WHEN: Wed @6pm I just need to begin this review by highlighting how amazing Ian was to my party. He's mindful, kind, attentive, and gave us such a stellar service! We made reservations here because we were staying here for the week. Our party of 5 adults and 2 toddlers were originally seated at the center of the room, and I asked if we could be moved to the booth where we can feel more close and not so separated. The dining table felt too formal and we like to sit closely...especially with children you'll want a booth. Anyway, point being, the staff was so kind of patient to allow us to move and I hope I wasn't being difficult doing this, but it made all the difference during our time here. A lot of things were ordered, and they even have a set menu for kids for $28: + Fruit with Coconut Yogurt - Kids may be disappointed as it looks like whipped cream but it tastes like tart yogurt. + Entree of either CHicken, Petit Filet, or Grilled Salmon + Dessert - Create your own dirt cup which can be fun for the kids. Here's some of the things I tried: ESPRESSO MARTINI - $18 Sweet and strong, you only need one! As for food, I lost my photos, and I had a taste of variety. I'm so sorry. This is not a thorough review, but all I can say quickly is: + They have complimentary warm bread and butter. + This place will serve the finest and freshest fish because of thier partnership with thier Sushi establishment. So try the ahi tuna. + Filet minion is pretty darn good + Bisque was sweet and creamy. + We were treated with a single portion of Beff Wellington and Cranberry sipping and it was so lovely. + Have I mentioned how amazing the service is? + They validate your parking if you came to park in the lot (this was helpful for friends who didn't stay with us at the resort) You'll have a wonderful time no matter what you order. Stopped in during a recent business trip. First let me say that the decor is very nice, I enjoy the open kitchen and the view and sounds of the chefs preparing each meal. I started my meal with the Seared Scallops, which were perfectly prepared and tasted amazing. The entire plate was a work of art and since I enjoy a well plated meal first, this one hit right on the money. For my main I enjoyed the South Texas Antelope Tenderloin. Any chance I have to sample a local dish I take it and this one delivered massively. I highly recommend trying this dish if you visit. I also had the chance to try the Seared Ahi Tuna, as our mains were taking a bit longer than expected and the chef personally delivered us a couple apology dishes. I appreciate a chef who can acknowledge an issue and do his best to fix it, so this was nice to see. The wait staff was very attentive and friendly and took great care of me and my party. Seeing the chef come out to the table to speak to us was a big deal to me. All in all I was very happy with my visit here and will certainly return if I ever get the chance to stay here again. The place is great for family dinning. The food is great, not a big menu but you will enjoy what they offer. We were a party of four (2 adults and 2 kids) and ended up paying $200. Mix of Texan and seafood. We tried soup, Halibut, Seared Ahi Tuna, Filet Mignon, and Grilled Salmon. For dessert do try their apple pie and dirt cake. The vibe is old country mix with contemporary. A wannabe fine dining restaurant... this ain't it. If you're going to charge the same prices as high end fine dining restaurants then you should deliver. Service was TERRIBLE. We did not get drinks until almost 25 minutes after we sat down (I am almost certain our waitress forgot about us) it wasn't even busy so there was no excuse. I ordered the chicken dish, (I knew better than to pay $68 for a filet from a place like this) and for a $40 chicken breast, the rotisserie chicken at Kroger is much better. I had low expectations going in, as I know how resort restaurants can be, but they went even lower than the low. We ended going to the snack bar downstairs because we left hungry. There is not a single bad thing to say about Stories and their staff! It is so difficult to find a place where ALL of the staff members are so lovely but Stories is the exception!! We were graced with having Patty-Lou as our server and she was exceptional! She was so attentive, helpful, and she even went above and beyond to ensure our experience was great. Her recommendations were extremely on point as she is very knowledgeable with the menu and the Lost Pines resort amenities. We are staying at the Lost Pines for a wedding but we will definitely return solely for Patty-Lou!! She is a top tier staff member and irreplaceable, as finding someone so genuinely attentive and caring is nearly impossible these days! The food was above and beyond! We ordered the cheese arrangement, antelope, wagyu strip