I have been aware of this ramen chain for years but have never had the pleasure of dining at one. The experience definitely beats a repeat visit soon. I ordered the Level 4 (out of 5) Hell Ramen for $18. I would have ordered the Level 5 ramen, but it was $32 (more on that below)m The Level 4 was quite spicy which was to be expected. They also have $5 draft Sapporos. The Level 5 Hell Ramen costs almost twice as much because it is part of their Hell Ramen Challenge. If you finish it in under 30 minutes, your bowl is free, you get your picture on the wall (they'll post your picture even if you don't finish it, but they'll mark you as an 'L'), and you get $50 in CASH (no lame gift certificate here). It's a little small on the inside, but the seating is cozy. This is an odd observation, but their water tastes really good, like it's purified water rather than the usual tap water. They have bottled soda for other beverages. I got the Tonkatsu w/ pork belly and I really enjoyed it and the portion was decent. The service was extremely quick too and the staff is friendly. The pricing is a bit more expensive for the ramen in Chauncey, but the experience and the food is good so it makes up for it! I would return in the future. read more

I come to Lafayette 2x month for work and have enjoyed exploring the food scene. It's a surprisingly diverse city with the Purdue student influence. This place was solid on its food and atmosphere, felt like sitting in Izakaya. I had the Tonkotsu Ramen that had a deep, rich pork broth and the biggest slice of pork belly I have seen. I also enjoyed the Chicken Karaage, hot chili oil was on the table so I was able to spice it up. This place has nice portions and good value vs the Indy ramen joints, I'll be back. read more

The broth for the shoyu ramen tasted a bit sweet and the ginger did not compliment the broth at all. There was a small amount of noodles and the bean sprouts filled the noodle from top to bottom. The meat was great however being soft to the touch and falling apart as soon as you touched it redeeming the entire ramen. The spicy edamame was ok and more sweet then spicy. The takoyaki deflated and didnt hold its shape after a while. The ambiance of this resturant was nice retaining a wood old style with a mix of future style. Gyoza was ok. Ramen was horrendous. I'm from Southern California so I am used to high quality, good tasting ramen. The tonkotsu broth tastes nothing like salty seafood broth, and the shoyu tastes sweet for some reason. I'm convinced it's the fact I'm in Indiana and everyone here just doesn't know what good ramen tastes like. If you have ever tried half decent ramen, you will be disappointed here. read more

They have vegan broth options and the best part is that they can customize your order. We always like to add shrimp in our vegan ramen and they usually agree to it. Stopped by for Ramen while at Purdue. Lucky we were early before the rush around 6:00 pm. This strings is more crowded than the original Chicago Chinatown location. Ordered premium Tonkotsu ramen. This was well worth the added costs. The bowl was bigger than the normal bowl and clams, pork loin, wagyu beef, pork belly were added. However at 6:00 Sunday they were out of pork belly and a few other menu choices. Deep fried Gyoza crisp and served with a sweet pepper sauce. Togarashi spice mix and a hot pepper paste were on the table. The waitress was helpful explaining the menu , pleasant and efficient. Only slip up was no spoons. read more

I have never had authentic ramen before and this was my introduction. I am not sure what I expected but the taste of the broth and the overall flavor within the ramen was not my favorite. I got the hell ramen level 1. I am usually pretty open to trying new food but the mushrooms and clams in my ramen kinda ruined it for me. It tasted a little too seafoody than I was expecting. 5:30-ish dinner after moving out my Purdue freshman. Restaurant was not crowded when we arrive but more people came to dine-in as well as pickup to-go while we ate. Their actual menu is not what is on their website; lots of items were covered up (unavailable), but Takoyaki (octopus balls) were on their menu but not online. I had seen another yelper say they ordered it so we were hoping it was still available, as it's one of my student's fave foods. We ordered a Tonkatsu Spicy clam & ground pork ramen and a Shoyu Kuro Buta (pig loin) ramen. Both were very flavorful -- my Tonkatsu was more so (more spicy perhaps) that the Tonkatsu at the UIUC ramen restaurant we usually stop at on our trips to Purdue! We also liked how the Takoyaki was 8 small balls instead of fewer big balls -- easier to eat and enjoy the filling, not too much breading. We were both full from our meals. The first time I came to strings 2 years ago it was life changing. The ramen was so flavorful and I loved the vegetarians gyoza. But when I came here today, the ramen just did not taste the same. Finally made it here after the recommendation of a Chicago native. The menu is thankfully simple and as soon as you decide if you're going spicy or not, the easier it is to choose your meal. Even the gyoza had a little kick of spice, but they were delicious! I opted for the Kuro Buta Tonkotsu ramen which was great. It felt lighter than other restaurants' versions. It was disappointing that they didn't have four of the different beverage options, so I was left with water, canned/bottled soda or beer. Located in Chauncey Square, this restaurant feels trendy and has a steady flow of people eating here. The ramen came with a large slice of pork belly and half an egg. Noodles were cooked well and broth was flavorful. The bowls seemed on the smaller end so we had to share a rice bowl in addition to our orders of ramen. I'm obsessed with the beef don. All of its ingredients are so tasty ! The egg, pickled, ginger, and grilled onions really top it off. The gyoza exceeded my expectations. Ramen was pretty good. I would say it's around the same quality as yatagarasu but a little worse. They had more variety and did a better job explaining what the different broths taste like. The noodles are a bit too springy for me. The pork belly tasted amazing. Very rich and flavorful. The gyozas were pretty good, but not the best bang for your buck. The restaurant has really cool decorations and a good vibe. The menus are on QR codes, which is just kind of annoying. There seemed to be one single person serving all the tables in the restaurant (~6 tables) so service was a little on the slower side but still good. I honestly was not a fan of this place for a long time because I didn't really like the popular hell ramens here. I find the environment so pretty so I've tried quite a few dishes. Vet delicious lunch spot just opened in West Lafayette. Ramen was super flavorful and pork belly was scrumptious just the right amount of broth to ramen and very well flavored. Nice chili paste to add a kick self serve on the table to flavor as you like. J had the edamame and dumplings and said the filling was really well balanced and had a nice peppery kick to it. Steamed edamame was fine. They were out of most beverages besides pop but I didn't go to have beverages. Perhaps on the menu, the handheld device they shove in your face for you to pay at the table, the staff simply vocalizing it at literally any interaction (as few and far between as they those interactions may be). Perhaps if they spent less time rolling their eyes, sitting at the counter, and ignoring customers they would have deserved being tipped on top of gratuity outright, without having to sneak it in. I hope the runner gets a cut at least, as they seemed to be the only person working hard in the entire FOH. If you love abominable service, filthy bathrooms, and Taylor Swift on repeat, this is the restaurant experience for you. The food is pretty phenomenal, but we'll be doing takeout from now on.
