I'm always looking for a nice salon that won't make me go broke and this is the one. It may be small but it's so peaceful, bright and smells wonderful! I've gone here several times for all over color. Most recently I got my hair highlighted for my wedding. The next day when I had a bit of a panic realizing I chose too dark of a color, the stylist fit me right in to help lighten my hair. It turned out golden and gorgeous. Horrible customer service. I was not greeted upon entering, the stylist was finishing up on a client and had another one waiting. So, she clearly was double booked and didn't have the decency to come over and communicate that to me. She just motioned for her next client to come get shampooed while I sat there waiting, not knowing what was going on. Mind you, this was already 20 minutes into my appointment. I finally went over to her while she was shampooing her client and I asked if she was double booked. She then communicated to me she was behind, blamed her colleague for booking the appointment, did not apologize for the mix up, nor did she offer to fix it. I used to really like this salon a few years ago but since moving back to Davis I've realized it's gone downhill. I suggest finding a salon that communicates better, calls to confirm appointments, and greets you upon entering. Basic human decency, right? You know that scene in Bridget Jones Edge of Reason when she goes to the salon with high expectations and comes out wrecked? My haircut was not that bad, but I can now relate to her panic and dismay. I have been planning my visit to Strands for a month. I had a Groupon for a cut and Aveda Deep Conditioning treatment, and, having never gotten my hair cut at a salon, I was looking forward to a relaxing visit after my last week of school (teachers--you can relate!). I booked with Shonika because I liked the pictures of her work posted by other yelpers. Before I left work for my appointment, I checked the Groupon and saw it was expired. I wasn't too worried because the groupon said it was still good for the $33 I spent, but I called ahead to let them know and to cancel the deep conditioning treatment. The ambiance of the salon was spa-like, and I was offered water when I checked in, which was very thoughtful. Shonika was very kind and seemed experienced. The consultation went pretty smoothly. I had about 20-22-inch fine, wavy hair with grown-out layers. I showed her a picture of a model with a haircut that ended just below the shoulders, with long layers and face framing. She brought my hair to my chest and asked me to show her where I wanted it to end, I indicated just past my clavicle. She verbally confirmed that I wanted shoulder-length hair, but I told her that didn't sound right. She brought my hair against the top of my shoulders and showed me where she would cut for shoulder-length--right near the tip of my shoulder. It looked right so I said ok, and for insurance I added "and maybe just slightly past". Next, she did something really cool: she turned me around and gave me a mirror so I could see her make the first few cuts as a guide, but I should have stopped her there. Where she cut was about 4-5 inches shorter than I anticipated. I asked if that was the longest length and she assured me it would be the shortest. I was relieved--maybe she was doing a lob-type cut and it would be longer in the front. She was a professional! I was sure I had been clear! I went with her to get shampooed. The aveda products smell heavenly and Shonika was very gentle. We went back to the chair and she got to work. I had my glasses off, but when she got to the front I could tell my hair would be too short. Instead of going past my shoulders, my wet hair was hanging just above my shoulders. I tried not to panic--she's a professional. This is a $45 haircut. I showed her the picture. She confirmed the length. I trusted that she'd find a way to make it work. When she asked me about the length I said "It's shorter than expected" and she replied with a cheerful affirmative and let me know she'd be drying my hair. Now I would get to see how long it really was...and sadly my hair did not grow an extra 4 inches after the blow dry. She asked me what I thought and I think I said "Ok". I'm not a very reliable witness at this point because I was trying to hold back a meltdown. "It's just hair. Just hair" became my mantra. I declined her offer to style and said that I just wanted to leave. In hindsight, I should have said I was unhappy. I could have avoided future unpleasantness...but Shonika seemed so happy and I didn't want to make her upset. When I went to pay there was some confusion with the Groupon. As I mentioned before, it was expired, but my Groupon said it was still good for the $33 I originally paid. After a little bit of confusion (in which I heard one employee say that they shouldn't accept expired Groupons, which confused me) I paid, left Shonika the requisite 15% tip, and got the hell out of Dodge. In the safety of my car, I was able to vent my emotions with all matter of screaming and waterworks. I had told my mom I was getting a haircut, so she was waiting for me when I got home. I ran past her to the bathroom to run my head under the tap in a futile attempt