H Street is my hood so when friends from the other 3 lesser quadrants come to visit, Sticky Rice is a must. The style is eclectic, (I'd call it Hipster-lite) the food is good, but the service could be better. The hosts aren't always the friendliest but I can imagine it's daunting dealing with the crowds of people who still flock there. Every time I've been there, I spring for the tater tots. They are as said, addictive and the dipping sauce is amazing. We usually ask for extra and they are more than happy to provide it. Some complaints that friends have had regarding the sushi rolls and that the specialty ones almost all have cream cheese in them. Fair enough but I just LOVE the godzirra roll and I definitely don't mind it. That Godzirra is huge and usually I can't finish it so if you order it, I'd dissuade you from ordering much else. Lychee martini was to die for and delicious and after one i was pretty loopy so it's a decent bargain even for $10. I also appreciate that they take reservations and have expanded, drastically reducing the wait time. One star off only because it sometimes takes quite a while for us to get an order in and drink refills can be rare as the night gets busy. That said, I will go back many many more times. read more

I'll be the first to admit that there is about a 5% chance I'll ever give a sushi restaurant fewer than three stars; I just really like sushi. So obviously I didn't hesitate to get the Living Social voucher a few months ago. My husband and I happened to have a free night, so we made a reservation and trekked out to H Street on a Thursday around 6:30. I drove, he metro/walked; such is the dilemma of H Street. I'd been reading the menu for MONTHS and was READY: I was going to order the Godzirra Roll and the Sticky Balls. Other dishes were TBD on the spot; I let my husband choose them. In retrospect this was a terrible idea because he chose three simple and ordinary maki rolls (spicy tuna, California, Philly), each at about $7 a pop. If I'd wanted a California Roll I'd have gone to Harris Teeter after work, but alas, this is a domestic beef and not one with Sticky Rice. In any case, they were pretty good, though a little less tightly rolled than I prefer. The Godzirra Roll was good: lots of crunchy/spicy/creamy/fresh ingredients, but again not very tight and with a lot of chewy seaweed binding. Still, I'd get it again, though my husband didn't really like it. The Sticky Balls were excellent. I was expecting lots of small balls and there were two oblong-ish "balls" on the plate, each cut into three pieces. I ordered a drink called the TWP (I think), which was some sugary concoction of orange soda and a cherry and alcohol, and it was pretty much what you'd expect it to be. Sadly, I knew what I was getting into and this was still my drink of choice. It always is. Husband got a beer. We sat at the first table at the top of the stairs and we weren't crazy about it, but it was our fault for not asking to be moved before it got crowded. It ended up not being a problem at all, which is good, because we expected to be elbowed constantly. Our server was the most hipstery of hipsters, and was incredibly nice and quick and attentive. I am surprised at how surprised I was at the hipster, flannel-clad, Junior-Mafia-seamlessly -transitions-to-Pearl-Jam-in-the-background vibe of this place, but it was cool. Our bill came to about $60. I'll totally go back and instead of a lame $25 worth of maki I'll get some appetizers instead. If I could rate this place a 3.5 I would, but I can't bring myself to give it a 4 yet. read more

The first time I went, I realize now I made the mistake of not trying some of their specialties...and now that I have, whoa nelly. I am almost afraid to tell you how good some of the rolls are, in fear that this place will become even more popular! True -- Sushi -- party in your mouth stuff. Any place with vegan sushi rolls is good in my book and this didn't disappoint. I forgot the name of the roll but it had forbidden black rice and all veggies and vegan cream cheese on the inside. Rib lollipops are what I would order here, if I ever come back. On a Wednesday night at seven, we were told that the wait for a table was 30 minutes although the place was half empty. We opted for the bar and it's wobbly stools. The barkeep was a tattooed goth lady who began working in overdrive once the place packed in. This place is dark, loud, and far too hip for its little hole-in-the-wall rickety building. Now to the food. The regular sushi roll was a sad six pieces which just didn't seem anything special. The lettuce wrap came with a bowl of filling in sauce. Okay for $8. The shrimp with noodle was like something you'd make at home with a little prefab sauce and thawed shrimp from TJ's. At $9, it was an okay portion. But, only the ribs made me want to be alone, left to lick the toasted sesame seeds and sweet glaze from the crevices between my fingers while picking out the tender meat from my teeth... read more

