Recently stopped by this cute local market while camping nearby at Donner Memorial State Park. I was looking for a place that had a reputation with the locals for making one of the best sandwiches, and I was not disappointed. It's not on their Yelp menu, but inside the shop, there was a flyer advertising a hot Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. I ordered that, plus tomatoes. While I thought the portions were a bit on the small side for $16, the sandwich was pretty good. The meat was fresh, good quality, well seasoned, and well cooked. The cheese was tasty and fresh, although I would have liked more of it. I also would have liked more veggies in general-- more onion, tomato, and bell pepper. I guess it's a good thing if my only complaint about this sandwich is that I wanted more of it. The employees were all super friendly. The sandwich counter is inside of a convenience store, which also sells drinks and souvenirs. Cute place to check out and get a sandwich. read more

I was absolutely shocked, disappointed and completely disgusted with my experience at Sticks. I entered the market on Sat Mar 15th at ~3:45pm to buy a few things I needed for dinner. When I entered a Frank Sinatra song was playing - rather loudly - outside but even louder inside. I grabbed my supplies and headed to the register only to hear the song change to Erika- the German SS March song. I looked at my 17 y/o son and gave him the the signal to hurry up and grab what wanted so we could get out. The man working the counter was so wasted it took him several minutes (not exaggerating) to ring up the customer before me who was buying a single beverage. The employee could barely talk, when he did he was impossible to understand due to the slurring. His hands shook so that it took several attempts to scan the items and he swayed back and forth like a drunkard. Ok, so maybe he has a condition? Maybe he was playing a radio station (?!) where this was the song that was playing- but what kind of radio station is this?? The benefit of doubt was lost when just before ringing us up this guy does the Nazi Salute (WTF?). My son asked me- in a whisper- did you see what he just did? I nod yes and think, should I just walk out, cancel the transaction, before I could do anything he then does it again...I paid for the items and we left, my son got in the car and told the passengers (his friend and younger brother), we just met a Nazi... Sorry- not sorry- but I will not be bringing my business to this store again. read more

Nice small but full-service market in Donner area. Has most anything you would need, prices are reasonable. Folks who work here are nice but a bit overwhelmed. The sandwich counter guy missed one of my orders, blame myself for not checking before I left but was in a hurry to get to my family on the beach so did not open the bag to check. Cool little place near Donner Lake. Solid sandwiches, great picnic food and a robust beer selection. Felt bad for the only dude working there doing the register and sandwich spot but he kills it. I got the Turkey BLT and the Tahoe Tessie which were both good. Tahoe Tessie is def my recommendation. Beer wise they had a solid selection and a lot of charcuterie options. If you are at Donner Lake, this is your go to. All sandwiches are Boars Head meat so you are getting good juicy meats. Bread is fresh and toppings are fresh. No complaints here. read more

Love this little store! Has just about everything you could need for the day, or weekend. They bottle their own sauces, etc... and their spaghetti sauce is Deeelicious! My son wanted a sandwich after his baseball game so we chose sticks market that had very promising sandwich. A cute little sushi/sandwich place located inside of a liquor store. We went sort of late in the day so they had ran out a lot of the stuff... there was only one guy making sandwiches so took a little bit to get our meals .. since located in a liquor store there was no place to sit and eat nor a bathroom to use. So we ate in the car.. and boy was the sandwich delicious and humongous; definitely a meal to share. All ingredients were super fresh. I sure wish I could have made it back the second day to get another one. But I will come back for sure the next time I'm in Truckee. read more

The best accessible market for campers at Emigrant Gap and Donner Lake. It's so close to Donner Lake Village where we stayed before. Our hotel had a full kitchen so we decided to cook some meals. Now that we're back in the area, I'm glad it's not so far from Emigrant Gap Thousand Trails where we're camping at. Everything we needed was here plus more! I paid extra to "upgrade" to tri tip when he offered it to me and I of coarse said please, but when I got home and took the first bite I was more than disappointed. Every since the two women started working at Sticks, I have tried avoiding this place. I absolutely love all their products and they have the best sandwiches ever. Every encounter I have had the women are completely unfriendly, rude, moaning, groaning. I have never been greeted when coming into Sticks or told to have a nice day. Kindness goes a long way, I understand if there are only 2 people working it can get overwhelming and frustrating when the crowds come in but the LEAST you could do is put on a smile and let customers know the wait will be a little longer than usual. I tried to come in 3 days in a row to get a sandwich but was turned down ALL 3 times in the most disrespectful way complaining they are understaffed and don't get breaks and no one has time to wash the dishes. Overall the sandwiches are AMAZING but the energy in this store has gone completely downhill and that is why I have been avoiding it. Very disappointed. read more

