She had many excellent massage therapists, but the first time I went to Roger, he was my choice. A few years later, he set up his own practice, no longer covered by insurance (but hang around, he'll be a licensed physical therapist one of these days). I saw him less often for money reasons and yearned from afar. A couple of years ago, I gave my sister a gift certificate for a massage with Roger. She's been hooked ever since. Recently, I realized that with my functional and pain issues, I had to budget the money for at least monthly visits. Roger learns your body quickly and never forgets, even after years. My problems have been all over the map--from carpal tunnel to degenerative disc disease. I've been a athlete and I've been disabled. He can target whatever the issue is now, working carefully around areas that are vulnerable and healing those areas by working on adjoining or complementary muscles and tendons. For example, when my spine was disintegrating (pre-spinal fusion), he knew how to relieve the muscle pain without aggravating the nerve damage. He's worked on my hips when they were going out, and he's worked on restoring flexibility after replacement. After a session with Roger, I feel like I've shed the last 10 years of injuries, arthritis and tendinitis. There are lots of good massage therapists in the Bay Area, but probably only one Roger in a lifetime. His rates (noted here are "$$$") are really on the low side for massage therapy, and he gives you the option of an hour or an hour and half. You can also buy a series of massages at a discount. He's a genuinely good person, and he makes you feel like you're the only person in the world while he works on you (though he will ask "how's your sister?"). One final thing--online booking is the bomb, and with Roger's appointments being snapped up before your very eyes, you might want to take advantage of this. But if you'e confused with it, call him anyway.

I get it- but a great masseur is hard to come by and I can sincerely say Roger is one of the best I've encountered. Roger is awesome! I am an avid runner, workaholic and a serious massage enthusiast aka I have tight shoulders, calves, hip flexors and recurring plantar that drives me nuts. I also consider myself a cheapy massage junkie but am willing to shell out top dollar for someone w the skill set and knowledge like Roger. It's a good thing his prices are totally within reason. Nutshell- -Extremely knowledgeable and is happy to share tips on how to keep your body in line and in check through small changes in your daily routine. -Uses combination of dynamic stretching/movement and pressure to workout the knots/kinks in your body from over exertion or bad form. - Respects your willingness to be chatty or understands when quiet time is necessary. - Always checks in to make sure you are satisfied w pressure and focus area's. -He's a genuinely nice/caring person with a warm smile. The room we were in was beautifully decorated with eastern-style art, which created a peaceful atmosphere. Negative: I had clearly communicated before and during the massage that I prefer medium to strong pressure. Tod was reticent to apply any more pressure than light touching. This caused some frustration on my end, because the light touching amounted to what felt like the promise of massage without actual massage. The massage of chest, shoulders, and back was inadequate because of the lack of pressure. He did not attempt to massage either my hands or feet, which were missed opportunities in the full hour. I asked Tod during the session what kind of massage he prefers. He mentioned that he had gone to Thai massage salons in the area but found them to be too harsh and not attentive to his individual physical issues. This was a telling response: Tod's default approach is to be very gentle with others. However, that wasn't my starting point and Tod didn't seem able or willing to adapt to my preference for a firmer massage. Previously I have enjoyed dozens of massages in the style of Swedish, Thai, and Deep Tissue. If Tod has experience with and is capable of using these techniques, he did not demonstrate this in my massage experience. Because Tod is such a kind guy, it pains me to leave a less than stellar review. Pressure relieves pain, and because there was no pressure, it was not therapeutic for me. I booked another masseuse immediately afterward.

Seriously…read more Compared to getting a nice massage and the therapist doing their routine, I could tell that Toni pays attention to your particular situation- he focuses where he notices your problem areas are. I didn't even know my hips were tight until he pointed it out and spent a little extra time working on them. I didn't know that stretching my legs could help my lower back pain. He actually asked me about my routines and just seemed so intuitive. Some people just have that quality about them like he does. I don't think you can teach that. I noticed he is also a certified yoga instructor and he's an athlete, so clearly he's into wellness. There is no autopilot with him. No "fluff and buff." Many therapists can give you a relaxing massage, but Toni ensures your body is better than what you came in with, lol. He also has really nice ad-ons. I highly recommend cupping.
