This supermarket will destroy your impression of the average supermarket. It certainly made me re/evaluate mine. It makes every other grocery store seem over priced, the food tasteless and stale, and a drag to go to. My boyfriend and I live in NYC, and every now and then we drive upstate to the one in Yonkers, NY. With traffic its about an hours drive each way, and well worth the trip! We stock up on lobster rolls (3 for $15!!!!!), four berry pie (trust me you do not have to be a "pie person" to want finish off a whole one on your own), fried chicken, and a million other mouth watering pre-prepared foods that make going out into the city for an over priced meal seem like an unrewarding chore. There is always something new to try, and usually guaranteed to be delicious. The possibility of discovering a new favorite dish adds to the excitement of the experience. I am such a fan! read more

PRO: I drive to Stews a couple of times a month, because the quality of fresh fish is higher than what I can buy anywhere in Stratford. Next time I go, I plan to check out the fresh roasted coffee area too, if I can find it. Stews has superior quality and selection at competitive prices. And that's saying plenty these days. CON: The ceiling is low and dark, and the aisles are laid out in a rat-maze design. If you're not claustrophobic when you arrive, you will be after ten minutes. I force myself to overcome my natural instinct to run the hell out every time I go. It is beyond me why anyone would design a place like this. This is a store I would always take the kids to when they were younger but my husband and I went the other night and what a disappointment. Still 21/2 hours till closing but they were pulling in the rugs.There was a man outside throwing the pears into a box, throwing! The bathrooms were so dirty and I did say something and was told that would be taken care of but a half hour later still dirty. Pulled a number at the deli, # 31 just as the deli man called out # 18! Bad produce, 5 packs of rotting strawberries, I'll stop there. I called the next day to ask if it would be worth while to complain, nope. The girl said they just cater to a low end side of the public???????? meaning they don't want organic and they want their food cheap.There is nothing cheap about Stew's. This place is great! I shop here for groceries and I go to the buffet weekly. I would highly recommend this place for food and lunch if you have the chance to stop by. I like this place..just wish they had better prices. .I know it's a little more affluent area..but come on. We were in the area for something else..don't get down this way too often. .so we went in to do a quick browse of the place. Didn't really get anything but checked stuff out. Only ended up getting some small pkg of berries. .surprisingly they were priced well..but found out why...within 1 1/2 days later berries were spoiled!!! Waaaay to far to return small pkg of berries!!! Very disappointing!!!! Maybe it was an odd occurance..but either way I spent $ & wasn't able to eat more than a 1/4 of four small pkgs of berries!!! I will admit it here, in public. I was that little girl standing in front of the singing cows and milk cartons, huge smile on my face, in complete awe. Stew Leonard's was my childhood Disney World. Going back as an adult, I can also admit that the singing is a bit silly, and the cows are so much smaller than I remember (or I have grown). But, they still get me every time.. I find myself humming along to the songs about fresh vegetables and Boar's Head meat. And now that I am an adult, I get to also enjoy the free samples. Stews is a bit of a maze.. but it's fun to walk through and find all the random groceries you do not really need, but that look good, so you buy anyways. They have a huge meat selection.. with lots of variety in marinade, cuts, types, etc. Also a big produce selection, and everything is always very fresh. 100 calorie pistachio frozen yogurt is also the best for the walk back to the car. read more

I felt like shopping at Stew Leonard's was an experience. Very entertaining for kids, and for first timers! The dairy was one of the best I have ever tried. I typically drink Almond milk, but had to try their skim milk and it was to die for! They are very clever with the set up. You basically are walking in a maze so that you pass by every department. It is more of a path throughout the whole store, so be sure to get what you need before you move forward unless you know the shortcuts! If you spend over $100.00 they give you coffee or ice cream. Their fat free vanilla frozen yogurt is amazing! So fresh! They also show you the farm animals on a live feed so that you know they are being treated well. I have mixed feelings about this. I would rather not see the animals because I feel guilty about their fate! They don't have everything you need, but it is definitely worth the trip for the dairy experience, and some of the produce! read more

