We had a group of six drop in around 1 pm, and since it was packed, we waited about 15 minutes to be seated. Thankfully, the staff let five of us sit and start ordering while we waited for the sixth person to arrive, which I really appreciated. If you're coming with a group, I'd recommend having a few people arrive early so you can get in line while everyone else catches up, especially if someone is running behind. Our server came by quickly to check if we were ready to order, and the food came out fast despite how busy it was. Every meal was done correctly, and they were great about accommodating food restrictions. I ordered the vegan burger, and it was delicious and truly unique. I've never seen anything like it at another restaurant. Additionally, I enjoyed how they were already decorated for Valentine's Day. Maybe a little early but still nice. Grand Canyon is a local neighborhood institution that can easily be passed over but once you make your first visit, it becomes an unbreakable habit. The vibe is that of a Mexican American diner, and the clientele are all clearly Brooklyn heights locals - some of which have clearly been coming here for decades. It is clearly a IYKYK spot. The menu is huge - pretty much anything you can want from a diner is on it, including a full bar. Also, the service is incredibly helpful and friendly. Even if you don't see something on the menu you can likely order it (within reason). On our first visit, we ordered the carbonara and we were hooked. How can this little spot we skipped over so many times give us such great food? Have we been missing out this whole time? From this first visit, we've ended up coming in many times during all times of day whether that was a late night dinner or hungover breakfast, Grand Canyon just hits the spot. It is not your fanciest meal, but it is comfort personified. While the carbonara is what made me fall in love with Grand Canyon (perfectly creamy and non-skimping on the crunchy bits of bacon), I've also yet to find a pulled pork sandwich as good as the one Grand Canyon puts together. This place has a large menu similar to a diner but with some mexican specialties which is cool. I got the grand canyon sandwich and my husband got the huevos mexicana. Also got lattes. Unsure why it took so long for me to review this place as I've been here a bunch. This is a long-running old school diner with a large menu. They particularly focus on their burgers here with the old menu having a a lot of Mexican options along with the standard diner fare with a recent addition being a separate extra Mexican food list. The waitstaff is nice and they do separate checks even for large parties as long as you call which is very nice which is one of the reasons why I've been here a bunch as one of the groups I go to likes to get individual checks when they can. I've been here before for breakfast a few times. The breakfast special is good here with your choice of eggs in whatever style which comes with your choice of toast which is buttered unless you tell them otherwise and a choice of a bunch of things such as their pretty tasty home fries. They have solid omelettes and they're open at 7:00 which is definitely a plus in this area. The price is a bit high but hey it's Brooklyn Heights and it's not that much more expensive than the local corner stores in the area if you want a good sized breakfast. As noted, they're mostly well known for their burgers and they advertise them outside and such. The burgers are half a pound and are quite juicy. The fries are pretty standard and I wish they gave more coleslaw but it's a diner so some of this is to be expected and the burgers are a whole lot better than the vast majority of other diners. I've also tried a bit of one of their grilled chicken sandwiches from someone else which was excellent and I think I might have tried one other thing here from the Mexican menu which was fine but I don't remember what it was. This isn't a place that you'd travel to but it's one of those type of spots that's just needed and excellent to have around. They're not trying to be the best but the food is still tasty and the portions are reasonable. It's probably closer to a 4 but I've been here way too many times and my little review does nothing to help or hurt this spot. read more

It's been some time since I visited Grand Canyon restaurant. I decided to take my two favorite little girls for breakfast, but the 17 wanted a burger, which made me remember what I always liked about Grand Canyon, restaurant... Burgers! The six month old had guacamole... Ha ha ha! The baby loves her fruit and vegetables and has a great appetite and will possibly be a future Yelper, because she has a great appetite and really appreciated the guacamole... she was humming and eating LOL. My bleu burger was on point. It was Big, juicy flavorful and filling. I cut it in half because I could only eat half. The 17-year-old girl was not pleased that her burger was medium well. She likes a well done burger, but her fries disappeared almost immediately, and like most weird teenagers she ate all around the sides of her burger and left the middle. It was not crowded when we arrived but began to get busy as families arrived with their children for dinner. As it picked up, the noise level increased in sequence. The margaritas were so tasty and hit the spot. We had a combo plate which was basic with mozzarella, chicken fingers, etc. I wish there was a combination platter for the Mexican food. We were seated immediately inside and were tucked in the back in our own corner. The menu at Grand Canyon is like a big book. I was in the mood for a classic blt and went straight to the sandwich section. My friends got a variety of other things - silver dollar pancakes, croissant breakfast sandwich, potato skins. I got my blt with chipotle Mayo, and it came with a massive amount of fries and a couple onion rings. Next time I need to give their breakfast menu a try - their omelettes and scrambles look amazing. What a beautiful welcome we were given by Victor, even though we were a little late for our reservation. He was so kind and made us feel like old customers. He was delighted that we chose his restaurant to have breakfast. It was so nice to see the restaurant decorated for Valentine's Day. Even on this rainy day, it made us feel happy. We loved the front window decorations of Minnie and Mickey Mouse. We were immediately seated and asked if we would like coffee. The coffee was so fresh and delicious, my husband and I had 3 cups each! Cesar, our server, was very friendly and attentive to our every need. They have an extensive menu. My husband ordered pancakes with a side of bacon. The 3 pancakes were big and fluffy - the bacon crisp and delicious. His meal came with orange juice and coffee. I had the Super Healthy Breakfast Wrap. It was 2 egg whites, turkey bacon, tomato, avocado, Swiss cheese and spinach leaves on a whole wheat wrap. Open windows in the front that make the restaurant very welcoming. The restaurant is small but it does not feel cramped like a Manhattan restaurant. We were greeted right away and had a server over to offer us our beverages. The menu is HUGE. So many options. I ordered the Island Omelette and the BF got the usual corned beef hash and eggs. Both of our breakfasts came out quickly and were steaming hot. The potatoes on the side were so delicious--homemade, not frozen. Everything was well-seasoned. The portions were huge and neither of us finished our plates. You could tell the restaurant had a lot of regulars in it. The servers and the guests knew each other by name. My first and last time coming here. The food was alright, however the service was absolutely terrible. I watched 3 other tables get sat and received their food before I did. Our order was taken at 12:30 and we received our food at 1:00 (nachos + cheeseburger/fries.) I saw my waiter only 3 times: when he sat us, when he briefly stopped tending to other tables to tell us the food was almost ready, and when he picked up the check. Another waiter had come by our table to ask if we had ordered yet. I replied yes, half an hour prior. As I was waiting and had lots of time to waste I was looking around other customers to see how their service was going. These 3 tables beside me were attended to, received their checks when asked, and most were able to leave before I did. When finished I had tried flagging down our waiter and other waiters, when my attempts were unsuccessful I went up to the front to ask for the check and was promptly told to wait by yet another waiter. I sat back down for 10 minutes visibly upset and only got my check when yet another waiter stopped to clean the table. This same waiter asked me why I simply hadn't just walked up to the front and asked for it. When I told him I did, and was told to wait even longer, he just kinda shrugged and went sorry. We had finished eating for 30 minutes at this point. We sat down for a quick lunch before afternoon plans but had spent over an hour mostly waiting on food and service. I want to believe that it had nothing to do with my disabled friend I was dining with this afternoon, but after looking at all the other tables and from what I had seen it was the only difference. read more

