I've been here a few times so far, and each time has been a treat. Some standbys are the sea vegetable salad (super fresh and tasty) and the hummus. This place was great! I got the fancy nachos and they were amazing! The service left a little to be desired as we had to flag down our waiter multiple times. They also put automatic 20% gratuity on the check which probably contributes to the service issue. However, they seemed to be understaffed and were dealing with it as best they could. Quaint little spot that underlies the hype around this new vegan hotspot. The food was very good. The soup of the day (lentil and coconut milk) was ridiculously good. We also enjoyed the samosas which featured great chutney and the sopes which our server recommended. All flavors were spot on and you could tell a great deal of attention goes into crafting each dish. Only real negative was the mixed drinks. One was made incorrectly and the other just wasn't that good. Noticed several other customers stirring their drinks and not really drinking them too. I've been living on the East Side for about 9 months now and I've always been meaning to try this place because it has such a cute atmosphere and I love vegan food! From my first visit, I was very dissatisfied and uninterested in returning for another dining experience. My friend and I ordered a carrot queso to begin. This was the highlight of our meal. It had great texture, flavor, and a dollop of pico de gallo on the top. Served with tortilla chips, it was absolutely delicious! Our second course that arrived was a mushroom paste of sorts that had some onion, red peppers, and whole mushrooms in the paste. It was served with pita chips. The flavor was reminiscent of Indian and Middle Eastern food. While it had a fine flavor, personally it was not my favorite dish. However, I will chalk this one up to personal preference, not poor craftsmanship in the recipe. Our third dish to arrive was a Roasted Cauliflower, served with a tahini sauce topped with shallots. My friend and I were most excited about this menu item, but were a little wary because it was priced at $18. The tahini sauce was entirely too bitter and inedible. Neither one of us were a fan after we sampled it. The whole head of cauliflower was roasted on the top with a light paprika seasoning, but the entirety was overcooked and soggy. Additionally, past the top layer of the cauliflower, it was unseasoned. It would be easy to cook something of higher quality in your own home. Our final and fourth course arrived while we were picking at the Roasted Cauliflower. Our last dish was an arancini with cashew cheese and a tomato sauce. The texture of the arancini was quite good; however the flavor was entirely off-putting. The cashew cheese was smoked to the point where it overshadowed every other flavor in the dish. It was entirely unappetizing. After one bite, my friend and I could not continue on with the dish. Our server stopped to check-in after our final dish arrived and I informed her that we were dissatisfied with our last dish (the arancini) because of its smoked flavor. I made a point to say we didn't eat any of it aside from our initial bite, so she could remove it from our table. This dish was $16 and we expected a comp on the dish or at least a substitution because we did not eat it. When our server came back, all she said was that the chef's explanation was that the menu stated that the cashew cheese was smoked. Our bill was already nearing $60, so the restaurant would have still made a decent profit off our dining experience without the arancini on the bill. However, as an experienced restaurant worker, I know that it is common decency to comp a meal or offer a replacement if a customer does not like their meal and they do not eat it. For the quality of their meals, their dishes are outrageously overpriced. This situation makes me feel like this restaurant only cares about making a profit and not about the dining experience that they are providing for their patrons. This whole experience and the lack of quality food is enough to not return. I had high hopes for Strangetown, but if you are looking for quality vegan food and stellar dining experience, go to Celesta up the road. They never disappoint and every dish is absolutely delectable! Do not waste your time and money at Strangetown. read more

