because he BARELY looked at me. I took the time to get undressed for nothing. He didn't actually inspect my moles--how could he have? He said I was fine but he didn't even move an inch or come near me--he couldn't see half of them by just standing in front of me a foot away! I literally had to say things like, "I have one here," for example, in a place you cannot see, especially since I was sitting down, and he still didn't even examine. I really don't see how he could have confidently told me anything about my health or skin because he literally took less than one minute to look at me and say, "OK." I felt like saying, "YOU DIDN'T EVEN DO ANYTHING!" And now I wish I would have. Another issue I had was a plantar wart on the bottom of my foot. I actually had to ask the nurse to please have the doctor come back to examine it for me because HE LEFT SO QUICKLY from my appointment without asking if I needed anything else or had any questions. Ha, if this guy has answered anyone's questions in depth, ever, I would be surprised. I think he most likely is a sexist, and I remember feeling bad for the nurses who work for him, but I won't judge too harshly, considering I only saw him for about FIVE MINUTES. So I asked him about the treatments for the wart, told him I had got the freezing treatment for it a year ago but it hadn't worked, and he quickly told me he was going to freeze it. I knew there were some other ways to treat it, so I asked him if it would work and if it would hurt, and he said, "Not really." So he did the freezing treatment, and it was quite PAINFUL. I am OK with pain, but I like to be warned that it will hurt especially when I have to drive myself home. I could barely walk on my foot afterward and I could barely drive home (I drive a stick shift, and it was VERY PAINFUL to use my foot at all.) It was painful to walk on for a whole week actually, and the treatment didn't even work. The wart came back so I went back to see Dr. R and he said he thought it was gone but this time I told him no, it was still there, obviously, under the skin-YOU COULD SEE IT! So I had to go through the same pain all over again and it STILL DIDN'T WORK. Since then, I have seen a different doctor, who told me that Dr. R should have cut the skin back and done multiple treatments in order to get rid of the wart. Instead, Dr. R left me feeling hopeless, as if I would have to live with the wart forever, thinking that treatments just don't work, when in reality, he WASN'T DOING HIS JOB RIGHT. Basically, this is a doctor who doesn't care and doesn't give you the time of day, so why would you go to him? I have never taken the time to write a review about anything, but I am for this, because I care about people and I don't want them to have the same lousy experience--DO NOT USE THIS PLACE! Dr. Rasmussen is great as well as his staff and especially the laser technician Marcy. They're efficient and awesome, I was a patient for several years while living in Austin. I would definitely recommend going here for laser or really any general dermatology related needs. Yes, the initial consultation is super quick. That is because they're efficient, they know what they're doing and they schedule the follow up depending on your needs so they don't keep you there forever when you first go to seek their services. waste of time / money My first "appointment" consisted of Dr. Rasmussen giving me a questionnaire and telling me to get bloodwork done and come back in 2 weeks. After waiting over a month for this first appointment it was very frustrating to have my time and money wasted. I feel like I could've been told over the phone in the month before my appointment to have the bloodwork /questionnaire done so that treatment or even a diagnosis could be made at the time of my first visit. After suffering for 6 weeks with a terrible eczema outbreak and waiting for an appointment (I didn't have the "direct" line and the clinic scheduling is ridiculous, his immediate response was "Wow, you're a mess." Yes, duh, that is why I'm here. And thanks for the sympathy! And yes, my whole body is inflamed and I've had moderate chronic pain with this dang skin for the last six weeks. It's been awful. But no - I didn't say that or "Thanks for the understanding." Later, his reaction to my questioning about how to avoid products/chemicals that are obviously triggering me? You have eczema. You're just going to have sudden regular outbreaks for forever. Nothing you can do about it. After talking with my nurse practitioner derm friend - he is wrong. There is a skin/chemical test that's $$, but available. He basically gave me no hope for ever feeling better. Plus he was rude & condescending. I went several times because I liked the regime he put me on for maintenance, but I finally found a better doctor. I couldn't take his superiority complex anymore. He obviously doesn't know what it's like to be someone who suffers from chronically painful skin, or if he does know, he doesn't show it. I could give more examples.. Like when I had terrible skin troubles on my hand and he told me to moisturize more. ??? This time I did reply, I told him I have moisturizers and prescribed creams next to my kitchen sink, in my car, and in my work desk. I apply all with regularity, do you not understand I've had this all my life and do all I can?.... He didn't have another suggestion. read more

Today was the first time I had seen a dermatologist in a while, I heard about Dr. R and decided to give him a try big mistake. The office staff is amazing but Dr. R made me feel rushed as though he didn't care nor did he have the time. I will definitely see another dermatologist and get a second opinion. He literally looked at my skin for a total of 2 seconds literally, he didn't ask any questions nor did he care to explain to me what could have caused my skin issue. After going to a couple of different dermatologist over the years, giving diagnoses ranging from eczema, psoriasis, and prescribing many different types of creams, light therapy and a doctor trying to get me to go on Taltz for something minor. I went to Dr. Rasmussen... he knew right away what my shin condition was and It's a minor thing and he first gave me a brochure with my exact issue and then some cortisone shots. Dr. Rasmussen misdiagnosed a rash on my ankle. After 9 months of steroid creams & injections I decided to get a second opinion. After a simple skin scraping it was determined that the rash was a fungus which is simple to treat. Dr. Rasmussen never mentioned this as a possibility nor did he ever test for it. The steroids left my skin very thin in the area. Another reason I left was after he gave me a skin cancer check that lasted about 1 minute. I have a history of melanoma and have been to couple other dermatologists so I was shocked when he did not record or measure any moles. I would never go back to him. read more

I think the answer to some of the complaints is he's too busy. I've never understood the medical profession's practice of scheduling appointments 15 minutes apart. I think it's called "greed." The first time we went, I felt like he blew my son off. Prescribed him retinol, if you can believe that (my son is 13) and then had the audacity to tell me was $4 at Walmart. Even I knew that wasn't true. The second time we demanded better attention and better focus on the doctor's part. Of course, the only answer is to jam steroids down my kid's throat, but at least it's helping. I've yet to find a dr. anywhere in America that understands what customer service is all about, so I don't necessarily hold it against Dr. R. Just an example of how you have to be incredibly pro-active when it concerns your health care. Some of these skin conditions can be treated at AOMA in Austin. They take a different approach. Rather than dealing with symptoms, they work to discover the real cause of the skin affiction, i.e. do some people with eczema have a food intolerance, or intolerance to something else. Eos' Dr. R. didn't even mention that it might be caused by an allergy. But if he does, you see, he doesn't get to prescribe the latest greatest meds so he can win the annual prescription company trip to Jamaica or Bermuda or where ever they'll send the doctors who prescribe the most for "continuing education," aka golfing trip. Please don't try to deny it. read more
