Sticky Rice where have you been all my life! Every dish I tried was better than the previous one. In full disclosure I am trying a no meat diet for a few days (maybe weeks) so I didn't try any of the meat options and still everything blew me away. The lettuce wraps were a beautiful balance of flavor and crunchiness and a touch of Sriracha just made then even better. The Garden Balls were perfectly fried and the spicy rice should be a stand alone item on the menu! The Gardens on Fire roll was delicious and a great way to end my meal. I decided to go out on a "school" night to a spot on H St to grab a relatively late (after 9:45) bite to eat. I had never been to sticky rice before and always wanted to give it a try, so I walked in. The downstairs was mainly seating for bar patrons, but I wanted to sit at a table, so upstairs we went. The seating area is very wide open, so it's definitely not a quiet place when all tables are occupied. It was surprisingly full! The server a couple of times almost rushing us to order. Once we decided, we got her attention so she could take our order. Rushingly, she asked what we wanted. I am a SUCKER for tater tots and noticed them on the menu - YUM. Feeling awful for initially wanting TTs only, I decided to order tempura shrimp, California and eel sushi rolls. My friend ordered the sesame chicken with white rice and then asked the server if it was better than Szechuan chicken. She said she thought so because it's not as spicy. We also ordered a side of broccoli (me feeling guilty about eating late and those dang tater tots!!) So the sushi rolls showed up to the table along with TTs and broccoli. All items were decent (those TTs were YUMMY after we finally got ketchup for them - the sauce that comes with it wasn't so great) but after about 20 mins I asked about the sesame chicken ....our server looked at us with a straight face and said that we never ordered it AND that she wrote down everything we asked for. She then said the kitchen is closed. My friend and I looked at each other and said in unison "OK". She left the table and my friend confirmed with me that it was ordered. I agreed in hearing it being ordered. Apparently she was confused and didn't write it down, so we never got to taste the sesame chicken and left feeling some kind of way about the service. I am beyond livid with my experience here. I pre-ordered sushi for Christmas Day online, as well as pre-paid. It said everywhere online that they were open Christmas Day and even let my order go through. When it was around time for my order to be delivered I tracked my order online and it said it was waiting for someone to pick my order up. More than 10 calls, 2 voicemails and a text later, I can only assume they're not actually open. If it wasn't for the fact that I have COVID and cannot leave the house to get food, this wouldn't have been as big of a deal. I specifically chose this place because it was open on Christmas, could deliver, AND I could pre-order. I really really love sushi, so I decided to order some from Sticky Rice through uber eats. I've never had a problem with ordering sushi from other places through the app but the sushi I got from Sticky Rice was subpar. For starters, they aren't using sushi rice. I was clear to me that my roll was wrapped in jasmine rice. I got a spicy tuna roll and in the roll I got normal tuna and cucumbers tossed in the spicy mayo. The cucumbers still had their outer skin on them. All I could taste was the cucumber skin. I also got a crunchy shrimp roll, it was nothing really to talk about. There wasn't anything noteable again. Save your money and go eat somewhere else. The sticky balls are pretty disappointing and the fried cheesecake is even sadder. I understand it's labeled as "Asian Fusion" but the sticky balls are like a knock-off takoyaki but with a weird, unsatisfactory consistency and the outside coating also wasn't crispy. I'll upload my pictures to show what a soggy MESS the cheesecake is. Everything was melted and soggy. If I'm going to spend money and eat my weight in calories, it might as well be for something good. For this price, I would rather go get my guilty cheat meal fix at Halal Guys, Ben's Chili Bowl or just about anything else on H Street. Sticky Rice has become our "go-to" delivery place during the quarantine. As many DC'ians know a lot of the Asian restaurants here are "fusion" meaning they do Korean and Chinese and Thai and Japanese...and most of them dont do any of it well. (As a Californian, I'd never seen that before.) Anyway, StickyRice is a rare exception. I think their sushi rolls are great, there Singapore Noodles are amazing and the Curry Rice is pretty darn good. Don't waste your time at Sticky Rice. My wife and I wanted sushi and we had been to sticky rice before and liked it but never again. We sat on the 2nd floor that had a number of flies buzzing around the tables. We had to get our own plates and utensils after repeatedly asking for them. Our server disappeared for some time and did not put our entire order in. It took him 15 minutes to bring us the wrong beer and another 20 after that to bring us a new one. We finally received our entire order after placing it again with the hostess. She was the only bright spot of a rather dismal meal. She was busing tables, running to the kitchen and gave us our bill because our server disappeared once again. Unfortunately, the bill was incorrect because our server decided to charge us for the free beers he gave us for the long wait. The server finally came back and apologized and had the nerve to say, " You have been here before so I am sure we will see you again." He couldn't be more wrong. There are a ton of options in DC with better food and service. I will never be back. If I were you I would avoid Sticky Rice and spend your hard earned money elsewhere. read more