Sticky Rice...I might just be in love with you. Mostly. The food is amazing. A welcome twist on Asian that I heartily enjoy without getting crazy. Interesting sauces and additions without too much of a departure from what you'd expect. I highly recommend: The ribs. Slightly spicy and flatly amazing. The Sticky Balls - tuna and crab delightfully deep fried. The Billy Goat's Gruff - broiled yellowtail and goat cheese. Um, yummy... And... the tots. I know a lot of places claim to know what they're doing with their tots, but this place isn't lying. Perfectly crispy and un-put-downable with the sauce, you might want to consider what else you're ordering if you get tots. That other stuff will get neglected and cold... The ambiance overall is sometimes a little questionable. There are definitely a couple different things going on... Downstairs is more like a pseudo-trashy club that happens to serve food and the upstairs is more like a sit-down place. Strange juxtaposition... Downstairs they also allow whomever to plug in their iPod, iPhone, whatever and play - blast - whatever they want for everyone to enjoy - cringe at - during dinner. This, as you may have gathered, is the one thing that I'm not in love with. I like the idea, but any idea without any regulation, can go astray. I've literally been sitting and can't think to form a question to the person across the table let alone hear anything we might be trying to talk about. Perhaps some oversight on the volume... Other than the one issue, which has nothing to do with the food but admittedly affects the overall feel, I have to say I love this place. I haven't tried the Brunch on Sundays, but I'm interested. Let my dinner be a lesson to you: order CAREFULLY, lest you end up with fried everything! My sister and I got sweet potato tots and three rolls from the vegetarian side of the menu to share. The tots came out cold, but were still yummy, especially with sauces. Another living social coupon and another last minute redemption visit ! Fortunately the last minute planning went smoothly as I was the first customer of the day during lunch. I started off lunch with a side of Tots as many Yelpers seemed mesmerized the tiny fried crunchy potatoes. The serving size of a "side" was HUGE! Unless you love tots stick with the side serving rather than appetizer serving. The tots were crispy and not greasy. They reminded me of Sonic tator tots. Nice but not out of this world tots. About 10 minutes later my sushi was delivered. The Snap, Crackle, Pop roll was indeed a monster maki roll of 10 pieces made up of salmon, cucumbers, jalapenos, tobiko and tempura crunchies. The south roll served as my desert since it's comprised of tempura fried sweet potato with a splash of honey. I think this roll could be a hit if they deep fried the entire roll with the sweet potato inside. Last but not least, the Pokie roll was sashimi freshness at its best ! I enjoyed eating the tuna and seaweed as the seasoning of sesame oil, ginger garlic, scallions, tohgarashi and soy sauce with toasted coconut was nicely prepared. In a world-class city like DC, I would have expected tons of vegetarian options, but I had to endure a lot of ho-hum (and crazy expensive) eateries before venturing the crazy menu at Sticky Rice. I'd heard great things about it, so I went without even looking at the menu online first. Holy moly, this place is fantastic! People often look at me quizzically when I ask for vegetarian sushi, but the (very friendly and attentive) server immediately had a host of recommendations. Before we knew it we had several platefuls of vegetarian delights ranging from classics like avocado rolls to vegetarian "sticky balls," (called garden balls) which are so freakishly delicious they may be illegal in several states. There were LOTS of innovative offerings too, and the owner, John Yamashita, came over and was super cool as well, and had some great tips about visiting DC. He even rescued us when he asked if we had figured out the parking meter! (Oops. We hadn't even seen it.) Drinks were also great. The tofu bites? Amazing! But the Dirty Vegan...holy cow, this was phenomenal! Plus, they really seem to "get" vegetarians and have everything clearly marked on the menu for vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. It also seemed like they were totally used to dealing with allergies and sensitivities. All-in-all, I felt like Sticky Rice was ahead of the curve in lots of ways. Finally, the place was packed, yet the service was still great. I wish we had one in Tucson, and am thankful to have found a fantastic place that was such a great value in DC! I hate writing bad reviews but I highly urge you to reconsider going here. I've heard poor reviews about this place, but I thought, hey how bad could it be? Plus, I live relatively close so thought it was worth a shot. I got one of their rolls and their Singaporean noodles. The rolls were below average considering they cost $14. I can seriously say the sushi you get at the supermarket is better. The Singaporean noodles were bland and sad. I had to drench it in Sriracha to give it the slightest hint of flavor. I had good vibes from the get-go since the restaurant's logo is a stylized Chinese "mi" (rice) character, that resembled grains of sticky rice visualized with big, plump strokes. Yeah. Big, plump strokes. The inside is neato and done up