I've been to a lot of the Breka locations across the city and stopped at this one once over the summer. This review is for this specific location, but I will say that I really appreciate the Breka brand in general for the wide selection of interesting and affordable but delicious baked goods, light meals, and beverages. And, of course, the 24/7 thing. I got a pistachio donut and iced London fog here. I love their stuffed donuts - they fill them with a lot of rich cream and biting into one is like biting into a fluffy cloud. They are sweet and kind of over the top, and I usually am not into super sweet donuts, but it just works here and is totally worth the indulgence. The pistachio flavour in this one was very nice. They made a good iced London fog too. They use a teabag for the London fog instead of a concentrate, and while some places that make it this way fail at the iced version because they don't steep the tea long enough, they did a good job with it. It was strong enough and just the right amount of sweet. Small complaint: they only have plastic cups for iced drinks even if you're dining in. The shop is pretty small. I visited in the early morning and did manage to find a seat, but it was crowded, and it looks busy every time I pass by. Even so, the atmosphere was nice with the light coming in the windows in the front of the shop, and the staff was calm and friendly. And jalapeño mixed cheese made good combination. I was disappointed with chicken quality. They don't use real, natural chicken. Wow this place has tons of options!! It was packed on a Saturday morning, but the line gave me time to pick what I wanted. I settled on the matcha cream puff, which was HUGE. I was so happy with my decision as it was light, fluffy, and had a great matcha taste. I didn't get to try anything else, so I will have to come back again. read more

This is a very solid bakery. It's often bustling, especially in the morning, but it's a great place to grab a quick bite. The ambiance inside is very comfortable. I recently had a birthday party for my dad and my daughter. One is vegan and one isn't. Since we were celebrating the two together, I struggled to figure out what to do about a cake! So when I called Breka, the staff member suggested I get a few slices of the chocolate ganache vegan cake and a few of the tuxedo cake. Worked out great! Went on a Friday night for some dessert and it was pretty crowded! We were lucky enough to find a table for 3 but after us, there were no empty seats. This place is good if you want to quickly stop by to pick up something but might not be the best place for a sit-down experience unless you go during work hours. The service was amazing as always! They had lots of staff who were very organized and quick with the orders. I usually get the vegan chocolate cookie from here but they ran out (no surprise), so I decided to try the Earl Grey shortbread. It was delicious! I think I found my second fav dessert! Their sweet bacon panini is so good warmed! I was hesitant because it was the most expensive sandwich there, but wow. They use their own cheddar jalapeno bread, and they saute an onion jam which is sweet and slightly spicy. Chicken pot pie was fluffy and had good amount of ingredients inside. The top was crispy! Copenhagen was okay, a little tough. Not quite flaky like a croissant and not quite fluffy like a cinnamon bun. I like the almond paste though. Food is decent and reasonably priced at the one on east Hastings. Have not tried any of their drinks as there is generally no place to sit because of all the pathetic singles taking every table long after they finish, hovering over their laptops. Can't they afford internet at home? Brekka should have a please consider others and leave when finished policy or have larger share tables instead of the dumb tiny ones. Come first thing in the morning and your mouth will be drooling! All the shelves are fully stocked with freshly made pastries & sandwiches galore. Loved the CHICKEN SALAD SANDWICH (on Rosemary Cheddar Sourdough). I also tried their STEAK & CHEESE PANINI, and SWEET BACON & CHICKEN PANINI (on Jalapeño Cheddar Sourdough). The apple fritter was doughy but had nice apple chunks in it. Wished I had room to try their matcha cream puff and turkey provolone sandwich! Honestly, this place is such a Vancouver classic! It's hands down one of the best spots for a late-night sweet treat, especially since they're open 24 hours. I know a lot of people also like to study here because of the long hours, so that's definitely a bonus. I highly recommend trying their Bienenstich cake which is a german dessert made from sweet yeast dough with a baked-on topping of caramelized almonds and filled with vanilla custard, buttercream, or cream. How awesome to find a bakery and cafe that opens 24/7 in Vancouver so this place gets my 4 stars just for being able to satisfy that late night cravings and for offering early morning breakfast. Ambiance was kinda loud in the afternoon as it was bustling with customers coming and going, plus there's construction around Fraser and 49th which adds to noise factor. Seating is limited for dining in but service is fairly quick - thus, Breka makes my list as a good choice for takeout items and coffee to go. So what did I order? I ordered a chai latte and pistachio cream filled donut though both were too sweet for me... Ive been to Breka many times, but always the one on Davie. Today I went to the Fraser one for the first time. Experience was less than impressive, by a long-shot, and it had everything to do with one staff member. it was an infuriating encounter. Maybe she was new, undertrained, or just didnt care. Either way, an employee like that makes a successful company like Breka look terrible. I called in first, looking for a loaf of Caraway Rye. The lady who answered said they had one left, and would set it aside for me if I came in right away, which I did. I come to the store, get in line, and another lady at the counter helps me. I said I have a loaf of bread on hold, heres my phone number. She went to their pile of products set aside for customers, took my loaf, set it aside, and brought me someone else's bread. clearly the sign on it had someone elses name and number on it. I corrected her, then she brought it back to the pile, got the correct one. great. She misheard my number I suppose. Then she asked if I paid for it yet. I said no, im here to pay for it now. then she responds "ok but it says here you did not pay for it yet." for God's sake, LISTEN. When I corrected her again, she said "oh ok, you can pay over there." Great. Then i ask her, just to be sure, "can you tell me what bread this is?" to make sure its the correct one i wanted. She says "i dont know, Im not the one who packed it." ...... ok, well then please find out. your store made this bread. "I cant, i didnt pack it." ok, please go ask the one who did. (omg). Then she asks someone else in the store, who tells her and she comes to me saying "this is Fara bread." excuse me? I wanted Caraway bread. then she goes to the sign on the shelf, looks at it (it says Caraway Rye), and turns back to me and says "yeah, Fara bread." I said "no, i saw the sign you were holding, it says caraway." then she looks at the sign again, "oh sorry, Cara bread." ok thank you. And i went to pay for it. This is an example of an employee who does not give the slightest ounce of care to her work, does not even TRY to make an effort, and is someone i would NEVER hire in my own business. As for the bread, its fine, pretty good. I never went to Breka because I thought they were best in the city. But their stuff is all around solid 4/5 consistently, reliable, huge selection, and open 24/7 which is awesome. Parking at this location is street meter parking. Its pretty busy on a Sunday afternoon. Store itself is clean although there was a fly buzzing around in the donut cabinet, sadly. I wouldnt go back to this location. read more