steak, and chocolate torte. Everything was amazing and so intricately prepared as the food placement was beautiful and the food tasted even better! I wish I had taken photos but we will definitely be returning! Every time I've called the Hyatt and/or the restaurant I have received rude customer service. I've called several times trying to get a reservation only to be told to show up or today when I called I was told "I'll have to ask an manager" after waiting several minutes was told there was no manager available and to just show up to wait for an opening. Michael was a fantastic server and knew the menu inside and out. The staff were extremely accommodating with our request to move outside, since inside was too loud for us. But the porch was lovely - just be aware that the heaters are strong! The amuse-Bouche was tasty, as were the cocktails. The squash bisque was on point, and the winter salad was gorgeous. First time dining here, although I live about 25 miles away. Lovely decor, slightly dark clubhouse feel, with high ceilings and an outside porch. The menu was simple and streamlined. It looked to me like they would rather make a few things well than a number of things poorly. Our server, Michael, was very attentive and pleasant. I felt as though he would be on top of any things we needed. Yet he was not overbearing. The hydroponic greens and chicken were both good. We got a set menu that came with a salad appetizer, entree, shared sides and a dessert. The salad was a simple green salad with blackberries and corn bread croutons. There was too much dressing though. The salad was pretty standard but the corn bread croutons was a nice twist. The salmon was amazing. I believe it was partially broiled because it was unbelievably moist but the skin was crisp. This was probably my favorite part of the meal. The dessert was a chocolate bomb with peanut butter mousse inside. It was rich and decadent, and delicious. The food was really good, but my major complaint was the service. It was a slow and they mixed up our orders and forgot my cocktail. If you have the time to relax then that might not be too bad but this three course meal was spread over almost three hours. read more

Worst steak of my life. I'm not kidding. I have blood pressure issues and am not used to salt, so I rarely think something is under-seasoned. This was by far the most bland under-seasoned steak I've ever had. It also has zero sear. It truly was like eating a boiled steak. I'm so mad at myself for not sending it back, but there is always the fear you will get your food spit in. So disappointing because it was my friend's birthday dinner and her snapper was also bland. This overpriced place deserves no stars. I don't mind overpriced "fine dinning" restaurants, but the food here is a joke. We had salmon, "risotto" (yes, in quotes), and chicken. All horrible. We left in disappointment and went downstairs to the bar hopping that a good Old Fashion would make us forget the bad experience. I'm sad to report, they have no clue how to make an Old Fashion either. We are wishing we didn't come to this overprice, low standards place. Save your money, go eat somewhere else. Our waiter and service were good, but the food at this restaurant was very nearly inedible. The yogurt and honey with, (all 3), kid's fruit appetizers was frozen. The 2 petite filets we ordered medium rare came out well done and looked like hamburgers. We politely sent them back and again requested medium rare. The second time, they came out with a rare center and hard, dark outsides. The antelope was overcooked and inedible, especially disappointing given the $58 price tag. All meat at this restaurant had clearly been previously frozen. The mashed potatoes were thick, tasteless, and had a rubbery texture. We did not waste additional money on the dessert menu, but kids meals came with desserts, (build your own "dirt cups"). They were not any better. The crumbled Oreos were stale, bland, and mushy. Well done. Hotel restaurants can be so hit-or-miss. From my experience, those with fancy good reputations are usually the miss, while those that are unassuming and quaint are hit. Stories at Hyatt Lost Pines resort is hit. From the decor, to the menu, to the presentation, everything here is top notch. The chef has many creative options on the menu, but the veal chop was my choice. Perfect. We also ordered red velvet cake that was imprisoned behind a ghastly cage of chocolate. Also, perfect. If you stay here you must go, and if you live around the area, I'd highly recommend checking this place out. read more

