We went for the first time on a Saturday. I called ahead earlier in the week to make a reservation for 6 not knowing how busy they would be and glad I did. We found out there is a dress code of casual with no shorts recommended. We arrived a few minutes before the reservation time but didn't have to wait long. They actually sat us on time. We ordered the bruschetta as an appetizer. It was just enough to keep the stomach from growling. We also ordered a couple of martinis (Raspberry and Pomegranate). The pomegranate tasted better. For soup/salad, we ordered the wedge, strawberry salad, and lobster bisque. The wedge was delicious but didn't have the bacon crumbles but plenty of blue cheese. The strawberry salad was fresh and really tasty. The lobster bisque didn't have as much lobster meat as other reviewers stated and came out warm but on the cold side of warm, but otherwise was tasty. For entrees, we had the shrimp scampi, lamb chops, ribeye(s), and NY strip. The shrimp were large, fresh, and overall delicious. The lamb chops were excellent and cooked just right. The steaks came out different. One was tough and chewy, one was cooked perfectly, and one was cooked right but a bit chewy. The waitress told us they don't offer steak knives because the meat is supposed to be tender enough for a butter knife. We had to ask for a steak knife. The sides of mashed potatoes and green beans were really good and tasty. We didn't have enough room for dessert so don't know how those are. Overall the experience was great and it was an early Father's Day dinner. The waitress was helpful when ordering and attentive. Though we did feel a tad bit rushed. Going with 4 stars but really want it to be 3.5. We all had different experiences with the food but added the extra half because I'm writing the review and my steak was fantastic! read more

The good: whiskey collection. They have a great collection of some hard to find allocated whiskeys. Not so good: although the bisque was meaty and I appreciate they weren't shy with the lobster, I thought this was pumpkin soup. A DIAMOND in the rough! This place is delicious! Best steak in town for sure. I had the filet and they come with sides and I finished the veggies they were so flavorful I wanted to lick the plate - they had so much flavor. My date had the Ribeye with blue cheese and they did not skimp on the blue cheese - I felt the second time the green beans did not have the same huge burst of flavor - why? I am not sure. They are consistently out of the crème brûlée this was the second time they were out - I wish the dessert menu had key lime pie and not just the cocktail. The waiter our second time was more aware of the mocktails and gave me three mocktail options where our previous waitress only knew of one. The cherry sour mocktail was yummy!!! We also tried to scallop potatoes which were very well done finely shaved potato layers and I love that! I have yet to try a salad here we also tried the bruschetta it was perfectly bite sized I would prefer a balsamic drizzle on it. I have tried the bananas foster it deserves two scoops of ice cream and is a fun flambé - the rum overpowered it very much - it had too much liquid and not enough bites - that's ok - I tried the steakhouse salad very good nice bled lived the candied pecans and blue cheese fresh greens were not wilted or anything beautifully plated of course . Had another cocktail I love the drunken cherries and the cute lemon twist! Very crafty and pretty. They have a nice wine list and one of my favorites seven deadly Zins I have been to that winery in California - i did try the bread pudding recently too it was better then the bread pudding at old town... it had more crispness and less gooey and I prefer that. I would like it if their syrups were made in house I didn't feel like the caramel was fresh house made ... I should get a different steak next time... or try the chicken ! I have had three filets here: the best was the one topped with blue cheese and the first one it was the most perfectly cooked, the second was a bit more rare with Marsala sauce - I think the melting of the blue cheese cooked my first filet a tad more and I like it more cooked... the third filet had no toppings (I ordered them all medium rare and got a different cook every time and different temp). The third wasn't hot enough for me and was far too rare and somewhat gummy - for me rare is a texture thing I do not like the rare texture. Last week I felt like getting out of town, and made a trip to downtown Bastrop. I asked Yelp for recommendations. Walked up to a couple of places. I didn't even make it more than 5 steps inside, and turned around. I just wasn't feeling the vibe! I kept looking. FortunatelyI found this beautiful gem! From the minute I walked in, I knew it was perfect! I sat at the bar, and was greeted by the friendliest bartender. She was so knowledgeable with her cocktails. I felt like trying something a little different than my usual IPA, well I had that too (beer). Next the food arrived, perfect portions! We went to this restaurant for Valentine's Day and it was great! They had a preset menu and accommodated mine for gluten allergy (celiacs). I cannot say if it was celiac safe because I didn't feel great the next day, but I had been eating out more than usual and not sure which restaurant was the one that might have glutened me so I don't want to blame this one. However they knew what gluten free was and it was pretty effortless to get them to accommodate. I cant say the food was "amazing", but that's more of a personal preference thing (I prefer steak that's simple with no sauces... rare with salt, pepper, butter). Our first time to dine at this establishment the food and service was outstanding! Our second time to dine at this establishment while bringing other family members was below subpar to say the least. Our waitress had no earthly idea on how to treat her customers with respect. Due to her snide remarks and rude nature, it had left us feeling a very deep regret of dining there this evening. To add insult to injury our food was cold from the appetizers to the main entree's. I was extremely embarrassed to have brought the family members with us. Just two comments today. 1) When we have guests and we want a special dinner in town, or my spouse and I really want to treat ourselves without driving into Austin, this is without question our go-to place. There's nothing else like this in Bastrop. 2) We would keep coming back even if there was nothing more on the menu than their New Zealand Double Lamb Chops (along with their amazing sides and nice wines). My husband and I wanted to try a new place in Bastrop and we decided on Piney Creek. My husband called first to see if we need reservations as most places are starting to require that which is fine with us. We were told they take walk ins so we headed out. We arrived and right off the bat, hostess says in a rude way we don't have any tables and my husband says we called. We immediately get seated by the bar. We were confused as to why she said that and then seats us but okayyy. Waitress comes and gets our drink order right away. I was not in mood to drink wine so just had water. After we get our water, we put in order for appetizers(stuffed mushrooms) and our entrees. At the same time there was another table putting in their order with another waitress..they stood out to me because they were sitting on the couch. Anyway...they got their order AND finished their meals - we still have not gotten our entrees. We only got the appetizer that came after 15 minutes. Our waitress came only once to fill my husband's water and never saw her again. After waiting 45 minutes after getting appetizer...I was done waiting and asked for the check. We ordered chicken Marsala and salmon...pretty simple and should not take 45 minutes. We just paid for the appetizer and left. Not impressed with the service. Manager saw we were not happy with service and not once approached us. I was looking right at her - she saw me looking at her and she ran off to kitchen. Not sure why they singled us out because everyone else got amazing service and I think my husband and I were very polite to our waitress even after paying for the check. Great atmosphere for a quiet dinner in a small quaint place. Our family ordered salads and entrees and each of us got something different. The Wedge and Cesar salads were pretty typical and not bad. The spinach strawberry salad is perfect if you like lots of raspberry vinaigrette. I personally thought it was too much dressing making it too sweet but others might like it that way. I would probably order dressing on the side next time. The spinach and strawberries were fresh and crisp. I got the broiled salmon. It doesn't have as much flavoring by itself but with the crab, capers and shrimp sauce, it gave it the flavor it needed. The seasoning on the medium rare NY Strip was perfect but felt the meat was tough to chew. The medium rare filet mignon tenderness was perfect but didn't have enough flavoring on it. Maybe adding one of the toppings like blue cheese would help but a perfect filet only needs salt and pepper for it to be delicious. They ran out of baked potatoes so we stuck with the sides it came with- mashed potatoes and haricot verts. Both had good flavoring. Our server was pleasant but it does take a long time for the food to come. Even though we ordered salads, if you are really hungry, I would order an appetizer. I think a nice addition for them if the kitchen continues to be slow is to offer little loaves of bread or rolls to munch on while you are waiting for the food. That would prevent the "hangry" feelings from kicking in. It was a nice place for dinner but not really anything impressive that stood out from the evening either. Last thing- this is for people making reservations there. It is a small place with not a lot of tables. If you are a large party and make a reservation, please show up. Our poor server had a party of 9 not show up which took up several tables that she could have been servicing. This was the second time my wife and I dined here. The first time, it was excellent, this time just ok. The service was excellent, the staff were extremely attentive. I asked for a Cabernet selection, which was provided, and after ordering the wine, the server came back and said