I'm quite surprised that no one has written a review about this quaint little deli tucked away beside an equally unassuming ice cream shop on one of Hawthorne's main roads. Truth be told I lived in Hawthorne for three years and never knew about Stewart's either, but now I find myself making a weekly drive and visit to satisfy my cold cuts craving and to find more food items to keep my fridge happy. I am- as I'm sure all of you are as well- no stranger to "The Deli". But as far as I'm concerned all the ones I've visited have been exactly the same as the one before... there's never anything that has ever distinguished one deli from another, in my opinion: so long as the sandwich meats and pasta salads are fresh, you're good for your money's worth. It was a friend who told me about this place, him knowing all too well about this particular creature's habitual hankering for her daily turkey sandwiches. He told me about a whole baked turkey that the store makes everyday and keeps right on top of their deli display case, ready to carve, and my interest was immediately piqued. The first time I made my way over it was a little past noon, and I was immediately taken aback by how full the deli was. Some customers hung back while deciding on what to order while others formed a line that zig-zagged, somewhat confusingly, from the door to the register. But I also have to admit that I was quite impressed by how Stewart's makes certain improvisations to help keep the line flowing without causing unnecessary people-traffic. There are customers who come in that take their time trying to decide on what to order, there are others that come in already knowing what they want made-to-order, and then there are those that just grab-and-go. After eyeballing the baked turkey I started noticing the seemingly endless assortment of salads, heros and sandwiches scattered over the rest of the display tops and laid out on low tables in front of the displays, ready to be picked-up and carried straight to the register. This obviously allows the staff time to work on actual orders made by other patrons, and considering their extensive menu this was definitely a well played strategic move on their part. There are about 33 regular deli sandwiches, 13 hot sandwiches (including crab cake on Fridays), 8 specialty sandwiches (may I suggest the Sloppy Joe [Roast Beef, Turkey, Hard Salami, Honey Ham& Swiss, with lettuce, tomato, onion and Horseradish dressing], the German Hero [Roast Beef, Turkey, Pastrami& Swiss with Russian dressing on Rye] and the Smothered Pork BBQ?), an assortment of chicken cutlet sandwiches, soups& salads and, when available, a selection of hot entrees (the Chicken Pot Pie served in the winter is to-die for, otherwise you can choose from your regular pastas and meat dishes). And, yes- they do offer a limited breakfast menu (your typical choice of roll or bagel or breakfast sandwich); as well as simple desserts. And please make mental note of the fact that, when I order a sandwich or hero here (from $4.00-$6.75) I always end up splitting it with someone else. Either that or saving half for my next meal. I've also been to a friend's get-together where Stewart's catered a cold and hot buffet as well as party sandwiches, and everything was just as spot-on (price included) as when you ordered something from the deli itself. Make sure to ask for their catering menu or go online to take a gander in case you're looking for some simple catering in the near future. Oh, and two other perks: daily specials and delivery. This is not a place to think of sitting down to eat after ordering though, so keep in mind that the best S.O.P would be to take your time while deciding what to order, and then find a bench in the park- while the weather is still warm- where you can sit and enjoy the most perfect deli lunch (or breakfast) that you'll possibly ever encounter.

    Perfect sandwhich

Tried this for the first time today... Staff was pleasant and the selection of sandwiches drinks sides and chips are what you would normally see and and expect in a deli... orders two italian heros potato salad ice tea and bag of chips for 20. and change... I got home and realized the quality of the hero off the bat... perfect distribution of cold cuts to bread ratio .. bread was soft on the inside with slight crispy crust .... defff recommended.. think i found a new deli

I had that "Jersey Meat" (Taylor ham or pork roll, whatever you call it) egg and cheese but I'm happy I listened to the owner here and also got the Chopped Cheese. This breakfast sandwich was stellar but the Chopped Cheese was very possibly the best one I've ever had. The Jersey meat had a hard sear to it, which I love. Plenty of meat, cheese, and eggs on a fresh hard (Kaiser) roll. I got it with just pepper. Jersey meat is salty enough on its own and I typically don't rock ketchup with eggs. This would have been awesome with a splash of hot sauce though. Great sandwich. The chopped cheese was the hero here though. This was on a fresh jersey long roll and the seasoning in the meat was fantastic. Best seasoned ground beef I've probably ever had for a chopped cheese. Plenty of cheese, the roll, and the toppings were all very complimentary. The sauce is great on this as well. I got that extra drizzle overtop and I'm pumped I did. I had a side of it as well and trust me, I used it. Do not pass on this sandwich if you come here. The owner here is awesome, the food is great, plenty of parking on the streets around the business in a residential area, and the price is right. Salt Pepper Ketchup - Didn't Suck!
