I know the restaurant permeantly closed before 2025 can even end, but I don't care, I just want to give this restaurant at least a review. I've gotta say, I was never disappointed by Stroud's at all as it was easily the best restaurant I've been to in such a long time, as I've had so many fond memories going there such as going out to look at the pond, looking at the cat house and inside the restaurant never disappoints, their service is always good as they were always happy to see me willing to take my order of a chicken fried steak and the waiters and waitresses were so friendly. My favourite parts of Stroud's are their onion rings and chicken fried steak as their breading is made with actual flour. Their service never disappoints either as they always love seeing me come in and have their food. Plus it was one of the restaurants I always go back to time and time again, I kid you not and will always remain in my heart since I've grew older. We like eating here every so often--usually on Tuesday evenings or Sundays for lunch. We often have Roz as our server and she is always on her game. We like the chicken tenders, soup and the fried mushrooms. The dipping sauces are all really good. The cinnamon rolls are kind of an acquired taste as they aren't like a typical cinnamon roll. **UPDATE 03/03/25** My husband and I both got sick after eating here. 03/01/24 - This used to be my FAVORITE place to eat. However today's experience made it one of my least favorite. Took an hour and a half to get food. That's from parking to waiting for a table (told 15 minutes) to waiting for food. They apparently don't have a busser and make the host do it, which leaves a line of people waiting to get put on the waitlist. They do have a bar you can order at....if you can find the bartender. 20+ minutes and finally found a rather rude bartender willing to make us a drink while we waited. The food has gone downhill. I know it's been a while since I've been here but the Gravy used to be the best part of the meal, now its the worst. The saving grace was our actual waitress. She was friendly and pleasant and quick when she was able to be. The cinnamon rolls still are delicious and one out of 3 chicken breast's was great. read more

We got there right at opening and were sat immediately. I don't know if they're understaffed or what but service was SO S L O W! It took forever to get drinks and order an appetizer. And the appetizer was just dumped on the table without any plates and there was so way to share. Our server finally came back and we were able to ask for some. Again our server disappeared and it was forever before we could order our food. I understand it takes a while for food to arrive but salads took a while after ordering. The food is fine. It's obviously made in house and fresh, but it lacks seasoning and flavor. The chicken fried steak was soggy and the crust needed better flavor. The steak was fine. For what you get and the service this place is WAY over priced. We also didn't receive any dinner rolls which they list in the menu. Our server didn't return until we finished our meals so we didn't ask about them. There are rips in the carpet and generally the place looks old and unkempt. In the past, Stroud's has been a favorite. Unfortunately, our last visit was extremely disappointing. To start on a positive note, our server was friendly and attentive. No issues with her at all. The food was, unfortunately, a letdown. My wife and I split their chicken fried breast dinner. The chicken portion was much smaller than in the past, and it was kind of bland. It's a rustic little restaurant on Wichita out in nomads land. The inside reminded me of a country barn. I wasn't sure of what I expected so I went in with an open mind. The staff was very nice and to be honest I was excited to see many poc working there. I got excited for the food@@ my counterpart ordered the fried pork chop with mash potatoes and gravy along with a side salad. i ordered the fried chicken with baked potato. We received green beans with our order also. Mmmm... absolutely no seasoning. And the pork chopped was not tender. Overcooked/ fried. My chicken didn't have any seasoni at all. Growing up in Kansas City, Stroud's was an all time favorite. While this isn't the Oak Ridge Manor location, it is a taste of home. I have been coming here for years for family dinners and special occasions alike. The restaurant is in a converted horse barn with rooms divided by barn stalls. The fried chick is obviously what they are known for and is still made in small batches in cast iron skillets. This is the best fried chicken i have ever had anywhere as well as the fried chicken livers and gravy. All dishes are served family style, you pick out the chicken you want and green beans, dinner rolls, mashed potatoes and true "homemade" gravy is all served family style. Not many restaurants are still centered around families anymore, but this is sure one not to be missed. Don't miss the cinnamon and sugar crusted dessert rolls at the end if you can still find room. Definitely plan ahead as there is always a wait list when open. read more