they were out. Went with their second suggestion, Serial. Unfortunately, the wine wasn't that good however I did drink it. I ordered the 12 oz Ribeye "medium" and the steak was cooked well done, no pink at all. The term hidden gem doesn't even begin to cover this place. I recently ate here for a special occasion and it absolutely exceeded my expectations. Parking was the only slight challenge. It's in a small town right in the "main drag" so you may have to park a street or two over. The interior of the restaurant was very nice and clean. The lighting is low without being too low and the decor is simple but pleasant. It's definitely what you would expect out of a high quality chop house/steak house. The restroom is shared with a bar next door but the doors keep out any of the noise from next door. I didn't catch the name of the young man who was our waiter for the evening but he was excellent. The staff recommendations on food and drink were on point. My sister ordered a soda and the waiter told her that the syrup in the machine had been low but they already changed it and that he was ready to get her a new drink if it tasted slightly off. We really waited for nothing our entire meal. Water was refilled pretty much the second it was empty and our waiter was immediately there for anything we needed. I honestly can't give enough praise to the guy! As far as the food goes we did the bacon wrapped scallops which were quite tasty. My wife had the lobster bisque which was delightful especially with the house bread. For our entrees I had the Porterhouse steak with mushrooms. I'm normally the person to take home a doggy bag at almost any restaurant, but my steak was so delicious I wrestled down that whole 24 oz monster and loved every second of it. The seasoning was perfect and peppery. I ordered my steak medium rare which is a difficult cook to get an a porterhouse (two different cuts) but my steak was perfect throughout. All the fat had been rendered and underneath the crust the steak was butter knife tender. The garlic mashed potatoes were also addictively good. I'm not a fan of green beans in general but theirs were a solid attempt. We ordered the crème brûlée for dessert and it was heavenly. The custard was well set and smooth. As far as the price goes I will say it was expensive! If you're looking for a cheap place to eat this restaurant should be far from your mind. Reasonably you're looking at 50-60 dollars are person on the lower end. If you're looking for a really nice special occasion restaurant this place is 100% worth the price. I haven't had a steak that good in years and the great service really sold this whole place. I live about two hours away but if anyone asked me to go again I would in a heartbeat! My wife and her out-of-town sister arrived at 5:30 pm for the advertised $5-house, happy-hour Martinis before dinner. They were told the bar was "closed for a party", the wait was less than 30-minutes, and to go next door to their sports bar (which shares the same kitchen). At 6:45 pm my wife goes to ask, what's up and sees no bar party and table still not available. Finally, at 7:05, happy hour is over and voila, miraculously everything is open! This will be somewhat long so stay with me. I first made my reservation a week before the intended date. I called the day of my reservation 2/16/25 to confirm and was told I couldn't be found on the reservation list. I reaffirmed I called a week ago to make the reservation and they said they could work my party of two in when I come in at 6. We get there around 550 and the place is pretty empty, we are sat at one of the tables next to the bar at the front of the building where another couple is sitting and being served. It took about 15-20 minutes before the bartender approached asking if we had been served. We told her no and she mentioned something about the other waitress (serving the couple next to us) missed us. This is even after the same waitress walked by a couple of times. The other couples were tended to by the other staff and the bartender ended up making drinks and serving us. I don't want to take away from her (the bartender) because she was very attentive after she saw we hadn't been served. But we couldn't help but feel we were ignored and treated differently. This isn't our first time here, but this time it was more obvious based on their actions. The food was good as it had been previously. the mood was set for Valentine's day, but the horrible service and the atmosphere it created made everything feel less than. read more

