Just came back from a delicious and delightful meal at the Stissing House. The place is an old tavern/inn with styling from old colonial style. A lot of wood and multiple rooms for additional seatings and a big seating area with fireplace to lounge around before or after the meal. The service was friendly. Barbara was our waitress and she was friendly and very helpful with suggestions on the choices from drinks to appetizer and entree. All were good suggestions. Her information on the dessert choice was perfect. The kitchen is open and spacious. Having gone to chef training school, a spacious open kitchen makes for happy chefs and cooks which goes to good food and dishes. We had the potato chips and ham( fresh ham) which were house made. Mustard with the ham was en pointe! The bread and butter was great. I had a cocktail called Strawberry Blonde- so refreshing - perfect summer drink. My brother had a wine called Orange. Very light and refreshing. We shared a Big Green Salad- yup that's what it was and tossed with a light vinaigrette. . My entree was baked trout in a bed of summery peas and other greens. Very light and had some crispy edges from the wood fire. My brother had the chicken that was moist and tender. The last but not least was the dessert of coconut cake ( slathered with whip cream) and the wood fired custard - topped with cream). Those two go together in one bite combo. DE BEST!!! Well, someone dear to me hosted a candle light by quilting class at the Stissing House in Pine Plains, NY, which was a huge success. The Stissinge House itself is an amazing spot with lots of history. In addition to having beautiful event space, the Stissing House also hosts a restaurant that can conjure up some delicious dishes. The Meat Pie with a Summer salad was deeelicious, it was wll seasoned, portions were just right and it smelled like something one would really want to eat. There were also the drinks, I actually forgot the name, but it tasted great. I've attached a photo. The ambiance is amazing and sets the atmosphere, which is relaxing and coupled with the candle lit atmosphere, producing an almost surreal look. The staff were friendly and checked in with me while I was assisting with the events. I did not have a chance to sample all of the Stissing House's offerings, but I can guarantee zI am going back to fulfill my culinary cravings.. read more

This restaurant is very expensive including the desserts, but worth every penny. All the food was delicious as well as unique. Every dish was special especially the scallops in garlic butter and the roast chicken with roasted potatoes. My favorite dessert was the hot fudge sundae made with homemade ice cream over a home baked brownie. The service was superb and the restaurant is warm and cozy. We will be back! read more

This old inn has been turned into the warmest dining room imaginable. With candles burning and a palpable 19th century ambiance, you're almost a little surprised to see the chef's imaginative takes on some classics - the roasted chicken, the stew, the salmon, the asparagus with hollandaise. We were escorted to our table by a member of the wait staff who was obviously very experienced and familiar with the offerings of the establishment . The food is very well prepared although the menu is very limited with only a couple of available choices for the main course. The restaurant itself has a very intimate ,19th century , atmosphere . The food and the service are both excellent. I dined at the restaurant with friends June 10 to celebrate a birthday. after a wonderful dinner it was time for dessert. The server recommended the strawberry cobbler and said it was big enough to share. She neglected to mention the price $34.00 ; which was more than our dinner. I think when mentioning a special dessert the customer should be made aware of the price , especially when it is exorbitant . So buyer beware, ask before buying especially since it is not mentioned when offered. read more

Incredible atmosphere, but the food was not quite as good as it could have been. Yes, the beets were amazing and the spices were very good - the presentation was perfect, but there was something missing - a touch of citrus? A nicely aged vinegar. If you go, you might want to ask for something on the side. The dish, while good, could be so much better. For the main course, I ordered a wood fired halibut which was served with some small bits of roasted root vegetables and fresh herbs with a lovely dressing - here the issue was the cooking. Three people at my table ordered the halibut and said it was over cooked. Very disappointing. Finally, sticky toffee Sundae. I have had this dessert, perhaps, too many times and it requires the base to be hot - it wasn't the flavors were spot on, but...despite all of that we had a lovely time and loved having a fire place adjacent to our table. What a delight. We really enjoyed our visit. The space is beautiful, historic, cozy and decorated with special touches everywhere, from a gorgeous floral arrangements with massive dahlias to a big bowl of peanuts in a sitting room to a luscious heap of whipped butter under a glass dome ready for bread service. There was a wood fire crackling in the open kitchen and a massive coconut cake on the counter casually topped with mounds of fluffy icing. Simple beauty everywhere. We were warmly greeted by the host and brought to our table right away. Our server was professional and friendly and we were comfortable and well cared for throughout the evening. We had oysters and chips to start which were just perfect. The homemade chips were perfectly crisp with just the right amount of salt & vinegar. We shared a Summer salad with heirloom tomatoes, peaches and a scoop of soft, local goat cheese which was perfect for early September when we visited. For entrees we shared the Mahi Mahi w fennel and the heritage pork chop which was beautifully charred over the wood fire and served with Wild Hive Farm grits and greens. Both were delicious. We finished with a plum crisp for two with sour cream ice cream which was lovely. The bar looked super cozy, comfortable and welcoming. There were a few rooms that could be reserved for private parties. We'd definitely come back here again and feel like it's a place we'd like to take visiting guests as well. Very special. read more

Good but not great food. Great atmosphere. They did a nice job renovating. Good service. Small portions and it's really overpriced. For example 95 dollars for a 15 ounce run of the mill steak (not special like Wagyu etc). The old chef who opened a new business had much better food. The cocktail list is decent. I'd avoid this restaurant. Food is good but very expensive for Pine Plains which is fine but they consistently fail on service. Been there 3 times once when it was uncrowded and service was fine, once early and the service was ok but not great and once on a busy night and waited for 2 hours for our entree. Worse, the staffs opinion seemed to be it was our privilege to be there so just wait and it will ready when it's ready. Much better options nearby. read more