It's an adventure. I have yet to find another grocery store with singing puppets and Storm Trooper cupcakes. The cake department is awesome - you can bring in a photograph and have it printed on the cake, which is great for parties. Stew Leonard's is very dedicated to holidays. They have Christmas trees in December and tons of pumpkins in October. One year I attended a haunted house there, but I'm not sure if that was a one time event. This legendary carnival/dairy farm/grocery store is the original location of what is now a chain of 4 stores (it would be more, but shame on you, Orange, CT for your NIMBY attitude). If you can get past the layout (having deja vu? it's because you've been to IKEA), the animatronic singing butter sticks, and the incessant jingle - "we're farm-fresh vegetables, we're goooood fooor youuuuu!" - you're in for quite an experience. Your journey begins and ends at the ice cream counter, where soft-serve ice cream flows like a river. Pass the "one commandment" rock that states the customer is always right (although this is a notion I find terribly flawed) and inhale the delightful smells of the coffee bar and bakery. Ginger scones, anyone? Chocolate Truffle coffee? Yes, I would like a sample, thank you. Speaking of samples, you can actually eat a light meal if you hit all the sample stations. Not that I'd ever dream of doing such a thing (cough, cough). Instead of taking a number, Stew's has a touchscreen ordering system for their deli. There are two kiosks located conveniently next to the giant bin of assorted fudge. I can't even begin to imagine the bottlenecks they'd have if a standard deli counter was in place. They sell Boar's Head meats here, no need to gaze at various options in a case - these are among the best. You can watch the airport-style screen to tell you when your order is ready or just move on and pick it up. This isn't a place to come for household products, although there are a few small shelves of such items scattered around the store. You're coming here for the food (and, diagonally across the street, wines & spirits as well). Did I mention the excellent specials? There are often one or two fantastic sale items each week, such as a recent $5.99/pound special on ribeye steaks. Regular prices are competitive, too. If you don't like crowds, try to avoid visiting during the busiest times; this is a local landmark and, like IKEA, a destination store. read more

I agree that Stew's is going downhill. I bought a pie and it was covered with mold by the next day (2 days before "sell by" date. No apologies from customer service just a refund even though I had to make a trip back to the store and almost made my family sick. I do wonder about the accuracy of those "sell by"'dates? Stew Leonard's is the Disney World of grocery stores! Fun for the whole family, there's lots of singing animals, and you either love it or you hate it. I happen to be the type of person that loves it! Stew's is a big grocery store (the world's largest dairy store, as it says on the side of the building). They bottle their own milk there, which is cool, and you can watch it through glass windows within the store. The store isn't laid out like a traditional grocery store in any way! There are no "isles" per se. There is just one long winding path taking you past the bakery, dairy, coffee, veggies, fish market, cheese, etc. You pass by singing boxes of milk, cows, a banana... You name it! Kids will love it. Just don't get too distracted by all of the animatronics that you miss something you wanted to buy. It's a pain in the butt to turn around and go backwards in this place! read more

I LOVE Stew's! Love, love, love! The cheesy songs and free samples get me every time. I grew up in CT but have since moved. My mom has made this into a destination (not just passing by) whenever she is in New England. My mom tells me that when I was a baby she brought me to Stew's and Stew himself was walking around the store. She went right up to him and proudly announced that it was my first visit. Anyway, it gets better each time I visit. Now they have fresh sushi and sashimi (you can see it being rolled!) and the most amazing, freshly popped rice cakes (no styrafoam wanna-be's here). They literally, pop the rice cakes in front of your eye and they shoot out and hit this plexiglass wall. They are light & they melt in your mouth (and only 15 calories!!!) I adore the chocolate chip cookies (better than homemade!) and I promptly freeze the majority of the box right away (no preservatives... but they freeze well). Also, their cheese is so good - sometimes they are pulling fresh mozzarella - mmm... So, if you're in CT or even NY you must find a Stew Leonard's and prepare yourself for the best... read more

Pros: All products are of the highest quality. In particular, I appreciate the produce, free range meats, and cage free eggs. Country of Origin is clearly marked. "Volume Discounts"- not advertised, but generally about 10% off if you buy more than 2 of something. Cons: Oh, super crowded! The Newington one is sooo much nicer than Norwalk. People say it's expensive, but I've found staples like milk, butter, & produce to be less expensive here than at Stop & Shop. The world's largest dairy store. They're not joking. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and I think the spectacle has only gotten bigger. Flashing lights! Dancing girls! Dancing animals, anyway. Seriously, this place is incredible (and I mean that in the most literal sense of the word). Lots of animatronic displays, a farm outisde, a model train, buttons to push and cords to pull. It's like a smorgasbord of fun for kids! For food and groceries? You name it, they have it. I will say that the prices aren't the lowest, especially for staples. And you can get everything they sell in other stores. But the beauty of Stew's is that you can get everything you need together, at the same time, in the same store. The stuff I think they do well are their prepared foods, Stew's fresh dairy items (not pre-packaged name brand stuff), and their sweet stuff. Specifically, their rice pudding and their soft-serve are very good. Free samples abound, and you can usually get a staff member to open something for you if you want to try it. Parking used to be much worse, but I think has gotten better with several easily accessed entrances and exits, and more parking spots. Still, it can be a nightmare during specialty seasons when everyone needs to get their Christmas tree at the same time. Just leave plenty of time to get in and out (the store itself is a maze with carefully-crafted "cut-throughs" that you have to memorize) and you'll have a ton of fun. read more

