Steve's cafe is the quintessential diner of yesteryear. It has a nice ambiance, quick service, and a welcoming vibe. I had the pork verde breakfast burrito. It was very tasty & filling. It was a quiet Tuesday morning, and the kitchen provided quick service. Dawn (the server ) was friendly but not intrusive. This normally packed, so very happy to get in quickly. My favorite breakfast (& lunch) place when i visit Helena.

Let's start with the Good! When I walked in I was immediately greeted and offered to sit at the bar or a table. The host was really nice and the place was packed for a Wednesday. After being seated at the bar I looked over the HUGE menu and decided on the Sausage Sampler with hash browns ( So I thought) two over medium eggs and fruit salad. The sausage was okay but the hash browns were not brown at all!! Which confused me as it is literally the name of the food. I didn't even bother trying them Because they weren't cooked. The eggs were nothing to write home about either. When the hash whites came out of the kitchen I was surprised that a cook thought this was a good idea. Either way, the breakfast is mediocre at best. Ambiance was a diner that was about it.

While vacationing in Helena, I looked to Yelp for a breakfast recommendation and Steve's popped up with lots of praise. Once again Yelp was right on target. This place is top notch with a loyal following. There were 6 of us in our group and everyone had something different. I had a breakfast burrito that was both delicious and big. The huckleberry pancakes were described as fantastic. Even with 6 of us the service was excellent and the food all came out together and hot. I wish we lived closer but highly recommend this place if you are in Helena!

Really good breakfast food here with Gluten free options! Large portions great food great service very fast! Clean place nice clean and well stocked restrooms here. Gluten free pancakes were giant! And tasty. Try the huckleberry anything here. The Irish eggs Benedict are their specialty and they don't disappoint. There was a large selection of gluten free items here which was great because my daughter has celiac and wasn't limited to just one menu item. Our server Sean was very friendly and attentive. This place was jam packed, but they served us quickly and efficiently. The restrooms are something nice to mention. They have two single restrooms that they keep very clean and well stocked. They even have tissue boxes in there. Very impressive.

What an amazing find for breakfast!! We had the hash breakfast and the sausage sampler breakfast and shared. Delicious! Atmosphere is homey and inviting. Dawn, our server, was very friendly and helpful. She suggested her favorites which have now become our favorites next time we're in town. The only slight negative is that the coffee was a little weak for our tastes - but we like strong coffee! Try Steve's, you won't be disappointed- and you'll leave full and satisfied.

Went to Steve's Cafe while on vacation in Helena. It's a really great place for breakfast or lunch. When there I ordered the 3 Meat Scramble with Hashbrowns and Pancakes as my two side items. I also ordered an extra side order of 3 sausage links. Really enjoyed dining at this place. It was quaint, cozy and had great food. The waitress was also super friendly and a pleasure to be waited on. Everything you want from a cafe/diner. I highly recommend.

My burger. 1/3 lb. The bacon had been sticking out all around but I folded them all in to keep them in the burger.

I took my family to Steves cafe for the first time today. We had heard good things and it was nearly two o'clock in the afternoon and they close at 2:30 so I called them and asked them if we could come in and if we did if we wouldn't be rushed out at 2:30. They assured us that we could finish our lunch so we went in to have a meal. I got a bbq bacon cheeseburger, ($13.75) and my wife got a taco salad, (can't remember the price). My burger was decent, it had VERY GOOD THICK bacon, but it wasn't anything super special. I got a salad with my burger and it was just basic iceberg/carrot/red cabbage mix. That's the lettuce mix that was in my wife's taco salad too. And then we paid over $9 for a kids burger meal. The French fries were good and hot, but again, it wasn't anything outlandishly special, and the prices were extremely high. The only other things we got were two buttermilk pancakes for $4.50, and two coffees and two chocolate milks. Overall it wasn't a huge meal, but with tip it was $60, so I found that quite expensive. Nadine, our server, was very sweet and kind, and everyone there was nice though. Not quite as good of a value as I'd hoped, but worth checking out.

I have eaten all over the country and Steve's café by far is the best breakfast place possibly in the United States, food is excellent and the service is outstanding. You won't find a better place to have breakfast. read more

