In Glen Rose, TX, you're hard pressed to find food that isn't sauteed in bacon grease, deep-fried and smothered with BBQ sauce. StorieBook Cafe was a little haven of healthy, homemade soups, salads, sandwiches and wraps. Even the BBQ-lover in our group (grumpy that we were eating sandwiches for lunch) had to admit his grilled cheese and tomato soup were awesome. I had the Turkey Avocado wrap, an incredible "stuffed" potato soup (which does actually have bacon on it, but big chunks of actual bacon, none of that bac-o-bits garbage), and a real cappuccino (a delicacy in a small Texan town). Everything was delicious. The atmosphere wraps you up like a warm blanket, and the staff were as friendly as can be - even staying open late to accommodate us. I wanted to hang out there all day. The only critique I can come up with his that they don't take American Express (but Visa & MC are ok), and the simple side salad was a little blah according to one of my co-workers. We didn't try any special salads though. I'm sure they're terrific. If you're in the area and need a break from really heavy food, do yourself a favor and stop here. You won't be sorry. read more

My wife and I visited the cafe this past weekend for the first time. It was an extremely cute, well decorated place, very charming. However, it was after 130pm on a Saturday afternoon, and service, while friendly, was quite slow. I got the turkey club, and my wife got the chicken and dumplings with a grilled roast beef. The turkey club was extremely bland. Again, everyone was friendly, but considering the restaurant only offered soup, salads and sandwiches, everything seemed very bland. read more

Came through town on our way to Tow, and stopped here for lunch. Loved it! Good atmosphere, good food, and friendly service. Lots of books and kids would love the play area. Amazingly cute place and the food is delicious! I love the Peach tea. Their chicken salad on wheat berry was delicious - not too sweet or too tangy - and the chicken chunks were huge. Kids loved the PB&J and ham & cheese w/chicken & dumpling soup. Hubs got a half Rueben & half ABC - greatness! We will be back. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. They offer a variety of wraps and sandwiches and even offered to cut our son's grilled cheese into the shape of a dinosaur (we had just visited Dinosaur World). We took the scenic route from Dallas to Austin and are so glad we did! We stopped at the StorieBook Café and had a fabulous lunch outside under the trees - simple food but fresh and delicious. And the best pickles I have ever had - super crisp and a little hot. Wow. But the prize is Storie herself and her story if you are lucky enough to meet her - fun and fabulous. Cute place. The name was a big draw when we made a recent trip to Dinosaur Valley State Park. We stopped here for lunch on the way in. The decor was eclectic and interesting, lots to look at. We have two kids and the play area was well-appreciated. It was atypical for a restaurant and had books, dolls, teasets, etc. The reason I can't give more stars is because the food really wasn't very good. My kids had grilled cheese sandwiches cut into the shape of dinosaurs, which they scarfed down in order to get back to the play area. I had a turkey wrap that was soggy with salad dressing. It was just dripping and messy. Not a lot of turkey in the wrap either. I was still hungry when I left because the thing was basically inedible so I salvaged what little meat I could and just left the rest of the mess on the plate. We were in a rush to get to the park, so I just ate snacks in the car. My husband fared a little better with what he ordered, the turkey club. It had more meat than my wrap, but it was not too filling either. Should we return to Glen Rose in the future for another trip to the park, we'll probably bypass this place in favor of a restaurant that is better known for its food than its decor. read more

StorieBook used to be really good. However, over the last 6 months or so, their food has been VERY INCONSISTENT. They make substitutions without letting you know. Sometimes the food is a decent amount - then the next time you go your salad will be half the size it was before. We ordered 3 salads - one was a decent size - the other two looked like they had taken one salad and divided it into two. The greek salad says it comes with greek dressing - for some reason they gave us ranch. This has happened on more than one occasion. My family and I stopped here while staying at rough creek lodge near by. We loved this place, the decor was interesting and the food was simple yet delicious. Especially loved the play area for our little ones and even enjoyed the trivia cards on the table to keep my significant other and myself entertained. The outside appearance worried us a bit when we pulled up but it just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover. We would definitely visit here again. read more
