We took a cassoulet cooking class with the head chef and owner of Braise, and it was a really fun and memorable evening. From the first tasty starter bite paired with wine, we knew we were in for something special. The chef walked us through the history of cassoulet, including the "holy trinity," and provided all of the recipes to take home. The steps and processes were clearly explained, well organized, and easy to follow, even with so many layers involved. The dish itself was incredibly complex and flavorful, and it was fascinating to see how it all came together. I had no idea there was a school tucked into the belly of Braise, which made the experience feel even more unique. We also made a salad to accompany the cassoulet, and we left with a generous to-go container to enjoy later. I would absolutely recommend taking a class at Braise. This was a lovely and thoughtful Christmas gift from our daughter, and it was especially fun because cassoulet was a dish neither of us had ever tried before. Got a last minute reservation on a Saturday night. I looked at past reviews - there were some low reviews from 10 years ago that are no longer valid. We sampled a lot of different things on the menu and all were really good! I wish we had more people with us to try and sample more things, but I guess we will have to come back again. Shrimp toast, turnip cake, Humba, beef and couscous were all outstanding. And get this - when I was looking to choose a wine, Jason actually recommended the lowest price option (which was perfect). So - I've been a student at the Semester at Braise, which is a 10-week-long culinary program. It has been FANTASTIC and I've learned so much, but I had never eaten at the restaurant! My hubby has been nice enough drive me in to Milwaukee for a couple of the class nights. We went early enough last week to eat dinner at Braise and WOW! We sat at the bar (fantastic bartender and a new to Braise bartender who already knew the menu!) and ordered a few items to share. The Steamed Pork Buns were SOOOOO GOOOD! It is no wonder that they are the ONLY item that is a fixture on the seasonally changing menu. I will ALWAYS order these when eating at Braise. We also tried the Coconut Curry Soup and the BLT Crumpet. They were both so delicious and stand-outs on their own. AND - - - everything at Braise is made in-house! The buns for the Pork Buns and even the crumpets! The Secret Handshake menu is fun and only available at the bar and is constantly changing. We tried the mystery beer to accompany our dinner. I went to Braise for the first time last night. It was a Friday at 6PM- we had a reservation and were seated right away. My first impressions: I love the historic building the restaurant is in. I didn't see a parking lot but there was plenty of street parking. When I first walked in, I noticed the beautiful bar and warm atmosphere. The hostess was friendly. We sat upstairs and I just remember the lights seeming really bright. Our waitress was very friendly and soft spoken. She was knowledgeable about the menu. Our food was great. We shared a couple of appetizers and main entrees, along with the chocolate dome for dessert. The steamed pork buns were a hit with our table! My friend ordered the Biryani Chicken, which came with A LOT of rice. I ordered the Roasted Pork Loin. I thought it was good, I liked the creamy celery root puree it was served with. Regarding their menu, I love the farm to table concept and was pleased to hear they do their shopping locally. Their menu changes with the foods they get in daily. My only complaint is the available root vegetables in most of the dishes were potatoes. I was hoping for more of a variety. Braise is a very nice rustic farm to table from scratch place. Pretty small menu. We started with the charcuterie board and it was pretty tasty although I could have done without the chicken liver. Everything else on the board was delish. I had the Cod Curry as the main and it was quite nice. Tasty but not overpowering. The lady had the pork croquettes - I had one and it was delish. My wife's little brother got married and rented out the entire upstairs area for the small(ish) reception. It is absolutely a gem! There were probably about 30 of us that tested the capabilities of two bartenders and a handful of waitstaff. My wife and I sat at a communal table (the wood top from a bowling alley) and it was still an intimate dinner but with lots of good energy from other diners. The food was really great. The pork dumplings are a must have. The Arancini were delicious. The beet salad was OK but I wouldn't order it again. It was mostly just greens with barely any of the tasty beers and feta that was the reason I ordered it. Entree was a pork shoulder over polenta. Rich but delicious! Our first experience with Braise was a takeout order during the pandemic, and We