Beautiful structure. Lovely, expansive grounds. Friendly, helpful staff. A clean, warm, swimmable and lovely beach is about a mile walk away-although you can take one of their bikes and bike there. They provide the beach bag, towels, blankets and chairs. The continental breakfast is fine-a cut above usual hotel fare-but the coffee is WEAK. There's good fresh fruit, hardboiled eggs, an assortment of pastries sweet and savory, cereal, yogurt, etc. Hot and very cold water are always available. We sat on the wrap-around farmer's porch a good deal, both from our room and at breakfast. Everything was clean and comfortable. The inn is beautiful. It's worth a climb down to the tap room/bar for its charm alone! Little Compton has a lot to offer, and we will probably come back, definitely staying at The Stone Inn. read more

I had the worst hotel experience of my life here, only to be compounded by the worst customer service imaginable. The hotel room was filthy and infested with ants. The comforter's underside had a huge spot that looked like vomit or feces, which we didn't notice until the next day. We spent the whole evening sleeping with that touching our bodies--the horror when I discovered it. To make matters worse, the manager, Theresa, insists that it must have been vomit from ourselves and/or our service dog. That was 100% not the case as the dog was never unattended. Furthermore, instead of comping the room, Theresa said she should charge us for the damage! Go there at your own risk...I imagine they'll be out of business soon. read more

The pictures of the junior king suite on booking.com, yelp and Facebook don't accurately depict what I ended up with. I took some side by sides so that people can make a decision to book based off of the pictures I took next to what is advertised. The place was clean but not at all what I was expecting. We booked a Junior king suite because I wanted a vacation that closely resembled what was in the pictures. It was not. The floors were carpeted and sloped. Ceilings were low. The air conditioner was not working. Fridge was not cold. Water pressure in bath was low. The beach was not directly on the property. You had to walk a bit. *Google earth it before coming to see the distance. I did not complain to management. We made the best of it. read more

My husband and I were looking for a fall get away. What a great find! Nick was so responsive when we were booking and answered any questions we had! Our room was absolutely perfect! We stayed in the Plover in the renovated barn and it was just what we needed. Very nice, clean, spacious. Had a little kitchenette, living room area with tv and balcony, very comfortable king sized bed and beautiful bathroom with soaking tub. We loved the outdoor space for relaxing with a glass of wine and afternoon snack that they provided, or for breakfast also provided or even while by the fire pit at night. So many great restaurants near by and eventhough Newport is about 50mins away it was still a quick drive over. We will DEFINITELY be back and have recommended it to so many friends. Beautiful, quaint sea-side resort brimming with New England charm. Stayed in the Plover Room in The Wood Barn. The Wood Barn looks like a barn on the outside, but inside the stairwell and hallway has an industrial and sterile feel. A bit odd that the décor doesn't match up, but fine since the room itself was tranquil and comfortable. King bed. Gas fireplace. Kitchen area. Huge bathroom with a rain shower and Japanese deep soaking tub--amazing! Just heads up, it's deep but a square tub, so no sprawling out in this, but what a soak! Balcony, but not much of a view with an event tent (wedding) set up on the lawn below. Head up for summer visitors, there is a window air conditioner and it was very loud. Complimentarily breakfast in the Stone House from 7:30am-9:30am: muffins, pastries, dry cereal, fresh fruit, tea/coffee/juice. Baked goods from nearby bakeries. Did not dine at the Taproom. Went into Tiverton and Newport for lunch/dinner. Absolutely beautiful surrounding area. Very rural but some cool things to do nearby: Vineyard and Tiverton Main Street with a few shops, art galleries, yoga studios and places to eat about 10-15 minutes away. Newport is a good 45 minutes away depending on traffic. Staff here is friendly and accommodating. Everyone was happy to help and we felt very welcomed and comfortable. I loved staying here. I got married here a looong time ago and, for years and years, we would come back and stay for a week in the summer. As our family grew, it became more economical to rent and then eventually - as life transpires - I divorced and we stopped coming to Little Compton for a few years. But Little Compton has always been one of my favorite places on earth. Growing up in RI, I spent a lot of time here before my marriage. I know a lot of people who live here - in the summer and also year-round. This summer I brought my kids back. We rented over on the Point and I was hoping to take my kids to the tap room for dinner. I stopped by with one of my daughters to check out the inn (under new ownership) and inquire about dining. I was surprised to hear that the town - in a petty move - had "re-zoned" the parking to only allow for 15 cars at a time, effectively eliminating the Club's ability to do anything but run itself as an inn. No weddings, no dining. Honestly, people, can't we all get along? I realize that as New Englanders we all hate change. We grasp onto the past, hoping things will remain the same as they always have. And, yes, this is a magical place where time does seem to stand still. The Stonehouse Club has been a fixture in this town for centuries and I know many of you in this town have enjoyed a dinner or two at the historic taproom, have attended a wedding or two in the barn and perhaps even toasted a special occasion and dined out at the restaurant which served meals when weddings were not taking place. The new ownership recognizes how important it is to keep a place like this running. It's not easy to run a business under any circumstances. And hospitality has to be one of the most difficult businesses to run. So I implore whomever will listen, to open your minds the tiniest bit and allow The Club the parking spaces they need to run their business. It will benefit us all in the end. read more

