Seems like a lot of younger folks love the more "nightclub" scene later at night, so maybe that is their specialty. Good: -Roti with curry sauce was good. Curry sauce does have a little heat, which was a good amount for us. -Our server was nice and attentive. Misses: -Crispy chicken lollipops: no wow factor, outside felt "bready". -Dry fried eggplant: while flavor was decent, it was way too sauced so it was really globby and salty. -Wok fried rice noodles: also overly sauced. Lacked something to the flavor. -Lemongrass beef: tasted more like teriyaki beef. Almost $50 for this? Fries were good though. -Out of 2 different types of beer that were listed on the menu. Straits is located in Ward at the former Big City Diner location. They remodeled the space with modern design and classy ambience. We tried this place during off dinner hours at 4:00pm right when they are opened. We didn't make reservations and the place was packed right at opening time. The manager was kind enough to offer us a table as long as we finish before 5:00pm which was another party reserved time. It was totally fine with us since we already know what we wanted to order and we usually eat quickly. Roti prata: The roti was not bad. It was little thicker than what we have tried at other places. The middle is a little doughy. The coconut curry sauce was pretty good. It goes well with the roti. Origami butterfish: The butterfish was moist and delicious. The toppings help add additional flavors. We wished that there were more of the ikura as the topping. Garlic noodles: The garlic noodles were flavorful but heavy on the butter. There was a garlicky taste but the buttery flavor overpowering. Spicy street noodles: The spicy noodles tasted like Pad Thai which wasn't bad but it was more on the sweeter side than spicy. Appetizers: roti (nice kick in the curry dipping sauce but little bread imo) $12, crispy chicken lollipops (came with 4 and this was my favorite since it came out steaming hot and crispy with a nice sweet and spicy kick) $16 and Satay sticks (came with 5) $16. The newest hip and trendy place in Kaka'ako catering towards the younger crowd. There's also bottle service which you could inquire about. Seems popular for a GNO and large parties who want to get dressed up. After 8pm the place turns more into a club with a DJ playing music. There's also a lot of flashing lights when they do bottle service. Female servers are young, wearing tight dresses/heels showing cleavage. We mainly came for the food and drinks and it was an overall decent experience. Ambiance was dimly lit, loud, and lively. Our server Jordan was friendly and down to earth. -My favorite of the dishes was actually the Beef Rendang ($29) - this has the most flavor in my opinion. Very tender beef in a kaffir lime curry. Offers an interesting twist on a classic since they give a pandan polenta underneath giving the dish a bright attractive look. -Straits Frites ($15)- basically a fancy way of saying plate of fries. They were crispy and good. The kaffir lime aioli was tasty! Also came with galangal cocktail sauce but wasn't a fan. -The Signature Dish - Hainan Chicken ($28) was decent, but not impressive. The aromatic broth was overly salty and didn't complement the dish well. 3 sauces helped give the chicken some flavor though. -The Satay Sticks ($18) were below average as it was overcooked and the sauce was bland. Cocktails: We tried Milk & Honey, Sunday Afternoon, Sir Raffles. They all had a unique flavor that you wouldn't find anywhere else in Hawaii. Tasty but they were not very strong though. Finally got to see for myself what all the buzz has been about at this popular new Singaporean restaurant under the Ward Theaters. Be sure to make a reservation although it's possible to walk in and sit in the lounge. There is a 90 min time limit in the dining room so try to be on time. 5 stars for food which is a welcome new addition to Honolulu's dining scene. We had the Hainan chicken their signature dish. It comes with sweet soy, ginger garlic, and tangy hainan sauce which were all good. The rice had a subtle but nice consistency and flavor. The only thing I didn't like about it was the soup that accompanied it. I was surprised and dismayed that it reminded me of Lipton. We also got the crab garlic noodles as recommended by our server Min which allowed us to have both crab and noodles in one dish. I loved the flavorful garlicky goodness on the outside! But I must say that given the choice crab curry is still my favorite. For a cocktail I had the Purple Rain, a whiskey based drink with egg whites and blackberries, which was good in both looks and taste. 