to see if the cut would look ok air-dried (spoiler alert: not really). My mom, deeply concerned, sat me down to hear the story, and then I went to lay down (all that weeping can give you a headache!). When I woke up from my nap my mom told me she had called the salon and was waiting to hear back--I was mortified! Later, I spoke to Janette, and I told her the sorry story. I was surprised that she then brought up the Groupon, reminding me I got a discounted haircut because the salon doesn't get the money from Groupon once they expire. I told her this wasn't what the Groupon said, and she said it was the truth. I asked her if I then received the treatment I did because of the Groupon, since they were inconvenienced to have to honor the $33 value of the Groupon, and she said no. I wondered aloud why the Groupon had been brought up, because it was the service I received that was the issue not the cost or payment. She said she'd need to wait for the manager to ok a refund. The only reason I wanted to come here was because I was given a gift card.I came her after months of wanting to cut my hair. I wanted a more layered look than I already had in addition to side swept bangs. I had not had any stylist besides one in SJ achieve them for me so I was excited that Strands might be able to. After yelping, I booked an appointment with Jeannette. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. She was working on me and another person at the same time. She would go back and forth between us. And mentioned that I was not a Diva for not complaining about it. I came in at 11 and left at 12:45pm, FOR A HAIRCUT. I left with the worst bangs ever and 3 half attempted curls. I had half of what is bangs. When she was cutting them she kept asking me if I wanted her to go further back on them. I told her to do what she thought was best, after all she was the professional. And I left with the same haircut, minus the worst bangs I have ever had, that I had come in with. Since she had been working with on two people at once, she did not have enough time to style my hair but that did not stop her from trying. I have silky hair that takes time to style so she tried to give me curls but I left with only 3 sections curled because she ran out of time before I had to leave. I'm a girl who seldom gets her haircut and who peruses thru several dozen yelp reviews to meticulously and skeptically choose 1 salon @ which I will allow someone to chop my hair off. Well, for this year, I chose Strands. And for $45, I was very satisfied. I was first intrigued to come to Strands b/c their website boasted a ritual in which the salon served you a drink, gave you a hand massage, and applied makeup for you w/ your haircut purchase. Yah, I didn't get any of those things, so minus a star for false advertisement. But, that would have been icing on the cake anyways. I was set up with Laura who was very chill and easy to to talk to. She listened to my requests with the layering of my hair and made sure that each change she made to my hair was satisfactory to me. (I'm really not that picky @ all but it was nice that she checked in on how I felt about my hair during the progress). On top of that, Laura styled and curled my hair with a hair straightener free of charge. I've never had bouncier and smoother curls! And she did it magically with no hair spray and it lasted for 2 days! (Up until I had to wash my hair of course, otherwise who knows how many days it would have lasted). This is a major feat for me b/c I have heavy stubborn hair that likes to lay flat. I would totally come here again. The price is right and the salon feels upscale. read more

If I could give this review 0 stars I would. A few months back I was looking for a hair salon in Davis to get a haircut since my hometown is in SoCal and I wasn't going to be going home soon to have my normal hair stylist cut my hair (she's been my stylist since middle school, so I don't trust many others with my hair). I looked around on Yelp and the reviews for this place seemed ok and one of my friends had gone to an Aveda salon in SoCal so she said it should be fine at this salon too. I booked the appointment for a trim and I was nervous the whole time. I got there and they offered me a water or tea while I waited for my hair stylist. A few hours later I actually liked the haircut I got and even tipped my stylist. A few months go by and I get another trim from the same stylist. The cut was decent and I tip her again. Towards the end of my appointment, I tell her I'm thinking of getting a balayage the next time I come in. I've had my hair balayaged before, but only by my longtime hair stylist in SoCal. I show her pictures of what I'm looking for and she says she can definitely do that the next time I come in. A few weeks later I make that appointment to get my hair balayaged by her. I had asked how much balayage costs and the receptionist tells me the price starts at $100 and can increase depending on certain factors which I'm guessing are hair length and thickness. Note: I was flying home for the weekend to see my family before starting summer classes the following Monday, so I had a flight to catch right after my hair appointment. I get to the salon and sit down