I'm giving it 2 stars only b/c of the potential I see it has. I REALLY wanted to like it, and I'm willing to give it another shot, but I ended up leaving the restaurant PISSED!
I went w/ a group of 7 people and we sat on the cute patio upstairs (yup, they have a patio). My friends were all about the tater tots and dipping sauce. I was thinking, "What kind of a sushi restaurant serves tater tots?" One w/ an identity crisis, just like all the hipsters who worked there. The menu, while an intriguing mix of sushi and Mexican and American, (seriously, tater tots?!), seemed to be indecisive and too eager to please everyone, like Cameron in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off." If you're gonna be a sushi restaurant, be a sushi restaurant and be proud. Grow some balls.
Speaking of balls, I ordered the sticky rice balls which is where it all went downhill. My balls didn't come until my friends were finishing up eating... 30 minutes after theirs came!!! I've worked in a restaurant, so I know it's hard to make everything come out at the same time, but 30 minutes?! It not like they were Rocky Mountain oysters and you had to fly to Denver to neuter the bull. Not to mention that my friend ordered a salad, and it came out at the same time as mine. A freakin salad! All they had to do was throw some lettuce on a plate and grill some chicken. Took less time to make than the stir fried noodles our other friends were eating.
Now on to the waitress. Ahhh, she was a breath of fresh air after H St Country Club, making sure we had enough water and dipping sauce, etc... until the meals came out. She didn't check on us ONCE to say, "Sorry, the kitchen's running behind," or anything. After 10 minutes, we flagged her down and all she said was, "The kitchen's... UGH!" and stormed back inside. I should have just canceled my order right then!!! Ten minutes later she came back and said it was coming right out, so I didn't cancel it... but we didn't see her again for ANOTHER 10 minutes!?
When the balls FINALLY got there, I felt sick from the greasy tater tots I shouldn't have been eating at a sushi place to begin with. The balls were drowning in sauce (and it takes a lot for me to say that b/c I like things saucy) and I couldn't even taste the sushi. They were gross, disappointing, and not worth a 5 minute wait, let alone 30!
Now comes the check. Not only did she charge me for the saucy balls and my friend for the salad, but she also made sure to add in her grat. Granted, I know it is sometimes customary to add in gratuity for parties of 6 or more, but 8 is usually customary. I'll have to check the menu for the little warning next time I go... IF I ever go again, which is a BIG if. I wanted to talk to the manager, but I didn't want to embarrass my friends, especially since I had already sent back the horrific sangria at H St, so I sucked it up and paid for the sickening, saucy balls I waited half an hour for but barely touched, and now I'm just bitter. Still mad at myself for not canceling my order or demanding that they be taken off the bill. Apparently I need to grow some balls, too... but they definitely won't be sticky or made of rice! Time to put myself out in Denver =P read more
