I needed a few things while I was in the area and decided to stop in and although I found everything I needed and it was well organized. The part I didn't find pleasing was the personnel and it is like that as well in Wallingford. I chalk the up to bad management both on the stores level and district level. The little charlatans need to be trained better and maybe Management is actually lazier than the employees. I've seen the store managers at the Wallingford location and they could care less about helping you. And this place seems like a carbon copy. Sorry we are inconveniencing you all. read more

Here's a head scratcher for ya'. Why does the Wallingford S&S carry Stop & Shop BRAND hot dogs in natural casings, but not the North Haven Stop & Shop? They're only a few miles apart, and you'd think they'd make a point of carrying their OWN BRAND of products throughout the chain. Answer, when I asked why at the deli counter was, get this, "we don't get deliveries from the same distribution center". **********WHAAAAAAAAAAT????? ******** It's your own brand! What a screwed up system, if that's the case. So......I just go to the Wallingford store JUST for hot dogs. It's about the same distance from home (this one is 4.3 miles, Wallingford is 4.9 miles), but a little more hassle to get to. These hot dogs are THAT good, that are worth the drive just for them. They're the only hot dogs I buy. All my other grocery needs are very well met by West Center Market on South Turnpike Road, in Wallingford. read more

Warning: If you are concerned about being in a grocery store and opt to use pick up service, be very, very careful and check your bank account. On 1/3 after spending 45 min. submitting a big on line order, I arrived at the confirmed (yes, confirmed) store, day and time. Zero for me-no record, no groceries. Called the manager of the pick up service. No help-no information-no ideas and certainly no apology. Fortunately, the order was saved on the website, so I re-ordered and selected 1/6 for pick up. Checked my account and the payment to S&S appeared 2x; one pending and the other PAID (although I had not yet picked up ANY order). How can they debit two times and get payment before order even goes out? Called customer service (local store refers you there) and after 45 minutes of listening to lousy recorded music, the customer service person had no record of the processed debit & suggested that I contact my bank. What? Oh, yeah, the bank LAUGHED. Like they will hang on the phone for 45 minutes to recover my funds... Raise the prices, grab your money and refuse to problem solve. read more

I visit this Stop & Shop a couple times a month. Poorly run. Employees, including what appear to be supervisors, have no customer service skills. The other evening, there was one register open with a line of over 8 customers long. The young man working the register was doing a good job ringing and bagging groceries. Three other workers were standing around chatting less than 5 foot away. The young man said to the supervisor that they need to open another register. She shrugged her shoulders and said the customers can go to the self checkout if they want and kept on with her chatting. Really. Last night I was there again, the cashier acted put out by having to bag my few items. The conveyor belt was dirty and crusty just disgusting. I go to the Stop & Shop in Wallingford and the vibe there is way better. read more

Alright its my local stop and shop. Its cheaper than Big Y for most things and there Nature's Promise stuff is pretty reasonable. Two things: 1. The layout of the place is pretty junky. They throw all this walmartish in the dead center of store. Food Food Food, junk. Its not going to make me buy an $80 umbrella or last holidays candy. Please don't interupt my grocery shopping flow! 2. Alright, I'm a sucker. We totally end up wasting tons of plastic bags. I buy those stupid 99 cent green bags. (I also have the gourmet Whole Foods bag, that had the ladies @ ShopRite jealous). Now in order for this reusable bag thing to work, you have to bring the bags into the store's. Now I'm a guy, and I don't use no stinkn' shopping cart. I have to try to juggle all this crapola, so I just use the bags as my basket. Least then I know how much I can carry out to the car. While standing in self check out, I got scolded by the self-checkout runner. "Are you putting your groceries in Green Bags? How do we know your not stealing things? What are you thinking?". Alright, thanks for the great idea! But I'm standing in the checkout line, obviously I'm paying for the stuff. If you want me to use these bags, save your company money, and not even give me a discount like every other chain, then don't give me any crap about it. The produce is disgusting. It's either rotting on the shelves, or rots a day after getting it home. There's fruit flies on the onions and potatoes. I've often gotten bad chicken and pork here. The store is also dirty, and the staff inappropriate. They don't greet you at the checkout, because they are too busy chatting with one another. Stephanie is the absolute worst. She is obnoxious, and is nice one day and insulting the next. I said, hi and how are you to her at the checkout. She loudly yelled, what's up with the 20 freaking questions!!! It's my local stop and shop and it is cheaper than Big Y, but I still go to Big Y over this place. The service is mediocre at best and many of the staff there look completely miserable. I almost always have a problem with the produce. The one time I pointed out rotting fruit to a worker he picked it up pretended he would get rid of it then placed it back in the same spot. He eventually realized I saw it, but obviously didn't care. The low quality produce products and poor service keep me out of the store. The only things I'll buy here are prepackaged foods and canned goods. Who wants to shop in a place where everyone looks like they're miserable? read more

This is the single worst grocery store in the North Haven area! They literally take no pride in customer service. Lines are long, all the staff are extreme part timers (working less than 15 hours a week). They do not value their employee base or cleanliness. The bathrooms, aisle floors and shelves are filthy. It just shows me that the owners of this franchise care only about maximizing their profit and very little about the customers who provide it. read more

