We did the pirate shipwreck room. It was dark and we used flashlights, which added an extra immersive element to it. I don't want to say too much and give anything away, but we ended up solving it with 10 minutes to spare! They have a few different rooms, and I'd highly recommend it. Leave some time for parking so you aren't late. There is some street parking, and there's also a lot about a block down. It cost $3 to cover that length of time.

As far as the room itself, if you Google, "what makes an escape room bad," you'll see a lot of it in this room. For example, some of the puzzles require subjective guessing rather than structured, deductive reasoning. One puzzle required entering a code by figuring out which 3 icons had to be entered in proper order. But, to figure out which icons, there were no clues about the icons themselves. You just had to start clicking on the icons to see if they were part of the sequence or not. So it was just click each icon randomly until the computer acknowledged it. Not really deductive. There was also a puzzle where we figured out the answer but couldn't find the lock. I don't want to give too much away but as someone who tries not to damage the hardware, the placement of the lock was awkward. Some the puzzles are also very linear in structure and forces everyone to stop so that one person does the puzzle. Not great with a group. And then, to top it off, the final puzzle has both a tedious time sink and a mechanical piece that didn't work well. I've been in challenging rooms but the solutions would have cool aha moments. Here, the clues and subsequent solutions would yield groans for the whole group. Some of the puzzles were neat but so many of them were just not well designed.

EDIT: after sharing this review I was personally contacted by the GM of Escapology. They apologized…read morefor the treatment and offered the walk-in discount, in addition to a discount should we ever return. The e-mails continued even beyond normal business hours to ensure we walked away as satisfied customers. The refund was returned the very next day. Even with the way things went on the premises in person, we are more than satisfied with their effort to make it right. Thank you, Escapology. We called on a Monday afternoon to inquire about availability, we were told they had openings and she would take our info over the phone and charge us for one person to hold a spot for us as we were twenty minutes away. When we asked about parking, the person on the phone instructed us that there was a parking garage on Cortez St, but she failed to mention that we could get parking validated by them for $15 and not have to pay the $21 parking fee. We only learned about the parking validation from the sign on the entry desk after we had already paid for parking in the garage around the block and we weren't going back down there to haggle for the $6 savings. There is also a sign as you enter the building that says to ask about the walk in discount. We asked about the discount four separate times, as we had two people paying for families, and each time Myesa ignored the question. It wasn't until she was asking for my payment that I stated she was ignoring our question and she told us we couldn't get the walk in discount because we called first. We asked how much the discount would have been and she said 20%, so with our group total of $280 that would have saved us $56 dollars. Note: it doesn't have any terms or conditions for the discount listed on the sign. After we stated it would have been nice to know that on the phone as well, Myesa was a bit smug, but showed us to our room. There are no bathrooms for paying customers, you must go downstairs one level to use the public restroom. For the price you pay at this location, which is the most expensive escape room we've ever done, for not any better quality or courteous staff, we won't be returning. The only bonus about this escape room is that it is right on the beach and close to many other restaurants and things to see and do. Find another escape room where they actually care about the customer.

We really enjoyed some of the unique puzzles that are included in the games throughout this entire company. Cons: I will forever bring down a star because these are technically shared experience so if someone books the same time as you, you're stuck with a stranger and I despise that. And the fee to reserve the whole room is insane. There's a reason almost every other escape room doesn't have this anymore and it's much smarter. I would never book one of these rooms in advance because of the risk of getting stuck with someone. The other thing I didn't like was the one employee that was at the front desk. He was not very friendly and not helpful. All other staff members were fantastic. Gold rush: there were a few glitches in the room. There's a shooting part which is really hard because the things you need to shoot at are slightly to heavy for the "ammo" you're using making it insanely hard to get them to move properly. Also there was not anywhere near enough water in a different take to get it to work properly. However everything else was great. Timeliener: no negatives. I like everything about it. Overall I will always recommend this company and their rooms nationwide (as long as I'm never stuck with random people in a shared room).

The pricing was quite affordable and it was an easy Friday night outing before some drinks in the neighborhood. Once we entered the room, our host gave us the rundown of how the challenge worked and the outline of how the puzzles worked in efforts to secure our escape within an hour. We started off in one corner as we made our way around the room solving each puzzle with their appropriate clues earning a piece from each used to solve the final puzzle to obtain the key to exit. It was pretty engaging to use our minds together to solve each step as we laughed through half of the time throughout our hour in the room. I had a great time and recommend it to those looking to celebrate a birthday, throw an office party, or look to get together with plenty of friends for an alternative form of fun. I got a tour of the other rooms designated for larger parties with increased difficulty just to have a visual for ideas for future outings. The staff was super nice and accommodating so it's a perfect spot for friends and family to unite and have a night of fun in a very collaborative way.

The lady working the front was so nice and gave a nice detailed explanation of how the rooms work and the hints and time limit and after she shut the door, the escape room began. The design and theme of the Indiana Jones style room we did was amazing and having to go from room to room to find more clues was a ton of fun. We beat the room with two minutes to spare and it was such a thrill! I also really enjoy that the room is private regardless of how many people are in your party!

It was such an interesting and creative game it really made us think, communicate, and work together to solve puzzles and try different ideas to see what worked.