with my hair stylist and show her the pictures I showed her the last time I was there. Again, she says she can do that and she goes to prep what she needs. About an hour later, she's rinsing my hair and says she needs to fix it up a bit apparently. She mixes hair dye and reapplies it to my hair. She repeats this process three times, so I'm starting to get worried because my normal stylist has NEVER had to do that. She finally stops and rinses and washes out my hair. By this time, I'm behind schedule and need to leave to get to the airport soon which I tell her so she blow drys my hair for one or two minutes and then braids it so I can leave for the airport. I didn't get to fully see what my hair looked like since it was wet and I was in a rush to not miss my flight. I tip her out of courtesy again....Something I will regret. By the end of my flight my hair is dry and I get home and look in a mirror and my hair is so BLEACHED and NOT AT ALL what I asked her to do. To make matters worse,I changed my clothes after getting home and noticed she had also BLEACHED the shirt I was wearing on the back collar. Out of all the times I've gotten my hair done that has NEVER happened. No professional stylist should allow for a client's clothes to get bleached. She would have seen the bleach marks too once she had braided my hair, but failed to mention it to me nor apologize at the time. I call the salon to speak to a manager to get a refund because my hair is BLEACHED not balayaged AND my shirt is ruined. They tell me the manager (Lauren) is at their Sacramento salon, so I have to call there to speak with her. She says that the girl who messed up my hair to begin with has to redeem herself and redo my hair before I can get a refund. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE ! Don't waste money here read more

I found a groupon for a cut and condition. Using the groupon so was fast and easy, it was probably the fastest check out I've had using a groupon. When first walking into the salon, I was greeted with a smile and offered a beverage. After checking in for my appt, I waited a few minutes until name was called. There is a very small waiting area, 1 small bench with 2 seats, mayyybe 3 seats if you want to cuddle up. Products are in the front area while the chairs for haircuts/color are to the side. There is street parking available and a parking garage half a block away Overall, I had a good experience with my hair dresser Shonica (not sure if spelled right). We were able to have light conversation that never got awkward. She explained what she was doing, which was great since some people just cut and you end up with something you did not expect. She also explained each of the products she used and why she was using them. My top picks: 1. Groupon for the cut and condition, it was a great deal and an opportunity to try out a new place 2. I have never ever written a review about my hair before, but I absolutely loved this place from the start! Sure, it was a bit pricier than other places, but it was worth it! The enviornment was great and I think I have never been more satisfied with my hair. Everyday when I wake up, look in the mirror, I absolutely love my hair. I have never been one to brush or style my hair, and I am a huge fan of the A-line cut. I already had the A-line, and was going to get it trimmed, and decided I wanted one side longer than the other, and Antoinette did just that! I wasn't sure how it would turn out, but my hair looks great all day, every day. Also, Antoinette was very friendly! The head massage they give beforehand was nice and I love that they offer customers tea or hot water (which by the way, was good)! Came here with a family member so she could get her hair highlighted, cut, and to cover grey hairs. Her hair is dark brown for the most part with natural light brown highlights. She had an appointment with Antoinette (probably spelled her name wrong) who told us that to highlight my family member's hair she would have to lift the color with a light caramel shade. I would like to clarify that we were VERY SPECIFIC in showing what we wanted, using many pictures off of a board we had made on Pinterest. Antoinette told us to go lighter than we had originally wanted so that the color would show through and we agreed. The final result was really upsetting, especially knowing that we paid over $210 dollars for highlights and a cut. Antoinette even admitted that the highlights DID NOT look like highlights and instead exactly the same as my aunt's natural hair color. What was also interesting is that at one point Antoinette left us for around 20 mins, with no explanation, and we thought she was on break but she wasn't. Also, all of my aunt's grey hairs weren't even covered fully, ever AFTER we pointed out to Antoinette that there were more than a few that were very vividly grey and white. She said she wouldn't color them because they wouldn't matter but they stood out a lot in my aunt's hair. My aunt wanted a very dramatic A-line hair cut and Antoinette didn't give her one, we could barely tell that her hair had an A-line cut at all. We even asked her to cut the back shorter because we couldn't tell and it still didn't change much. Later we called