We came one weekday morning for the "Mad Hatter Tea" (a prix-fixe menu) and received excellent service throughout our visit. A glass of champagne and a choice of tea started things off. The tea flavor choices were few but each was exquisite. I made sure to point my pinky finger while sipping my tea. Soon a tower of delightful eats was brought to the table. Finger sandwiches, pastries, and fruit were all delicious. The restaurant also has a standard menu and dining area. I'm so happy about this change of theme at Story! It used to be Toast Kitchen previously, and now Story brings in a cool Alice in Wonderland theme. There's books, props, and the hats sprinkled throughout the restaurant. They have happy hour from 4pm-6pm, where they offer great small bites to eat and signature cocktails and wine. I also love that they offer Mad Hatter's high-tea experience for the afternoon. For dinner, they offer a Great Gatsby-themed experience. I definitely want to go back to try out those experiences! Staff here were so friendly, attentive, and wonderful. They made sure our waters were always filled, food was good, and that we were all happy with our dining experience. Been here twice and both visits were winners. First time I brought my sister-in-law for brunch. Plenty of options and the portions are generous. I got the chilaquiles (pretty good) and she loved her chile verde. Second visit was just a few weeks ago for my birthday with a friend who wanted the Mad Hatter experience. We had a slightly rocky start after we were seated, but the team quickly made it right. The rest of the afternoon was pure delight with gorgeous asthethic and gossip lol. My friends ordered a simple breakfast and the short rib chilaquiles. Everything tasted yummy and looked very yummy. Walking into Story and my first impression was, as Benson Boone says, "..mystical, magical." Beautiful interior. Ample parking. Solid menu offerings. Fair to good service (depending on the server, I had the pleasure of meeting 2 on my visit). Spacious. Centrally located on the Boulevard as a prime meeting spot for large groups. The interior is so beautiful that any shortcomings almost take a back seat to the stunning interior. It's also so nice to see patrons consisting of couples, families, and those celebrating milestone gatherings. The restaurant garners a higher rating from me because of the overall dining experience and theatrics of their service combined with atmosphere, but also to note: Pricing listed on the regular menu is steep for the food quality. Happy Hour pricing is helpful in this regard. The Mediterranean salad was just ok, as were the buffalo wings. Wings were your standard fare (not flashed fried) and very crunchy. The salad sadly was soaked in dressing, I should have ordered it dry, so that was on me. Chicken and Waffles were super rich. The crostini was very tasty as was the banana dessert. I was overcharged for the crostini (happy hour vs. regular menu pricing) but the waitress did take care of it quickly. All this to say, this venue is a perfect place for celebratory occasions but don't expect the entrees to be the stars of the show, especially if you're dining with a food snob. I did not see the origins of some of the meat or fish dishes listed on the menu but then again our family are sticklers for locally sourced ingredients and prefer premium meats. Wine list is solid. Non-alcoholic drink options were magical and tasty. I enjoyed my experience but will return with the knowledge from my prior visit which will make for a stellar dining experience next time. Finally booked a reservation for tea time here. My daughter, girlfriend and I had a delightful experience. Tea time is offered only on the weekdays . It's $40 a person ( plus tax and gratuity). The restaurant dedicated a section for tea time and the rest for lunch service. The servers were friendly and came around often to check if we needed anything and to fill our teapot. They got the chicken & waffles and let me have some - its a mini waffle and a fat tender, you get 4 of them with bacon jam - and they were very good. Savory and sweet and i think because it was a mini waffle you had a better ratio. I got the steak breakfast burrito and it was huge and also delicious. Did not reinvent the wheel or anything it was just a solid burrito. I also had the prickly pear mimosa - that was definitely a highlight because it was beautiful and sweet. Made a reservation on OpenTable for 3pm not realizing that the mad hatter tea time ended at 3pm ‍. But the staff was so accommodating and so nice about it and didn't make us feel bad for making the wrong reservation time. The hostess and our waiter were awesome! And of course the kitchen staff for the delicious food. Parking was plentiful as well at the time we went. The Mad Hatter tea is $40 and come with so many pastries and sandwiches that left us all stuffed and happy. My faves were the cucumber sandwiches, apple butter, chicken sandwich, egg bites, and pastries. I ordered the jasmine green tea as well. The champagne