This was literally the best customer service experience of our lives. We had a wonderful stay at the stone house. We stayed for 3 days. It was an unexpected stay after an 'air B and B' disaster. There is complimentary continental breakfast and evening bites. Both delicious! The staff were out of this world. The Inn keeper spent time out of his day to throw the frisbee and play games with the kids on the lawn. Isobel called her contacts to get me out on the local private golf course. She also called the public courses in Newport and got me a tee time there too. I didn't ask her to do this but she knew our 'air B and B' host had cancelled my golf at short notice. She was exceptional at her job and very proactive and motivated. She went out of her way to help my mum, wife and children daily. The chamber maid, made scrambled eggs for our baby, before her work shift started, as he wasn't feeling well and she does this for her kids. She did a great job on the room also. The night time receptionist showed a lot of empathy on checkin after our bad experience in the private house and went out of his way to make life easy for us. He set up the pack and play even though I told him I've done it hundreds of times before. We stayed in 'Henry',which was two rooms adjoining, so we could be next to my mum and she could help watch the kids. The bath tub in Henry B was wonderful. The rooms were so nice. He felt incredibly comfortable there and had so much space. I literally can't say enough great things about this place. This was a 10/10 perfect stay. We loved everything about this place. Private beach down the road is stunning. Angela's drive in restaurant was 3 miles away. Doesn't look like much but best lobster roll I've ever had. read more

Loved our stay at the Stonehouse1854! It was my first time back to New England in years. I get tired of the hustle and bustle of the city and really long for that slower pace in the country...yet a place close enough to enjoy the area. I had heard about Little Compton in the past and encouraged my spouse to try it and the local winery, cigar and cheese store. We came to this waterside location prior to a wedding weekend to relax prior to all the festivities! It was wonderful. We stayed in the Berry Suite - complete with soaking tub in the center of the bathroom with incredible mood lighting. The room was spacious with windows facing out to the water. The location was on the top floor with a shared balcony. Beach chairs and a fire pit were available. A good breakfast variety was available in the mornings. Check in and check out was smooth - with lovely art and information to look at. There is a spa on-site and had we been there for more than a couple nights - we would have added this to our itinerary.Honestly, we were not fond of the restaurant or it's service but it's one of a handful of dining spots in town. The wi-fi service was also spotty - great if your don't care. Parking was convenient there are many small cozy places to visit in town. Ex. ice cream shops, fruit stands, etc. A must visit was Sakonnet Vineyards! read more

1854 is a great restaurant and worth driving to slightly-out-of-the-way Little Compton for. Situated in the cellar of the Stone House, a beautiful bed and breakfast situated in an old stone mansion, the entire experience is delightful. We made a reservation on a Fall Saturday evening (Stone House's other restaurant, called Pietra, is closed in the fall/winter), which turned out to be unnecessary, but better to play it safe. The restaurant is dimly lit and very cozy with a fireplace and candlelight. The above-table lighting is kind of obnoxious and we actually asked to move because of the glare, so ask for a table off to the side which is more pleasant. The menu offers a Continental assortment of salads and meat dishes, all of which are at which I consider to be a slightly high price point (especially this far out of the way), but I guess being in a luxury bed and breakfast is part of that. I had the Berkshire pork chop which came in a sweet glaze with red cabbage. It was pretty good and the servings were generous. Others I was with had the filet mignon and pasta dishes, and everyone seemed happy with what they ate. Dessert was really nice and we really enjoyed their version of a Baked Alaska. We drank cocktails (I had a dry martini) and those were well prepared and they do have a pretty creative drink menu for those who are interested. The server was friendly and informative as well. This is a great experience to combine with a visit to nearby Sakonnet Vineyards and make an afternoon/evening of it. If you're nearby or looking for something a bit more offbeat (than the typical Newport scene), this is a great choice for a casual but refined meal. read more