WARNING: if you think COVID is real and you would prefer not to get it - do not set foot in this store. I walked in to see both men working behind the counter with their masks below their noses. When I got my item and came up to the counter, I asked the one man still there if he would lift the mask above his nose. He looked me in the eyes and flat out said no. I was speechless. No explanation. No apology. Just no. I'm kicking myself for not immediately walking out. Instead I told him that masks are ineffective that way but he didn't care that he was endangering my health and his. I will never give them my business again. Just have to say that my father and I stopped in here on a whim one day and found a really great hidden treasure. We were starving and wanted some junk food but found one of the best sandwich shops I've ever been in. Very disappointed to see the lady checker and the manager both ignoring mask safety protocols for COVID-19. I asked the checker kindly to cover her nose while she checked out our groceries, and she defiantly retorted that she would not. (If she has a medical condition like asthma, she could wear a shield, or get a job outdoors.) Likewise the manager who was making sandwiches also did not wear a mask over mouth and nose. We have been frequent customers but will not return unless we feel the employees handling food are taking appropriate measures for everyone's safety. read more

Coming to Donner Lake? Make sure you stop off here to get you weekend supplies. They have everything you need to set you up for you stay at the lake. I love what the new owners have done with the place except they no longer sell fishing licenses. In the past getting our fishing licenses used to give us a good excuse to stop and get our groceries too, it was our summer tradition... used to be a one stop shop. Now we have to go into town and honestly we find ourselves going to Safeway since its right next to ace. Still I love this market and highly recommend it. Sticks market is a cute little market on Donner lake- you can get anything you need to have a day on the beach there. However, it just got a lot better with the addition of Poke on the Lake!! I think I get a Poke bowl about once a week - and I would get it more if I could:) The fish is super fresh and she always has a new special each week! ALSO- I think my favorite part is the toppings:) You not only get a healthy amount of fish - but you get SO many toppings! Avocado, Crab, mango (and more) and its all included in the price:) SO thankful to have this spot - keep up the good work! read more

This is the new market which took the spot of the old Donner Pines Market. It's the same building and everything, just remodeled with nicely stained wood and a new sign out front, and what I think is a nice new overhaul inside. It's very well stocked for a small place on the lake. They've got a nice small but adequate selection of fresh fruits and veggies and a killer liquor wall. It's like a real liquor store! Also, all the little incidentals that you may have forgotten if you're doing a day on the lake....sunscreen, toys, fishing stuff. It's a good spot. read more

I actually feel badly that I have to write this negative review, because I like to support small businesses, especially during COVID, and this cute, well-stocked market is right near my house on Donner Lake. HOWEVER, this review is for the DELI/SANDWICH SHOP inside the market.... we stopped in for sandwiches on a Thursday at 1:45 pm. Not a rush time, not a peak period, not a vacation.... the two guys at the sandwich bar were practically sweating, they seemed so stressed out by the sandwich order they were making - and it was TWO sandwiches. We were not in a rush and calmly put in our order then went to wait outside. So the sandwiches are pricey - 9.99 for all the smallish (6-8 inch) sandwiches. I ordered a Reuben but asked them to leave off the pastrami - melted cheese, pickles, mustard, etc..... well guess what? No swiss cheese. Next choice - how about Gouda (they had five cheeses on their menu board: Swiss, cheddar, gouda, provolone and jack.). No Gouda. OK fine, put provolone on my Reuben. I wish I had taken a picture - the Dutch crunch roll wasn't crunchy, they put ONE slice of provolone on the bread, with mustard and pickles. That's it. That was the sandwich. And they took off $1 because I skipped the main meat. So it was 8.99. It was sadly worse than a PB&J I could have slapped together at home. The sandwiches at SAFEWAY are way bigger, way better and there are many more choices. Skip the deli sandwiches, but you can stop in for BEER and WINE because that is clearly the focus of this place. read more
