Last night when we were out riding our bikes I saw the Street Steam Bunz food truck parked near the beer aisle in Oakley. Whenever we see the truck we always stop and get a little snack! We were able to order and get our food pretty quickly which is always nice. I always get the bulgogi bun because their meat is soft & flavorful (wish I could make this at home). My husband messed up and got himself a katsu bun. Not because it wasn't amazing, he enjoyed the crispy chicken and tasty flavors, but because he was jealous of my bulgogi bun! I mean who wouldn't be; once you've tried bulgogi, it's hard to have anything else. We had a heard a lot of this food truck that mainly serves Concord CA. We found that they were to be near Four Legs Brewing in Brentwood CA and we made a bee-line for this place... The items they served reminded us of the fare we took for granted in Sunnyvale /Cupertino CA, Chairman Bao food truck outside Cupertino Whole Foods and Secret GardenKorean kitchen (now gone) in Sunnyvale . We love finding this truck when we either go to a brewery and they're there or just happens to be parked around town! We honestly just happened to be driving down Clayton Rd one day and noticed this food truck in front of Staples. My husband LOVES steamed buns and we were looking for a bite to eat, so the truck caught his eye. We ordered 2 bulgogi beef bao ($8 each) and 2 chicken katsu bao ($7). Okay.. These buns are super yummy! My biggest regret is that we didn't get more. The bao bun itself is SO soft and pillowy. You can taste that the meats are marinated and the accompaniments of pickled cucumber and ginger create a nice balance of flavor. I enjoyed both but the chicken katsu one felt a little heartier. The bulgogi beef was flavorful- I just wish there was more of it. The beef was more in bits. I'm glad we were able to try this food truck. Oh my goooodness. What else can I say but that you will INHALE these bao buns like they are straight air that keeps you alive. While I have followed street steam bunz on their Instagram for probably a year, tonight was my first opportunity to FINALLY try them...ooooh boy am I not disappointed. Honestly I'm probably hooked. I finally ran into street steam bunz at epidemics ales brewery in concord but if you follow their IG you will see that the frequent Bills ACE hardware in martinez and lately the staples in concord on Clayton rd. Finally got to get my taste of these buns at their Saturday post in downtown Lafayette in Saturdays. No line and pretty quick turnaround. I ordered the trifecta of buns which are Katsu chicken, pork belly and beef. Each is $7 and a decent size to share. My favorite was the chicken. My mom has been trying to go back but the food truck would either be in Benicia or Brentwood and both locations are a mission. My mom finally saw on their Facebook that they would be in Martinez and she was overjoyed lol she dragged my dad along to go during the weekend and then she saw that they were in Martinez today and called me up and asked if I wanted anything. Since I did not want anything fried, that really limited my choices that evening. So we decided to get a small snack from the Street Steam Bunz truck, a short rib bun for me and chicken katsu bun for hubs. Although the filling was tasty at least for the short rib I tried, the bun itself did not have much integrity to it, breaking apart way too easily. Chairman Bao it is not. So we did as we were told, and ooooooh was it worth it! We got there a little after they opened so there was almost no line, which was great because it got busy real quick as we waited for our food. I really love this food truck. Anytime I see that it's in Martinez or near by I try and swing by to place an order. The bulgogi bao is my absolute favorite with the crunch from the cucumber and the tang from the ginger. I LOVE ginger so I wish there was a bit more but other than that, I love this food truck.