This restaurant is located in the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort in Bastrop just east of the Airport off 71. I highly recommend this place for a special occasion diner and since it is located in a 5 star resort plan on spending the night.. The ambiance is very elegant with a vaulted ceiling and wood tables spaced far apart for privacy. The servers were always there but not not close enough to eavesdrop.. And the food oh the food is out of this world goodness. We tried several dishes but my favorites were the Salmon with Horseradish crust, Truffled mashed Potatoes and my glass of Frogs Leap Merlot. We stayed at Lost Pines this weekend and had reservations for dinner at Stories Fine Dining at 8:15pm which we had tried to move up a little earlier but were told that they were fully booked. We walked over a little earlier just to stay nearby and checked in with the hostess. She was very nice and even walked over to us and said our table was ready so we were able to be seated at 8pm. Upon walking in, only half of the restaurant had guests seated. The other half of the tables were empty...but we couldn't move up our reservation? Ok. We were seated and greeted shortly by our server who was very friendly as well. She took our drink and appetizer order which came out promptly however my husband ordered a bottle of wine and somehow that took about 15 minutes to arrive as well. We were seated next to a table of 4 who was very "vocal" which kind of ruined the atmosphere (this isn't the restaurant's fault however it did affect our experience) so I will refer to the as the "vocals". Finally, we were able to order our entrees. Once ordered, our bread basket came out at the same time as our appetizer and the food runners were pretty attentive and quick as well with refilling water, asking if we'd like more bread, etc. We nibbled on our appetizers and got lost in conversation until we realized our food had not arrived yet. Checked the time, 9:15pm. "Vocal" table next to us had already complained loudly about the A/C in the restaurant and at this point had started to complain about the service and why their food had not come out yet either. (Let me just also emphasize that when I say "vocal", I mean obnoxiously loud enough that the guests from across the restaurant turned their heads in attention). They complained about the service to the manager on duty as well who was apologetic and served them with comp'd cocktails and who knows what else. Needless to say, their entrees quickly came out. Meanwhile at our table, our bread plates had been stacked up, empty bread baskets were on the table and still no entrees. Time check: 9:30pm. At this point, the kids are getting restless and still have not eaten and no one had checked on us in over 30 minutes so we asked if they could at least check on the kids' food. They said they would and disappeared once again. Servers continue to walk by without having cleared our table and running food to other tables. One of the guys from the "vocals" has now stood up and beckoned the manager one more time to announce that his food was cooked incorrectly. One more time check for kicks: 9:50pm. Still no updates from the staff on the hold up. We have been seated for almost 2 hours with no entrées. At this point, with strong understanding and empathy for the staff who has had to deal with the drama at the table next door, we quietly called over the manager and server to ask if we can just cancel our food. The kids needed to be fed, my in-laws were exhausted and we were all losing our appetite with the lack of service. The manager apologized for the delay and asked if he could pack up our food for us and we kindly declined and said we would just pay for what we actually ate/drank. He turned to the server and said, "Take their card." Then walked away. That was the last we heard from his that evening. With heads down in disappointment, we quietly packed up our troops just in time for the "vocals" to turn their heads and complain about something new. We walked down to McDade's where we knew food was ready to serve and we could quickly buy something for the kids. I'm baffled by the experience we had at Stories considering it's supposed to be a Fine Dining experience and hope that this evening was addressed within their staff as a learning experience to find some improvement in service and management. read more

We have eaten at the fine dining restaurant at the Hyatt Hill Country in San Antonio and were blown away with the service, atmosphere and food most of all. We came to this restaurant with expectations that it would be as good or better and were very disappointed. The service was slow and the food was mediocre. For $50 plates that don't come with sides, I feel like I should be impressed. My sea bass was cooked nicely, but lacking any flavor. The Brussels spouts that accompanied it were burnt. My husband's chicken was overcooked. We will stick with the food truck next time as their tacos are $4.50 each and AMAZING! read more