If you are planning a smaller wedding like we did (less than 50 people), Stonehouse simply cannot be beat for an intimate, and elegant wedding venue. Working with OceanCliff/Newport Experience, we rented out every single room for our guests for two days that covered our rehearsal and wedding day. This allowed us to visit with each and every one of our guests and really spend valuable time with family. We had our ceremony and reception hosted on the property, which for convenience cannot be compared and removes a tremendous amount of stress trying to travel from different sites on your wedding day. The customer service was amazing. Our inn keeper Corey along with his friendly staff was always available to answer questions, and take care of our every need. They serve a continental breakfast every morning. Have complimentary water bottles, tea, and coffee onsite. And also offer complimentary "small tastes" at night. The venue itself is absolutely stunning! It has a main building and a "barn" with plenty of space for each guest. Each room is unique, huge in size, with elegant and modern designs. The lawn in front of StoneHouse is gigantic. We were able to play a variety of lawn games with our guests which was a blast! There are also two semi-private beaches directly next to the property that we and our guests took full advantage of. It is a remote location that is very quiet, and safe, so you won't be disturbed on your special day. Plenty of parking on site for your guests. One drawback is that there is a noise ordinance. They do not allow amplified music to be played outdoors due to local restrictions. This was not a problem for us though. During our ceremony and cocktail hour, we were able to have string musicians play non-amplified music. And during our reception, we moved into the barn and our DJ was able to play amplified music since it was indoors. read more

We stayed on the top floor of the barn. The room was spacious and comfortable with a nice view. It lacked a dresser (which would have been good because we were there for a week), and the wi-fi was spotty and slow. It's too bad that the kitchen isn't working full-time anymore (and neither is the bar), but they offered a continental breakfast, and the complimentary hors d'oeuvres and wine in the evenings were welcome at the end of some busy days. The staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. They went out of their way to help us out with our five-year-old, and make our stay enjoyable. Came for dinner while in town to visit my husband's uncle at his beach house in Westport, MA. Uncle Carl knows all the cool spots and when he said he'd made reservations for dinner, I didn't need to ask questions because I knew wherever it was would would be excellent. The Stone House and the grounds are beautiful, and because of this I didn't expect the restaurant to be so dark and cozy based on the surroundings. Before walking into the Tap Room, you must first walk down a steep, narrow staircase, which would be very difficult for older guests or anyone requiring handicap access. They may have an elevator hidden somewhere, but I didn't inquire. Once we made our way into the restaurant it was so dark that it took a minute for my eyes to adjust, but when they did I was really impressed. The atmosphere was so intimate and the decor was elegant but understated. Nearly all of the tables were full, but the restaurant was still very quiet, and it looked as if everyone was enjoying their meal and intimate conversation. Our waitress was young and clumsy and she didn't have many recommendations for the menu, but she knew a surprising amount about the alcohol. I'm normally a red wine girl all the way, but since we had already uncorked a couple bottles back at the house in anticipation of our reservation, I opted for a dirty vodka martini (or three). It was fantastic! Just the right amount of olive juice and not too salty, and served with three olives for garnish. My husband and uncle had beer as they enjoy sampling the local drafts when available. The service was very slow, and our meal took about 2.5 hours, but since we were on vacation we didn't mind. Our appetizers were good, though I can't remember now what we had, and I enjoyed my entree (hangar steak with mashed potatoes and haricot verts) though I thought the entire dish lacked seasoning. A couple dashes of salt was able to cure it for the most part. The steak was served with a sweet sauce similar in taste and texture to applesauce, and I didn't care for it very much with the meat, but it had good flavor on its own. Although the price was on the high side and none of us were wowed by the food, I do plan on coming back here again this summer. The cool speakeasy vibe and relaxed setting were just too enjoyable not to give the Tap Room another chance. read more

