I tried to go shopping at Stracks the other day and was kindly TOLD that I MUST take a cart. She said this is how they keep track of how many people are in the store. Huh? Other stores count. I needed two small items and had no use for a cart. And I certainly don't want to touch a cart that has been used by thousands of people. Do they really think spraying the hand bar with some lysol really sanitizes? It seems to me Stracks is adding to the problem rather than solving it. Recently had a bad experience with a local flower shop. I came to this location to pick up a replacement arangement, and Taylor in the floral department was amazing! I got there a few minutes before her shift ended (yes, I was one od THOSE customers) and she still went above and beyond to make a beautiful arangement. Two nights ago, I bought a carton of coconut milk that did not taste right. Yesterday, I did not have the time to take it back, so I took it back today. I had the receipt with me and I was literally just looking for an exchange of something different within the same pricing. (Carton was literally full - I had not even drank a full glass of it). I spoke to one manager and simply asked if I could do an exchange (all of $4 as it came out of your organic section), but $4 is a lot for someone who is pinching pennies right now, which is why I took it back and asked to get something different. The manager did not want to handle it, so she called over "Tom Daizido" (not sure of that last name and spelling, but it at least tells you who we're talking about). Instead of hearing me out, he immediately put on a defense and jumped to conclusions - adamantly stating that they don't take Covid returns right now and this was not an option. I tried to explain that I simply wanted to exchange it for something different (thereby, keeping the money in the store), and he cut me off - not even giving me a chance to talk... I felt as though he was arguing with me when I had not even started to argue. To be real - I work in retail. I am also a GM of a local store myself. I just happen to literally live around the corner from this store, which is why I sometimes pop in to grab groceries... I have also worked in various other aspects of retail, including ten years at the mecca of hospitality, Walt Disney World / Florida side. Tom's behavior toward me tonight over a $4 item was completely unacceptable. Are you seriously telling me that you won't even let a customer exchange an item for something different within the same price range and receipt in hand? You would have done it for any other opened item prior to 2020. There's no difference if the money stays within the store. (Again, I work in retail - here in the local area no less... and we do take returns and exchanges so I'm not one bit buying that story that you couldn't at least allow me to exchange it for a different item of the same value with a receipt present). I literally live right around the corner from this store (right behind the walmart), but that also means I live right around the corner from Aldis too (right down the road from Strack). I'm not saying I won't ever pop in to grab something small again, but I definitely won't be doing my shopping there anymore... I went to Aldi after this and found the exact item I needed (Almond milk) for $2.39. I'm sold. Why would I continue to take my money to a store that can't even handle a simple exchange for $4 - all the while also handing me a less than classy and professional way of handling the entire situation. I sure wouldn't want a manager like that on my team. I'd love to know that Strack's will be looking into this manager and his style of "management". Thank heavens this is not an acceptable behavior with the company I work for... I wouldn't want to work for a manager like that, much less have to deal with one like that as a customer. Wow. I thought Strack's was more upscale than to be hiring managers like that. ALSO - be sure to check any produce you buy. Check the dates and check for mold!! Numerous complaints about this - not just mine. (The other night, I was trying to buy some strawberries for Christmas day and could not find one package that didn't have an issue - several had complete science projects growing inside with mold). read more

To Whom it may concern: I shop at this store on a regular basis. However, my complain is with the Deli and more so the catering. The reason I continue to use the Schererville, IN cater for the Holidays mainly .Is the food is always fresh and taste great. However, the staff is absolutely bad and very unorganized. Especially, one staff member "Ann Marie" and it seems that when, I call I always get her on the phone to take my order. First of all I always have to watch 10 minutes for someone from the deli department to answer the phone and when they do answer. it is like I am, bothering them on their day off or something. I have been a Stracks shopper for 30 years. Lately since the re-model prices have skyrocketed and service has declined. Try a little trip to the deli...guaranteed half hour wait in line. Today I went to the deli to get a pound of ham for my mom. I went to the deli and got a number and somehow still got skipped and taken care of after people who had gotten there after I did. Then when my number is finally called by carol, all I asked for was some ham shaved. I do not feel that as a customer I was anything but courteous however she had done at least a good portion of my ham without showing me and it was too thick so I said something nicely and apologized and she seemed beyond exasperated. I believe that I was treated this way, in part because I am young. However, I am still a paying customer and should not feel that giving MY money to YOUR business should cause this much annoyance and was not very happy with my experience today. read more