Love the variety of sushi and noodles here. Most sushi restaurants have limited vegetarian rolls, but the menu here is super creative with their flavors. I've been a fan of Sticky Rice since I lived in Richmond and this place has the same vibe, which I love. Definitely more space that the Richmond location, but there still can be a wait if you don't have reservations on the weekends. We ordered the lettuce wraps to start off and do not fooled by its description in the menu. The sauce in this dish was so good. The tofu and vegetable were in a bowl with a sweet, umami, a little spicy brown sauce. Those flavors wrapped in a crispy lettuce leaf was amazing. We followed this up with various vegetarian rolls and the Forbidden Veganzirra was by far superior to what else we ordered. The other rolls like the Garden of Eden just didn't have that punch of flavor I desired. The same goes with the spicy tofu roll. They were good, but not mind blowing. I usually get the bucket of tots, which is the best appetizer one can have, but I didn't have the room in my stomach to eat everything I desired. Just means I gotta come back again! read more

I dined at Sticky Rice a couple weekends ago, and overall it was a decent experience. Right when you walk in, the entry space is small with not much room to move around. If you have to wait, be prepared to be a little cramped. The bar is festive with lights, and we opted to dine at the bar instead of wait for a sit down table. I don't know if it was the night or day of the week, but they had two TVs playing music videos from the 2000s, so some serious throwback jams. One small comment is the volume of the music...it was way too loud, and at times, I couldn't even hear the people I was eating with or the bar staff. In terms of food, we ordered the shrimp coconut with rice and Mongolian beef with udon noodles. We started with a sushi roll as well. They also have a nice happy hour for beer, so we sipped on those while waiting for food. The coconut curry sauce was smooth with a hint of sweet, yet definitely had a hidden kick. The shrimp were also prepared just right, not overcooked and gummy, which can sometimes happen if you cook it for too long. Nice evening out on H street, and this place was nice to try for the first time. Be prepared to wait a little for food, but definitely order a small plate and drink to hold you over. read more

Vegans beware!! I order from here at least once a week and have never had any issues until today. I really trusted this restaurant because of the variety of vegan options, but I was given 100% real chicken instead of the mock chicken I had ordered. After nearly finishing the meal I called the restaurant because I suspected it wasn't vegan-- turns out it wasn't. This was my first time eating meat in over 5 years and it really ruined my day. I have no appetite and just want to cry. They handled it nicely and offered a free item on my next order but I don't trust this place anymore. I feel bad writing a bad review during a pandemic but this restaurant really needs to get it together... If a vegan order comes through, you need better measures in place to ensure that you don't serve real meat on accident. It's really messed up. read more

The atmosphere here leaves a little bit to be desired, especially during daylight. Maybe it would feel less dingy in the dark. I came here for lunch with Laura M. We started off with the chicken lettuce wraps. They were really delicious. They came out pretty quickly and tasted fresh. My sister got the GI Joe which was really good and so was my avocado tuna roll. I ordered miso soup but it never came. Service was a little lacking. At the end they bring you a tablet to pay which is weird because they hold it the whole time and it's not itemized. Wow. Sticky Rice has gone down hill. This used to be my favorite sushi place in the city, but I hadn't been back for several years and oh boy has it become bad. First off, the cocktail list is trendy for 2004. Most things end in "-tini" and the two we tried were sickly sweet despite not listing any sweet ingredients. Literally the worst cocktails I can remember paying money for in the past decade. The sushi has also really declined. Sticky Rice used to do an amazing job with their giant tempura fried rolls full of awesome flavors. Today, the rice was overcooked, the fillings were dry, and the only actual flavor came from the spicy mayo drizzled liberally over the top. Had I randomly wandered into this place with no previous expectations, I would have been moderately disappointed. Came in with my squad of ladies on a random ass Monday night. Shut up we are nurses. Your Monday could be our Friday you don't know... so we came at like 1030 and were told they were closing at 11. First time trying this place and I would definitely go back! There was just one slightly negative thing, which I'll get out of the way first. One of the rolls I ordered