4 stars for furnishings (but I'll round up overall). I thought the decor with a tropical neon theme was fun but my friend thought it should have been more classy. We agreed that for the price point the tables and chairs could have been more plush and comfy. Also the tables are close together so it's a bit noisy. But I guess this hum from the constant flow of customers also contributes to the fun vibe and energy of the place. We were informed that the music would start after 8:00 at which point the lounge would turn into more of a club. I read a lot of good comments (good services and good food) about this restaurant and wanted to bring my best friend for her birthday dinner. Unfortunately, I made a wrong decision. I made the reservation 2 weeks ahead. By the time I arrived the restaurant at 5:50pm, the host assigned us to the lounge area but actually there're some empty tables available. The hostess was pretty nice and reassigned us to the table which facing the kitchen. The design and atmosphere of the restaurant was pretty good. After the hostess escorted us to the table, we have been waiting for more than 15 mins and felt like we're just ignored by everybody. We called a guy for only the iced water and asked him where's our server. He was gone after he dropped off 3 glasses of water on our table without any follow up. Waited for another 10 mins but still nobody came to our table for taking the order. I saw a gentlemen who looks like a manager and asked who and where was my server. Afterward, he looked at his iPad and questioned the servers who was handle my table. I was really pissed by that time. Waited another 5 mins and finally a lady (I didn't asked for her name but she has a long and gold color highlighted hair) came to take our order. We ordered 6 items on the menu but wanted to add 2 more items in the middle of our dinner. I was looking at my server but she was just standing on the side and chit chatting to another server. Waited for another 10 mins for her to notice I'm calling her. IT'S JUST A HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICES. It's so hard to find my server during the entire dinner. It took a while for me to ask for a check as well. I WILL NOT recommend this restaurant to my friends. Lastly, I asked for the complimentary birthday dessert when I made the reservation and I confirmed it the day before my visited. Ended up they missed my request. Definitely one of those hyped places with great marketing and help from influencers. My husband and I went to check out their lunch menu. The food was good but definitely overpriced. The best part of our meal was their fries. They overcooked our lemongrass beef so the server took it back for us and when they brought it back, it was extra rare. We had asked for medium rare to medium per their recommendation so that was disappointing but the fries were amazing lol The crispy chicken lollipops were good but I wouldn't get it again for that price. Their Cobb Salad was okay... I think overall the ambiance and the service was great so if you're looking for some fun cocktails or a girls' night out/date, it would be worth it but if you're looking for some amazing Singaporean food, I wouldn't recommend it. Do yourself a favor and ask for Jaime as your waitress! She was amazing ! She was very knowledgeable about the menu and gave great suggestions based on our party size and drink options! We came here to celebrate my husband and I's birthday's and we couldn't have had a better experience. We came with an older group and the hip, posh scene was a surprise to them but they all loved it too! The only downside was it was a bit loud and hard to have a conversation. They do give you a free glass of champagne to celebrate your birthday though so that was fun! Now my favorite part... THE FOOD-- it was all phenomenal! They took over the old big city diner in ward. I read somewhere that they were going for a crazy rich Asians vibe and I do totally get it. I dig all neon lights everywhere and the decor. We rolled in on a Monday night without a reservation and it was packed! They were able to sit us at a free table. Service was really good, even tho they were busy our food came out pretty quickly! We ordered a couple appetizers and garlic noodles. I heard things were supposedly a bit on the spicier side but the dishes we ordered weren't spicy they had spicy dips that came with them but even those had a mild at best kick. I think next time we're going to try the ones with chili peppers next to them. I think out of all the dishes I liked the roti the best! The newest addition to Ward villlage, it replaced big city diners space near the theaters. The service was friendly and the staff likes to make recommendations on their favorite dishes and libations which is helpful. Most of the dishes are family style. The curry hamachi crudo was my favorite dish of the evening. Perfect bite with a mild curry sauce was a wonderful pairing. I also enjoyed the spicy street noodles which had egg noodle, cabbage, shrimp tossed together in a very flavorful sauce that had sweetness and that Asian fishiness. The chicken lollipops came highly recommended. It has a crisp and sticky spicy sweet exterior and tender meat inside. The only miss of the night was the pork dish. The flavors were fine but the meat was chewy and fatty. Not in a good pork belly way. Their drinks are really good and potent. Tried the Jillian which is their version of the lychee martini. He reserved this place for dinner at 8 after doing some due diligence on TripAdvisor. Straits is a new hip restaurant, family owned we were told. Its lively decor, lounge and bar space is quite inviting. The music