Have had three absolutely perfect meals here & am slowly making my way through the cocktail list, but so far everything is delicious (if you skip on the Freaky French, I'm sorry for your loss). Gorgeous and creative flavors across the board with a creative and focused menu. Don't pass on the salads (both vegan, as is the lemon sorbet)--I think their take on a wedge is my new favorite salad in Brooklyn, absurdly high praise... Everyone there has been so lovely each time I've been in--an attentive and kind crew in a gorgeous space, with an outrageously photogenic bathroom. Finally was able to make it over to this place after hearing about it a ton and I wasn't disappointed! The restaurant has a really nice vibe and they played a nice mix of old school hip hop and R&B. I think it's perfect for a date night or a catch-up with friends with a smaller group (they don't have a ton of tables so I wouldn't recommend for a big group). Service was quick and our server was really knowledgable about the menu and gave us great recommendations. Here's the rundown of everything we ate: -Charbroiled Oysters: These were really tasty! Not the best I've had but satisfied my craving for them. Hit the right balance of butter and garlic without overpowering the oyster. -BBQ Shrimp: Didn't eat these personally but heard they were pretty good. The shrimp were massive and seasoned well but the sauce was missing something/was a little looser than expected, but it had good flavor. -Smoked fish dip: This was a standout for us. So flavorful but not overly fishy and the house-made crackers were a perfect vehicle for the dip. There is a lot of dill flavor here but we loved it! -Fried Shrimp Loaf: The milk bread on this was superdelicate and held up the perfectly crisp shrimp very well. The sauce on here was also nice and gave the sandwich some oomph. -Blackened Swordfish Belly: Skin on the fish was nice and crisp and the inside was moist. I loved how the sweetness of the fish paired with the mustard cream. After eating heavy for the other dishes, I thought this was the perfect entree. Hard to not compare this place to the other NOLA style restaurants in the city. While it isn't the best of them, it's near the top of my list. They do seafood really well! Visiting NYC and I wanted to choose a restaurant near my friend's place in Brooklyn. Strange Delight was highly rated for brunch on Eater and my bf was born in Southern Louisiana so I figured we could give it a try. I wasn't really sure what to expect from the menu but it was great! The space is much larger than it appears from the outside - there is a whole back room. Our server was awesome - so friendly and helpful in guiding our order. Their coffee and cocktails are delicious. The food is also good, though I wish I had chosen a few things differently. I wasn't a fan of the runniness of mac and cheese, and the kale was a bit tough. But the grilled shrimp were excellent, the cornbread was tender and perfectly accompanied by the honey butter. And the thing that capped off the meal was the rice pudding. Our server convinced us to get it, and they were so right! If you like rice pudding at all, please get this!! I would deduct one star for the kale and mac and cheese, but I added it back just for the rice pudding. read more

A great oyster and seafood addition to the Fort Greene restaurant scene! For a spot just weeks into its open, Strange Delight is already firing on all cylinders. The menu has something for everyone, but stays true to its Louisiana roots, focusing on southern flavors and preparations. Some of our standouts included the Charbroiled Oysters, Oysters Bienville, BBQ Shrimp, Hush Puppies, and the Sword Fish Belly. The fish dips paired with the seasoned saltines -- downright addictive (ask for extra saltines)! This is the kind of place where everything on the menu looks appetizing, and we'll definitely be back to taste everything else. The cocktails were also excellent, as was the wine selection. Our server Nicole was such a treat too: knowledgable about the food, thoughtful about our meal's pacing, and spot-on with her recommendations... in fact, she suggested a wine pairing (Forlorn Hope's Queen of the Sierra Amber) that went beautifully with our meal, so much so that we ended up ordering a second bottle. The vibes were also everything a modern oyster bar calls for: fun without frills. We had a blast sitting in the back room where the atmosphere was buzzy, retro, refined, but still relaxed. Been here three times and had an excellent meal each time. The shrimp loaf is one of the best sandwich I've ever had. Order it. Hell - order 2! Also would recommend all of the raw bar. That said, I was not a big fan of the charbroiled oysters, having tried all of the variations over my visits. Still a solid 5 stars because the shrimp sandwich is so damn good. It's 2 days later and I'm still randomly thinking about the tasty meal I had at Strange Delight this week. This newish restaurant is vibey, easy to get to, flavorful and has stellar service. Monia was our waiter and they were attentive, informative and kind. The supporting staff - bussers, hosts and servers always kept our table clear and water glasses full - the little things that really make for a lovely dining experience. My two favorites were the shrimp loaf (similar to a po'boy but on sandwich bread) & the chargrilled oysters. The shrimp loaf was so good I didn't even need to add the crystal's hot sauce (a Louisiana favorite) to it, but I couldn't miss the chance to have a dash. The chargrilled oysters had just enough butter and flavor and were nicely sized, we used our complimentary bread to soak up all the goodness. The butter that came with the bread was the perfect spreading temperature and the complimentary bread pudding at the end of the meal was a nice was to finish. The only