Steve's is as good as a diner experience gets. The only downside is that other people know it. Unless you get there early on weekends, be prepared to wait. When you finally get your seat, coffee is there (and is above average diner coffee). We normally go for any of the specials (the pumpkin stuffed french toast stands out) or our favorite, the corned beef hash. The hash browns stand up to the No Sweat's hash browns, and the serving sizes are on the very large side. We normally go to Steve's after a late-night celebration, and don't plan to each lunch afterwards because it's difficult to stop eating once it's in front of you. Be aware, if you order a meat side (e.g. bacon, sausage), it will come in a larger than normal portion (at least in our experience). I think people stay there so long because it takes so long to get thru all the food. It's not "fine" dining, but it is as good as it gets for a diner in the middle of strip malls in the Helena valley. It compares very favorably with diners anywhere in the country (and we've sampled quite a few), and in general, the food quality is far superior. To go even further, I don't think you can get this kind of experience outside the US or Canada, and Steve's is a paragon of the "kozy kountry kitchen" archetype of American food. Prices are very reasonable for the quality/quantity of food that is served (we've never left there without a substantial quantity of leftovers that never make it to the next day), and we've found the waitstaff to be very courteous and helpful, even when they're on their 5th hour of being slammed by hungry brunchers. I'm so happy this restaurant is here in Helena. read more

I've never had a bad meal here! Just be prepared to wait and make sure your entire party is present. They won't seat you until your whole party is there on busy days (like Sunday morning brunch!). read more

Can I give it 6 Stars? Steve's Cafe has great food and wonderful people in a charming atmosphere. What more can you ask for? I ate there on consecutive days last week as I dropped my daughter off at college. The stuffed French toast was out of this world. Deliciousness oozed out of every crevice. The Marion Berry Pancakes with Marion Berry Syrup hit the spot perfectly. Fluffy and delicious just the way a pancake is supposed to be. My daughter loved her waffles when I took her there on Saturday. I won't be in Helena often, but when I am I will make it to Steve's Café. I did buy a gift card that I will send to my daughter so she can go there with some classmates and enjoy herself. read more

Breakfast on a weekday morning, food was fine but service was not great at all. Maybe it was that we were there with a kid and a baby? Felt like we were getting dirty looks for being there. Unfortunate because people rave about Steve's but I was really unimpressed. read more

Admittedly, I've only been to Steve's once, so I can't speak for their consistency. On the other hand, the one time I went was with a largish party for breakfast on a weekday, when one would expect the waitress who served us to not really be expecting to deal with a large group whose members didn't all show up at the same time. She still gave us great service, and was friendly throughout. I had the breakfast burrito with hashbrowns. The burrito was very tasty and I would eat another quite happily, but what really impressed me where the hashbrowns. I always order hashbrowns the first time I go to a new breakfast place, knowing there's about a 90% chance they'll be a sad, soggy, greasy pile of mushy potato, but hoping nonetheless that this time I'll hit that 10% chance of something good. The hashbrowns at Steves are the best I can remember having: enough uncrisped potato in the middle to give them substance and moisture, with a crunchy, texture-perfect top and bottom. read more

Went there for breakfast had a taco omelette with pancakes. Omelette was ok. But pancakes never came. Was greasy hash browns. Asked for ketchup for one on table was empty. Never got it. Waiter asked if I needed anything but left before I was able to say anything. Went to pickup when done. Thank goodness for tums in there read more

Visited on beautiful Sunday morning and the restaurant was very busy; not surprising given they were recently voted Best Breakfast in Helena. However, if this is the best breakfast, Helena has a lot of room for improvement. We were seated pretty quickly--awesome. Then we were served coffee right away--but the coffee was burnt. Our food came fast and it was fine, except my omelet came with avocado. Avocado that I was so unripe, I could pick up a slice and fold it in half without breaking it and it would snap back into flat position. Obviously not edible. Really glad I didn't pay $2.75 to have avocado ADDED to something as the menu suggests you can do. The rest of my meal was pretty good and so was my husband's. Service: efficient but not very warm or friendly. We got our check soon after we were done eating, which is great because I hate waiting forever at the end of the meal for the bill. We will probably eat here again wit h lower expectations and maybe stick to the more signature menu items, skip the coffee. read more

I travel constantly and eat at restaurants a lot. I get tiredm of the same old fare. This has the standards and I'm sure they are great but I had one homemade Chorizo sausage and one huckleberry pancake and eggs. Wunderbar! Large portions, reasonable price, adequate service and findable. I would have ordered the French toast as opposed to the pancake. The pancake was adequate itself, but sublime because of the huckleberries and huckleberry syrup. It was just a vehicle for the syrup and fruit. Don't go here for the ambience, or the service go here for the food. It's killer! A true find! read more

I think this is the best breakfast place in town. With most meals you get two sides to choose from. I got hashbrowns and pancakes. It is more food then I ever could think about finishing. I ordered the Mexican sausage. It is the perfect amount of spicy. For less then $10, I feel like I got two meals. read more

Voted best breakfast place in Helena. The food is awesome!! My husband and I always get the chicken fried steak with eggs, hash browns, and pancakes. So good! I have also tried the stuffed French toast and the huckleberry lemonade, both very good! I would suggest that everyone try Steve's while they are in town. The food was good. The issue I had was the kitchen staff eating and drinking while prepping food and not much in the way of hand washing going on. We were seated with an open view of the kitchen. Service was good and I like they are local. read more

