Really happy to have this ramen option in the area instead of having to drive to the Northwest suburbs. Those ramen shops will still be a destination meal for us, but sometimes you just want ramen now. The tonkotsu ramen noodles were chewy and the broth was familiar and comforting. It was enough for my husband and I to share. The pork loin (kuro buta) was tender and a nice amount. The kids loved the karaage chicken and edamame but not the kids' ramen (good portions, just not to their tastes). I have been to the Chinatown location years ago for Hell Ramen level one. This seemed spicier but maybe I'm just getting older and less tolerant. The waitress was hard to understand and had to have another girl take over. They are very nice but I didn't feel like I was able to have my questions answered fully. For instance, knowing we were new they should have offered some of the extras options. A nice egg or fried garlic would have been nice. That being said, the Hell Ramen was flavorful, hot and spicy...yum! The karaage chicken was good but we asked if they had a chicken karaage bowl and they do not so hubby had to order the karaage and a side of white rice. It's expensive to order that way. This is my new favorite ramen place in the area! If you check in with Yelp, you will get a free edamame which is really awesome because the edamame is delicious- they use some sort of spicy seasoning which is really tasty. The ramen is so yummy and flavorful and you can add chili oil or their special hell seasoning to it to give it a bit of spice. The ambiance is really nice, very warm but modern vibes. The only reason this is not 5 stars is because you order and pay on your phone at the table, so the only time interacting with service is when they bring the food to the table. read more

Monster Hell Ramen Challenge This is a pretty cool place that has a mix of traditional and modern/new age. When you walk in you see a lot of the traditional elements: paper lanterns on the ceiling and high top tables for sitting and slurping up the ramen. Then you see this wall with pictures and a statement saying Monster Hell Ramen Challenge. I've never seen that before at a ramen restaurant. We sat down and the table next to us were 2 guys on a live video podcast doing the Monster Hell Ramen Challenge. I really had no idea what was going on until I read the menu and saw the challenge. If you've ever seen food challenges before you know there's large amounts of food and sometimes very spicy food to see if you can handle it. They menu allows you to pick your meal and add spicy chilies with heat levels from 1 to 5. Most meals only allow you to go to level 4, but the Monster Hell Ramen Challenge allows you to go to level 5. These guys offered a bowl of this to me but I wasn't up for the challenge, so I got level 3 in my ramen. There's different types of spicy. There's hot spicy that sort of burns your lips and mouth and leaves a tingling sensation. Then there is chili spicy that hits the back of your throat, but doesn't really burn your lips and mouth. This is the chili spicy and level 3 hit the back of my throat and I immediately started coughing. I can't imagine what level 5 would do. Overall this is a cool place and the food is pretty good. Definitely worth trying and do the challenge if you're up to it. read more

The freezing temps last night called for some hot and spicy ramen. And so we headed to Strings Ramen in Aurora given the limited number of ramen places we have in the area. There was no wait when we went it and we were seated quite promptly. The inside is colorful, modern and has plenty of seating. We started with some edamame which came with some seasoning which we loved. We also got a Chinese beer which was very good, we never had Chinese draft before. I got the Hell Ramen level - 2. The broth was hot and sooo flavorful. I have a high spice tolerance so level 2 felt normal for me, but if you have low spice tolerance you might have to start at level 1. I want to try level 3 next time. My husband got the curry ramen which is a new addition to the menu. It was mild and quite flavorful too. The noodles were plump and perfectly chewy and the delicious broth satisfied all our cravings. Loved the toppings and meat in both the ramens. Will definitely be back to try other ramens. read more

I finally got to try the new Ramen place in Naperville. I will say I really like this one, I been having a hard time find a place near by but I think my search has come to an end. The broth is phenomenal, so full of flavor and dense. I added their signature "hell" spice to mine and it was just the perfect amount of spice and unique flavor. The interesting part about this place is you have to order and pay at your table through the QR code so it's pretty much no customer service. That's the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars. With Yelp if you check in you will receive a free edamame, but please note you have to walk over to the server to tell them. If not they will not accept your coupon and charge you for the free item. We moved from SF which means we're pretty used to great ramen spots. We're so glad we found out about this ramen spot in the area. I heard many good things about their Chicago loc but we're not really interested in going to Chicago anymore so we were excited to learn that they have a spot here in the suburbs close to our place. THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT. Firstly, the place is SO CLEAN. We see them always on the go and cleaning every little thing/corner. Second, RAMEN IS SPOT ON. The problem was I do not recommend this place for ramen, I ordered the tonkotsu pork belly ramen and I had high hopes. The broth wasn't as flavorful as I thought it would be, the piece of meat was good and filling but I noticed they really fill the plate with vegetables and etc. I finished my plate but I left disappointed the noodles also were a weird texture maybe not cooked long enough for me but I didn't leave the restaurant blissfully full. I wouldn't come back simply because the ramen was not my cup of tea, I also noticed there was no soy sauce and that the egg tasted spoiled, almost like it's been sitting for a while. I've been to the Strings in Chinatown countless times for some late night eats after barhopping, usually within an hour of closing. With those days behind me, I was excited to hear that they were opening a new location in the burbs. While an early Sunday dinner with the wife is a much different circumstance than filling my drunken crave, the ramen here was equally as satisfying. This location was almost self-service. You scan a QR code and order and pay through the Toast webpage. The food came out quick, and it was a super efficient process for impatient people like me. My go to order is always the Kuro Buta pork belly Tonkotsu. Broth This is usually the star of the show for me. The broth had that depth and fattiness that I really enjoy. It was very rich, salty, and meaty and I slurped it all up. It's up there with High Five and Wasabi as some of my favorite broths I've tasted. While the bowls look pretty big, it's actually a little misleading since it narrows significantly closer to the bottom. Noodles The noodles were on the thinner side and had the firmer, al dente texture that I prefer. The portion enough to fill me up without needing to order some kae dama, and wasn't too much to throw off the balance with the broth. Toppings The Kuro Buta comes with a slice of Berkshire pork. The pork in a tonkotsu is usually hit or miss for me, but I loved the pork in this bowl. It was super tender and had a good amount of fat attached to it. The edges felt slightly caramelized to give a nice crisp. While it only comes with half an egg, at least that half was damn good. The yolk wasn't completely runny, but still had that molten gel consistency. Overall, Strings ramen just consistently hits the spot. Their tonkotsu is up there in terms of my favorite ramen places in Chicagoland. It's quick and never disappoints. read more

I consider myself a regular at this point even though I don't live close by. The atmosphere is trendy and they always have good relaxing music playing. Their ramen is very good, but there's some things I've learned from going to other ramen shops. I prefer a marinated egg in my ramen instead of a plain lava egg which they usually give you unless you request a marinated egg. I also am not a fan of the Woodear mushrooms there. They are very chewy like rubber. I am usually a fan of mushrooms, but these just aren't my thing, so I always request "no mushrooms". The meat in the soups is usually cooked fine, but it lacks flavor and I feel it's bland unless you add some of the table sauce and spices to it. Even then, it's not my favorite ramen meat. The service is always quick and friendly. I wouldn't be a regular if I didn't really enjoy coming here. So I recommend Strings. read more