is pretty loud so it's a loud atmosphere, expect to almostttttt have to yell--definitely no inside voices. People dressed casual and up up, it was a mix tbh. Our waitress was very attentive, checking in on us quite a bit till the mains came where it slowed down which was cool bc it left room for uninterrupted convo. For starters we had the fried chicken lollipops followed up with garlic noodles and yu sheng salad. We were pleased with all of our dishes. The chicken reminded me of bonchon, the noodles were peppered to perfection, and the salad was a layered delights. Unfortunately they don't have dessert yet. My drink reminded me of a Moscow mule. It was a little sweeter than what I would've liked but not too much that I wouldn't order it again. The lounge area looked like quite the vibe, they allow for bottle service. My friends and I made last minute reservations and were surprised they had availability. I've been to Straits in SF at the Westfield mall during HH but nothing like the one that just opened up here in Hawaii. When entering, the vibes were immediately Singaporean-ish. Not that I've been there but just based off of watching "Crazy Rich Asians" and my friend who's been there recently. The vibes are definitely my type of place to be, from the interior to the bathroom mirror, absolutely love!!! Since my friends and I had a late reservation, we weren't as hungry so we only ordered two appetizers to share and had a few drinks while catching up. We were so excited to try the place. The decor looks beautiful and makes it look like such a fun vibe. We were able to easily make reservations online. When we go there, everyone greeted us an welcomed us. All the decor, silverware, and everything was so beautiful. We started with the Jillian drink which comes with an iridescent bubble on top. Amazing! It's a lychee martini and tasted good. They said the food is Singaporean inspired and it all had great flavor. We started with the hamachi crudo which was delicious, one of my favorite dishes. We also got the chicken "lollipops" which were also really tasty. Lots of seafood on the menu we had someone allergic to crab and shrimp so ill have to be back to order some of those items. That is totally fine with us, restaurants need to get their groove and they need to hear from customers what is working and what isn't. Straights was everything we expected! Atmosphere: Feels super trendy and chic. I do feel if you arrive in shorts and slippers you will feel underdressed. Have a night out! Get all dressy! Feel the vibe! It has a dark feeling inside, more of a chic nightclub then a day time type of restaurant. We always like to sit at the bar. Small bar, maybe fits 10? They have a lounge area also near the bar with those low tables more of a group stopping point. Hard to really eat the food from those low tables. Then they have their main dining room area. Food: Holy moly SPICY in all CAPS! wowza. We had a hard time finding something on the menu that wouldn't burn our mouths off. lol Sad to say but we ended up ordering a few things but they were just so hot we couldn't take more than 1 bite. What we did eat was the flat bread, but did NOT dip it in the hot curry sauce and the bone marrow. Bone marrow has very little meat and a ton of bread crumbs. Visited the restaurant on a busy Saturday night with a friends family. Called more than a week ahead to secure the table. They allow for two hours of dining. The staff was extremely kind, will share great recommendations, and offer really exceptional service. Nice lighting that dimmed around 7pm. Now to the food! As someone who has been to Singapore a few times this was authentic, tasty, and they have a great selection. The appetizers were good, would recommend the lollipops based on the seasoning and crisp factor. The roti prata's sauce was a bit spicy but still great. Although a bit pricy, if you share the dishes with others you can try a lot. The butterfish was delicious, not a huge amount but really tender. The Hainan chicken was really tasty and came with a variety of sauces and the traditional rice. Also the noodles were great! Meegoreng was quite spicy, I can handle spice but this definitely caused you to reach for the water. The wok fried with Chinese sausage and garlic noodles were really good. Some tables nearby ordered the crab and were provided gloves. Looked great! They have several alcohol choices. The Sir Raffles was fresh but not too alcohol forward. Probably could have had a second or third. Lots of birthday parties, groups with families, and millennials/gen z. We ordered several dishes, we were brought a dish we never ordered and then we never given a dish we did order. Exciting to see more representation for Singaporean food in Honolulu! South East Asian food holds a special place in my heart. It is complex, flavorful, and has a lot of interesting textures. At first glance, the decor is very hip, upscale, and trendy. A bright neon sign hangs over the bar and music blasts loudly in the speakers overhead. There are tropical themed fixtures and decorative plants throughout the space. There are two separate areas for dining, regular tables and