on its own was drier but the little drink me bottle with simple syrup helped make it a little sweeter. For what you pay and what you get I really think it's an affordable amount compared to other tea places I've seen. This place makes for a great date night or if you're celebrating something special. Tried Story in Whittier and had a bit of a mixed experience, though the ambiance is lovely and a clear upgrade from the previous Toast. The rib eye chilaquiles were the standout--absolutely delicious. Everything was well balanced, with the right amount of pickled onions, queso, tender rib eye, and high-quality eggs (I believe they use Vital Farms eggs). The chips were nicely coated in a smoky chipotle salsa that added great depth without overpowering the dish. Unfortunately, the chicken and waffles fell short. The waffles were undercooked, with a mushy interior that detracted from the dish, and the onion bacon jam tasted overly bourbony and bitter, as if the alcohol hadn't been cooked off properly. The coffee drinks were also underwhelming. Both the rose latte and the abuela latte lacked flavor and didn't live up to expectations based on the menu. We came here for Mother's Day brunch and had such a great experience overall. This spot did a nice job with the setup. There was a long table in the middle of the restaurant to accommodate our large party and it felt thoughtful for the occasion right from the start. Just had brunch here for the first time. First off, the decor to this place completely stands out. It's a part of the establishment and you go in very much feeling like you're a part of it also. I absolutely LOVED my first time at "Story Whittier." I made reservations for me, my mom, and my aunt 10am, which appeared to be the perfect time. The waitress was exceptional! My sister found this cool breakfast spot in Whittier. As a former library employee anything that looks like a reading room I instantly have a fondness for. The dark walks and books everywhere make for a beautiful space for a meal. My sister and I were sat in a pink booth that was so comfortable. I ordered the scarlet sip a strawberry peach lime cocktail to start, and the strawberry shortcake waffles for breakfast. My food exceeded my expectations. I went to Story for their Mad Hatter tea party, and while the food was a bit hit or miss--I'd give it about a 3--the ambiance was really enchanting. The dark walls, teal booths, and overall vibe made the whole place feel magical - an added star! They offered a variety of sandwiches including chicken salad, egg salad (my favorite of the 4), cucumber and cream cheese, and ham and Dijon. The ham and Dijon was probably my least favorite since I didn't really taste much Dijon and it seemed more like ham with mayo, which I'm not a big fan of. My favorite bite was actually a small skewer that had a mozzarella ball with mint and a few other ingredients. It was fresh and really flavorful. The biscuit with what tasted like honey butter was also really good. For tea, I chose the mango peach tea with a splash of milk, which I enjoyed. One small tip: the water in the kettle cooled down pretty quickly, so you might want to ask for it to be reheated after a couple cups. Service was good and our server was very nice. The price was $40 per person, which felt a little high for the food--I think $35 would have felt more reasonable. The short rib plate is to die for, but you must have a large appetite because they do give you plenty of food. The salmon was outstanding. My only complaint is the seating. I wish I would've known that we would be sitting on a bench couch against the wall with additional tables, and additional people. It was quite uncomfortable because we were looking for something a little more intimate. If they would just move one table and leave a little more room in between it might be acceptable. The steak chilaquiles were exceptional--perfectly cooked eggs, well-textured chips, and, most notably, steak that was flavorful and expertly prepared. The pork belly lettuce wraps, ordered as a starter, fell short of expectations and did not set the tone one would anticipate from an otherwise strong menu. Upon arrival around 2:00 PM, I confirmed with the front desk that the establishment was still open for service and was assured that it was. However, at approximately 2:58 PM, I was informed by my server that no additional food or drink orders could be placed due to an impending 3:00 PM closing time. While closing procedures are understandable, the timing and communication could have been handled more thoughtfully. A clearer heads-up upon arrival would have better aligned expectations and allowed for a more seamless dining experience. Additionally, accommodating a simple final drink order within that window would have demonstrated a higher level of hospitality. In summary, the kitchen shows undeniable talent, but the service experience left room for improvement. With better communication and consistency, this establishment has the potential to fully match its culinary excellence.