Just so no one misunderstands me on this: This is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at and the service is superb. Period. For Chapter 1 (it is called Stories, get it), I had Diver Scallops and my wife had Cauliflower Soup. Excellent. For Chapter 2, I had the Smoked Duck and she had the Roasted Lamb. Phenomenal. For Chapter 3, we shared the Bread Pudding. Awesome. I talked to the owner and the head chef for a little bit. It's a nice cozy place and they take an interest on how everything is. The menu changes from time to time, so even though I'd tell everyone to get the duck or the lamb, it may not be on the menu for you when you go. This place is in the Lost Pines resort. Chef Eric is a master artist in the kitchen, twice now he has shown not only his excellence in pairing a variety of beer and wine to each plate. (The brewery and wine provider they paired with were top quality as well and impressed my serious beer snob, and budding wine snob.) He is an expert at presenting the food in a simple, yet artistic way without pretention. This has truly become one of my favorite places to dine as a nice get away from the ordinary when I feel I deserve something fine. I plan on spending a weekend at the restort itself (which is beautiful). But I would stay a weekend anyway just to eat each night in Stories. Needless to say I am a fan, and highly recommend this restaurant and resort as a small get away from city life that is just far enough to seem different but not so far its inconvenient. This place is top of it's class, in my opinion. You won't feel like you're eating in a hotel, with such superb service, perfectly prepared entrees and wonderful ambiance. There's at least one steak, seafood, lamb and chicken dish available every night. Not only are the dishes beautiful and delicious, you will also get full. Perfect date night. This was a bit of a last minute idea so we did not make reservations...no problem. Excellent table with a view. Staff was wonderful and amazingly attentive. More about them later... Drink and wine menu was not necessarily large but plenty of good choices at all price ranges. Staff very knowledgable as well. Menu is limited but more than enough choices for every taste. I much prefer this than those over the top menus that offer everything under the sun. Deconstructed Cesar salad was very good and light, great start. Chef sent over and delightful Amuse that was very tasty as well. Breads were great. For proteins both my wife and I went for fish, Scottish salmon and poached halibut. Excellent on both counts, moist and tender, seasoned great. Blue corn grits was VERY tasty. Desserts were spot on as well. Back to the staff now...they could not have done a better job. The attention to their customers throughout the restaurant was fun to watch. Always there when needed, and always with a smile. I wish more high end restaurants would follow this model. read more

Reading some of the reviews, I honestly think management took the critiques to heart and did some great changes. I've eaten at some nice restaurants (see other reviews) so I know what good service and food is. From the lobster bisque and wagu steak to the dessert, it was fantastic. Great drinks and service was great! And equally nice, the place is too pricey for families with screaming kids to dine at, usually, so it's a GREAT respite from the zoo this place turns in to in the summer. Not a bad thing (all the families), but a break from the noise is a nice change. Would be really nice if it was cooler to sit on the outside deck. Will try that out when back here in the fall. read more

WOW! I have been to many four and five star restaurants over the years and Stories stacks up with some of the best. The service was great, the atmosphere was soothing and the food was amazing! I had the filet topped with crab and an amazing sauce, potatoes and a sweet tomato salad. I would drive 2 hours to have dinner here again...what a great experience. read more

"Happy Valentine's Day sweetheart. Dinner is at 9:15." I'm not sure in what way to properly describe how much I enjoyed dinner last night. I suppose the two dozen roses my date handed me might have colored my thinking a bit, but honestly I felt like a little princess. First, the resort is amazing. At some point I'm going to save up enough pennies to spend a summer afternoon at the pool. Everything is posh and pretty and not so terribly intimidating that I drop things. Dinner was amazing. My fellow and I split an appetizer of mushroom crepes, which I followed with salmon and chocolate mousse for dessert. Everything was beautifully plated and tasted of happiness and sunshine. If I could give this place zero stars based on the rudeness and attitude of the two young girls at hostess station I would. We arrived 15 