All my birthday cakes are purchased at Breka on Fraser Street because they are fresh and delicious. Last week I was looking for a non dairy cake for my mother's very special birthday, I knew that Breka did not make customized cakes I was told so I started calling numerous bakeries even the most well known bakeries were unable to make me a non dairy cake. Very strange I find? How difficult can it be. By chance I called Breka again and explained my problem and I very understanding worker explained to me that the Ultimate Chocolate Ganache cake is Vegan, therefore it is ideal for a lactose intolerant person. In fact my mother absolutely loved her cake. My point is, why aren't more bakeries in Vancouver skilled in making non lactose cakes? read more

We came around 3 pm and there was no line, but all of the tables were full. There's only 4 small tables plus some bar seating along the wall, so it's not a lot. I grabbed a mango coconut mousse ($6.25), and my friend got an Italian pocket ($6.50) plus a coffee. We got our food quickly, but they forgot about my friend's coffee order. We stood around for 10 minutes, and it was only when we saw people who ordered a lot later than my friend get their coffee that we checked in with the barista. Stopped by here for breakfast. This location in particular is very small with a couple of tables and gets packed easily and loud so it's hard to hear. Service is fast to take the order but getting the order is a little slow. We ordered the Reuben sandwich warmed, chicken apricot sandwich warmed, early grey puff and strawberry shortcake. Both sandwiches are pretty good and decent amount of meat. The earl grey puff was all cream no puff. Couldn't finish it because of all the cream. My kid liked the strawberry shortcake. Received a cheesecake slice and matcha cream puff as a birthday treat from a good friend and both were quite tasty! The cheesecake itself was smooth and not too sweet but I wasnt the biggest fan of the gluten free crust as I prefer the classic graham cracker crust. The matcha cream puff was STUFFED FULL with cream that was not too heavy, had a decent matcha flavour and again, was not too sweet. I wish there was actually a little less cream and more choux to balance it out a bit. Overall, a nice place to find desserts and savoury favourites of all kind! read more

First time at a Breka location not solely for breakfast take out! I've been before and loved their muffins, but this time I decided to try out their donuts and eclairs. We shared a chocolate éclair ($5), london fog donut ($2.50), and Pistachio filled donut ($3.25). My favourite pick is the pistachio -- super strong and sweet taste from the glaze and pudding on the inside. Donut itself was quite fluffy and filled me up super quickly. The london fog was more of a "safe" pick - you know that it would taste good if you liked earl grey things. The glaze had a solid earl grey taste on top off an already quite-sweet and dense donut. I would compare the éclair to a chocolate dipped ice cream bar. The outer chocolate shell was hard and was filled with cream inside. With so many donuts, I should have ordered a coffee to cancel our the taste. However, we opted for a chai latte (as this was well into the night) and it was one of the strongest chai-tasting lattes I've ever had. If you like chai, I would DEFNITELY try this! This did add to the sweetness of everything else we were eating though -- not sure if they also added sugar into the latte. Great place to get pastries and a coffee! It was consistently busy with an influx of people going in and out and after eating in, I see why they are so popular. read more