This Stop & Shop is horrible. There is usually only 2 lanes open for checkout, other than self checkout. The produce stays fresh for a day at best. And now they have their own employees following customers around like pan handlers asking for money for cancer research. read more

This is my local stop & shop and so I'm here at least once or twice a week. The thing I find most annoying is that the high-school kids working the registers have no understanding of common sense or customer service orientation. They simply lack in training! The gossip with each other ALL THE TIME. I'm not that much older but I remember when I worked in retail as a teenager we were trained very well to be professional and courteous to the customers. If we talked among ourselves we would stop if a customer came up to the register. These kids have no problems talking in front of customers about the parties they went to this past weekend or the raves they are going to attend the next weekend or just generally complaining about their coworkers and their jobs. They have no problem with continuing on their conversations with the cashiers at the register next to them even after they take my money and make me stand there and wait for them to finish talking. Train them to be professional and polite! Yesterday I went there again and the teenage boy at the register did not say one word to me - not a "hello", didn't even ask me if I have my Stop & Shop card, did not tell me what my total was, did not wish me a nice day. He clearly did not want to be there and was bothered by the fact he had customers. The layout of the store is a pain. Especially in the produce area. During peak times, it is nearly impossible to get by with a cart. There are always employees there unloading things and they don't try to get around us customers, it's the other way around - they expect the customers to get around them. Check out the Stop & Shop in Fairfield - it is so much better - spacious layout, plenty of room to move around - much more produce and better selections. I often go to the Fairfield one after work as it is much nicer than the North Haven one - however, it being fairfield county - I have to pay a lot more so I try to avoid it. This location doesn't sell pre-packed grilled chicken breasts anymore. I used to buy them all the time to have for lunch salads - they came in two options: lemon herb and balsamic. I wish they would bring these back - now I have to go to Big Y down the road just to get this type of chicken. They do have grilled chicken breasts at the deli counter - I tried it, and 2 out of 3 times they were undercooked. I hope this Stop & Shop location can get it together soon. I go here out of convenience but might as well just start going to Big Y down the road. read more

About as good as a food truck thatsells leftovers and the website is a waste of time they do all online stuff to distract and divert real advice or complaints and the meat is very unappealing as it appears cut or trimmed by novice butchers then after many many many years they waxed half the floor in a attempt to win back customers after the labor strike as they lost customers to a nearby grocery store during that time when townsfolk found the pleasure of shopping in a clean well kept with waxed floors and cleanliness that abounds . Also they now are selling some of the most oddball items of all time in my opinion this store is only good for a small portion of my weekly grocery needs and the big push of natures promise seems to be a basis for overpriced food and whatnot the one saving grace here is the deli is ok however I am not impressed by boarshead one bit the s and s brand deli meats are as good read more

Long lines, not enough cashiers and the store needs to be revamped. They older workers are rude and set in their ways. They don't say hi or thank you when checking out. The pastries in the bakery section are undercooked. The deli workers wearing gloves touch all sorts of things besides food and continue to use the gloves when slicing foods. I prefer not to go here but I do for convenience. They need better management/ employees. read more

I shopped at this store for years, mostly because I worked the next plaza over. I can walk in at any time and I know exactly where to find what I'm looking for. My problem is service and quality, the two most important traits of any business. The produce is always well into its shelf life, as if they keep the new stock in the back room until the old stuff has disappeared or become inedible. Many a time I've bought a bag of potatoes that appear to be high quality, only to get them home and find they have more eyes than the CIA. Some of the produce goes bad practically overnight. The meats are generally not very well wrapped and price-inflated, which may account for the overabundance of stock.Using the deli-ordering machine is usually a waste of time, unless you plan on doing $200 worth of shopping. You start at the opposite end, get to the deli, and the tickets from the machine are still sitting there, untended. If you grab a number, don't tell them you used the computer until after they fill your order. Otherwise, you're in for an even longer wait. Service: if you get a smile, it's usually forced and not genuine. There are even a few cashiers that wouldn't smile if you told them the funniest joke ever. If you can find someone in the aisles, you generally will have to wait until their finished socializing before you can get any assistance. Sorry, North Haven. If you want quality and service at Stop & Shop, you'll need to travel one town north. read more

I live in Wallingford but visit this store about once a month. It's clear no one at this store is reading these because this place has only gotten worse! Or it could be that management is just not concerned. This store needs complete management overhaul. Today neither produce scale was working and Lisa in produce said she "knows nothing about it." Not her job, said she couldn't help and did not offer to find someone who could help. The muffins in bakery had no labels indicating what they were and the case was filthy. What we should all be doing is getting in touch with corporate--my next call. read more

It's my local Stop & Shop, but if Wallingford wasn't so much further I'd go there. Week after week there is 1 scale that works in the produce section during the peak hours. On average I'll spend 10 minutes just waiting to weight my fruits and veggies. The isles are tight and the random polls in the middle of the isles are annoying. The one feature I wish the North Haven Stop & Shop had was a lane exclusively for Scan It Customers (like Wallingford & Hamden). It's nice to be able to walk up and not have to wait for someone in the self checkout with a full carriage to finish their purchase. When my wife and I get to the register it takes less than 2 minutes, but we have to wait in line for 10-15 minutes because of those who don't use Scan It. read more

Ridiculous lines and 3 lanes, one of which is express on a friggin Sunday morning. Aggravating!