I have visited Strouds a few times while on travel and they never disappoints. Their chicken and pork chop are pan fried and are extremely juicy and packed with flavor. Their meals provided their homemade chicken noodle soup which is amazing. Once their chicken and pork chop the smell of flavors start to set off flavor alarms. Their green beans are not canned and gravy is homemade and go perfectly with the mashed potatoes and proteins. Lastly, they give you a cinnamon roll as a desert and apple sauce to top off the pork chop. There is nothing fancy once you reach strouds but their food is incredible, taste home cooked and the service is top notch. Excellent! If you don't want the mess of frying chicken and want it like grandma made, then this is the place to go. The mashed potatoes/gravy was homemade. Green beans were delicious, cooked with onion and bacon. Cinnamon Rolls don't look like your typical cinnamon roll but don't that deceive you, these cinnamon rolls are delicious and just the right size. Served warm make them hard to resist. We have been coming here for a few years. We have had some great experiences and a few mediocre experiences. I love the atmosphere , makes me feel like I am in a horse stable (minus the hay and apples). I was brought up eating chicken livers. And am so glad you can get whole or 1/2 order of them. I've been getting Wichita's best fried chicken here for a long time. BUT.... it has slowly gone downhill. I usually get it to go, so we can enjoy it at home. They pack it well so it's still hot when you get home. That's probably the best thing they have done. I get the 3 breast meal, and my wife loves the liver and gizzard. She had very few, and very small gizzards, and some overcooked. My chicken breast was cooked ok, maybe a touch over cooked, but I'll take that over undercooked. You would think they would have this process down by now. Also, one of the best things about fried chicken is the skin. It was so over seasoned that it was inedible. The meat was fine, but the skin was like a piece of pure salt. Customer service could use a little cleaning up, mostly their nasty mouths. I'm by no means a prude, but to hear F this and F that, and F that B, while waiting for my food.... (which, by the way, is always at least 15 past when they say it will be ready) VERY UNPROFESSIONAL Language, and this was not the first time. That being said, we will probably not go back. read more

Manager was rude food was over cooked, burnt then when we asked for something different the manager got an attitude charge us for two meals we ended paying over 200.00 when only the sides were edible. If you eat there sick with the dry chicken it's the only thing that is good enough to eat. If you complain you will get horrible service from the manager. Given one person in the party pulled her fish completely apart trying to find the fish so her plate was a pile of crumbs but she not actually eat any part of the fish. My aunt pulled back the crust and ate the center of the fish the complained. I broke off the tip took one bite could tell it was burnt did not eat anything else and was only going to fill up on the sides since the green beans were delicious. So when she offered up chicken at first I didn't indulge because of her attitude but then I said as you can see I did not eat my fish my I have some chicken as well and she said ok who all wants chicken and three more people said I do which out of a party of seven five people switched to chicken we were expecting to for one or the other she charged us for both. We paid 24 each for three wings not even the wing that has part of the breast attached just three small regular wings, that you would cook at home. Then my mother got sick at the restaurant and my niece has been sick all night and this morning with diarrhea. Because they ate the whole catfish and did not change their order. The only two people who didn't change to the chicken got sick. Strouds should be ashamed. Plus before we could make it out of the restaurant the manager is playing with a baby behind the bar while tending the bar. Is this not illegal. Sunday 2:00 party of two. Not busy,so great.The greet staff was somewhat unmotivated and seemed confused about deciding who was to seat us. Our waitress as very attentive and accommodating. We ordered the 3 breast chicken dinner for sharing. Had green beans and the mashed potatoes and gravy. The meal was very good. Potatoes were somewhat runny but the gravy made up for that . We had a reservation at Stroud's today for 23 people at 3:00 after a graduation. The restaurant was not busy at all, we were told the server was not there yet and they wouldn't seat us. 4 staff members, which looked like 3 servers sat at the bar. We waited till 3:30 then when we started to leave they told us she was done with her break. We left.....so disappointed! I stopped by strouds Sunday morning to bring home lunch for my parents just for a little treat! The food was ready very quickly and I get the service was very helpful on figuring out what to bring home for carry out. I purchased the meal for four which comes with tons of chicken, mashed potato's/gravy, green beans, salad and then the cinnamon rolls (see picture). I ended up paying a little above 50 dollars after tax (I feel that is a reasonable price). As always from strauds, it was way too much food for four which is a good problem to have! My family was extremely appreciate for bringing it home and wouldn't stop saying how good it was! They especially loved the gravy. Everything was just very good! read more