On a recent trip to Milwaukee, we stopped here for a drink and I was so in love with this spot! Strange Town is the perfect place to grab a cocktail and some amazing vegan food. The menu was filled with fresh ingredients and dishes of many cultures, so there is definitely something for everyone. They also have an extensive wine list, but I personally ordered a grapefruit tequila cocktail, which was the special, and it served as a delightful afternoon refreshment after a long morning of exploring nearby. The staff here is friendly, the place is covered in plants, and there is always an awesome soundtrack playing on vinyl, providing for a lovely experience all-around. I came in here with a couple girlfriends just to check it out. I am a vegetarian, so I always enjoy giving vegan restaurants a try. Strange Town did a great job with their food and drinks. They have an excellent selection of cocktails, wine and beer that would fit anyone's needs. The food was exceptional. This is a small/large plates type of restaurant, so everything is up for sharing - which you will want to do! Pretty much everything on the menu looked great. I ended up splitting the arancini and th e aloo gobhi chaat. They were both incredible. I know they also like to switch things up seasonally, so I look forward to coming back to continue to try great items. There are not a ton of tables, so you will definitely want to consider a reservation, especially on the weekends. It's also quite small, so large parties probably aren't a good fit. My new favorite Milwaukee spot hands down. You don't have to be vegan to like this place. It's seriously magical- from the menu to the drinks to the decor. Just had the most amazing dinner celebrating a friends birthday, which included a free crème brûlée. All of us don't know why we didn't try it sooner! Today my friends and I ventured out to try some new food. As vegetarians, we were ecstatic about a new welcoming restaurant. Although we could not find a website made by them, we still decided to go. After entering Strange Town, we were told our option to get the food to-go wasn't available (despite seeing to-go boxes by the register). The menu we found through a random website was not updated, as the vegetarian options that initially brought us in were not there. We ordered the $16 potatoes, and were disappointed with our results. I literally could have gone to my local grocery store and bought a bag of mini potatoes and threw some sauce on it for the same experience. The price of $16 is incredibly frustrating. Both the portion size and taste did not reflect this unnecessary cost. Finally, I recognize that the menu did say they would add the gratuity, but I assumed the price would be $19.20, as that would be the additional 20% added to the cost. The total instead was $20.16, which is fine. 2 of us gave the server $21. The server never asked if we wanted the change back, and pocketed the change. The overall service was unprofessional, our server talked to us with his hand over his mouth because he was eating. He did not seat or really talked to us, it surely was a strange experience. A $60 bill for 3 small bowls of potatoes and water to drink is annoying. I wish we had a better experience, it was incredibly disappointing. I was excited to try this spot out since it had been suggested to be a place with a noteworthy vegan selection. The food was quite good which was very pleasing. We had the Sicilian pizza and a salad with shaved fennel (I can't remember the name). I was stunned at how much was being charged for a salad about the size of a larger side salad ($10) and three roughly 5x6 inch slices of pizza ($12!!!). The portions were small and over priced considering the dishes don't take long to prepare and the ingredients used. The environment is cramped and the ambiance is average. I did appreciate vinyl spinning and the musical selection. I am not inclined to go back here though, most especially because of the pricing of their dishes. read more

We ordered the mushroom tarting, which had a rich umami mushroom flavor and tasty cashew cheese. We also ordered an Indian dish- I cannot remember the name. We visited the weekend they opened. The space is interesting and gorgeous and the service was really great. Pricing was very reasonable, almost a bargain. However, we arrived a few hours before the kitchen closed but the dishes we ordered were lukewarm and the fingerlings were dried and crusty from sitting under a lamp for awhile. The dishes all came out at the same time less than ten minutes after we ordered them. We plan on going back and trying the whole menu but we really hope the food is at least warm this time, if not made fresh. My husband and I enjoyed a late lunch at Strange Town. The waiter was a good guy and very helpful in answering all of our questions. We enjoyed the house salad (incredible beet dressing), sweet potato and kale samosas and green chutney hummus with really good warm pita. Everything was excellent and very fresh with some nice, unexpected flavor combinations. A highlight was my golden milk; a mug of steamed milk goodness spiced with turmeric, cinnamon, maple syrup and other deliciousness. A friend and I came in on a Wednesday, so there was a woman spinning some records (tunes were on point!) and they feature 25% off special for all wines brewed by woman (on wed.)We didn't know that reservations were recommended, but we were able to get seats at the bar. The bartender, Pam, was SO lovely and helpful. We tried 3 plates; the Sicilian salad, some enchilada type of deal, and the ~TACU TACU~. We continued on the "treat yoself" route and got some creme brûlée for dessert. Everything was crazy crazy good and flavorful as could be. I had some gin cocktail with elderflower and lime- daaank. They had a great wine selection. Okay beer selection. On my first visit to Strange Town I had the eggplant involtini; it was delicious. The music was also a treat.

On our first visit to Strange Town, we ordered mushroom tartine, aloo gobhi chaat, arrancini, eggplant involtini, and a raspberry "creme" brulee. We wanted to get a sense of the breadth of the menu and I'm glad we did. Our favorite dishes were the chaat and arrancini, but the tartine and involtini were excellent as well. The cuisines represented on the sparse menu were very disparate, which made it a little jarring to try to sample the items in a tapas style (e.g., going from Indian to Italian within a few minutes). Overall, the food was amazing although the raspberry creme brulee was very disappointing. The tap beer selection was odd and if I remember correctly, none were local beers, which seems odd to me given our context. (For instance, there was an Icelandic stout on tap). The service was excellent and our server was very patient with us as I asked her for clarification on about 5 different menu items. The food prices were quite reasonable. I realize this review is all over the place, but I wanted to comment on various aspects of the restaurant. As a vegetarian, I am over the moon about this plant-based restaurant being available to us Eastsiders and can appreciate the risks they are taking with their innovative menu. They could improve their tap beer and dessert selections, but the main offerings were fantastic. read more