A 24/7 bakery place that will take care of the late night sweet tooth cravings is absolutely wonderful. Living in Richmond once it hits 9 pm you are so limited in late night sweets it's absolutely ridiculous. Not going to lie the selection of late night cuisine has changed so much over the last 15-20 years is mind blowing. Breka bakery cakes are the best their cake slices are around $6.25, the kahlua chocolate mousse (gluten free) cake slice's chocolate is super rich and dark. I really enjoy the creamy mousse, when it's chilled it almost like ice cream and then at the bottom there's a crumbly cakey like a brownie, every bite is rich and satisfying My second favourite cake is the tiramisu one before I tried the kahlua chocolate mousse one I would usually go for tiramisu. The strawberry shortcake is very fluffy, light, and airy. I liked the cream inside the cake, reminds me of Asian bakery fruit cakes. Although I didn't like the cream cheese icing they had at the top. The hazelnut chocolate filled donut was powdery and sugary, I heat it up a bit and it's so much hazelnut sauce inside. Breka has huge donuts. My most favourite donut is their eclair one. The only knock is that space is at a premium in the evening, late night or morning even. But if you wait you'll likely get a spot eventually where you can enjoy their beverages and desserts. I've been going to the one on Fraser for nearly twenty years now and the desserts have markedly improved not just in taste but presentation. And there's plenty of staff that you're never waiting long to be waited on. read more

This one is the Breka that I will be hanging out at with my friends from time to time for bakery goods or just hanging out and sitting because it is bigger and there are more open space. There seems to be more bakery items at this one than the other ones and the layout of their bakery items seem to make sense. Anyways, I love a good Breka they never seem to disappoint me in any way. On top of that, they have a VERY well trained coffee team that is extremely efficient. I know for sure I don't need to wait longer than 5 minutes for a cup of coffee sometimes. I love Breka in general because they have FANTASTIC quality of bakery items, food and drinks that is consistent between all the cafes and on top of that they are forever 24/7 open~!! It is so hard to really ding Breka for their food and drinks when they are forever 24/7 and on top of that, everything is so consistent between ALL of the stores. Our lunch was delicious and the portion size was enough for my daughter and I to share. My daughter is lactose intolerant and we were impressed that this bakery doesn't charge extra for milk alternatives like other places! We love the huge selection of cakes, pies and donuts here. This review is for take home experience... Located on the busy section of Fraser St. in Vancouver Eastside, this is one of the older locations of this chain of 24/7 bakery & cafes. Food quality is up there with the rest of the locations as their standard and consistency is well known. Staffs are friendly and efficient and if you do see a line-up it is normal, have a bit of patience and you will be served next very very soon! My personal favourite is their Strawberry Short Cake, light as air but still very creamy, other must haves are donuts!! Cinnamon Sugar & Cruller are the ones I usually get and with a nice pot of tea or coffee, one is all set for the evening with a good selection of movies on the telly!! read more

Wished it was a bit more moist with a stronger banana taste. Overall it can make a few slices to eat the next day! Cookies and cream donut: this will be every kids favourite, it was sweet but a fun presentation of Oreos splattered on top. Sweet and has a chocolate/caramel filling Passion fruit mango donut: this was ok, has a light sourness but felt the donut was dry and boring to eat Passion fruit pistachio mousse: the mousse texture was good, but the passion fruit was too sour for me. I couldn't taste much of the pistachio. Overall this was my least favourite. It just didn't really match together? Strawberry shortcake: YES, who doesn't like the basic strawberry shortcake. Stopped in for lunch and had a delicious sandwich in this busy bakery. Expect to stand in line. I was there for over an hour and the line never got better. There are a few tables inside and a couple more outside which were packed for the whole time I was there. I managed to get a seat by asking a person at the window bar to move their bags. I'm taking a star off for two reasons. First, I noticed that when people brought their own cups: staff made the drinks in disposable plastic cups; transferred the drinks and then threw the plastic cups away. Someone obviously has not gotten the message that they are meant to be reducing single use plastic, by this initiative. Second, their giant pastries look good but they are too big to be baked through. At least the one I tried had that fault, and it is a common problem with extra large pastries that I've noticed. The rye bread I bought was very good. The biroche was tasty but lacked strength. I was hoping to use it for french toast, but it wouldn't hold up. I'll be back for more rye though. read more
