If you're looking for an honest mechanic who gives a damn, go to Steven's Auto Service! This is both a STELLAR review for Steven's and a bad review for Valvoline in Derry. See below! ***Edit to Update at the end of this review. Valvoline made things right*** I had my last oil change done at Valvoline in Derry & they up-sold me on doing the transfer case. Unfortunately they told me that they weren't able to do the transfer case because they stripped the screw/drain plug and since they didn't have a correct size replacement for my car, they tightened it back up (or so they said) and said that at some point I should go to the dealer to have that serviced and they'd reimburse me on the cost of the plug thingy. They also said this was a "when you have time thing" and not an immediate need. This morning I heard a whirring sound when I turned a corner... heard it again at another corner... then didn't hear it anymore. THEN heard it any time I accelerated from a stop. I hoped maybe I was just low on power steering fluid and that it was not a wheel bearing or something, so I stopped by Steven's Auto and asked if they had time to check the fluid level for me, which they did, and it was fine. They offered to take my car for a drive and the manager heard the sound I heard! I was happy that at least I wasn't crazy and they put it on the lift for me. A few minutes later they called me into the bay to stand under my car (you know THIS is NEVER good!) and the drain plug was gone! It must've been loosening and rattled itself off!! I had NO oil in the gear box and the transfer case was empty (or something like that). They told me my car was un-drive-able and urged me to call Valvoline and they offered to talk to them for me! (What other mechanic does that!?) Valvoline's manager said he's going to review footage from that day of them changing my oil & get back to me (update, it's been several hours and no one has called me back). So my car is on the lift and not drive-able so of course I'm panicking, right?! And then this mechanic comes around the corner with a screw for an O2 sensor, puts a copper washer on it and screws it in - and it FITS!!! Talk about great improvisational skills! They fill my car with oil, take it for a drive and the sound is gone. So, it's driveable still for now. I have no idea if more damage happened, but they said as long as the sound doesn't come back, it should be ok & they said they'd look at it again for me in a week to recheck it, which is above & beyond service! Steven's Auto's manager, Jon didn't even want to charge me for any of this!!! I insisted on paying for it - because you better believe Valvoline is going to reimburse me for this BS!! I am so lucky and grateful that I heard the noise, didn't ignore it, had time to stop there, and they had time to look at it today! I mean, seriously a lucky day! Thank you, Steven's Auto!! ***Edit to Update*** The manager of Valvoline in Derry, Steven completely owned Valvoline's mistake that caused the damage to my car and the company covered the cost of the repairs and a rental car. I am new to this area, but due to some issues with my Audi Q5 I stopped at this station already 3 times (2 times unplanned), and every single time they were very kind and accommodating. My pre-planned inspection visit was quick and efficient. John seems to be very knowledgeable and honest. I never felt as if he was trying to sell me services I don't need, quite the opposite. I pass by their station pretty often, and always see different cars parked there. Jon did a great job of letting me know what I should tune up before the drive and even helped me map out some of the trip when we were finishing up the paperwork! So the owner, Andrew, sent me this message after reading my review on his establishment: "for starters would never sell you a 350$ fuel filter service if i did not think that would fix your problem, your car is 9 years old it needs to be looked at and diagnosed, mini has no change interval for that filter! to bash my company like this is not acceptable!! have reported you to yelp and the next step will be a legal one!!" Here is my reply: I was in your shop for maybe 10 minutes. I stopped in to get a price for a specific product -- my car did not have a "problem." First, you tried telling me fuel filters in mini's can't be changed (that's wrong) then you tried to sell me a tune up, then new plugs, new air filter and then you asked about my radiator fluid and oil changes. It was pretty unbelievable because all I wanted was a NEW FUEL FILTER. You are the one who tried selling me stuff that I didn't need and then you patronized me like I don't know my own mind or my car. FYI: My car runs fine -- it only has 68,000 miles on it. I simply thought a new fuel filter would be a good idea. A very BAD idea was stepping in your frickin' shop! Believe me, I'll never do that again. So go ahead, hire a lawyer and try to come after me for giving my honest opinion. Your threats do not worry me. As a matter of fact, I'm going to add this conversation to my review! Since I was a teenager I have always had high mileage cars (purchased with 70k+) and Steven's has kept them safely on the road for me. My VW Golf went to 215,000 miles and my Mitsubishi Galant ran solid at 160,000 until somebody hit me and totaled it. Now I finally have a new car (Scion FR-S) but I still bring it to them for anything not covered by scion service boost, usually for installing aftermarket upgrades. Was referred there by a friend of a friend, Broke belt was towed there, repaired belt, then power steering pump went, fixed that then the thermostat went, fixed that but the heat didnt work still, took back and they replaced the thermostat that they put in with a better quality one gave the heater core a flush got the heat going so hot its great now! I liked them originally because they could work on an unusual (older) import I had, but eventually stopped taking my business to them. They seemed to get pretty expensive, had a bit of an attitude (in an old New England car repair style I've seen before) and, the biggest issue, would give me bills with just a total and zero itemization. I want to give a shout out to Steven's Foreign Auto in Derry!!! They are a great bunch of guy that took care of what turned out to be a very minor situation with my windshield washer fluid mechanism but was a major problem in this weather. It turned out that a valve was stuck so no fluid was getting to the front windshield washer. I pulled in with no appointment and asked if they could please check it for me. The took my car in immediately and within 2 minutes they had it resolved!!! Now they could have charged me $20 or more dollars if they wanted to but they wished me a Merry Christmas and wouldn't accept any money no how hard I tried to give them some!!! That is what I call customer service!!! I have had work done there before and I will absolutely go there again. I can't recommend them enough!!! So if you need mechanical service or auto body work, please go see the guys at STEVEN'S FOREIGN AUTO IN DERRY!!! I can't say enough about Andrew the owner and the service that he gives. Since I am a woman most auto shops would try to take advantage of that, and play on the fact that I know very little about cars which means overcharging me in labor and telling me all other things are wrong with my car and making me pay more than what I can really afford. He changed my spark plugs for me one day while I was on a 30 minute lunch break and had it done in 10 minutes. What this means is I didn't have to find somebody to take me to drop off my car and wait for hours to get my car back. I appreciate that kind of service. If you call him and say hey there's something wrong with my car he says get it down here we'll look at it. I can at last say I have found a reliable trustworthy mechanic to work on my car. I am no longer in fear taking my car to get repaired and worried about someone price gouging my wallet. Thank you Andrew. read more