the place to speak with Antoinette many times, but NEVER actually got to talk with her. My aunt was leaving town to go home to SoCal on Sunday and apparently after many many calls, we find out that Antoinette can't see her until Tuesday. My aunt was NOT refunded or compensated in any way, shape, or form. Nothing was very impressive about the quality of service in general as well, since we were only offered tea or water. Usually there are apparently other free services that we had absolutely NO knowledge of. We ended up spending 4 hours at the salon for terrible results. Went her to cut my hair after one whole year of no haircuts. I wanted to get it cut and fresh before the new school year and just make it more manageable. I cut my hair with Margarita who was very sweet and knowledgeable about hair. The treatment started of with an aromatherapy massage where my scalp was massaged, then shampooed and conditioned, and then a haircut and style. She also spent about 1 1/2 hours on my hair, so you'll definitely get the stylists full attention. Book soon before they get busy before the school year starts! :) read more

I went to see Laura on a last minute impulse to get a haircut when I should have been studying for my finals. I scheduled my appoint for 11:15, but received a call at 11:04 asking if it would be alright to come in at 11:30 because she was running behind. I really appreciated this because when I have to wait I'm like a five year old who can't keep still. I showed up to my appointment and she sat me down in her chair at probably 11:40 and I was out of the salon on my way home at 12:25. This is literally the fastest hair cut I have ever gotten and I appreciate that as well. I came in looking like a greasy hot mess and left feeling cute and spunky. I asked for a long bob and told her to cut off as much as it would take to make my hair look and feel healthy again. She only took off an inch, if that. I have NEVER had this much hair saved, stylists like to hack away but Laura didn't. She also taught me how to do the super popular beachy curls with a straightener since I told her that's the only tool I have. She didn't use a crap ton of product so my hair feels light and soft and has movement. Overall I loved this experience and I will definitely be going back. :) read more

I'm pretty finicky about my hair as a warning of this review. I came here because I was in desperate need of a haircut, so I pretty much picked whoever was available for the time I wanted to come in. My stylist was Jeanette. Although she was quite pleasant she did a pretty so-so job on my hair. The dye job was fine because I wanted an all-over hair color and this was completely successful. However, I wanted a haircut and bangs but she didn't thin out my hair at all so it looks like someone just took scissors and chopped off my hair without any TLC. My bangs are pathetic and I know that my hair is super straight but she is a professional and should be able to do this. Unfortunately, my bangs were cut but they aren't able to lay on my face like I like them, they are basically just hair that is shorter than the rest of my hair. For a professional salon like this, I expect more. So my search for a good haircut continues. read more

I think I'm the only guy so far that's reviewed this place. In my opinion, definitely nothing special for guys here. Sure, every hairstylist I've had here knew what a faux-hawk was and could cut one, but therein lies the problem: the turnover here is insane. I went through about 4 stylists in the course of a year and a half due to them leaving the salon and it's always annoying to have to explain exactly how you like your hair cut. Not to mention the trial and error each stylist goes through after the initial cut, so realistically I never was able to just make an appointment with my regular stylist, walk in, get cut, be happy and walk out. It doesn't speak well of the business when stylists are in and out faster than you can bat your eyelashes. The thing that really kills this place for me? They really own you at the cashier. I forgot what his name is, but he charges $45 for a guy's cut (not including tip). Pretty laughable considering we're not at Vidal Sassoon in Beverly Hills; not to mention when I went back the next day to get something fixed really quick (which took not more than 5 mins to correct) he gave me the sigh of exasperation like I was too much trouble. Son please, my dollar and time is the reason you're working here. If you're a female, maybe it's different here. But for a guy, there's way better options in town. I rarely get haircuts because I like to grow out my hair for donation. Strands offer a discount if you decide to donate your hair which I greatly appreciated. I donated 12 inches of my hair, but depending on where you would like to donate your hair to, 8 inches is minimum. I made my appointment a week in advanced for Shonika because she had great reviews on yelp. Shonika was friendly, and easy to talk to. She was attentive and listened to how I wanted layers in my hair, but also keeping it low maintenance at the same time. I paid a total of $30 for a wash, cut, and style (where $25 for the discounted haircut and $5 for tip). Overall, I am satisfied with the customer service and haircut that I got from Strands. read more