I got the pulled pork sandwich, the pork was hard and chunky and tasted a little "off." Asked for crispy fries but they weren't, in fact some were like raw potato. My wife ordered a vegetarian omelet. The egg was good and had nice supply of veggies with a somewhat unripe avocado. The side of pancake was ok, fluffy with a taste of vanilla but not as good as my home cooked just add water ones. Staff very friendly. I'd give it another try. read more

Had a chicken sandwich with fries. 100% microwaved. No grilled at all. Lousy fries. Terrible coffee. All for 13 $. Bad joke. I was sick to my stomach 3 hours later. THis place doesnt know real food. And asking someone from Helena to understand what that is ..a waste of time. read more

The food is good, the servings are big and the price is right. What the heck else do you want? Folks who don't like Steve's should stick to IHOP. We have been numerous times and usually with large groups. Everyone always enjoys the food. Ask for the specials, but everything on the menu is special. I love the homemade corn beef hash; the french toast and or pancakes are really good, but they give you too much; you may want to share.The bacon is good and cooked crisp; but, I love their Italian sausage; get it with eggs for breakfast, or with onions and peppers on a sub roll for lunch. I am going to try the meatball sandwich the next time I am there. Not a fancy place and on the weekend you will have to wait a while for breakfast... but,, if you don't want to wait, there are plenty of mediocre places in Helena for breakfast; this is not one of them. read more

My favorite!! Always amazing and the wait staff is excellent. I love going to Steve's-breakfast out is such a treat. I have friends who need gluten free food and I can't believe how big their gluten free menu is. People usually only have a few things to choose from. Just a great Helena institution! That was amazing! This place has small town charm. It is very clean, even the bathrooms. The waitress was very quick and helpful even with a full house. I had the corn beef hash and it was yummy! Shredded corn beef not the canned kind. Pancakes were great as well. Next time I'm trying the stuffed huckleberry French toast. read more

The chicken was fried perfectly on the outside and the inside was tender and had good flavor. The fries here were very good and I would've kept ordering more of those if I had any more room. The food here is really great. It feels like the best diner food imaginable in a setting that offers so much more. The restaurant reminded me of a bigger chain but with the hometown feel. Big but cozy and personable. Our server was great and always made sure our drinks were full the whole meal. I'll be sure to come back here the next time we visit Helena.

The beer that Steve and I had was the Prickly Pear which is a fruited Pale Ale. In the flavor you will certainly pick up lots of hoppiness but there is a hint of pear with some sweetness. So, I took my drink and asked to be seated at a table. the table next to me had about 8 people seated after me, and again they were able to order drinks before my waitress came to me. So, looks matter in this restaurant - a lot! That is never a good sign. My waitress is probably in the wrong career as she was brusque and seemed put off at having to serve 1 person. Maybe she was cursed with being German as I am. The wedge salad I ordered was two small wedge pieces instead of the normal 1 large piece and was ok, but underwhelming in both the size and the amount of blue cheese which was a bit sparse. The 6 oz fillet seemed more like 4 and was ok - the baked potato noticeably smaller than most but loaded at least. The restaurant scene is Helena is pitiful, to be honest. Billings is the place in Montana to be for restaurants. Maybe Bozeman or Missoula but unfortunately, the capital is lacking. The martinis were decent but not as good as the windmill in billings.

My family of 5 loves going to Steve's Cafe. The food is excellent, with large portions, and affordable. I've had several of their daily breakfast specials, and left feeling stuffed with happy taste buds. Prepare to wait if you have kids or are a group of 5+. We have waited over 45 minutes for a table. We have had a few issues with the hostess when it came to seating, and I hope with their second location some of these issues can be resolved. We once brought our out of town family with us to Steve's. The staff wanted to seat us in two separate locations in the restaurant. read more

Wandered over to Helena today. Always great to visit the states capital. While there I was able to visit Steve's Cafe. It's a small restaurant that is definitely a favorite of the locals. While I was sitting there I was able to watch the interactions of the staff and their regulars. I had their Chicken and Apple sausage, made in house, which comes with 2 eggs and a variety of sides to choose from. I chose the hash browns and "small" pancakes. Everything was sooo good. My experience at Steve's Café this morning was very poor. There is no sign that says wait to be seated so sitting down in a seat, gives the staff the ability to be rude and condensing. When it's brought to the attention of the owner of the place you get his wrath and rudeness, which is exactly why I will no longer return to Steve's Café. Being on oxygen and a disabled person, I realize this doesn't mean much to him, but a little bit of dignity and a little bit of respect is all I asked for. read more

There was an insect in my food. When i tried to bring it to the server's attention i was given nasty attitude. I then asked to speak with the owner, this arrogant man with the temperament of a teenager came out and spoke to me in a very disrespectful manner, as well as made inappropriate and highly offensive comments in regards to my religion.