This Stop & Shop is the most convenient to my house. That is only reason I go there on occasion. Today may be my last visit for a while. 1. You can't get through the produce area without maneuvering your cart around the large metal carts that the employees use to restock the fruits and vegetables. Today there were at least 3 left strewn about, forcing shoppers to either redirect themselves or have to wait for others to pass through the narrow way. Forget shopping for an item that is across from a cart. 2. The store was fairly busy at 4 p.m. Not a great time for 3 employees to empty end caps and redo them and then stand there and take pictures while shoppers are trying to get through to the nearby registers. 3. And those three people rearranging the end cap, the really should keep their gossipy chatter to a minimum. Hearing them disparage fellow employees is really uncalled for. This is the second time in a week I've heard employees negatively talk about co-workers. (The only one was near the florist area where two long-time female workers were restacking the gift cards.) 4. The smoke from employees who smoke around the perimeter of the store (front and back) that wafts back into the store is disgusting to smell when you food shop. 4. And on a positive note - Stephanie, the girl who works the self-service checkout lanes, is a breath of fresh air. She's always helpful in working out the frequent problems in self checkout. She's always bubbly and happy and in a good mood. It's the little things, like her wishing everyone a great day on their way out, that really make a difference!. read more

This store is almost insulting to shop in. It's dirty, crowded and the lay out is frustrating. Aisles are crowded making navigating when it's busy a nightmare. Stop and Shop Corp should be embarrassed to have this store in the chain. The produce section is where this store really suffers...it's the worst. The fruits and veggies are not high quality, you must search carefully through bags of lettuce, cartons of strawberries, displays of apples...etc to find produce that is worth purchasing, I.E...not old and/or moldy and rotten. Yes, moldy and rotten veggies and fruits on display...and not just occasionally, it's the norm. I've brought several produce items to the customer service desk to turn in that had obvious signs of mold on them...the produce that we have actually purchased also doesn't seem to last long. It's frustrating buying bags of lettuce that you thoroughly "vetted" on Sunday and then opening it on a Tuesday (well within the Best Buy date) and having to toss out a third of the lettuce leaves as they are half rotten. Without exaggeration my family has had to throw out about 1/3 of the produce we have purchased here. Disgusting. The butchers area and seafood area is not much better, steaks are poorly cut and expensive. The fish....I won't buy any here. So, why do we shop here?? We usually don't anymore but sometimes have to for convenience. When we do we usually just buy all our dry goods here, no issues with those. We generally go out of our way and hit Big Y down the road...a little pricier but clean and much better produce. Summer time it's all farm stands. read more

Went there yesterday 9/6/15, corn was .17cents an ear. Ask the young man if the corn was fresh, he said it just came in, the corn was old and drying up when I shuck it, cooked it anyway, was tough as leather. Went to seafood counter and asked for 4 lobesters, which were on sale, came home and noticed 2 bags weighed the same 2.91 lbs., same sticker for both. The kicker is the checkout girl charged me .50cents an ear for white corn. WILL never go back to stop &shop....buyer beware read more

i LOVE this grocery store. I live right off the green in North Haven and out of all of the grocery stores around this is the only one I go to. The staff is pleasant and very helpful. The deli basically knows my order and are very helpful, the lady with the blonde hair in self check out is so sweet and kind and im always in and out. I would not go to any other place. The prices are resonable and the sales are great. I never leave without saving at least $20. read more

I don't know how anyone can think that Stop and Shop prices are lower than Big Y's. The only reason that S&S has lowered their prices at all, is because of Big Y's competition. It is unfortunate to see the changes in Big Y of late, because the extras from this store was what made it so nice... Unfortunately, for some crazy reason, many people continue to shop down the street in that smaller, dirtier, less friendly, and certainly not less expensive store and Big Y's cut back to make ends meet. I'm afraid that soon, North Havenites won't have a choice because Big Y will close it's doors. Then we'll be stuck going to S&S. YUK! To be honest, I've been truckin' it to Shop Rite lately, and even Aldi's....Both have better prices than either Big Y or S&S!! I will be saddened, though, if Big Y can't hold on. I like having my groceries bagged and people still saying "welcome" and "have a nice day"... People...get out of Stop and Shop and over to Big Y, you'll be happier you did! read more

went to this location to buy a birthday cake. poor variety of baked goods, even just as a chain supermarket. oh well, just my luck. went up to the cashier, said hello first (yes, in a friendly tone). NO hello back. cashier rings up my stuff and just stands there without telling me the final price. when i hand over the money, she gives me changes back, and then just turn herself around. is that how you welcome your customers? i think not. read more