finally dined at the restaurant for the first time this week. We were a bit surprised that the restaurant was filled up quickly that evening even though it was in the middle of the week. There was only one server for the customers upstairs, but she seemed very professional and able to attend to the needs of every table quickly. Both of her two recommendations turned out to be very good. We ordered 4 appetizers plus a main dish to share, and the total quantity of food was significantly more than we could finish, with leftovers (two steamed dumplings and half of the main course) almost enough for another meal. The dishes that we liked most were the Steamed Pork Buns and the Almond Crusted Trout. The toasted pork cubes with scallion vinaigrette in the Pork Buns was very tasty. Almost every restaurant in the city has a dish with trout, but the Almond Crusted Trout at Braise stands out for its tasty and unusual flavor combinations. The prices of the dishes were also reasonable. So, we consider Braise to have a high quality-to-price ratio. read more

Cute small restaurant tucked in Bayview. The menu changes seasonally, but a few stoke items such as pork buns usually stay in the menu. It's fun to order several small plates and share. We shared 4 small plates among the 3 of us: Smoked chicken mole arepa, beef salad, pork buns, and mushroom tortellini. We were feeling quite full after the small dishes, so we decided to finish off with 2 desserts instead. We are happy with most the dishes. My favorite might be the pork buns. The prices for the small plates are also very reasonable. We sat and chatted for hours after the meal, the waiters came over to fill out our cups several times. It had been many years since our last visit, and so glad we went back! Decided to celebrate a family dinner. Have a couple pre teens who really enjoy good food, and that is exactly what we got. And more. Saturday service and was a slow night, which I certainly hope is a rarity. Food, service, all was just perfect. Fun night, we all enjoyed it tremendously. Especially the surprise for the kids, more on that later. We went for a sharing selection, several small plates and also two entrees, all to share. Great decision. Basics like the charcuterie board were excellent. A seasonal apple preserve with great seeded crackers, two excellent cheeses, some house cured thick ham and salami and red onions. Flavors played great when building an open face cracker sandwich. Kids had a blast trying different combinations for that. Blistered shishitos with creamed corn and crispy prosciutto was a standout. Great mix of just a little heat, sweet, salty, savory. So, so good. Everyone enjoyed this one. Steamed pork buns were great. Perfect for some salty pork with sliced crushed peanuts and a pillow soft bun. Yum. Could use a slight sauce option to drizzle for moisture but was still good without. Maybe like a spiced plum sauce for fall? Smoked trout parfait was tasty but a little tame. Wanted to taste the fish a bit more. But the onion forward pancake that was the base. That really made it work. Had a braised feef that was pretty good. A little heavier on the sweet potato than meat. Probably because of how crazy beef prices are right now. Then a pork loin with what was essentially a very elevated succotash from ingredients you wouldn't normally think of. Gave it a ton of layered flavor that really complemented the pork itself. Real standout dish. Finished with a quite tasty banana, apple, cinnamon bread pudding. Seasonally ideal. But the star of dessert was the panna cotta. It said rosemary peach, but seemed to be topped with a couple of gingered, macerated strawberries. That was amazing. Now to the surprise. Want to reiterate it was a very slow Saturday night, which was a shame to them but a huge benefit for us. Towards the end of the meal, the hostess gave the kids a tour of the kitchen. Wanted to share all about it, what goes into running a restaurant. They had a blast. Want to be careful here and not make everyone think that will happen for them as well. Braise is flannel wrapped in silk . I thought it was a fancy joint, cooking school and all, with pretensions to be more than it is. Wrong! Braise is down to earth, relaxed, Cream City true, and perfect for a weekday boozer with food. The difference? Braise's food is great, not good, I mean Chicago/NYC great. Their kitchen produced the best dishes I have had in Milwaukee since our return in May, and the prices are reasonable, bordering on inexpensive. Their P.R. Is too professional. Braise has more in common with Camino than Morel. Kyle and Alex, two Milwaukee dudes took care of us at the bar, which is large and accessible. Wine, beer and booze are integral to the Braise concept. Kyle served me two Mezcals, but I fell in love with one of them and the other bottle felt rejected. Sorry. Kyle