I love everything about the space -- a very beautiful, comforting dining experience. Unfortunately, food was average and even understanding the focus on seasonal menus and minimalism, it's surprising how so many of the dishes really didn't take advantage of the simplicity of ingredients to amplify individual flavors (and more than a few were over-salted). I gave three stars because would like to try again, and wonder if some of the changing menu makes certain dishes hit or miss just because a lack of depth in cooking with the ingredients. read more

The food is very good but frankly you can get equally good food at an other place at a lower cost. Putting aside the price to real value issue, my mediocre review is driven by the terrible service experience. It took forever for the waitstaff to take our drinks order then the person was gone for another 20 minutes! Everything was terribly slow. At one point, my sister, who had a child at home, had to ask to have her food as takeout, because it took so long. We will not go back - just too many other good options. I had two good courses here. But, I've never paid so much for a weak martini, they have no name brands, and served in a wine glass (perhaps 1/4 inch full). The bartender was nice, but I'd advise you to drink before arriving. I am also offended when a restaurant doesn't give you change when paying cash. In this case it was 70 cents, which they assumed I didn't want, or wouldn't notice that they were "rounding" in their favor, not mine. The newly renovated space is fresh and great. Love that this spot is back and up and running. We had a lovely waitress and good service altho slow. The food was uneven. And way TOO SALTY! Even the oysters were barely edible they were so salty. The chicken. And the trout both covered in so much salt it was all you tasted. The desserts were delicious. The food was mediocre at best. An hors d'oeuvre of 3 scallops for $48? For the main course I had the lamb shoulder which was so overcooked I could barely cut the meat off the bone. Ambiance was so so, but its was so noisy we couldn't hear each other talk. And the price was absurdly expensive. I woudn't recommend Stissing House to anyone. This redesigned colonial tavern/restaurant turned from a bed and breakfast was overall a lovely experience. The food/drinks (not so big of a menu but it may have helped the care that goes into the cooking since the food was delicious- hats off to the chef) and atmosphere (if you enjoy colonial themes and vibes as much as you may enjoy day dreaming about living in that era) was great. My family went to the Stissing House last night and we were extremely disappointed. The nettle soup was good but lukewarm, the endive pear salad was a plate of white food (very unattractive) and my mom was searching for some pears and her dressing was so water-downed she could not taste it. My husband's lentil, egg and bacon salad was a plate of lettuce, with NO EGG, and about a teaspoon of lentils and no bacon in site. My dad's appetizer were 2 scallops and they were put in a shell (?). My trout was served with 4 fava beans and 5 stalks of asparagus with the fish served skin side up so I could not event put my fork through it. The gingerbread cake was so dense and dry it was inedible and unattractive to look at. I have never written a food review on Yelp but we just spent hundreds of dollars for a very, very mediocre meal. read more

Sissing House was really really good. Expensive, wonderful service, wonderful food. A plaster and wood interior, rustic country with white tablecloths and paper tops ala italian restaurant. A little noisy for my taste, but well spaced tables which were busy - people were still coming for dinner at 8:40 pm as we left. The food was exceptional; reasonable portions - not huge and not micro. We had fish and chicken, appetizers, entree and dessert for 2 which ran about $120 + tax and tip. Well worth it. We will go back. An hour and 10 minutes approx from Albany via I90, the Taconic, and a back road. read more

The most amazing dinner we've had in a while, lovely place with a seasoned and knowledgable staff! Set in a beautiful "grand Victorian home" with an "open kitchen" ...the chef outdid herself with the menu options, the artichoke appetizer was fresh and amazing followed by a trout which was impeccably prepared, the wine options to pair with the dinner were 5 star! The scallops appetizer and venison tartar were the standouts of the night but most of the other things we ordered were just fair to good. Grew up in the area and decided to make the trip back for lunch during Hudson Valley Restaurant Week. First, I have to say that I love the historic building. Wide plank wood floors, old local landscape paintings adorning the walls and large and small dining areas situated in different nooks and crannies of the space - the bar, a room with a fireplace and black leather banquettes, even separate rooms with tables for groups. Candlelit and cozy, so I loved the ambiance. We sat in the room with the fireplace and my only complaint was that the banquettes are a bit worn and need to be recovered, and I sank deeply and awkwardly into my seat, so perhaps a bit of reinforcement is needed. The service was a bit spotty as well. Friendly, but haphazard. Our waitress was a CIA student, so I was surprised to hear her struggle to explain 'farro' on the menu or answer another diner's question about whether or not the soup was pureed (it was). Reasonably priced wine list, with many local selections. But, the food and the menu deserve 5 stars and that's the main reason we would go back. For apps we enjoyed spring pea and ham soup and a blood orange and mesclun salad - I don't know what they did to the blood oranges, but they were fantastic - almost tasted like sundried tomatoes! Entrees were farro risotto with butternut squash, mushrooms, sage and parmesan and thai curry coconut lime mussels. Both outstanding. The largest, most succulent, plump mussels I've ever eaten. The broth was so flavorful, we finished every drop. Dessert was a partially fallen chocolate souffle with fresh whipped cream and a bread pudding in a caramel bourbon sauce. Both heavenly. Couldn't decide which one we liked more. Portion sizes were perfect - just enough. We'll be back - I just wish it wasn't so far away! read more
