To start, the ambiance is incredible- from beautiful grounds to the amazing dining area where we sat outside- you truly feel like you are in a special place. Flowers and fairy lights made the terrace enchanting. Our server, from South Africa, was charming and helpful, without being cloying. She helped us pick a wonderful local Chardonnay to get the party started. We ordered the Kampachi with sea grass and the grilled octopus to start. Both were tasty, thoughtful in presentation, and definitely whet our appetites. For our entrees, we had the steak Diane and the venison and we were in heaven. I have never had a better steak Diane, and I've had it many times. The venison was perfectly prepared, tender and paired with a very complimentary sauce. Everything was amazing. Bartender Manny and Waiter Emanuel were top notch and made the entire night a special event. These two know how to make a night. We had a choice of Laurent Perrier Brut Champagne, Vovetti Prosecco, bellinis, mimosas, and varied juices. Conveniently, the herbs and vegetables used are grown in their organic garden. The Stonehouse is hidden away in a mostly residential area. We got lost on the way there; make sure to route it out well in advance. Our table was right on the outside edge with a beautiful view of the lush garden area, but there really isn't a bad table to be had. For an entree I got the burrata salad and it was very fresh & tasty. For dessert our table shared the banana foster, crunchy chocolate cake, the chocolate soufflé, and the grand marnier soufflé. All were wonderful, and you must stay for dessert. The entire meal exceeded any expectations! The way the food runners present the meal is very professional, and the table side services our table got (steak diane, banana foster) were both incredible and very tasty! One of the best fine dining experience we had. We went here for our 5 year wedding anniversary. I had talked to them few days in advance to prepare special Jain food (no onion, no garlic, no potatoes, no mushroom, no egg etc the whole deal). The Stonehouse is a magical setting for dinner, one of the most romantic restaurants around, and the food is good, too. After winding your way up to the resort, then winding your way to the valet, and finally winding your way up the stairs to the restaurant, you feel you are truly transported to another land. The original stone building serves as a lounge, and an adjoining added-on room with huge wood beams and a giant fireplace forms the romantic dining area. It's a wonderful spot to sit near the fire on a cool evening. On warmer evenings, and outside area is canopied by thousands of tiny lights, and offers quieter acoustics. The Hamachi and Uni appetizer is a wonderfully refreshing way to start. The house specialty is a classic Steak Diane, flamed tableside with brandy. The prime filet did not disappoint, and the reduction and sauteed mushrooms that accompanied it were sublime. The extensive wine list offers both high-end local wines and international selections. The Steak Diane is usually prepared table-side but sadly this time due to high winds, it was done inside the kitchen. Valet parking is complimentary. Nestled in tranquil Montecito and part of the San Ysidro Ranch resort, this Stonehouse Restaurant is as romantic and beautiful as it gets. I am certain there are other equally romantic, beautiful restaurants, but I feel safe in saying this place will compete with the best of them. This place surpassed every expectation I had.... and then some. Ironically, we were only here for brunch/lunch, but I can only imagine how even more magnificent this place becomes at night. Wow ! At the recommendation of my boss, he suggested this place for a nice day trip away from home (I had a few days off, and he thought this would be fun for me 'n my hubby). Boy, was he right. Even with traffic, we still made it door-to-door in one hour's time....... so easy and such a cool (literally and figuratively) place for a getaway. I only wish we could afford to stay in one of the unique cottage bungalows.... but those are waaaaay out of our price range. The restaurants are quite pricey, too, but I always seem to justify those, and they are not nearly the same as the cost of one night's stay.....but still, a chunk of change. Honestly, the best words I can think of to describe this place is casual elegance. There's a real down-home feel to this resort, yet, some very important people have passed through these doors.........world leaders, celebrities, and yes, your everyday people like me. (President) John Kennedy and his wife, Jackie stayed here on their honeymoon (!!)...... and in fact, have one of the bungalows named after them where they stayed. Winston Churchill is another. Fred Astaire stayed here with his wife.... and many more. I cannot stress enough how unbelievably beautiful this restaurant is. They have two restaurants on the premises, but Stonehouse is where we were told to go.... I can easily see why. I have to say that I walked in without having first checked them on Yelp or anywhere else, so when I glanced at their brunch time menu and saw a flat fee of $75.00, I silently gasped. While I've paid that before for brunch, it was for a buffet brunch, in which one NEVER eats enough food to justify it, but somehow, I reason it out in my mind. This, however, was a sit-down meal with more like a 3 course prix-fixe menu. Don't get me wrong. There was more than enough food to go around, but I was taken aback by the $75.00 PER PERSON fee for brunch, which, by the way, includes free-flowing French champagne. (One could also order free-flowing bellinis or juices, too.) Our meal began with a lovely basket of breakfast breads and muffins. My favorite was a lemon poppyseed quick bread. That was soooooooo delicious, bursting with lemon flavor. I tasted some of the other breads in the basket, but this was, by far, my personal favorite. I didn't get to taste the cinnamon bun, however, because my husband gobbled up both pieces before I had a chance. For our first course, I ordered the artichoke flatbread, which was wonderful. It had truffles, pecorino cheese, tomatoes with a sherry vinaigrette..... absolutely