completely unlike your typical sushi/Asian conglomerate place. Exposed brick and deep booths (fitting you and your five closest skinny friends), beers actually ON TAP, dimmed lights instead of creepy pink and purple mood lighting, and self-deprecating dish names (Godzirra, ho ho, the irony). I liked that the downstairs bathroom doors were hinged like Japanese noren curtains (but went all the way to the floor, thankfully). I was early meeting a friend here and nabbed a bar stool right in front of the three (maybe four) taps and ordered a Samurai beer brewed by Great Divide. It was a (what else) rice beer, nice and dry that would complement most of the food there. Bartenders were efficient and amiable, and engaged me in tipsy banter. You can choose your noodle type with some of the dishes (udon, vermicelli, buckwheat, or forego noodles and have just plain rice); I chose udon with my green curry with pork. Maybe a bizarre combination, but it worked. It was spicier than I expected, but the vegetables were fresh and crispy, the presentation was cool in a deep stoneware bowl, and it was large enough that I couldn't finish it. And I finish everything. Anyway, the atmosphere is cool, the music is good, and the food is tasty, but nothing stellar. Oh Sticky Rice. In the nearly four years that I've been frequenting this place, I can't believe I haven't taken the time to write a review. I guess the issue is that sometimes it's totally awesome and I can't wait to go back. The other half of the time (maybe 3/4) it's awful and I hate it. Go for the food (a solid place to get sushi on H St) and the ambiance (hipster punk rock), but NEVER go for the service. I repeat, DO NOT EXPECT GOOD SERVICE. This isn't always true, but the majority of the time the hipsterific waitstaff can barely be bothered to take your order, much less refill a drink. Definitely start with tots, but don't eat all of them because the sushi is worth saving room for. My boyfriend and I had dinner here last night. He wanted sushi but was reluctant to come here at first because it didn't seem like a place that specialized in sushi. He's obsessed with good sushi. I really wanted to try it though. When we arrived, we were told that the wait would be about 20-30 minutes. Fortunately, we were lucky enough to score two seats at the bar. I liked the atmosphere. My bf said it reminded him a lot of Philly bar/restaurants. I liked the rough around the edges feel of it. Our drinks were tasty--a little weak but good. We had lettuce wraps for our app. They were really good. The edamame that we had wasn't bright enough. I think they were overlooked a little. I had curry fried rice with chicken. It was aight. My bf had unagi, tuna, and salmon nigiri. He said it was good but not good enough to come back for the sushi alone. I liked the vibe and atmosphere more than the food. I would still go back to eat cause the food wasn't bad and the drinks were good. The service at the bar was ok. So I understand that COVID has caused businesses to change strategies on the fly but this was not well planned. Getting the food was the sketchiest I have experienced and the food was mediocre. We decided to order from sticky rice yesterday at a rec from a friend. We have never ordered before but my husband knew it was on h st. We made a trip out of it and tucked our two month old in the car seat and I plugged in the address it gave me when making the order. I am not well versed with that area so when it said fenwick st as the address, I made nothing of it until my husband asked where we were going when he saw it wasn't h st. When we got there it was a literal alley with people milling about. The address was the door of a clearly closed run down auto shop. I tried calling their number from the website to no response. My husband did not want to go into a sketchy alley so he drove us to the h st location. The place looked closed and a sign said they were temporarily closed with no other information. I tried calling the number again to no response and looked at their fb and insta sites for any updates to no success. My husband called his friend who said they ordered from the h st location six days ago so that was very odd. I looked at google and Yelp reviews with no success. He thought I might have ordered from a scam site. Finally we decided to go back to the sketchy alley at Fenwick and saw some people walking out with paper bags. So my husband went into the alley and found nothing except people wandering about and a man harassing him saying he has been looking for him since the morning. He started to head back to the car when he saw a small sign tucked in at the corner of the alley saying sticky rice with a different number from the website. He called that number and at first they said they didn't have the order. Suddenly they then said they found the order and they said to wait there. A guy came out of a garage that was half open and gave him the brown bag. The food itself was mediocre but not worth the price. The miso soup was $6 for barely a cup of broth! The chicken that my husband got has no taste. The hash browns were soggy. The sushi tasted like something I could get from my work cafeteria. Once again I understand COVID can cause crazy changes but this was not well done at all. And the baby looked at us like we were the crazy ones by the time we were done with the adventure. read more