We went to Strouds on a Saturday night at 7pm. I called and they said 2 people would be no problem. We found out why. There was NOBODY there eating. The fried gizzards were chewy and lacked breading. The fried chicken was dry and flavorless. The sides were ok at best, and the cinnamon rolls were whole wheat dinner rolls with cinnamon butter. Two meals were $45 and we could have eaten at a fast food chicken place for half the cost and twice as flavorful food. It is safe to say Strouds is not what it used to be. read more

I have been to this restaurant numerous times during visits to Wichita. I have had good experiences but today was not a good one. Arrived at the restaurant and waited at least 10 minutes at the hostess station and was never acknowledged or greeted by any of the staff. Waitresses we're walking back and forth, one even crossed in front of me while I waited. A lady came in behind me and asked how long I had been waiting....I told her and she said the same thing happened to her the list time she was in. I turned and left. If there is no official hostess the wait staff should at least greet guests. I understand short staffing, but Just leaving people to stand there waiting with no communication is just very poor service. read more

Ate here again so my cousin could have their chicken gizzards..Server was overwhelmed wit a large group and should have had help. Chicken fried steak was fair but nothing to rave about. Wife's catfish filet was not good, too much breading, too crusty and burnt. Her large baked potato was served almost standing up in a a soup bowl and difficult to do a thing with but it was too dry with minimal butter and sour cream to try to help.. green beans were the best part of the meal. "Cinnamon rolls" were edible but just brown bread rolls with cinnamon and sugar over the tops. Unfortunately this was similar to our experience a year ago when this cousin needed a gizzard fix. Ok, my 2nd and LAST time to walk into this nasty place! 1st time the catfish was raw and filthy tasting, service slow, just yuk! Today we had reservations for 3:00, they called us in and so we Waited, and waited, and waited. Asked what the deal was and they said "Oh 3:00, well we are running TWO HOURS BEHIND, I asked why the called us in and got the turning dog head look and a smart-mouthed remark...Wrong! Just as I started to explain manners to the snippy little girl, the customers ALL started complaining. Came here against our better judgement based on old reviews, should have listened to newer ones. Walking in I was charmed by the gazebos and quaint happy style. Truly looking forward to a delicious meal. We started off with the best chicken soup that could cure any illness. Seriously, it might just cure the common cold. It was so good and had we left at that moment, the review would be five stars. Shortly after finishing our soup, our meal arrived. I cannot imagine it was pan fried fresh, as it arrived so quickly, but it had quite a lot of heat coming off of it. The chicken looked marvelous. It had a beautiful crisp on the skin that screams pan fried southern goodness. We piled our plates with the made-from-scratch mashed potatoes, and the just opened can of green beans (microwaved to perfection, I'm sure). I stripped off a bit of the fried goodness and was met with the least flavorful chicken skin I've ever eaten. I thought to myself, surely this is a mistake and took another bite. The crisp was good. The flavor was non-existent. Maybe they soaked the chicken? Chicken meat was flavorless. We bowed out heads solemnly in sadness for the poor chicken that lost her life in vain. Gravy...good consistency....flavorless. Mashed potatoes....looked dreamy....flavorless. Green beans....ironically the most flavorful (aside from the to-die-for soup) part of our meal. We took the cinnamon rolls to go with us home. I was teetering between a 2 and 3 star rating, the cinnamon rolls sealed the deal. They are doughy, slimy, canned (probably) biscuits covered in cinnamon and sugar. Ceilings are low, and so you are in for a noisy dinner, even with only three other tables on a Sunday night. The service was quick and friendly, though she never shared her name, she did fine. Cost was crazy for what you got. Two breasts, two wings, two soups, green beans and mashed, and one beer was $40. Which I would gladly pay if the food was good. Overall, the food lacked flavor, so much so that I think there must be a special spice added to make doubly sure everything is as flavorless as possible. The bottom line is this place has SO MUCH POTENTIAL!! So much. I am truly saddened by the lack of imagination in this kitchen. Garlic, fresh green beans (for the cost you could surely blanch a few each order), salt and pepper in the flour, take a chance on some flavor. It COULD be good, but it just so wasn't. read more