This place is heaven on earth. The views and the are are so amazing. They just did a huge renovation and now everything this is very eco-friendly. The soaps in the room are organic and from a local company. The quilts on the beds are also from a local quilter. The rooms and suites have unique history and character but have the most up to date amentities. The concierge and parking services were fantastic. We met Paul, who was so nice and helpful. We didn't have a phone in our room and we let Paul know. When we got back from an hour walk, we had a phone. There are great spa treatments, european breakfasts with homemade granola (the best) and local foods used. The Pietra restaurant is amazing. Had lunch and dinner there and they were the best meals I have had ever, and I would consider myself a foodie. The 1854, the pub has good food but is a little pricey for the food. I recommend getting a variety of appetizers and drinks. Both restaurants use food from local businesses. They have lemonade, water and coffee all day in the main house with a variety of delicious canapes. There are great seats outside to enjoy the the views and weather. Also the Stone House has a private beach. They will set up a nice cart with nice beach chairs, towels and an umbrella. The private beach is a little rocky but there is a local beach just 3 more minutes away. This beach is not packed, even on the 4th of july weekend. The town of LIttle Compton is adorable and a stop at Wilbur's General Store is a must, even if its for a bag of chips. While the Stone House will make you boxed lunches, I recommend stopping at the little fruit stands to grab some fruits, veggies, cheese, meat and bread and take it to the beach. The suite we stayed in has a fridge which was nice to put our findings in the day before we went to the beach. It would have been nice to have biodegradeable plastic ware to take to the beach. This is something I wish was in the room. There is also a fantastic winery nearby. Stop to get a couple of bottles. We found all of this happen chance. There is a great map at the front desk with many of these places and a brochure for the winery. I recommend picking these up immediately. While Newport is only 30 to 45 minutes away, you will never want to leave Stone House. I recommend stopping there first and walking around and then going to the Stone House. I think that this place is perfect for romantic getaways and celebrations. People can bring their children but I would not recommend it. read more

I went in the dead of winter so the surroundings are as sad as the rest of New England. There is nothing to do in Little Compton, which was entirely the appeal. We stayed in The Heron Suite in the Wood Barn, which definitely has rooms that are more luxurious compared to the main house. The furnishings are contemporary and decor well appointed. The bathroom has a large soaker tub, separate shower, and radiant floor heating. The bed is soft but not the most comfortable I've slept in. There is a kitchenette area with a sink and small fridge. There is also a nice seating area with a sizable couch and flat screen TV. The place was complete with an ipod dock connected to surround sound. Overall, it felt like a studio apartment (700 sqft) rather than a hotel room, which made it very homey and relaxing. The only negatives were a nonfunctioning gas fireplace and lack of bathtub essentials like bubbles or candles. I also didn't care for the cork floors and think carpeting would have been much cozier. The hotel "lobby" has a small seating area and dining room where they serve breakfast (included in your stay). Breakfast consisted of run-of-the-mill continental items but also made-to-order fritattas, which were savoury and filling. Service was perfect. Outdoors, there's a fire pit that they keep going all night. Next time, I'll remember to bring marshmallows. The house sits on a pond and is a 10 minute walk to the beach. There is supposedly a beach area not too far from the hotel that is lined with rugged pink granite but it was so frigid that we didn't get that far. I'd recommend this place but you have to enjoy secluded getaways and solitude. I'm not giving it 5* because part of my joy in vacations is eating great food and my restaurant experience at 1854 (written as separate review) was lackluster. Their main restaurant is only open half the year. read more

Stone House is a charming and beautiful property in a quiet, off-the-beaten path town 50 minutes away from Newport. Our room, aptly named "Egret," was spacious, clean, and lovely, with a beautiful pond view out the rows of shutter windows. We arrived after lunch was served, and the chef (Ron) and the front desk staff went out of their way to make us feel at home with an outstanding freshly made salad and homemade pizza, along with friendly conversation. In the evening, the onsite fire pit gave us a place to warm up under the stars with freshly baked chocolate cookies, fresh fruit, and cheese provided to Stone House guests. Just about a half mile walk from the property are quiet rocky beaches for exploring. We highly recommend a stay at the Stone House! read more