I ordered the steak tacos while my friends had the Hawaiian and Mexican burger. The tacos were very good and topped with a nice combo of cilantro, onions, and guacamole. I tried a bit of the Hawaiian burger and the meat was fresh and above average when comparing to most diners. The atmosphere is quite nice inside, although the booths could use a little more leg room. Service was friendly but slow, it's the type of restaurant where you need to flag someone down every time you need something. I've been to this place many times and never had any issues. That changed today I had two eggs over medium , bacon , home fries and rye toast. It was a dead fly in my home fries. The manger was making up so many stories. First it was an onion then it was part of the potato then he said it was burnt grease from the grill. He tried to justify what it really was. Things happens I get it but I would have appreciated an apology instead of trying to cover it up. Sadly I will not be returning here to eat anything else from Grand Canyon. Having walked past this spot countless times without knowing exactly what happens inside, my dining partner and I thought we'd give Grand Canyon a shot due to some questionable recent performances by the other diner across the street. It turned out to be a very good decision. The interior is rustic, befitting the name, and somehow festive without being gaudy. The menu is typically extensive, with several Mexican dishes on offer to augment the more traditional fare, and while that drew us in, we opted for boring things that weren't boring at all. Here, I had the best burger I've enjoyed in recent memory, topped with Swiss cheese, mushrooms, red onion, and mayo. The rolls they use are absolutely perfect for their job, beautiful in appearance, and frankly, a little weird. They're dark like pretzel buns, seeded with sesame, yellowish on the inside like potato rolls, and sturdy enough to keep everything together from start to finish. I wasn't asked what temp I preferred, so it was served medium, but that turned out to be just fine. Perhaps it would have come apart more easily had I been offered a choice and asked for medium rare. The accompanying potato wedges were crispy on the outside, and soft within. In retrospect, I can't imagine changing a thing. Significant Other ordered a crab cake Benedict with chipotle sauce, and this too was very well executed. The body of the egg whites were perfectly round, the yolks were runny, and the crab cakes seemed obviously house made because they were different sizes. I stole a bite of this, and with more crab than binder, it was agreed that the dish was a success. The accompanying home fries contain peppers and onions, with is usually not the case in most places, but in my opinion, much preferred. The coffee was nice and strong, and though my vanilla egg cream wasn't the best, it was far from the worst. From the attentive lunch time service to the quality of the food, I found almost nothing to criticize. The boards atop the wainscoting could use a wipe, but that aside, there is no question of repeat business. Grand Canyon did not in any way disappoint. read more

The food is always excellent, the service is always amazing, and it extremely well run by Cesar and Victor (both of whom are extremely friendly as well). As a long-time resident of Brooklyn Heights, I was well aware of the existence of this diner-ish restaurant. It's been here as long as I have been here, and had closed and reopened recently. It's nothing hip or fancy, and absolutely nothing about it (including its old timey sign) really beckons you to come inside. But the recent reviews of this place caught my eye. Yelpers specifically pointed out its supposedly decent Mexican offerings. Sufficiently intrigued, I dragged bf here on a recent snowy evening, in search for pork pozole. Yes, THAT hominy stew that I can only find in remote corners of Queens, Brooklyn, or in Mexico. Bf ordered chicken enchiladas with red mole. The pozole was surprisingly good. It was served with garnishes of chopped iceberg lettuce, diced radishes, fried tortillas and a wedge of lime. I had a bite of bf's mole enchiladas - which the gentleman manning the front of the house, explained was actually procured from Mexico. While it was not the best mole I had eaten in my life (and for $22, definitely not the cheapest), it was probably the best mole dish I was going to find within such a short distance from my apartment. So after 20 years or so, of categorically dismissing this restaurant, I am now a fan, and plan to throw them into my brunch rotation (hello, chilaquilles!) from now on. read more