We stopped by here yesterday to try the tater tots since the Washington Post says they're one of the top 40 dishes to try in DC. It was a Sunday afternoon, and we had our 3mo old baby so I was super relieved to find the place relatively quiet and low key. We got a table on the patio which was small and had just few tables. So even better with the baby in case of a melt down. We hate to provide that kind of entertainment for other diners. The tater tots delivered. It was a big ole bucket of them and they were crispy and tasty. The somewhat spicy dipping sauce was also good. Overall, I felt like this place was a bit over-priced. We had a scoutmob (they're good 'til June 12th!) and the bill still came to $23 for two dishes, the tots and one adult beverage. Actually, that doesn't sound so bad now. But that was after the $15 discount. I got the millennium roll which was yummy but so so tiny. I would give this place three stars but our server was fantastic. She was super nice and helpful and accommodating. She knew the menu well and gave great suggestions. When we needed to change our order to go (see infant meltdown), she barely blinked and made it all happen smoothly. She even helped our meal be "dine in" just enough to make use of the scoutmob deal possible. She's lovely - wish we got her name so we could give her the shout out she deserves. Sticky Rice fills this weird niche between sushi and american food that I am finding more and more these days. I don't love it, as sometimes I just want high quality sushi. This is harder than in seems in DC, and is quite frustrating. However, one of my favorite things in this world to eat is tater tots. And Sticky Rice is more than happy to oblige my inner Napolean Dynamite. Tots tots tots. What more can I say? Don't come expecting a traditional Japanese sushi experience. You will not find that here. What you will find is a lot of delicious fried things and tots. Did I mention the tots? It also has a lively atmosphere with pretty cool decorations and a decent happy hour. My advice? If you are planning for a night out on H Street, I would start with happy hour at Sticky Rice for some tots and drinks, head to Toki for ramen, and finish at Rock and Roll to dance the night away and stave off the inevitable food coma. read more

