She had normal crowding: my wisdom teeth were impacted and coming in at 90 degrees, as well as suffering from bacteria pockets he showed me on the Xray caused by the impacting, which also caused a cavity in one of my four wisdom teeth. Knowing this, you would think I would have been prescribed antibiotics. On the second day of being in excruciating pain, he prescribed me more Hydros. On the third day, after informing the surgeon I was throwing up, I was told that the risk of infection is rare and I probably have the flu. Although he said I can send pictures, and did try to schedule an appointment, I ended up going to the ER and informed I had a severe infection and put on antibiotics. To make It even worse, when I went to him for my follow up appointment, the surgeon tried to tell me that the infection was from food getting stuck in the holes even when I explained that I had kept up with my oral care and did not eat any solid food before I went to the ER. Do not come here.

Going to a new dentist for pain is always a risk - if they claim dozens of cavities (and maybe a couple of root canals!), plumping up their bill into the thousands, how would I ever know the difference? That did not happen at all. Dr. Painter made no attempts to sell me anything extra, located the cavities and did the drilling necessary to fix them. I could tell at least one tooth was pretty bad - I had been having constant pain for a while, and he agreed that I probably narrowly avoided a root canal. Throughout my appointments Dr. Painter was friendly, cheerful, and personable, which really helped take my mind off my ridiculous fears of dental work. The only bad thing about the office is that Dr. Painter's good reputation seems to have gotten around, and his waiting room was pretty busy. And it doesn't help his waiting time that he is so incredibly careful with his patients - he re-did one tooth from scratch just because he wasn't 100% confident that the filling was perfect. As he said, he wanted it to be perfect. And since I went, it has been! While I can't say I ever *enjoy* my visits to a dentist, it really makes such a difference when the dentist treating you seems so incredibly competent and careful!

Lounge…read morefurniture on the porch, a beverage station and TV in the lobby, TVs on the ceilings in the exam rooms, and super friendly staff make me willing to go every six months on the dot for my regular check-ups. Dr. Trunk is super friendly but also great at what she does. She's also realistic - she encourages strong oral hygiene but doesn't talk to you like a lot of other dentists can (read: condescendingly). She just chats with you. The hygienists are also quick and professional and clearly enjoy what they do. I also had a more major procedure done (root canal and crown due to a mistake from a previous dentist) and that was as pleasant as could be. They are professional and do great work and I have had no issues with the crown since they put it in nearly two years ago.

Also, beware of the topical fluoride for adults....it is a profit center. I have never been asked if I wanted this additional treatment. I researched on line. Make up your own mind. Some research says it is great for adults, other research says it is all about the money. Dental Doctors has changed a lot in the past few years. Maybe it is time to make a switch. They went above and beyond, and they even called after the surgery to make sure I got my medications and to check on how I was doing. The staff was very friendly, the instructions were clear, and the whole process was smooth from start to finish. I didn't have any pain at all afterward. Dr. Milton welcomed me and did the consultation for my biopsy at that time and scheduled my biopsy the following week. He is a very compassionate and caring doctor and was very informative of the procedure and took time to answer my questions. Before the biopsy, he discussed everything he was going to do and kept me advised during the procedure. He called my home the same night after surgery to see how I was doing. He followed up with a post op visit and discussed the results. I highly recommend Dr. Milton.

But probably the deal breaker was that for a routine check up after the dental part of the appt. we would've had to wait SIX MONTHS for a cleaning. We've NEVER run into this kind of arrangement in our collective 140 year experience. One explanation, we thought, was that they couldn't hire or retain enough dental hygienists. And why is that? Are there not enough dental hygienists in St. Augustine, or does the practice not pay them enough or otherwise provide a miserable working experience? Who knows, and really we don't care. We are tired with tolerating drama anywhere for whatever reason, so we're going back to our "old" dentist in Orlando. We got two appts. about 10 days out from contacting them. The appt. includes a cleaning.