the lounge area. We had a large party of ten and were only able to book the lounge area on short notice. This restaurant gets REALLY LOUD, you will definitely need to shout to be able to have a conversation. I've gone to my fair share of music festivals but the music is unnecessarily loud. If I ever do come back and sit in the lounge, I'd probably have to bring earplugs. Granted, we were seated next to the speaker so it might be more comfortable sitting farther away. (I did see that they do provide bottle service so I can see what kind of demographic they're catering to) On to the food... We ordered a LOT of food. All the portions are big enough to be shared. The strongest dishes were the lemongrass beef and the beef rendang. The lemongrass beef was very tender and well seasoned. It melted in my mouth. Rendang was a generous portion size and also very tender. I would have liked to taste a little more of the spices. I love pandan flavored anything but I'm not really sure how I felt about polenta. I don't think it really added much to showcase the flavor of the Rendang. For the food, there were a few misses. The weaker dishes we tried were the hainan chicken, garlic noodles, chaw kway teow, coconut shrimp fried rice, and lollipop chicken. Hainan chicken for $28 is pretty steep. I thought it was pretty average in terms of flavor and could be improved. The chicken could be softer, and I wished that there was a little more flavor in the rice and aromatic broth. Garlic noodles were good but a little too salty. Chaw Kway Teow had a nice charred flavor but a little too sweet for my preference. The coconut shrimp fried rice was on the spicier side so some people in my party had a hard time eating it. Lastly, the crispy lollipop chicken was a really good portion size but a little too dry. The biggest strength was the phenomenal service! Our waitress was very quick, efficient, and personable. Our table was touched throughout our meal and drinks were plentiful. Wait time for food was also pretty timely. We always had a steady stream of food always hitting the table. I think my biggest issue from the dining experience was the ambiance. It feels conflicting at times because of the price point. At night, there is an almost intimate dream-like vibe with the dark and moody lighting. The loud music makes it a little disorienting. I would have liked to feel a little more comfortable without my ears feeling like they were ringing throughout the entire meal. I think the food does have the potential to better and it is still a decent representation of Singaporean food. If you are new to this type of cuisine, it still may be worth trying when you want to splurge. The food was so delicious! Has a lot of Thai and Malaysian flavors and it was cool to see how they plated each dish and put their own spin on it. My favorites were the straits frites (fries), the garlic noodles, and the pandan coconut rice. These are must-try's if you plan to visit!! The fries had a lemongrass flavored aioli that tasted like nothing I've ever had! The pandan coconut rice was so fragrant and had that hint of coconut! It paired well with all the dishes and I found myself eating it on its own. As for the rest of the dishes, I didn't love the beef rendang, spicy basil chicken, and spicy street noodles. The flavors were good but didn't have that wow factor the first three had. The people and environment make this place a 11/10. The waiters were so sweet and attentive! They would check in on us and make sure we had everything we needed! That plus the dim lighting created the perfect mood for a birthday celebration. It felt sophisticated and fun at the same time. Yikes! This place took a turn. I came today with friends for Brunch. There was a large party so there was no Brunch, there was lunch or dinner. That was fine. We ordered our food and waited, then waited, and finally the roti appetizers came. Those were good, I was excited from there for what was to come. I ordered an orange juice, it was fermented...rotten! The smell was so strong. I don't blame the server but that smell was not subtle. I ordered the coconut shrimp fried rice, there was no coconut. No hint of coconut, or salt! There was no hint of anything, I could have ate air. Also the plate came with large uncooked pieces of cabbage all over, I had to pick them out. I also got the stir fried eggplant, it was straight heat again no salt. The food came for other people in my party almost an hour after waiting. We were the only ones at the time besides the party. Then an hour later they came and said 2 of the things we ordered were 86d. An hour to realize something was not available. Our server did the best he could but what an unfortunate experience. Go Straits somewhere else... This evening my husband and I had reservations for 6:15pm. We left after waiting for over an hour and a half, because our dinner still hadn't arrive. This restaurant is poorly managed. Half their menu wasn't available and their kitchen, incredibly slow. read more