Came here for a birthday gathering and initial entrance is "okay... Can the food be better than how it looks?" Potato pop tarts were soooo oily and icky. Couldn't eat any more than 3... I know this place has been criticized for not being authentic Japanese or high quality sushi, but it doesn't pretend to be that. I guess I'm not that big on sushi and traditional Japanese food, so it doesn't really bother me. It's a fun friendly environment that draws a diverse crowd of hipsters and neighborhood locals. Great for people watching. Good place to get a bite to eat before a show at the Rock and Roll Hotel down the street, which is one of my favorite concert venues. It was one of the first restaurants to open up on H Street NE, and still has some of that laid back coolness from those days, that is sadly missing now that H Street NE has become more developed. It has really excellent but simple drinks. I like the Blushing Geisha with pomegranate juice and gin or the spiked lemonade with blueberry vodka. As I said I'm not a huge sushi/raw fish person, so I like to get the spicy chicken potstickers and the fried tofu, which are both amazing. I have also tried the tuna tartare which is tasty and comes with a refreshing seaweed salad. read more

Young ones like this place. Eat enough great sushi and other Japanese dishes and experience says Sticky Rice makes crap. The rice is stale- I didn't think that was possible. The fish is not the highest quality and the sauces taste right out of a can- Alpo should be made aware of this. On the plus side, their salads aren't too bad. The atmosphere is perfect for the young ones- loud music, hiply dressed servers with a bit of 'tude, and other young ones feeling cool because they picked the cool place to go. I had a blast even though the L7's in the crowd were too cool to rock to P.E. *waves palms down the crotch of my pants in a rhythmic fashion*, but fun was had by all. The overpriced $2 Tecate flowed (I feel like a fish tank right now) and I'm grateful that I actually remembered enough of last night to review the place. Pretty surprised this place only has 3 stars, maybe because it's kind of incongruent: good sushi in a busy, hip, funky bar. We tried a bit of everything and it was pretty solid, and topped it off with tater tots, which also makes no sense, but somehow works. They have tall boys of beer. And karaoke. And cute indie-type girls (and dudes too, I'd assume.) If you're going there looking for a traditional sushi spot or even a modern, sleek sushi spot, you will be disappointed. Wow. My friend and I showed up on a Wednesday at 6 and waited a full hour for a table. Except that when I went upstairs to use the bathroom, I saw SIX empty booths. An hour later when we were finally seated, most were still empty. If Sticky Rice is taking reservations and then leaving tables empty for over an hour, that just seems ridiculous. We could have eaten and left at one of those booths in the time we waited to be seated. The staff was completely unapologetic and borderline hostile, as if we should be so lucky to be waiting an hour at such a hipster-y, awesome place (I still don't understand why it seems to be so popular, except that there are no other sushi places near it). Food took almost another hour to arrive, and the tater tots we ordered were forgotten about. When it came, it was about average. My shrimp tempura sushi had about one piece of shrimp, divided between six rolls. The noodles were ok but incredibly salty to the point that I couldn't eat the leftovers the next day. I won't bother coming back here again to eat average food after waiting an hour and dealing with apathetic, unfriendly staff. This place really isn't worth the wait or the hype. read more

My friends are obsessed with sticky rice. I finally had a chance to use my livingsocial deal there a couple weeks ago. I've never really had cusine like at Sticky Rice, to say it's sushi is very deceptive. For me sushi is light, focused on the delicate flavors of the raw fish. Sticky Rice is serves Americanized Japanese comfort food-and it's pretty damn good once you accept it's not supposed to taste like traditional sushi. Get the dishes that seem like Paula Dean took over the sushi kitchen. Deep fried rice balls...yum! Being a novice at ordering I got the sashimi, which I could live without if I went again. The lychee martinis were very good tasted similar to something I've had at mandu. Like most of the H-Street spots Sticky Rice is in a converted townhouse. I always thought the interior would look very differently when passing outside the restaurant. I thought it would be dim with lots of oriental lights. The decor was actual very minimal. The seating wasn't very comfortable, so I would not suggest going here for a long period of time. However its a great place to go with a few friends. read more