minutes early and were spoken to so rudely. There was even a comment made about closed toe shoes. WTH. This is a vacation resort. They obviously were trying to pass off the restaurant as some over the top fancy place and treated us like barefoot peasants. It took over an hour for our steaks to arrive after our appetizers so clearly our ticket was lost or something. The waiter never said anything but a gnocchi was delivered to our table at 45 minutes with a "sorry" but neither of us like cream based dishes so I would have preferred they ask us if there was something we wanted while we waited and it would have been nice to receive it at minute 25, not minute 45. My boyfriend's steak was definitely medium rare when he asked for medium but we didn't send it back as we were worried it would take another hour. $16 for 3 shrimp in a shrimp cocktail! The dessert menu is laughable with 3 items. So a 2 1/2 hour dinner that should have taken 1 1/2 and a $220 bill. Exceptional service and food!! Menu is limited because it is a classy joint, but everything we ate was phenomenal! Appetizers we had were the pork belly and crab tower- excellent! They have a house made fig jam to go along with their bread- it's a must try! We also had some amuse bouche compliments of the chef and it was tasty! My first time to try it! My filet was huge and cooked to perfection! Wine was great and our waiter Steve was so friendly and helfpul! Dessert was a red velvet cake with a coconut filling. I'm giving this five stars instead of four because given the location (which is literally in the middle of nowhere), there is no way it could be better. Having dined in many hotel restaurants over the years (ah, the joys of consulting), my expectations were admittedly fairly low. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the service was on point, the food was solid, and the prices reasonable. We sat in a huge booth in a corner, which was sort of hilarious to us and we kept making jokes about Anchorman. It was reminiscent, size wise, of the "I'll have three fingers of Glenlivet, with a little bit of pepper, and some cheese" scene. Ah hahaha! Still laughing. Next thing you know, my man Jacob shows up to inform us that he will be serving our server this evening and presents us with "our selection of waters" which literally made me want to bust out laughing because it's so hilarious. I loved it and Jacob was a good sport because I did break his balls a little bit, but he toed the line and kindly brought me some quality Texas Tap. Strong work in the bread dept too, Jacob. April was our server. She was friendly and quick to show up, and made some great recs in the "either/or" scenarios I gave her. I opted for the caesar salad as a starter, and my hubs got the mussels. The caesar was a great presentation, with spring greens (instead of the typical romaine) tucked into a rolled parmesan crisp. Really nice presentation and not "Texas sized" which frankly, is killing me after 6 months of living here. This was a starter-sized salad and it was well presented. The hubs plowed through the mussels, and I tried the sauce with some of the previously-provided Jacob bread. Really tasty. The round of drinks we ordered arrived quickly (simple order, one wine, one beer). The wine didn't have the taste that it gets after it's been open awhile, which I appreciated since downstairs in Shellers, they tried to serve me a pinot that had some miles on it (and I don't mean 'legs', I mean that sucker had been around since Duke was still active in people's March Madness brackets). Entrees were great. I opted for the sea bass with bacon-coconut rice, and my gentleman lover chose the filet which was served with crab on top and oscar sauce, potatoes and your basic asparagus. The filet was a well cut 6 oz steak, and grilled very nicely. Since it was his bday, we splurged and split the flourless chocolate torte. I could have eaten three of those myself but I can be gross like that when it comes to dense, dark chocolate. Overall, for a restaurant in the sticks, Stories knocked it out of the park. For a restaurant in Dallas, I would definitely go back again. For a hotel restaurant, it's no Ai Fiori (what is?!) but it could definitely stand on its own in a big city. In a metro area as a non-hotel resto, I would still give it a strong 4. Bottom line, well done and if you find yourself at the Hyatt resort wanting a well-served, well presented meal, you're in luck. Was not what I would consider fine dining. Our service was sub par mostly because our waiter was also the bar tender for the whole place. Took us 20 minutes just to get water and wine. Food was luke warm when served, and had little taste. Nice property, but won't be going back to this particular restaurant on the property. Very expensive for what you get.