divine. As tasty as my appetizer was, I have to say, my husband had the better of the two. He ordered a smoked salmon and trout appetizer, which was served on a crispy potato gallette with a quail egg and some caviar, topped with a small dollop of crème fraiche. The marriage of flavors was sublime. For our entrees, I had the pan-seared Scottish salmon, which came with balsamic flavored onions, drizzled with whole grain mustard sauce (very light yet bursting with flavor) on a bed of wilted baby spinach leaves. I loved it. It was very filling, yet not too heavy as one might expect with a creamy sauce. Extremely delicious. My husband had what appeared to be their most popular entrée, the buttermilk fried chicken and Belgium waffle. A huuuuuuuge plate of waffles and chicken, expertly prepared, served with beautiful fresh strawberries, maple syrup and country gravy (on the side). I took a bite of the chicken, and it was quite moist without being the least bit greasy. As for the waffle, I didn't taste it, but it must have been good because he devoured as much as he could without stuffing himself. Portions of each dish were huge, so one would not leave hungry no matter what. For dessert (part of the prix-fixe meal), I ordered their warm berry crisp served with vanilla gelato while my husband ordered the Meyer lemon tart that was infused with lavender (couldn't taste it) and served with some orange blossom honey whipped cream. While I liked the lemon tart, my berry crisp was the winner of which one was best. Honestly, we were quite full, so neither of us finished our desserts. The meal was excellent, and between the service and quality of the food, it was top notch, 5-stars all the way. I WILL return for their dinner one of these days.... I have the utmost of faith it will be superb, and I can't wait to see how nightfall will make this place even more romantic than it already is. read more

Sitting there you feel like you are close to heaven, with twinkling lights above you and the mountain view on one side, lush soothing trees on one side and the ocean far in the horizon ahead. My fiance (Bryan W) was so sweet and wanted to take me to a romantic steakhouse for my birthday so he made reservation to dine here on the day of my birthday. This place is located up into the hill in San Ysidro Ranch. We arrived earlier than our reservation time and walked around the place. It's very nice place and has nice manicured garden full of fresh herbs. I've never seen so many rosemary plants along the walk way! Our reservation was at the upper patio area and it was very lovely especially after the sunset and atmosphere was quite romantic. Once we were seated and ordered, they served us a complimentary olives and radish of which has a sharp spicy taste to it. It was very tasty and interesting at the same time. They also served us blueberry bread, sesame bun and pistachio and cheese on cracker. They are very tasty! I'm usually not a drinker since it's special occasion, I figure why not. My drink was cucumber mojito and my fiance's drink is Pear Blossom. I like the freshness of cucumber with mint but my fiance thought it was OK. His Pear Blossom was quite strong for my liking! Our appetizers were Dungeness crab and sashimi hamachi. The Dungeness crab cake was really good. Probably the best crab cake I've ever had because it's all crab meat and not to mention it's quite filling too due to generous portion. Hamachi sashimi was good but a little steep for 3 little pieces. My fiance and I used to get half a pound from Fish King but of course we didn't have it nicely decorated with home grown vegetables; julliene radish, ponzu and alfafa sprouts. Parmesan crusted Halibut was so thick and flaky! Very generous portion since it was steak size though the sauce was a bit overpowering. My fiance had the filet mignon, which had very nice flavor and prepared rare! We were too full to have any dessert but since it was my birthday, they gave us complimentary chocolate covered strawberry with chocolate signed "Happy Birthday". One of my favorite things was the excellent service. Our server was witty and always there when we needed him. The next day we read about his in a local Santa Barbara paper which was neat. He is definitely a big asset to the restaurant and organization. I had the steak Diane which was fantastic. I do recall it being pretty dim inside which could either be romantic or annoying depending on how good your eyesight is. I would definitely go back for a special occasion. Apparently most people are dazzled by the surroundings and confuse what they're looking at with what they're eating. My husband and I ordered a decent bottle of wine, a bread basket, the steak, the salmon, and a mac and cheese to share (+2 sparkling waters). I definitely recommend exploring the garden. The only thing I would improve is the situation with flies. Although it is natural to have them because of the fruit trees. Also, the upstairs patio gets very hot! I would recommend to sit outside on the first level. But then again, for the ocean view you may want to sit upstairs. Service: The service was just great! Nothing to add. Food: the food was good.. BUT! To be honest I expected something even more exciting from this place. The food should really match the beauty of the ranch! We had duck and halibut for the entrees with a side of of Brussels sprouts. All were good dishes, just not outstanding. The octopus on the other side that we got for an appetizer was just great! The softest octopus I have ever tried! Definitely recommend! The bread in the bread basket was very very good too. I made a reservation months ago and I'm pretty sure whoever took down our reservation didn't put it in the computer because they had no record of it when we arrived. We came with another couple to celebrate my husband's birthday. These things happen and we were understanding, but what irked me is that the front desk staff implied several times that we weren't telling the truth. However the rest of the evening really made up for it. The steak Diane served table side was phenomenal. Fish and chips was good but nothing to rave about. Bananas foster was also very good.
