Got my hair done last week by Antoinette and it turned out great! I went in with about 3 or 4 different colors in my hair (blue faded to green, pink, purple and a dark base color. Crazy, I know) and I wanted them out for something more "natural." Color correcting, dying and then highlights and lowlights was a huge process that took about 3 hrs but I was so happy with the end result that it was worth it. I first want to start off by saying that I've been going to an Aveda salon for 5 years and have always RAVED about the service/treatment I received. At my last Aveda salon, I was immediately greeted, offered hot/cold tea or water and given a smock to change into so that my clothes wouldn't get product/dye/hair on them. I was then given 2 out of 5 free services to chose from. I always chose the massage and mini facial. LOVED it! My haircut was always amazing as well. When I walked into strands I was greeted fine, but nothing impressive. I saw they had cold tea and water, but I wasn't offered any. I wasn't asked to change and sure enough, throughout the ENTIRE process hair was all over my shirt. They offered no free services, just a scalp massage. What am I, a man!?! I was EXTREMELY clear and detailed in telling Joy what I wanted. She stated that she had experience with curly hair and put my mind at ease. I had to ask her TWICE to redo my thinning. She did the entire cut in about 15-20 minutes (my normal haircut is at least 30-45 minutes) and did a HORRIBLE thinning job! My bangs were quite long at the time (past my eyelashes) and already had a side-slant cut. So I asked her to keep the slant and thin my bangs as well. When she was done "thinning" my bangs she removed her hand and I had feathered SHORT bangs above my eyebrow. I had to ask her yet again, for a slant and I should have stopped there. My bangs look horrible! It looks more like a tetris piece than a slant and the shortest part is so short that even with flat ironing they stick straight out. She also ONLY used thinning shears....what is this the 80's? The owner was super nice and refunded the price of the haircut but STAY AWAY FROM JOY! She doesn't listen and does not know how to cut curly hair. The only way my bangs "slant" is if I brush my bangs completely to the side and use product, which I don't like to do on a regular basis. read more

Go see Laura! I went blond at ANOTHER salon (Not Strands) and it looked terrible! I told Laura I wanted to go back something more brown. I thought I would have to go back to one color but... She is SO talented. She blended my blonde highlights with brown and now I am a brunette with a little bit of blonde for dimension! I have never loved my hair color more! Janette gave me the worst haircut of my entire life, and I am 60 years old. I asked to have about 2 inches cut off of the length, slightly below the shoulders. She took more like 6 inches. I was dumbfounded and the rest of the haircut was choppy and lifeless, seriously horrific, as if a child cut my hair with dull scissors. I have no explanation for what happened, or why she would treat a customer so callously. I was just horrified and disappointed. Everyone tells me my hair will grow out, but everyone is in agreement with me that the haircut itself is way below average. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS I went to get my hair permanently straightened and chose the Avita treatment. I had called before hand and was told by the lady on the phone that it would be anywhere from $100-$200 dollars. Based on the length of my hair she told me it would be approximately $150 (for shoulder length hair). I found this to be quite reasonable so I decided to go. After I finished getting my hair done I went to the register to pay and was told the total was $380. Apparently the lady on the phone gave me the wrong information and the treatment actually costs $100 per hour. The ladies there conned me into paying double the price I was told and were incredibly rude. I have never been to a business filled with such liars and manipulative people. I have been here a few time since i have lived in Davis. Twice to get a Brazilian Blowout from Jeanette (which turned out GREAT both times). I also came here recently to get my haircut fixed (which had been kinda botched by another salon in Davis the day before). I did not have an appointment, but there was an opening when I got there. Joy did a great job fixing my hair cut. I was fully prepared to pay full price for another haircut, but she offered to cut it dry for half-price since I had just gotten it cut the day before. Also, side-note, I thought it was pretty classy that she didn't ask where or by whom I had my hair cut the day before. read more

I loved the aromatherapy that started the visit, and the relaxing shoulder and head massage. My hair looks great and exactly what I wanted. Wow! Is all I can say, I have been to other salons and my hair never came out as I expected or felt so good. Anteinnatte is absolutely the BEST! Absolutely fantastic experience. I usually get quick hair trims at SuperCuts and other cheap places, but I wanted a certain style and layering done, so I decided to splurge a little. Strands had a deal where you get $10 off if it's your first time. Haircuts at upscale salons like this usually run around $55... With my discount, it was $35. Not only did I get a haircut, but a scalp/neck/shoulder massage, shampoo/conditioner, and styling. Talk about bang for your buck. Lloyd was my stylist, and the man was magic. I usually don't expect my hair to look exactly like the pictures I bring in, but for once, it did. He talked to me through the whole thing, making sure it was what I wanted. He offered me a cup of tea, and the massage was seriously a great little perk. It was the best salon experience I have ever had. read more