With a little over an hour to spare on Friday night, my mom and I decided to grab a quick pre-performance bite at Sticky Rice. Located in the developing Atlas District, Sticky Rice is one of several restaurants along the booming H Street Corridor. The atmosphere was inviting and quirky yet understated, so we were shocked when the waitress exclaimed how lucky we were to be immediately seated as the restaurant typically has a long wait on weekends and encourages patrons to make reservations. Eager to order, we decided on two of the house specialties: tater tots and sushi. Although most known for their "bucket of tots", we opted for the day's special "sweet tots" - mini sweet potato tots served with a honey mustard dipping sauce. Our sushi order included one of my standard favorites the Philly Roll (an inside-out roll with smoked salmon, cream cheese and scallions), Avocado tempura (cream cheese or vegan tofutti, cucumbers, avocado, spicy sauce or vegan spicy sauce and drizzled with ponzu and scallions) and The Yum Yum (smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado, tobiko and spicy sauce drizzled with eel sauce and scallions). Apparently we were in the mood for smoked salmon and cream cheese. O_o Although not a typical combination, the tots and sushi definitely hit the spot! The sweet tots were deliciously crispy and the honey mustard sauce gave them the perfect kick. The sushi was fresh and the tempura batter, light and flavorful. During our brief visit, the staff seemed friendly and attentive. I'm looking forward to returning in order to experience more of what Sticky Rice has to offer. read more

The rock 'n' roll vibe is fun, but Sticky Rice is surprisingly expensive for mediocre sushi. Like the decor, the rolls are interesting and creative. Lots of odds and ends in there, with interesting textures galore. Are they good? Well... they're good when they're half-price (Monday nights after 10:30pm) and washed down with much beer. And even then they require drenching in soy sauce. On the upside, the small plates are sometimes ambitious, and they occasionally deliciousness. I've been to Sticky Rice many times over the years and continued to place orders for pick up during the pandemic . Food is always great !

As I sit here waiting on my server to return to place my dessert order, 25 mins later I might add.. I am completely frustrated at the service we are currently receiving. We came in and were immediately seated as the location wasn't busy. We weren't seated with anything but menus. The server, named Jake, came to our table and took our drink order, returned with them and took our food. That was the last we saw of her, even though she was a few feet away at the bar, once our food came we still had to ask the food runner for Chopsticks, sauce dishes and napkins. We thoroughly enjoyed our food! Once we were done and after sitting for awhile, Jake returns. She takes the plates, my cousin orders something else and I requested a dessert menu, 20 mins later and my server still hasn't come to see which dessert I would like. The Food runner, P, notices that we have been sitting for awhile and asks what we need. I told him my dessert choice... 5 mins later he comes back past and asks have I received my dessert.. I stated no, he then goes to get his manager. Meanwhile we can literally see Jake at the bar chatting away with other customers. Once Renee arrived she asked if I wanted the cheesecake I stated yes, 20 mins ago. She apologizes and offer the cheesecake for free but tells me it will still take a few mins to come out as they can't rush items. I said okay. Finally Jake makes her way back to our table to tell me the cheesecake should be out shortly and if we need anything else. The answer is absolutely not! I would recommend this place based on the food and the food runner P, but as far as Jake's service and the managers simple resolve and lack of any corrective statements to Jake it only deserves a 2 star review. read more

Service wasn't great - had water and food spilled on me and they were short staffed. Sushi and the curries were really good beyond that!

I really do like this place. The bartenders have always been super nice and pleasant -- not too in your face, but very attentive. I like the atmosphere actually. I don't go there for fancy eats, but solid, near-the-neighborhood, friendly and consistent eats. I like the Yum Yum roll, pan fried dumplings and the giant bucket of tots! It has a fun bar scene, too. Kaz still has the best sushi IMHO (for quality and preparation), but I go to Sticky Rice more often for sure. read more

The atmosphere and the food was AMAZING!!! The sauce with the tater tots is soooo good. I also had the curried shrimp with rice noodles!!! AWESOMESAUCE!!!!! I will definitely go back. The bartender made me the best dirty martini I've had!!! read more