I've shopped at SVT for many years, and since the renovation in Schererville I have become very disenchanted with this store. It appears they're trying to compete with Whole Foods......not gonna happen. Since the renovation I've noticed increased prices. Last week I wanted to pick up some deli ham. Rather than wait in a long line I decided to pick some of the fresh cut ham from the cooler directly across from the deli. I believe they call it "pick up and go" or something similar. The ham must have been sitting there a while as it had turned from that appetizing pink to white and not very appetizing. I believe this store has lost touch with it's customers. Interesting experience at the newly remodeled Strack & Vantil. ON January 3, 2016 I purchased three fried chicken breasts at the Delli Department. When my wife and I were eating, she thought she bit into a chicken bone, but low and behold it was a nail with a portion broken off. The next day, I went to the store and the Assistant Manager, Mr. Bonner (Sp.?) came to meet with me. I said do you wnat the good news or the bad news and he said whichever I wanted. I told him the good news was that my wife did nto swallow or damage a tooth or get a cut, but that the bad news was that the nail was cooked in one of the chicken breasts. I gave him the nail. He said he did not know how this could happen and oofered to give me 3 chicken breasts ($5.97 value), but I was on my way out of town and my wife was having a party. He said they would give me 3 breasts another time, but he did not bother to take my name or any other information. He did not give me acrd and seemed happy just to get me out of the store. I have taught human resources and guest services courses and his handlingm of this matter was less than appropiate. I would have at least thought he would say that he would investigate the mattter, instruct and train his staff and make sure something like this would not happen again. Very Upset customer, Called Deli on Saturday , November 23 in the evening, spoke with a young man in the deli, inquiring about their prepared Turkey dinners for ordering. The employee stated I had time and could come in on November 24th to place my order. When I called on November 24th, they were currently not taking anymore orders for prepared dinners. This USED to be the best grocery store around with friendly staff, great service and a really friendly feel. But due to what must have been pressure to compete with the new Whole Foods, they have become a cold, corporate place. The employees are miserable (I know many of them from the years of shopping there) and the entire place has a decidedly different feel to it. I constantly see men in suits taking photos of the inside so I would guess that they are proud of the changes but as for the consumer? I see nothing that has improved our experience. My wife and/or I would run to Strack's 4 or 5 times a week. We now drive out of our way to avoid it. When we do go, my wife will repeat, "I hate this place" so many times that I don't want to return. This location I was told was remodeled, which I must say looks very nice. I saw it today and rushed in to pick up a few much needed small desserts. I'd also heard about a great wine selection and since I was looking for that too, I decided to stop by so I didn't have to travel another 15 miles to a Super Target. When I entered, the associate in the entrance, whom I assume was a greeter, was very friendly. Other than that, the other employees are very cold. Initially, I thought it was isolated and then every other person after that, was the exact same way. Their deli selections and hot food items were displayed so I stopped to ask a question. The guys came from the back, looked at me and kept walking. No one else asked if I needed help either. So, even though I really needed the items, I put everything back and decided it was best to leave. The overall remodel looks really well so that's my only reason for the two stars. Not asking for a bedtime story or fuzzy slipper experience but the subliminal "you are not welcome" vibe is palpable. read more

Just an average store. They have sales quite often so prices are reasonable. Their produce and meat is good. But their deli is not always fresh. You have to get there early for fresh lunch meat. Shopped in the store Sunday, August 19th 2PM. Nicked my hand somehow while shopping and noticed that I was bleeding slightly as I approached the check out. I loaded my groceries on the belt and let a lady behind me go ahead of me because she had only a couple of items. Judy P., the CSM at the checkout was deep in a conversation with the current customer and in NO hurry to finish. Even the lady that I let go in front of me was shaking her head and just had to laugh. Finally, when my turn came I saw a roll of paper towels near her register and asked "May I have a piece of your paper towel when you get a second" exactly. So she shakes her head no. WHAT?????? They have the rudest people working in that store. The thing is, this is exactly what separates Whole Foods from Strack and Van Til. The employees at Whole Foods are ALWAYS polite and literally stop what they are doing and go out of their way to help. I am going back to Whole Foods. read more

Shopping in the new store takes some getting used to, it's so big and has so much. However, my husband and I miss the little "scratch and dent' corner that used to be opposite the restrooms.