things keeping me from rating 5 stars is the fact that I didn't try the cocktails yet, and menu is concise and limited on a fresh / non fried veggie option, but everything was cooked with care and intention and I can't wait to come back and try more. It would be great if there was a formal dessert menu too because the bread pudding was a tease, but I respect a place that sticks to what they know they can do well. Most of the seating in the front room is counter or bar stools, so if you prefer a standard seat in the back bar room make sure to mention when you make your reservation. Me and my partner split a seafood tower (the smoked fish dip with crackers were to die for!!) and a seafood combo (catfish nuggets with broccoli rabe salad, mac and cheese, and cornbread). strange delight is a recently added restaurant to the fort greene restaurant scene. they are a taste of new orleans in brooklyn. i recommend reservations but i got lucky as a solo diner and was able to sit at the bar. their menu is primarily seafood focused on oysters and shrimp in the raw, charbroiled and po boy form. it's a cool vibe - diner in the front but feels like a 70s living room in the back. the staff is helpful and kind. it's great! read more

The service here is above and beyond. Vibes were a perfect mix of vintage and modern with intimate seating - but not cramped. The food! The food! The food! Everything we ate was delish. Started with the family tower, which has a great mix of lite bites to start, followed by a salad that was just the right amount of surprising spice. I could have eaten a dozen+ of the charbroil oysters myself. They were so good! Let me start by saying the place has a very cool vibe and the service is excellent. Now comes the but, food was not up to the price point and what we came for was not as advertised. It's hard to find chargrilled oysters in NYC but here they but they were on the menu but cooked in an oven and they came out wet and had no crisp on top as if were truly chargriled on an actual grill. At $62 a dozen come on do them right . Next next we had the fish dip, very tasty but a very small portion- more crackers than dip. For the mains wife had salmon and it was cooked right but a very small portion for $37.00.My catfish sandwich was good but I wish they didn't use nuggets as they lose the flavor of the fish. About the best part of this restaurant is the fact that I parked literally right out front. I had been looking forward to trying this place after a doctor's appointment in the area. I figured I would come in for dinner before a long ride home, thinking that perfect parking spot would bring a perfect meal. That was not the case. Let me give context about who I am - I go on these splurges wanting a full meal experience: cocktails, appetizers, entrées. I had a reservation for later, but they managed to seat me at the bar in the back. I sat in a nook on a stool, perfectly fine, loved it. I could hang my coat up. Everything seemed great. Then came this bartender who had a dual role - bartender and server. I asked my usual questions that all my friends know about - do you have grenadine? He said no. Could I get a sugar rim on my margarita? No again. No problem, except here is where I started seeing the first signs of distance. As he took my order, he kept moving away, doing other things. Maybe he had drinks lined up to make, but here is the real issue - if someone is sitting at your bar with a full place setting (fork, knife, napkin, plate), that means you are also providing server duties. That service was absent. It really bothered me how he could not stand in front of me to take an order. He had to multitask during every interaction. The margarita was decent enough without my usual grenadine to make it Cadillac style. I ordered Oysters Rockefeller and charbroiled oysters, half dozen each - yes, I like to eat. Again, he took that order while flying through the bartending space. A nice woman served my meal. The oysters were very dense, large. The Rockefeller had too much vinegar, no nut substance, not my usual take on that dish. The charbroiled ones were better - should have ordered a dozen of those instead. He took my menu while I was eating, maybe even before my appetizers arrived. When I asked about their dips, he gave that same fly-by-night service, answering questions while doing something else. But I noticed with other customers, that was not the case. They got his full attention, small talk, maybe he knew them. He recommended the fish dip, but I chose the crab dip - crab dip for $35, absolutely criminal. The accompanying chips were sparse, so I asked for more bread, which helped make this horrible dip somewhat edible. Mind you, I had not eaten all day because of my doctor's appointment. This was supposed to be my meal, but I had to stop at the dip. The food was so subpar, I could not justify more expenses. Another bartender came in later, more attentive, thank goodness. I ordered a glass of rosé somewhere between all this - it was barely chilled, just okay. The bill came to $172. Ouch. I am used to spending money, but not when everything is mediocre. As I got my check, I turned to see him chatting and laughing with a couple next to me. Did I get any of that attention? No. I was just some person in the corner to throw a menu at and serve drinks to. My recommendation: Do not go here. Save your money for a beautiful summer trip somewhere with really good seafood, or that trip to New Orleans for proper oysters. What frustrates me most is how places like this rely on gimmicks and atmosphere, but when you actually examine what you are eating versus what you are paying, it is pure highway robbery. Despite everything, I left above 20% tip because that is who I am. People have bad days. Maybe they dislike how I dress or my general vibe. Everyone needs to survive