Asuka classic broth with the Kalbi and ribeye set
    Kristina D.

I came here two times in one week...you could say I'm obsessed! Each time I got the Asuka classic broth with the kalbi and ribeye set. The broth is so delicious that I dream about it, and to top it off they also have an amazing ginger sesame dipping sauce. The staff here is very kind, and the food comes out quick. I came here once during the week around opening and was seated right away, but made a reservation for the weekend just to be safe.

I've been a happy Asuka goer for the past couple of years. Service is fast and friendly, and the ambiance is dim and quiet. There is plenty of parking available on the street or lot across the street. Reservations are easy to make, just call a day or so in advance. The Asuka classic broth is a dreamy buttery broth. Be sure to ask for extra butter and pepper to add in! The kalbi set is very tender, delicious, and reasonably priced at $25. Highly highly recommend this place, and remember to keep it kaimuki!

Called to make a reservation the same night and when I called they said they didn't have any openings until 7:30 but when we walked in there was barely anyone in the restaurant so I'm not sure why they told us we couldn't come at 6:30. There were only 2 parties inside. So that was annoying. But we ordered the portions are pretty small and they were out of fish balls. The pork was also sliced paper thin it was sticking to the plate it was so thin. We were out of there within 30-40 minutes. It was okay not sure if we'll be back.

Delicious and very straight forward menu. I ordered the kalbi and pork set. I also ordered a side of fish cake but forgot to take a pic. The meats were a delicious cute and went well with the different sauces provided. There's a list of soup options to choose from. Each set comes with the three sauces, variety of veggies, udon, one dumpling, and a bowl of rice. It was a perfect amount, I was definitely very full after my meal. Simple place, clean and staff were very nice. We were able to bring a cake for my friend's birthday. There's street meter parking all around, so depending on time, check to see if you can park for free. You can make reservations.

I was first introduced to Asuka Nabe by coworkers a couple years ago and I've returned consistently since then. My favorite broth is the Asuka classic, which is creamy with a delightful miso base. The sets also offer a variety of vegetables with udon noodles and a gyoza. I usually get the Kalbi and Ribeye set but have enjoyed the Premium Pork belly and Kobe American Wagyu sets. The dipping sauces are the my favorite parts of the whole meal! A delicious ponzu and sesame sauce, but the house-made ginger sauce is out of this world! The restaurant is pretty intimate with a few booths, and I usually make reservations for bigger parties, but haven't waited too long for two-party walk-ins right at opening. The servers are attentive and the wait time for the food is short which is great when you're hungry!

Whenever I order CowCow's Tea and wait outside for my order, I've always told myself that I should check it out one day as it's interior and menu was very attractive. Finally got the chance to with a friend who also have never been here before! It's located next to, as I mentioned, CowCow's Tea on Waialae Ave. Parking is relatively bad as there aren't many "free". There's limited street parking but there are two paid parking lots across the street with ample parking. My friend and I shared a Kalbi/Ribeye set and added an order of the Premium Pork Belly and udon noodles. It came with vegetables and rice. We chose the Wafu soup base, and I instantly fell in love with the broth. Soooo so good! I couldn't stop drinking the soup base. The portions were a bit small as one shabu shabu set was meant for one person. Good thing we added the pork belly ala carte! The meats were super tender and fresh. Delicious! The three sauces provided really complimented the meats. Such delicious dipping sauces! The restaurant had a really nice atmosphere and the food was delicious! I feel like the only con was the price. The price can definitely add up, but you'll be paying for the quality.

The space is small, so there can be a wait, but don't let that discourage you. The restaurant is mostly bar seating, and people tend to order, eat, and head out, so the turnover is surprisingly quick. It's not really a spot for large groups, but that's part of its charm. One thing you absolutely have to order is the salad. I know it sounds strange to get excited about shredded cabbage, but it's actually the yuzu dressing that is incredible. It strikes the perfect balance of sweet, savory, and citrusy flavors in a way that I've never had anywhere else. Unfortunately, it's homemade. And I'm still thinking about it. Let's not skip over the main attraction - the bowls! Every bowl I've tried is delicious, but you need to get the negitoro with the shoyu egg so you can mix it altogether and make little hand rolls with the nori. Perfection!

Lunch and dinner menus are very different FYI! For drink I ordered the Shiso Crazy. Great drink and love the name! More on the sour side than sweet. For appetizers we got gyoza and the Okinawa sweet potato salad. The gyoza was very flavorful. Now for the potato salad... this was one of the best flavor combinations I have ever tasted. I would come back just to eat this again. The creaminess of the potato with the small pop of saltiness from the ikura... it's the perfect blend of flavors and textures in one bite. For entrees we got the full size spicy ahi Don and the mentaiko pasta (one of the new menu items). Both were good but the mentaiko pasta could've used a bit more salt based on my preferences. The shrimp was cooked perfectly. The restaurant is a decent size but I would make a reservation if you're coming during peak hours. I was so upset with myself, because I wanted to go here weeks ago when I found it by accident on Instagram, lol. Next time I will not forget. So the bento that was left was the chicken Kara'age. I wasn't expecting much since it was the last meal available. I decided to try it after organizing my clothing in my closet. Honestly I wasn't hungry, but it was approaching 5pm which was very late for me, lol. I nuked it a little to get it warm removing all the cold items out first then ate the side dishes first I thought mmm, not bad. But then came the chicken and I was mesmerized by the first bite. I thought okay take a few more bites then judge it. So I thought maybe I was starving, so I dipped it into the sauce it came with and my mouth started to have a party inside! The dip reminds me of Japan and the red rice is exactly how my Okinawan mom used to make it. Well, I'm sold and if this is the least wanted plate of the entire day I can't even imagine how spectacular the others must taste. The lady at the register was so kind and apologized several times for being sold out. I totally understand but she definitely meant the apology I can tell. Reminds me of Japan again and she was wearing a mask which is a Japanese custom these days. There is a little table outside for seating of three I think. Everything tasted homemade and was prepared with care. The salmon was covered in a flavorful sauce that paired perfectly with the fish. The fried fish also came with a sauce that reminded me of tartar sauce, but it had a unique twist that made it one of a kind. If you're a fan of rice, you'll appreciate that they use authentic Japanese short-grain rice. This is the kind of place I love discovering. You can tell they take pride in their cooking and make it a point to prepare everything from scratch. The restaurant is small and only allows about three customers inside at a time, so it's takeout only. The prices are exactly what I'd expect for fresh, homemade food, and in my opinion, it's well worth it. Food: Service: Quality: Value: Overall: I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu.

We enjoyed the quality of fish and variety available. As we were eating the waitresses would come by and take any empty dishes from our sets while reminding us again, that they close at 2pm. It felt really rushed and unwelcoming. Before we could finish eating they dropped the bill off to our table and checked to see if they could take payment within less than a couple minutes. The waitress then came back with a bag for us to take the sake home. We quickly finished our meal and I paid cash so we could just leave at this point. They were so quick to rush us out that while we were standing outside the restaurant the waitress came outside to let me know she didn't put everything she needed to charge us for on the bill so I needed to come back inside to pay an additional amount. After paying a second time she gave something to my sister for her birthday and sent us on our way. Considering there were other parties still seated in the restaurant when we left and they were aware of us celebrating a birthday I feel pretty disappointed about our experience there.