I have a love hate relationship with this place. I love grocery stores, so I automatically love this place, but I hate the crowds. This is like grocery store on steroids. The layout of the sore isn't like a typical grocery store. There aren't really aisles...it is more of a path throughout the whole store so it makes running in and out quickly nearly impossible. As the "World Largest Dairy Store" the dairy section is quite fabulous. They also have good produce, bakery items, and meats. I don't buy normal grocery store things like pretzels and frozen dinners here, but they are great for the aforementioned fresh products. Back to the crowds. Since layout is like a path you have to follow, you and everyone else are going in the same direction. If you want to go faster you need to find a way to get around the people that seem to be going in every direction. The path then lets out to about 15 cash registers whose lines to seem to be all jumbled together. All that said I still love this place, but sometimes leaves a bit stressed. read more

I grew up with Stew Leonard's... I remember it was the only grocery store I was actually excited to go to. I mean come on... What other grocery store has free doughnut samples, anamatronic singing farm animals, REAL farm animals, machines filling cartons in front of you, a picture of an astronaut holding a stews bag on the moon, and free ice cream with purchases over 200 dollars! Also their Chocolate Milk (up until they changed it to skim from 2%) was the best chocolate milk on the planet. Now as an adult I still love the store. The selection here is extremely vast, and impressive. The quality of food is also superb. Stews is all about quality and diversity. Also I like that the store is laid out not in aisles, but just a long path. It might not make it good as a place to go for one or two items, but it makes big shops a lot easier... You get to see everything, and therefor its hard to forget anything. Given this is obviously laid out like this to try and entice you to buy more, but it also makes my shopping experience faster. This is one of my all time favorite grocery stores still to date, and I think it should be supported over other places like Whole Foods or A&P. Something is always different there every week and they take customer's feedback and reviews to heart and make a difference when they can. Customer service is definitely one of the top rated in the county. Return policy is never questioned, I've never personally taken advantage of it but some have. If I was given a choice to go on a shopping spree at Chanel/Gucci/Prada type stores or any grocery store, Id hands down pick the grocery! And Stew Leonard's is basically my version of Disneyworld or Chuck e Cheese :). From the parking lot to the front door, is where it all starts. There's fresh produce even before you walk in the doors and fresh frozen yogurt! You walk in and it's total and complete sensory overload. First you walk through bakery galore..tons of fresh muffins, cookies, cakes, yummy goodness.. along with a coffee bar with the best hazelnut coffee! As youre walking through the aisles, there are samples everywhere (try their apple cider donuts!) and the reason I called it an adult's version of Chuck e Cheese is because there are puppet displays everywhere that dance and sing. There's so much to look at, taste, and buy that I feel like I'm getting pulled every which way. Okay, so I'm a little overboard with my love for grocery stores but I'm a pig..what can I say? :D Their hot food bar is BOMB too. Their wings are amazing, their fresh lobsters and scallops are soooo good and priced so fairly. Love their coleslaw, get it every time! Oh and not to forget their fresh orange juice and apple cider. Stews is obviously famous around the world and we are so luck to have one here in Norwalk! Their Stews branded items are either comparable in price to brand name or in some cases much cheaper (dairy, seafood and meat dept for sure). The only downfall is their prepared foods and produce are pretty expensive for what they are and have had issues with the quality of produce, specifically fruit. I visit about monthly and always snag an ice cream cone on the way out! Bonus that it's fun not just for kids but the only grocery store my husband actually enjoys visiting!! read more

I've been coming to this place for years and I love it! I was definitely one of the girls who came for the animals in the farm at the front of the store and listened to the singing cows inside. It's definitely an interactive experience. It's an amazing shopping experience. Everything is super fresh and at great deals, especially around major holidays like July 4th and Christmas! The bakery has great cakes and pies and it's reasonably priced to have a special order cake done at Stew's. Their dairy products are some of the freshest that I've ever tasted and have no growth hormones. Overall, definitely a place to come to for fresh fruits and veggies and great produce overall. We stopped in here to eat on a day trip in CT. We weren't shopping, but we wanted to check it out. I saw donut burger pictures online, however to my dismay and the kids' dismay they did not have these :-( I got a pound or so of the BBQ beef ribs. These were the best beef ribs I ever had. The guy behind the counter added a little extra in, too. We also got some corn fritters, sushi, samosas and mac n cheese. All good. The sushi was nice and fresh. We also picked up some apple cider donuts an the multi colored mini macaroons to take home. Then hit the ice cream stand. The chocolate dip was as good as you'll ever get and had the old fashioned taste. The chocolate ice cream was practically vanilla, but the kids liked the cotton candy flavor. We are still too full to eat the donuts. The mini macaroons aren't that good and are way overpriced at $9.99!!! WTF!!!??? Overall, it was good.