This review is for the tap room since I live in the area and do not vacation at the Stone House. I don't write many reviews but this experience could not go without one. We ordered clam cakes as our appetizer. When I broke the first one open is was uncooked, our lovely bartender ( the only good part of our experience) noticed and sent it back. Apologized and said they were making us a "new" plate. It came back on the same plate with one missing. I've worked in the service industry for 17 years myself... so for an $8 for seven clam cakes I expected our full order. Your not fooling anyone. Then came our dinner. I had crab cake sandwich. It was pretty good... no complaints. But my partners burger was uncooked. He ordered it medium and it came out rare as could be. Since we are service industry people we just didn't want to complain and tried to just get through it. After eating the barely cooked edges of the burger we decided we were done. I myself work in customer service and I am appalled that after two uncooked dishes ($8 clam cakes and a $14 burger) we would expected at the very least a complimentary drink or something! The service was great! Our bartender was excellent. She made my cocktail just like I requested. We still left a 25% tip since it was obvious she was embarrassed by the food that was handed to us. The bartender went to put the burger in the bus bin and then looked at and herself and turned and walked it to the kitchen. So it didn't go without it being addressed. We just still had an $80 bill, which I know she had no control over. I guess it also didn't help that the woman sitting on the side of us had on enough diamonds to feed a small country and the woman behind us was barking about how your house isn't that big, its only 12,000 sq ft. So if you want to be in the company of rich summer people and a really nice atmosphere with under cooked food then this is the place for you. The food sucked, the cocktail and service was great, nice atmosphere (without the skukes) I would go back for a cocktail but not for food. Seriously, get it together. Its some clam cakes and a burger. If a chef can't get that right then I would be really nervous to try the $24 salmon. read more

Plenty of parking in the lot. The place usually is not very busy. The atmosphere is nice and different. Its a basement turned into a pub like restaurant. However its not very suited if you need to bring a stroller or baby carrier - narrow stairs. The pita chips and hummus are really good. I have had the chef special risotto on two occasions. I really like their risotto. My husband ordered a burger and said it was average. Desert is okay. They could be better for the price. Price wise the place is expensive, but the food is average. I will say however that the staff has always been very accommodating with my requests. Service however has been hit and miss. One time when I got up to use the bathroom the waitress asked if I knew where it was and I said I did and then she said "okay" and rolled her eyes at me. Maybe she was having a rough night. Another time the waitress seemed preoccupied and got our entrees and desserts wrong. The last time we went there the waitress was very nice and friendly. read more

Went there recently. Lobster stew and a "sprung greens" salad. Delicious! The atmosphere is great. You go down a little stairway and duck your head as you push open a set of swinging doors. In the winter, a fire burns in the gas fireplace and people are sitting at the bar. Comfortable, stylish decor. Note that the restaurant has gone through several complete changes of staff and management, and consistency has suffered as a result. In late 2009 the 1854 restaurant was excellent. In late 2010 it was poor. I just went back recently and had a fine meal. read more

Strike two..........I want to LOVE 1854 as we haven't many options in town. The atmosphere in the tap room is perfectly cozy on a cold winter evening, the service is always great. But my burger experience last night has left a bad taste in my mouth. A couple of months ago however, I had the best burger and I returned craving the same fresh, juicy, bright red rare, hand formed patty of goodliness. 1854 did not deliver. The preformed patty was not fresh, juicy, nor bright red. It was gray rare. I sent it back. Another gray, rare patty arrived. In this case my fellow foodies, consistency is not a good thing. I will hope for the best and give it one more go. read more

Stone House Tavern, the old historic Speakeasy area below the mansion is a restaurant and bar. The food, while not an over abundance of a selection, is in a word FANTASTIC! They also have a prefixed menu which changes and is a great value. The stuffies (stuffed Quahogs) are excellent and are flavored perfectly. The NY strip steak, my personal favorite, is simply to die for! Prime large cut of flavorful steak and grilled to perfection. Better than most steak houses I have gone to! The bar and drinks are excellent, with the bartender coming to your table to make sure you liked your drink. Nice touch! The service is warm, friendly and attentive. Quant, romantic , and, in my opinion , worth the long trip to get there! read more