Ok, I fully admit that I read the bill wrong & am sorry for the initially negative review I left. Let's start over. We were super excited to get dressed up & have caviar and Asian fusion food, and the reviews of this place were outstanding. We were seated right away, and we had amazing service the whole evening. I started with a Sunday Afternoon drink. We got the caviar service, and man, was it ever delicious! The crème fraiche has a bright twist to it that made it absolutely sing! By far the best thing all night! We got whole snapper, beautifully presented & too spicy for me, but my husband loved it. The prawn fried rice was a nice foil to the spice. You guys, then things get interesting - they just start bringing us stuff to try! One beautiful thing after the other! All just because they knew it was my birthday! I felt like a princess! AND a glass of champagne! So, I'm glad I tipped well because I feel really bad about my mistaken first impression & thanks for calling me to clear it up. You guys really outdid yourselves. read more

Came here after finding out The Merriman was closed temporarily due to water issues I believe. Luckily, it was empty on a Tuesday night for our birthday dinner. It's what I expected this place to be when I first saw it on IG: dark, lots of plants and neon lights to hit the right atmosphere. The food was good as we ordered chicken, fried rice and soup! I wish I could try out their special drinks. I'll come back again for a special occasion. read more

Was attending a show in the neighborhood, so we decided to test out Straits- and boy am happy we did! Food was so flavorful, staff was wonderfully attentive ( granted I think were the only ones there eating at 4pm...) and the ambience fun and upbeat. I can easily see this being a trendy night place to go eat. I had the Laksa Noodle Soup which had just the right amount of heat and tons of flavor! My friend had the Hainan Chicken with its trio of sauces and he was also delighted. I get the youthful vibe may not be for everyone but certainly a place I recommend to try! read more

I definitely got out of my comfort zone eating here. I originally wanted to come here just for a drink after shopping, however extensive shopping led to needing to eat. The server was amazing as she explained the menud and provided extremely good suggestions. Heads up majority of the food items are spicy as noted by the red pepper next to it. We ordered the laska noodle soup, roti plata, garlic noodles, and Hainan chicken. All the dishes were amazing and quite a big portion. We shared everything but the laska because it was way to spicy for me even with the sauce on the side. We were extremely full and almost didn't order dessert, but I'm glad we did. I ordered the pandan chiffon and omg it was amazing! Vanilla flavor cake with a lihing mui pineapple topping to die for! I thought it was going to be interesting but it paired so well. The cake was extremely light, frosting perfect flavor and not sweet. I can't rave enough about this dessert. I highly recommend trying this place out. Side note you can sit lounge style or at a table. Great for larger gatherings or just date night. There is also a kids menu. read more

First two times I had a great experience but tonight's dinner was completely lacking. Restaurant was muggy and hot. Not sure if the AC was down? Many of the patrons fanning themselves with their menu. We had an early evening reservation (5pm) yet they were out of many of their dishes - no lollipop chicken, no hainan chicken, no chili or pepper crab! The only saving grace was that our waiter tried his best to service us but they seemed short staffed and he was covering quite a few tables. Overall very disappointed. read more

Food was amazing, service was great as well and food was very flavorful and came out pretty quick. We did come for brunch and it wasn't that busy but nonetheless parking is great as well there is more than enough when wanting to come to straits. It is a Singapore based menu so everything was packed with a lot of flavor and unique. Atmosphere was very welcoming pair with great lighting and local vibe. All in all it was an incredible experience and I look forward to coming back and trying different things on their menu. read more

Our server was just fine. However, there was a problem with timing of food. Everyone in restaurant was waiting a long time for their orders. Others were looking for their food.We ordered our food at 7pm. Wine arrived right away. The order was randomly delivered with long waits in between. Appetizers , then salad then main meal is the normal order of received g food. This was not the case at all. One of the other waitresses kept bumping my husband's shoulder as she walked by without saying anything, like I'm so sorry. The most annoying was the lack of AC. We were so hot,we are locals, and food took soooooolong! I'm thinking the problem of timing had to do with kitchen. Perhaps someone called out sick.? The kitchen was backlogged. The food was good when it arrived. But some orders came way too late so we boxed it up to take home. Also they ran out of bags to carry home our containers of food that we didn't finish. It was Valentines evening. So we can be a little bit understanding.,but not entirely. It's a management problem. read more
