I've never experienced such bad service at a restaurant. This was my first time at Steven's and my mother and I came on Valentine's Day. I came with expectations that the restaurant would be busy this evening and was prepared to wait for our food, however having to wait 20 minutes after being seated for water was not expected. And neither was waiting almost an hour into our reservation for our appetizers to come out. By the time our main courses arrived we were not even hungry anymore. Our food, appetizers and main dishes, tasted alright but nothing to recommend. Our server only stopped by our table to serve our food, never to check on us to see if we needed anything. At the the end of the evening he explained that they were busy, yet I feel that should not have stopped him or any other server from quickly checking in on us. The server for the table next to ours walked past us plenty of times and chose not to check on us either. Multiple servers and bussers on the floor, yet no one could give us an explanation as to why every other table had food on it, even the ones who arrived after us, and ours only had bread and water after 40 minutes? Wait staff professional & friendly. Drink orders took forever to arrive but that's the bartenders fault. On New Years Eve there should be extra bartenders. We ordered NY Strips. Husbands was perfect. Mine was incredibly tough. At $42 each I expected much better. I took most of it home as I couldn't deal with it. Stevens sent me a thank you for dining with them & asked for input & also inquired if I'd like a response. I replied yes. I never heard from them. We will not be going back. A little tip for the owners. This is not a 5 star restaurant. It's in a strip mall. Maybe provide a choice of soup or salad with your over priced dinners. Great from the very start. The Avocado Crab Tower appetizer tasted as good as it looks. Bleu Cheese Burger cooked perfectly, "Leslie's Salmon" with mango salsa awesome, Chicken Salad with great tasting real Raspberry Vinaigrette tasted great. Chicken a bit dry but flavor of Vinaigrette and vegetables made up for it. You can spend $15 or $45 in this place up to you. Chocolate six layer dessert and cheesecake light and fluffy. This place was very interesting. One of the few places in Gurnee for real fine dining. The place was very nice looking inside. Service was good overall I just did not care for much of what we ordered. The appetizers I thought in comparison to what you actually got were very overpriced by any standards. I ordered their steak special, at these prices I was expecting a steakhouse quality presentation, cooking temperature and taste. Presentation was a total 0, meat had no grill marks and even the bone was charred black. I ordered it medium it came almost well done, and taste was completely flat. I don't think they even used salt to be honest. Even the side of mushrooms and onions was tasteless and no seasoning. I have eaten at many many fine restaurants, the price point is not what bothered me here, it was what you got for what you paid that was the irritating part. Even with their rising cost and labor cost rising I get it, but If your going to charge prices of a fine dining restaurant like in the bigger suburbs or in the city, you better deliver high quality and for me they fell very short from it to say the least. The appetizers were just ok; the sliders tasted and smelled burnt. The lobster Mac and cheese was very bland. The mushroom quesadilla had very little taste but the guacamole served with it was very good. The fried calamari was good and came with an extra spicy sauce that I liked. I wasn't sure if there was any tuna in the tartar, it was mostly tomato topping. My main dish was the special lobster Parpadelle. This dish was terrible, very soupy and not flavorful at all. I should have mentioned something but I was with a large work group. Also it took and extra 15 minutes for another lady at my table to get her chicken, the waiter only offered a free desert to compensate which we ended up not getting. They should have offered a free dish considering we had a big bill with 9 people at our table and gratuity included. I also tried the bolognese pasta and that was also bland. They must not know what salt or flavor is. Won't be eating here again. read more