We wanted an Inn near Newport! Website said 6.8 miles Turns out 47 minutes and that no traffic! Closest place play serves a full breakfast is 10miles away ! Ok , dinner food ok had to order extra sauce because pasta served pasty and dry. 4 whites,4 reds cheap wine! Desert ?? A sorbet an cheesecake! We could not charge dinner to our room! Newport Group !! Really get it together! We're regular FourSeasons guest an this place has a long way to go! Real joke that we can't get breakfast since it is part of the room charge! Train your staff on guest service if you want any kind of good rating! We'll see what the next 2days bring. If we had not already drive 6hrs to get here we would have left!!!! Stayed in the Warren Room. The older portion of the inn appears nicer. The service was poor. We left for the beach around 10:00 am and returned at 2 p.m to a room that was never serviced. The finish of this room is poor. The flooring is separated near the fireplace and someone had stapled bug screens in front of the casement windows (on the inside). The bathroom floor isnt sloped properly and water from the open shower begins to drain towards the bathroom door. the sinks dont work well and the room refridgerator is actually a wine cooler (who needs to keep 20 bottles of wine cold in their hotel room?) The skylight had some sort of plastic mat over it (to stop a leak?) On a positive ...the beach is great and the building looks great from the outside. Disappointing, it has potential to be great. read more

I had a massage/facial at the spa here this summer, and it was wonderful (if expensive). Calming, peaceful, relaxing- everything you'd want. Didn't see the guest rooms, but would love to come stay for a weekend sometime. read more

I love the atmosphere but the food was ok. I had the lobster over corn cakes. The lobster was very small and I didn't see any corn the cakes. I had the salmon which was over salted and over cooked. read more

I'm surprised by the low scoring reviews for this restaurant because me and my party found it to be great. We were a party of 4 there to celebrate a birthday with a nice meal. The ambiance was very nice, dimly lit but with a lot of charm. Our waitress Julie was down to earth with a touch of sarcasm, which some will not understand and take well, but she was nice, extremely friendly, cared about our dining experience, and was spot on with her recommendations. We had the fritters and mussels for appetizers. The fritters were good, but the mussels were okay. The main courses rocked though and enhanced with a nice bottle of wine. RI and CT can't seem to produce any good reds, so we opted for a California vintage. We had the scallops, cod loin, swordfish, and lamb chops. Everyone ate every bite and agreed the food was tasty and excellent, especially the scallops. The dessert we shared was a warm toffee coffee cake. Awesome! One thing they could improve on is have an espresso machine. This is a great place to come for dinner. If you're looking for an uptight place, this isn't it. This place only offers fantastic tasting food within a relaxed and charming atmosphere with good service. I definitely will try and return again and introduce this place to others. The place was amazing! We stayed in the barn off to the side of the main house and it was stunning. Awesome interior design and the staff were super nice and accommodating. The outside view is also beautiful, green and lush. I have nothing but good things to say about this place!! read more

Had a group of 12 there this past July. They were accommodating and set us up in a private room with a great view. The food was quite good but the service was pretty slow. We arrived about 6:30p for dinner and weren't out of there until about 10p. We enjoyed each others conversation, but it would have been great if it moved along a bit more and details like filling water glasses and wine were more in the rotation. read more

We read the previous reviews of the Stonehouse and they were very mixed, this made me nervous. However, I think the people with the negative reviews must have been staying in a different hotel to us.. Our stay was nothing short of fantastic, the rooms were clean, well equipped and spacious, The staff were friendly, attentive and courteous, the menu was well balanced, well priced and delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed our whole weekend, If you are looking for the Newport experience (Rowdy, boozy and busy) then this is not the place for you, but if like us, you are looking for a relaxing weekend in beautiful surroundings, strolls along the beach, good food and comfortable surroundings then look no further, than the Stonehouse. I recently attended a wedding at the Stone House Inn and the staff was professional and went above and beyond the call. The valet had given my car key to another car owner and was not able to leave. Patrick and Lew could not have been more calm and accommodating as I know they had no control over the subcontracted valet staff. My sister was able to get it all worked out as Patrick personally drove me back to my hotel (approx 30 minutes away) only to return back to work because he was closing the event.