For the past 3 years, I've been growing my hair out to donate to Locks of Love (an organization that creates hair pieces for children/teens with cancer). My hair was finally long enough to donate (minimum 10 inches) and I needed to chop it off! After looking at some reviews, I asked my co-worker where she went. She highly recommended Strands (see Emily W.'s review). I called in before they opened, left a message and received a call back shortly after they opened at 10 a.m. They had an appointment available at 11:00 a.m. and down I went. Jill (I think that's her name) knew exactly how to prep my hair for the donation, and listened to my concerns about not wanting my hair too short. She agreed that a straight bob would not do, and understood when I said I didn't want Kate Gosselin hair. She cut and styled my hair into a very cute bob/a-line cut. I haven't stopped receiving compliments since I went to Strands! Would highly recommend this place for future cuts! read more

They do have a customer loyalty program which is good. Also if I pay for a shampoo I want something of a head massage too which I didn't get. I was donating my hair to locks of love so I only paid 25 dollar which was a pretty good deal for a shampoo and cut and it went to a good cause. Not a "bad" haircut... But I was expecting more. I'm pretty low maintenance, and my hair is definitely pretty low priority. I bought a living social voucher for a massage, cut, deep conditioning treatment, and a makeup application. I mentioned this to the receptionist and she mistakenly booked me for just a cut, no voucher. For $40 (after the student discount) I was expecting slightly more attention then 15 minutes of snipping my hair... I asked for a trim and relayering. I'm not sure if there are any layers. Nice atmosphere, and my stylist was pleasant to talk to. Maybe my experience would've been better if I had gotten to use that voucher, but after being so unimpressed with my cut I'll probably give it to a friend as a present or something. read more

So I went to this salon after seeing all the good reviews on here, and I wasn't disappointed. I met with Joy. She did an awesome job and I definitely recommend her. My hair was nearly black and I wanted it lightened up to a darker brown color. This process ended up taking 2 and a half hours, but turned out perfectly. It cost me a little over a hundred bucks, but I was expecting much more so I was happy with that (i have extremely long, thick hair so this is not a bad price at all). The shop is really small and cute. They use all Aveeda products, which are awesome. The color is very natural and smells great. The entire staff was very friendly. They offer you drinks (including wine) and magazines to read. Only thing that sucks is the parking, but you're in Davis so you probably expect that. And they can't help that anyway. And you can always bet on an Aveda salon having well trained professionals and better products that are easier on your hair. The prices are a bit high but you get what you pay for. The salon was peaceful and beautiful in a great location that was easy to find. Amy was my hairstylist and she was amazing with expertise and a really positive attitude and kind disposition. She not only held an understanding of what I wanted, guided by my very vague description, but also suggested slight enhancements of the cut I requested with a clear explanation of why. Laura is great! I have "mixed" girl hair as in half African American and half Irish. She had never seen my natural hair before because I straightened it so it was ready for her to cut. She did a great job and was not afraid to cut or layer too much. I made a same day appointment at Strands when I was in Davis visiting a friend and I'm so glad I did! They were super responsive to exactly what I wanted and the result was perfect! I had the best experience here. I don't get haircuts very often and this was my first haircut in about 5 years and I was ready for a change. Stella was my stylist and was incredible, she was patient and asked me several times for clarification on length and style to make sure that I would like my haircut. She did an excellent job and I would definitely come back here again. I also came in with a groupon and she provided the best service and made sure that I felt comfortable. Have been here at least 10 times for haircuts over the last few years-- they were "ok", but never came out very flattering-- I figured it was my hair. Finally got frustrated with them not really listening to what I wanted, and tried another salon, and realized I should have done that a long time ago, since they made my hair do exactly what I wished for. I hate to give this place a bad review because I used to come here years ago. I recently tried it out again and was unimpressed. The cut was shorter than I wanted and worked against my curls. I didn't know it was possible to screw up someone's natural curls. Also, I paid for highlights and got nothing. It doesn't look like anything was done in terms of color. For a while, I thought it looked more grey. I asked for blonde. She said she was going to go light. Did that mean grey? read more