knows his beer, booze and wine. The other patrons were all "down home" Milwaukee people, and we discussed music and all sorts of shit. Laughs were loud and proud. The kitchen produces creative and flavorful dishes. Milwaukee's Sanford, one of the city's finest restaurants, was the incubator for one of the proprietors of Braise, and that culinary wizardry is evident. The steamed pork buns and the barbecue pork are not to be missed. I adored the pork, and I'm Jewish. The dish tasted so good, it was worth the risk. I'll atone on Yom Kipper. Yet, the trout and risotto were almost as scrumptious. Portions are humongous, and we brought more than half home to enjoy another day. The only misstep, if there is one, was the decor does not meet my European modern ideal. But hey, that's me, and I'm odd. Go and enjoy Braise. It's one of Milwaukee's best restaurants. My husband made a reservation for two for my birthday dinner this year. We had never been before so we were excited to try the menu available. We fell in love with the polenta dish in the small plates menu. We ordered the charcuterie and another small plate and ended with main plates. We both agreed the small plates were better and we would likely just order more small plates to split if we came back. We ordered the risotto and eggplant steak as the main dishes. They were good but not great. After my husband reminded the hostess and waitress, we were disappointed the waitress did not wish me a happy birthday or offer any kind of drink/dessert as it was a special occasion for us. Not a big deal but just something that would have made the night more special. Sit at the bar to enjoy fun conversations and witness Flan and Evan crafting up the amazing cocktails behind the bar. Even if you don't see a drink on the menu that catches your eyes, they can make anything you are feeling or give them the freedom to surprise you with a "dealers choice" cocktail. Braise was on my list for awhile when I moved to Milwaukee, and I'm thrilled I finally got to test it out! I went alone for a solo dinner - and it's the perfect spot to post up by the bar and enjoy (especially since you get access to a "Secret Password" small bites menu). I enjoyed a gin martini (bartender was great about asking preferences) and a few small items - Smoked Trout Chowder, Garlic Bread, and Roasted Olives. This is a foodie paradise I went here on a date and really liked the place. It opened at 5 PM and we walked in at 5:02 PM and there was already 10 people there - I never figured that one out... We started out with a curry soup which was fantastic and then got the rutabaga appetizer which was also great. For an entrée, we split the lamb. The lamb was not what you would expect but we liked it anyway. If you asked me what type of cuisine they sell here, I could not tell you, I never could pin it down to a certain country or mix of cuisine's. But, everything feels a little experimental - like you were getting something you didn't expect and probably have never had before. Yelp says this place has three dollar signs for pricing, but it really should be two. Compared to Chicago places, it really should only have two dollar signs, not three in the main seating area, they had two gigantic tables that probably sat 14 to 16 people each. Weird. I don't know why it would not be full of 2 and 4 person tables? Seems like the owners are limiting the place to me ? Anyway - Braise is a great place to go to try new food ! read more

Day of reservations. Yummy drinks and delicious plates. We were first seated at the bar that is perfect for you indoor cats and for the winter months. We chose to sit outside and loved the patio. We had a few different servers throughout the night which made it a fun experience to be honest. The food was hands down delicious. The wild mushroom crostone is a must for all you mushroom lovers. We split the bread basket and the whipped butter was amazing. Also tried the coffee roasted beets and loved them but I'm a huge fan of beets. Had the risotto for dinner and it was seasoned extremely well and the mushrooms were delicious! They have big tables in the back and that was great for our large group. During the COVID-19 quarantine, we used their site's shop feature to get some needed groceries - it was awesome! We got eggs, jam, ciabatta, butter and cheese...all from Wisconsin vendors! We will definitely keep purchasing from Braise. Braise is a cool little spot in Walker's Point area. The atmosphere is so warm and cozy, it is an awesome spot in the dead of winter. The pork buns and all other dim sum items are super good -- highly recommend. The carrot chickpea fries were also good, though too much fried food isn't my favorite. I have been here for a work event upstairs before, and that was also such a great time. They do a good job of keeping the ambiance nice and pleasant.