I've eaten many steaks all over the world and I just had one of the best filets I've ever had here. Perfectly cooked medium rare and it was amazingly tender even for a filet. Nice mixed drinks and generous pour on house Chardonnay. Really nice and attentive staff. They need to work on a few things, put up some Bastrop themed big format photos on the wall in the back room or something.I kinda felt like I was at the Holiday Inn conference room for what was a $275 meal for 3. Sides weren't any better, mashed potatoes were old and dry like they have been sitting for a while. The dessert was all flash and resembled dirty water with bananas in it. I felt they didn't really care about their service, when the waitress went to check on us we told her we were done with all the food, there was more than half a steak, 3 whole lamb chops left and didn't even touch the dessert. Met friends here for dinner in April. They travel to the area once a year for activities at COTA, and they love to eat here. We had never been. Our friends said we had to get the steaks, and so we did. What steak you get doesn't matter; they are all $40. They come with green beans and mashed potatoes. Our friends ordered Au Gratin potatoes instead of the mashed potatoes. For dessert, we also ordered Banana Foster. Our server Diane was ok. She did tell us she had a large table in the back, and we were really there to visit with our friends. However, two of the steaks came out cooked incorrectly. I didn't have a knife at my place setting, and I had to wait a bit for one. I started using my husband's so my food didn't get cold. We could have used a refresher on our wine, but she had yet to come by to see how we were doing. When we ordered dessert, we also ordered coffee. Deserts showed up, and no coffee ever showed up. When we asked, she said she had made it but had forgotten to bring it. She offered to bring it but we were done with desert. We got the bill, and we had five steaks plus coffee on the bill. Only four of us, and as I have already mentioned, no coffee. She gave us some excuse about having to put new orders in for the steaks when they came out incorrectly, which makes no sense to me as we sent back two steaks. The food was fine. I wasn't blown away by my steak. It was good but not good enough for me to do the drive for it. The place was packed; if I understand, you must have a reservation. It shares bathrooms with a bar next door. We could hear each other speak, so it was not loud in the restaurant. I am sure I had been in the building before but it was a different steak house. I am sure we will come back to visit our friends at least once a year. We hope the servers are more attentive next time. read more

The GM that runs Old Town Restaurant and Bar also runs Piney Creek. There is actually a pass-through door between the two places. The food is quite good and priced accordingly. We had a shrimp cocktail, bacon-wrapped filet, New York strip, two house salads, two teas and one bread pudding. Total = ~$130 before tip. The meat is quite good. The bread pudding is served warm and is exceptional. Not everyone likes bread pudding, but this is really good. Hard to fathom that the same GM didn't let us sing while in Old Town. Ha, ha. Who turns away 4 people walking in to celebrate two birthdays for wonderful lovely ladies when the bartop is completely open? This place. Now I've heard in Russia they cater to their own types, but we still live in a free society... for now. Right? Now, I put myself through college bartending (and the GI Bill). And I don't need a veteran status nor the memories it took to get me to where I am to have some respect for the moment we wish to give our lovely wives on their special day - at a bartop. What I do want though is respect - as a customer (and an American). And when you don't respect me, nor my wallet, you lose my business. Because if you don't respect my presence, then you will surely know my absence. To all the thousands of people moving to Bastrop, Texas... I say: watch out for this place. This place only caters to their own type of folk (conservatives). Your taste in food might mean something, but service (and voting with your wallet)... trumps the meal you only enjoy for the moment. The dining experience itself should mean something to your wallet, and your spirit. The memories are important. And Chophouse couldn't deliver because the bartender working on 12/19/2024 simply didn't want to serve us because she couldn't handle us - with zero people sitting at her bartop. Sad AF. This place has always had issues (no bar back), poor leadership, and a pricey menu (for what you get). But this experience here takes the cake. We were turned away at the reception stand - because the bartender said so. Went there for dinner this weekend. Was really excited for an exceptional meal! Meh. We were seated right away (had a reservation), but everything was slow as molasses after that (including drinks). We all ordered steaks. All required a steak knife (which they insist you will not need -- you will). The porterhouse that was ordered rare was delivered well done. It was sent back, but its replacement wasn't received until everyone had finished eating and we were ready to go. Ordered a side of brussels sprouts.....there was -- I kid you not -- ONE sprout in the dish, and the rest was roasted leaves. Obviously late in the night and they scraped the pan.....but that was a $10 brussels sprout!! Waitress was very cordial but inexperienced -- tried to remove a wine glass that still had wine in it, and took the last of our brussels sprouts leaves before we could finish them (ha!). I've been coming to this place for dinner for probably 7 years now. Special occasions and work dinners have made it a staple for us. Their food and staff are absolutely top notch.