I bought a Groupon deal for a haircut and deep conditioning treatment, though I'd never been to this salon before. I did a little research before I called to make my appointment and the consensus was that Joy is the person to see. Not that I have seen anyone else there for comparison, but Joy did a great job on my hair, so I agree with the masses! I have very thick hair and she was able to thin it without overdoing it, and did a nice job layering it. Many people just can't cut thick hair well, but she had a great technique and I'm happy with my cut. You know you're in trouble if you have thick hair and your cut is done in 20 minutes - this was not the case with Joy. She took time to do a thorough job. After observing the new hairstyles of my friends who visited Strands, I decided to get my newest style done here. I wanted the fringe bangs while keeping my damaged hair as long as I could. (Prior to this, I went to random salons that insisted on butchering my hair. Sadface.) I made an appointment with Lily who is awesome!! She listened to what I wanted, envisioned what she was going to do and most importantly explained EVERYTHING to me. I definitely trusted her. She was able to keep my hair long and healthy, give me volume, and the bangs that I desired. Best haircut of my life so far with the most thorough and personal service I've ever experienced. She took the time to talk to me and explain step by step what she was doing rather than chop at my hair in silence (while I watch in horror) as others have done. I enthusiastically recommend Lily! She also does complimentary bang trims inbetween hair cuts which are lifesavers!! It may seem a little pricey but I think it's a good investment. read more

AWFUL! The woman who did my hair, Jeanette, just redid my highlights. I had never been there before, so I was trying to explain what I had before and while I was trying to explain, she cut me off and told me she knew what to do. Instead of being able to relax, i kept my eye on what she was doing, and good thing I was because she was not doing what I wanted and only then was I able to explain what I wanted. After washing out the product, it looks as if nothing was done, it looks more natural and like I paid $70 for nothing to be done at all. I am very disappointed with the results and intend to never return. I caution anyone to not be fooled with their salon and spa front and neck massage included in your appointment, because it does not match the kind of service I expected. read more

I am definitely a Strands convert! They really realize that they call themselves a salon and spa and act accordingly. When you first walk in, they offer you a drink while you wait. They give you a neck and shoulder massage before the wash out if you're dyeing your hair. If you're not they give you a scalp massage and treatment. I had Janette, who did a wonderful job with my hair. I love the color that she mixed for me and she did a great job with the cut off of a very lax description. I didn't really know what I wanted other than "something different but keeping it fairly long." She managed to make a dramatic difference with only a few inches off, which is much more than I can say about one of the more expensive salons in the area. She probably gave me the best haircut I've ever had (even better than the SF expensive places too). She totally redid my bangs and knew right away that I had cut them myself years ago, yet no other hairstylist had ever "fixed" them before. I LOVE Janette Carrera! She has cut my hair four times now and I have been pleased each time. I had the same cut (long layers) for about ten years and realized I needed a change, but was terrified because I was not sure what suited my face. Janette was incredibly understanding and helpful, she agreed that parting my hair to the right and giving me side bangs would look good. I was apprehensive, but she talked me through the process, asking me to look and give feedback along the way, as to make sure I was ok with the length. I LOVE my new haircut, it is perfect, stylish, and exactly what I needed! I just went in to get my bangs trimmed and she took me immediately, finished in less than 4 minutes, and as always was professional, nice, and genuine. Janette is MY stylist from now on! I've been there four times a while back, when I was still living in Davis. First time was with Lily, who I believe has left the building, for highlights and color. I wanted a change and honestly I couldn't have been happier. Didn't keep it that way forever, but I got what I wanted! She was sweet, conversational, friendly, and really paid attention to what I wanted as opposed to other hair dressers who think they know best all the time. Blah. The second time I went was just to get retouched with a... what is it called? tint? Idk. Whatevs, they were both good times. The third and fourth time I went I think I had Joy? I don't know for sure, but that's what I'm going with. These two times, I got trims. Thank you for knowing what a trim is. Thank you for not chopping off half of my hair and applauding yourself for making it "healthy." My length pretty much stayed the same, but she somehow magically got rid of a lot of the split and dry ends, which is exactly what I wanted! THANK YOU FOR RESPECTING AND LISTENING TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. The only reason I'm giving them 4 stars instead of 5 is because $50 for a trim.... although it's pretty typical, it's not exactly the ideal situation for a broke college student. But I'd rather pay $50 and get what I want than pay $20 and cry for a month over how dumb my hair looks! In the end, it was worth it for me.