in this world. His colleague who actually looked me in the eye and stood present while speaking deserved it more.Message to Strange Delight: Put more items on that menu, immediately. If you think this limited selection suffices for this neighborhood, fine, but it speaks nothing to quality. And get a bartender who understands service - when there is a full place setting at the bar, that customer deserves equal attention as any other. Two stars. I will never return. Those charbroiled oysters showed potential, but that $35 crab dip with zero real crab? Laughable. To that bartender: your service needs vast improvement. And the greens were painfully under seasoned with a blind kick of spice. As a fan of anything New Orleans and anything fishy and anything funky, I knew we had to try this place on my trip to nyc. We had a reservation, but were seated at the bar in the back of the restaurant. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Both bartenders were lovely and fun and happy to make recommendations. We are so glad they did - we don't think we would have ordered the standouts on the menu without their guidance. While there is a lot of fried items on the menu, we really only balanced this to one item, which definitively was the perfect balance. We ordered the charbroiled oysters, spicy bbq oysters, Chinese broccoli salad, and the fried shrimp loaf, then asked for recs. Our bartender, Tony, steered us to the bbq shrimp, stating if you had to order one thing on the menu, this would be it, for the flavors and the experience of peeling and eating the whole shrimp. He also recommended waiting to eat your bread until able to dip it in the sauce. He also recommended the swordfish belly, stating he doesn't even like fish and this is cooked to perfection, balanced with a side salad. We are sooo glad he did. The last two turned out to be our favorite items on the menu. So much flavor packed into them. I left smelling saucy but completely happy. Also, loved the Chinese broccoli salad as a green to round out the meal - complex, nutty flavors and went with all of the fish well. You end with complimentary bread pudding, which was excellent. The catfish and fries were tasty and the dipping sauce was so delicious. The bbq shrimp was so good too! The bread it came with for dipping the sauce was amazing too! The oyster Rockefeller was alright....my first time trying it and was a little overwhelmed by the herbs. The cocktail "having fun since 1933" was underwhelming. I could've done without that. The wine selection is great and the staff is Awesome they lost a star with the music selection (slightly offensive and I'm flexible) the optics were very bad for the selection. Had to yelp this. Disappointed by how pretentious and uncomfortable our dinner was here. I'm a Nola native and expected the hospitality and authenticity which was not the vibe. The hostess/manager? was completely dismissive of our massively long wait time for drink & food. This, would not be that big of a deal usually but was seemingly ignored as tables around us were served. Our server was extremely overwhelmed and impossible to get a hold of. I was so very excited for this place but after our $200+ evening here was left feeling pretty underwhelmed. Food is good but maybe turned off by the atmosphere and service. We have had the most unpleasant experience before we even tried the food. We arrived 15 min earlier to make sure that we are not late. We were asked to wait outside for 30 min after which time we were told that our table was not ready and who knows if and when it would be ready. My husband is an older gentleman who cannot stand for an hour as a supplicant. No restaurant is worth such a treatment. We hope the food is worth anything but it no longer matters. My husband and I went yesterday from NJ because he saw it online (Facebook). The place is nice, and the service was excellent, however it was Nothing special. The Oysters were outstanding, tasty and well cooked. The having fun since 1933 drink was good, and the food is cooked to order (which is a PLUS). I had the Fried Shrimp Loaf, and it was just okay. My husband had the Blackened Swordfish Belly and with crabmeat and he really like it. However, he paid $30.00 for the crabmeat but it was a small amount. He also got the The Salad with Fried Oysters for 32.00 a complete waste of money. It was a huge heap of iceberg lettuces, and a couple of pieces of Oysters (not complaining) but if your going to charge 30.00 give people their monies worth. But what really turned me off, I was going to order bread pudding and my waiter told me it was on the house, so my husband asked if he can take his home, and the waiter to him it was one per customer. Come on; we both sat down and drunk and ate, they should offer it to everyone that is a paying customer, not just one person! Huge turnoff. My husband and I had dinner at Strange Delight last night and we already can't wait to go back. The space is beautiful and spacious. The service was incredibly thoughtful, everyone was in high spirits and the flow of the meal was perfect. We have both been to New Orleans several times and are obsessed with the food there so we've been looking forward to this meal. The clear Brooklyn take on New Orleans food was appreciated throughout all of the dishes. The charbroiled oysters were some of the best I've had, they had the perfect amount of spice to them. The milk bread on the shrimp loaf sandwich was a nice twist, and all of the ingredients were balanced. I wanted the Chinese broccoli salad to offset some of the richness of the other items and was honestly surprised at how well it complemented everything. The fried saltines with the crab dip felt like a thoughtful touch. The cocktails are on point, husband had the classic sazerac and I had the non alcoholic hurricane and soda.