No longer the extra special place it once was. Took my wife for her birthday, hoping to have a great experience. Service was very slow--I think our server had too many tables, including the patio. Plus, our server ran his fingers through his long-ish hair several time through the evening--not just at our table. Most of the food seemed slightly overcooked---not enough to complain to a manager, but my shrimp in the shrimp cocktail was slightly overcooked---but was not cleaned very well. The crab brie soup was very good---but the crab seemed slightly overcooked (harder than I remember). Our steaks were slightly overcooked---her rare was closer to medium, my medium was more like medium well. when it came time for desert, our server asked what flavor creme bruelee she wanted--she said vanilla, but he brought out chocolate. My cheesecake was fine. For a $200 meal, and based on past experiences, I expected better. Don't know if I'll return---especially for a special meal. My wife and I have been to Stevens' many times. It's always a pleasant experience. The interior decor it very elegant. The restaurant is pretty spacious. The wait staff has always been helpful and attentive. My favorite steak is the 20oz Bone in Ribeye. Very tender and very flavorful! I've tried a few different sides and they have all been great. It's been years since I've had anything other than a drink at the bar here. The last time I dined, about 8 years ago, I wasn't impressed, so I hadn't come back. We were celebrating an anniversary last night and didn't want to stray too far from home, so I thought we'd give them another try. I'm happy to say, they've upped their game! Three of us dined with a 7:30 reservation. When we came into the place, it was about 80% full. There are two sides to the place: a bar side with TVs and a lounge area, and a full restaurant. Our waiter came to the table and offered us some warm house bread with butter. We gobbled this up, ordered another basket and ate that too! He explained that the loaves were made specially for the restaurant and that they were a half sourdough recipe. It's delicious! We tried the appetizer special which gives you three choices from the appetizer menu for $30, which is a pretty good deal. Our choices were the bacon wrapped scallops (2), black and blue tuna, and the lamb chops (2). The lamb chops stood out with a balsamic glaze and garlic aioli. We also each had a cocktail from their specialty list. There was a tasty and potent Sazerac, a 'French' martini with chambord and pineapple juice, and the absolutely stand out seasonal Orchard cocktail made with apple cider. That was delicious, strong, and delightfully complex. My friend ordered the modest pot roast entree. This was very hearty and ample; he took half of it home in a doggie bag. I had the delicious and decadent 12 oz. bone in veal chop with a choice of side: au gratin potatoes. The sauce for the veal chop was a complex mushroom wine gravy and the potatoes had a fine quality gruyere with probably a little wine in them too. I ordered my chop medium rare and it came out more medium, but it wasn't so overcooked that it suffered too much so I just ate it. The last of us had the Ahi tuna entree with a side of lobster mac and cheese. The lobster mac was tasty, although the sauce in which it was served was a little soupy. Because we were celebrating an anniversary, we got a choice of dessert, and we chose the chocolate cake, plus I wanted some vanilla ice cream with it. This was nicely done, light, and not too sweet even with the buttercream/ganache frosting. The atmosphere is upscale Gurnee suburban. Our service got better as the night went on, but that was most certainly a function of the fewer tables in the restaurant. By the time we left at around 9PM, the place was only about 20% full. I would definitely go back. The food is quite good, and it's not really overpriced for the quality. The atmosphere is perfect for a romantic or special occasion, and service sufficed. read more

One of my favorite steak restaurants in the area. Plenty of parking in the lot and overall a great small local steakhouse. We have been here multiple times and brought friends in as well. My son loves the lamb chops here and the rest of us settle in for steaks. On our last visit, seems they have changed the menu up a bit and it's unclear that sides are still included with dinner entrees. The lamb chops were also presented differently than on previous occasion: laid out flat on a plate, instead of "posed" with bones intertwined. Not a big deal, but the previous presentation was more appealing. When our steaks arrived, the server asked us to cut into the steaks to confirm proper temps. All seemed fine, although my strip was a tad overcooked, not enough to send back, but about 2 minutes long on the grill past the medium temp. On a recent visit we were celebrating my birthday, which was acknowledged in the reservation. We ordered desert, but seems the restaurant or the server forgot or maybe just don't acknowledge b-day celebrations, as there was no candle in the desert we ordered, not to mention not even a small cupcake or whatever to acknowledge the celebration. Overall I prefer this local establishment over the competing national chains and will be coming back! read more