was supposed to be the spicy avocado, which looked much different on yelp than it did when it arrived, which is why I think I got a different roll than what was ordered. As you can tell from the picture, it appeared the "spicy ave roll" (top roll) was actually some sort of spicy tuna with cucumber. That being said, it was still pretty good- although I probably would not order it again. Now, for the best part- the Philly roll and noodles were absolutely to die for. This Philly roll- let me tell you've, I've eaten A LOT of sushi, from California to South Korea- was the best I've ever had. The smoked salmon was the freshest, and the cream cheese was just the perfect amount. It was very obvious the roll had just been made which added to the freshness and overall high quality of the roll. Cannot stress this enough- YOU. MUST. ORDER. THE PHILLY. ROLL. IF. YOU. KNOW. WHAT'S. GOOD. FOR. YOU. Seriously, this thing can save a life. The noodles were also amazing. I've never had udon noodle so I don't have anything to compare it to, but these were so fresh and the flavor balance was exquisite. I was really excited to visit this place, friends have been telling me good things about it. When I arrived at Sticky Rice, I opened the door. As I was about to walk in, someone in the street randomly approached me and said something. A few moments later, the host from inside the restaurant comes to the door and says somewhat annoyed, "Are you coming in?" The food: Tots were terrific - well fried tots never ever fail. The Mongolian Beef, however, was disappointing. I was hoping for garlicky and a tad sweet. What was served were soggy vegetables and dry beef tossed with soy sauce and chili flakes. Gosh even my Coca-Cola was bland, as though the syrup were running low. I'm guessing the casual presentation of the food is meant to match the casualness of the ambience? Ambience is very informal. Servers wear whatever they like. Lighting is dim, music is medium loud and the playlist is whatever, the place has an old look with some art and stickers on the walls. The crowd last night was a noisy bunch. Sticky Rice seems like a fine place to sit down and have drinks and small bites with friends, but certainly not a place to impress a date. I came here because toki underground is too packed. However, I am always in the mood for sushi so me my sister and friends decided on this place that's close by. When you first walk in, you already know you would not get authentic sushi but we still give it a shot. Me and my sister shared a Mongolian noodle bowl with udon, and also an order or dirty south roll and crunch shrimps maki roll. The sushi here was very very disappointed especially being in DC. I really expect good quality sushi, the sushi here might be the most disappointing one I've tried so far. The noodle bowl is also below average. The udon is not cool well. The tots however, are very good though. I normally don't give one or two stars for restaurants unless both customer service and food are bad. The waitress messed up our order, so instead of giving us two rolls, she gave us double of each roll. It is our first time there, we were surprised how many rolls they gave us. Until the bill came, we were trying to share our sushi and stuff ourselves to finish them. She told us that we should not have eaten those sushi if we didn't order that much. I've heard about Sticky Rice from a friend who visited the Richmond location. And as chance would have it I was starving on Friday night with no dinner reservations. Making a reservation for that night was super easy. Once we arrived we were seated immediately and had a chance to dive into their massive menu. While I didn't have any of their drinks, their beer, wine and cocktail selection was massive. Our waitress (can't remember her name ) was awesome and suggested their tater tots and their poke specials. We needed up ordering the edamame, which was seasoned to perfection, Tater tots, best in D.C., the Godrizza Roll, massive great for sharing, my friend got the Sashimi Combo, which she raved about and I settled on then Lomi Lomi poke bowl, which I loved but could have used a sauce. Also, the manager was incredibly helpful in correcting a mistake I'd made in placing the order, when I accidentally ordered pick-up instead of delivery. He got it all sorted out for me, and the food arrived at the theater a mere hour after ordering. Very customer-focused restaurant with a wide menu of well-prepared food at a reasonable price. I've seriously been dreaming of the potstickers I had here a little over a week ago! The filling and toppings were so flavorful! The DJ was amazing! The great Saturday night soundtrack coupled with those pot stickers, a tuna poke bowl, and a glass of Riesling was a great way to end a long Saturday of being out and about. (I did have to add some soy sauce that came with the potstickers to the poke bowl to get a little more flavor out of he dish though. Otherwise, it was a great light meal.) Every time I've been to this restaurant I've enjoyed it. I typically get one of their poke bowls, all of their bowls are about $10 which is a great price for DC. My favorite is the Lomi Lomi. I tried the Tako Salad bowl recently and it was a bit too acidic for my tastes. The venue has a bar downstairs, an upstairs, and a patio. I typically eat at the downstairs bar. If you're looking for a nice casual date