I had the 22 ounce Bone In Ribeye with a side of the Peppercorn sauce......mouth watering! Needless to say I devoured this and threw in a side of asparagus for good measure. For appetizers we ordered Coconut Shrimp, Buffalo Cauliflower and Lobster Mac'n'cheese. All good, especially the Coconut Shrimp. Great service, ask for Dan's section! The interior is nice especially the wine cellar room. They have pretty reasonable prices for such high quality food. $40 for a 22 oz Bone-In Ribeye is a steal! Plenty of parking in the lot, only negative is that it's in a plaza instead of a stand alone place. Kind of uninspiring going to a plaza. We had heard wonderful things about this restaurant and were looking forward to a celebratory evening. We had a reservation so we were seated within 5 minutes even though the restaurant was busy. We were hungry and looking forward to a nice dinner. The server, Terri, took our drink order. We also ordered an appetizer. After she served our wine, we waited quite some time for the appetizer. When we inquired about it, she claimed she never heard us ask. So we asked her to put that order in as we were hungry. It came shortly thereafter and we waited for our dinner. We had been sitting in the restaurant over 1 1/2 hours and we still had NOT been served our dinner. By that time we were upset and full from eating bread out of hunger. Terri had just told us it was coming. I finally approached the Manager Brian and told him how upset we were. We almost walked out! But FINALLY the dinner arrived. Terri had gotten my husband's side dish wrong. My daughter was so aggravated that she barely ate. I barely touched my meal as well. We asked that they bag up our food. Because we were celebrating, they wanted to give us a dessert which was appreciated. Brian graciously took our drinks off the bill as well which was appreciated. But after the whole experience, we would not recommend this place if you are looking for a quality steak night out. My daughter and husband said their steaks were not as good as other places. PRE-COASTER SNACK I wasn't totally impressed here. We rolled in right as the restaurant opened. We weren't the only ones because there were others waiting in the parking lot. We were seated immediately and placed our order. Since we were having a light snack we went with bowls of soup and a buffalo calamari. The sad part is that the warm bread on the table was the best item we had and it was free. The buffalo calamari was not very good. The best part was the Frank's Buffalo Sauce on there. The cook did not prepare it properly because it was chewy. I need to learn to stop trying calamari outside of Chicago because its a letdown. If I was you then I would pass on this menu item. I also have to comment on the bus boys. Who trained them? A micro manager? I'm serious when I say this. They were practically following each other. One walked up and tried to take my plate. He had his hand on my plate and said "Are you done with this?" I said, "No!" The second bus boy was standing right behind him. Went to grab the same plate and asked "Are you done with this?" "NO!" Came out of my mouth again. Is this a joke they play on guests? Or does the manager have then so wound up about clearing tables. I'm not sure but I do hate a messy table but I hate busboys taking my plates when I'm still using them even more. Plus you touched my plate before I even said it was okay. There has to be some health violations there because all you do is touch dirty dishes all night. It felt like the bus boys were rushing us out the door by taking our dishes and then we couldn't find our waiter to even get our check. I think they wanted to turn our table but it wasn't handled smoothly. It was not a good feeling. Us not coming back here won't hurt them because they seem to have a lot of regulars but maybe Steven's should treat all their tables with the same respect and courtesy and not just the regulars. We stopped by here just on a whim, 3 of us wanted to get some good food, and had heard good things about Stevens'. They exceeded expectation, the beef wellington was amazingly well prepared, moist and juicy, and just a perfectly golden pastry crust on the outside, baked to perfection. The sides were equally as tasty. On top of that, the server was outstanding, we were disappointed to hear it was his last day, but he assured us the other staff was equally as good,, and it did seem so from what we noticed at other tables. I treated my bride this past weekend to the special Valentine's Day evening at Stevens' (they usually are closed on Sunday). My first impression was that the last time I was here that it was definitely an upmarket crowd. This most recent visit had a much more downmarket, casual and family oriented crowd than before. It seems to me that like there are fewer and fewer places that a couple can go out for a romantic "special" dinner these days. Our service was very good to excellent, food better than average. The only thing that I was disappointed in was my lobster macaroni and cheese had a very watery sauce with an odd texture- I would have enjoyed it more if it had been a thicker and creamier sauce with a more distinct cheddar flavor. Otherwise we had a nice and relaxing evening even if it wasn't as romantic as we had hoped when we made our reservations. read more

Had lunch here on the way to Wisconsin yesterday. Note it was the day before Thanksgiving. My wife and I were seated promptly in a booth in the dining room. Free potato chips were provided immediately; we could not discern any parmesan cheese on them. Took a while before the waiter came to our table. The lady had the brie/crab soup and salmon salad. I went with chicken/vegetable soup and beef stew/pot roast.. We felt that both soups were average; certainly not anything exciting. Chicken soup had a few cubes of white meat, carrots, celery and onions in a broth. We rated the entrees 3.5 of 5. Asked the waiter for dinner rolls; he replied that they were out due to an ordering error. I asked what they make sandwiches with, and the light bulb went on; he provided sliced bread which went well with the stew. A soft drink was drastically overpriced ($4??). One negative comment/observation: I am heavy and my wife is a svelte 130 pounds. We both agreed that the booth seats were uncomfortable, as if they have been there too long. They should be replaced. I'd guess that dinners here are better than lunch, based on other reviews. read more

It's embarrassing to admit how long we skipped over Stevens', despite it being basically in our backyard. We finally went this summer when we were celebrating my husband's birthday and wanted to try something new. And I'm glad that finally did. We apparently stumbled in shortly after a renovation so, though we can't compare it to the previous ambiance and decor, I can say that it's beautiful now. The lighting is warm, the decor is comfortable, and everything about the ambiance said, "Stay awhile." We were glad to. I started with the crab and brie soup after reading about it endlessly online, and it didn't disappoint. It was rich, creamy, and a nice balance of flavors. For dinner, I had the medallion trio, which comes with your choice of sauces of crusts. I picked blue cheese, horseradish, and garlic. All were good, though I have to say the blue cheese was easily my favorite. My husband and I were pleased by the wine list and took advantage of the opportunity to have a bottle from a winery we enjoyed immensely on a recent trip to the Pacific Northwest. Service was beyond impeccable. Our waiter was kind and funny without being intrusive or annoying. He was helpful in navigating the menu and giving us tips about the most popular dishes. We've been back a couple of times since that first visit and have always been pleased with our experience. Glad we finally pushed ourselves to try this spot! read more

My boyfriend and I have been to Steven's a few times and I've tried almost all of their appetizers... all of them are phenomenal! They also have good selection of beer and wine and the owners and bartenders are attentive and friendly. Their free warm bread and home made chips are amazing as well! They have live music every Friday night and so far, the music has been nice. The atmosphere is from formal to casual, since it is a steak house but even if you choose to sit at the bar, people are still enjoying a nice meal and drinks. read more

Ordered the dry aged 20oz T-bone steak. I must say that it was one really tasty, delicious steak. Had it cooked medium with a slight pink in the center. No sauce needed for this steak, the natural juices was enough to have a satisfying taste. I would highly recommend getting this steak. read more