spot, this is a great place to go and their happy hour deal includes $4 wine and rails. A nearby server dropped and shattered a cup and the same bartender started to holler and laugh. I ordered the lettuce wraps. I expected some minced chicken that is lightly seasoned with some soy and what not and some pieces of iceberg or butter lettuce. What I got was a hot bowl of water chestnut soup. Here is the menu description. Lettuce Wraps (v/o) 8 Your choice of tofu, chicken or shrimp stir fried with shiitake, water chestnuts and mixed vegetables. Chicken $2.50 Shrimp $3.5 I should have read the menu more carefully and requested no water chestnuts. As I HATE water chestnuts. But literally, this thing was like 90 percent water chestnuts. There is nothing I hate more than water chestnuts used as filler. Have you ever gotten chicken with cashews, only to open the container and find that 50 percent of the dish is water chestnuts? Who opens that Chinese container and is like "YAY, Waterchestnuts"! I'll answer that for you : Noone. Also, here's a thing. I'd rather less food than a giant bowl of the packing peanut of the food world. The other thing about this was that it had like 2 inches of broth from the stirfry in the bottom of the bowl. The cuts for the entire dish were chunky. I'm talking about 1/2 inch pieces of chicken and giant rounds of water chestnuts. How are you supposed to put this wet chunky hot mess full of water chestnuts in a piece of lettuce. Also, with lettuce wraps, I've seen iceberg or butter lettuce commonly used because of it's "Cup-ability" **gonna have to trademark that word right now**. They used .. what I think to be... pieces of romaine. Low "Cup-ability" #Trademark The whole bowl of jazz, it was like the chef was saying. "I dare you to try and put this in a lettuce wrap". Well, I took your dare... and it sucked. When I ate one of my chestnut wraps, the amount of hot water that hit the plate was akin to the Deep water horizon spill. I'm sure I'll now be known as "that guy who hates water chestnuts".. and thats fine with me. I take that as the highest of compliments. In all reality, I would try Sticky rice one more time and try some of their sushi. But, the clunkiness on the lettuce wrap dish was unimpressive to say the least. read more

When I really think about junk food that looks like food, this is one of my top choices in the DC metro area. The food is so good, but if you are regularly ordering a Bucket of Tots with the fat-based dipping sauce.... ummm... you know that the healthfulness is about zero... With that said, I love tater tots and the dipping sauce- you can ask for vegan dipping sauce! A slightly spicy mayonnaise-like cream sauce that is a mix between aioli and frites sauce. Yum. The stars here are because of the unique dedication to marking the menu with V, VE, V/O and G/F (along with ** for sushi). It makes eating with specific dietary restrictions super easy. I also love the variety of food choices from sushi to tater tots to rice bowls. What else is good? I've been here so many times, I feel as though I have tried just about everything that I could want to try. The edamame is good - classic. The salads are also good - the teriyaki salad is a fabulous assortment of veggies, the spinach salad is a focus on veggies with some spinach (lime wasabi dressing is KILLER awesome), and the seaweed salad is as expected, tasty if you don't mind that texture (I heart it). The appetizers... who really wants lettuce wraps when you can have tots? Ok, get both. They are pretty tasty. The tempura vegetables though.... WHOA, that's a whole new level of "food that looks like it should be good for you but is not" because of the deep fried tempura batter. So good! Chunks of fresh veggies fried beautifully - oh so good, I want more NOW. Those are the best veg appetizers. The food entrees that rock are any sushi order, really. The noodles/ sticky rice bowls are alright, but they're not too exciting by my standards. The portions are pretty generous, with a focus on protein (i.e. deep fried tofu) followed by carbs (love the thin rice noodles) and a dusting of veggies. So, that's probably why I'm not the biggest fan. Plus, the food tends to be too salty and sweet in the bowls for my taste. The sushi - oh yum. Usually you can only have kappa maki, avocado or some iterations thereof with, if you're lucky, asparagus, spinach and sometimes mushrooms. The choices here are stellar for veg sushi (oxymoron?) aficionados. Here, it's all good and fat, though - you have your choice of peanuts added in, vegan mayo (or reg), tempura crunches. They have inari (tofu/soy) pockets filled with rice and a smattering of red peppers and cilantro, finished with a drizzle of eel sauce. My other two fav not-good-for-you items are the tempura avocado and tempura sweet potato. So good! I like to order one of each, but it can be overwhelming - so bring a friend or two and order them all for sharing. This place is incredibly popular, so be ready to wait or come at odd times. The veg food is always fresh, piping hot (if cooked) and filling - the healthfulness is to be ignored if you don't want to hate yourself! So good! I am always happy when I accept that I am not eating for nutrition but for guilty pleasure of this so-not-healthful food filled with deep fried everything and high sodium and carbs (rice rice rice potato potato)! read more
