I wish we still had Tipp O' the Town restaurant--but in any case I'm glad New Carlisle still has some options for nice hometown breakfast spots. The service is all great and efficient--that's something I love. I know the servers are going to make sure we have everything we would need and want but also not linger and yap my ear off while I'm just trying to enjoy a relaxed meal with family. My husband and I unfortunately had to go to Ohio for a dear friend's funeral. We lived in Ohio for 10 years and made some lifelong friends there but we had not been back in person for over 20 years. Prior to the funeral we were hungry and decided to go to Studebaker's. It was like stepping back in time. There were several elderly gentleman there having coffee and eating breakfast. By their banter with each other and the friendly waitresses, you could tell they were there every morning to tease each other and the waitresses. The menu and decor were old school. No mimosas or bloody Mary's here. Good strong hot coffee ( my husband said it was the best coffee he's had in years), Pepsi products, chocolate milk, Tea ("Ya want yours sweet, Honey?") and an old timey food menu your Grandma would have been proud to serve you. The menu was extensive but I choose the Swiss Steak hot shot. It was so delicious that I ate every single bite which is unusual for me. My husband got the fried Bologna Sandwich and fries. Fried Bologna sandwiches are a unique Ohio staple but oh, so yummy. Ha! I had to laugh because my husband was here a year ago and submitted a post. We are coming back for breakfast. The food is solid country cooking and the service is given with down home comfort. I heard the bean soup is excellent. Wish it was a daily staple because they serve it on Mondays and maybe on Tuesday if there are leftovers. Today is Wednesday and they are out if it. One of my favorite places to go in New Carlisle. It doesn't have 50 tables, loud music or waitresses stopping to dances. You walk in and it feels like family telling you to find a chair. The staff act like they have worked together for 50 years. I love going places where employees enjoy their job. You can tell they're friends and help one another. Maybe their not friends but the are definitely a carefree choreographed team of professionals. Ordering and check out are seamless. I usually get breakfast and take home chili for dinner. To go option is simple too. I usually call in and pickup. They always package with care so it doesn't fall over in your car. Sounds silly but sometimes it's a whole bunch of little things that make it so popular. read more

Very solid diner with very friendly staff. We have been very satisfied with every dinner here. Now we just need to get up early on the weekends and try their breakfast. The most enjoyable part of our visits has been we they bring the basket of warm fresh home baked bread to the table. Restaurant known for chicken, which is very good, but service is awful. Rude treatment unless you're a regular. Very, very long wait times. If they are out of something that is supposed to go with your meal (bread?), they refuse to offer alternative unless you pay extra, but also don't take it off your bill. My husband really enjoyed his steak sandwich. I enjoyed my country fried steak and eggs. However, after five years of loyal business we were told we were not allowed to water or hand feed my service dog. This was upsetting because the servers had offered to-go cups and had asked the kitchen to cut up sausages for us until then. We always brought our own water bowl and hand fed with no complaints. My coworkers were telling me about the Broaster Chicken. So I am here to give it a shot! I have never had chicken served this way before. The restaurant has an old country family restaurant vibe. The staff is really friendly here. For those that dont know, Broaster Chicken is lightly breaded chicken cooked in a pressure cooker. I had the lunch special which is a,1/2 chicken, this consists of 1 wing, 1 leg and a 1/2 of chicken breast. I also had a side of mashed potatoes and green beans, with a sweet tea. Very tasty! If you find yourself in New Carlisle, Ohio ask where this restaurant is located, then proceed to it and order a meal. I also had a chocolate hand-spun milkshake, it was pretty good too! I first visited Studebaker when I was camping at Enon Beach and the Carriage Inn was closed. It was a GREAT alternative. The service was good and friendly. The food was good and reasonably priced. I had ham and eggs with wheat toast. It had 2 thick slices of ham. My eggs came out over easy just as ordered. The toast was good too. I enjoyed the meal. I'll visit again, when I'm in the area. read more

We took our son and grandchildren out for breakfast this morning to the Studebaker location in New Carlisle. This is a seat yourself restaurant and they were busy. There were no tables available so I asked about the back room that was completely empty. I was told it was a party room and we could not go in there and I need to move because I was blocking the menus. So we waited for a few moments before another another couple walked in... apparently regulars... because at that point the staff had voices... told them "hang on just a minute we'll clear the table for you". Needless to say we left and due to the rudeness of the staff we will never be back. Being busy is not an excuse for rudeness. read more

Doesn't really look like much with a small parking lot and single door but it is very good. Whenever you first walk in you can see how laid back the restraunt is instead of everyone being uptight and angry. When you get your food I would recommend the French toast with syrup because it is amazing. The meal itself is beautiful with a golden bread and powdered sugar. I would normally give them a ten, but today we came in and got it there between 2 and 3 and they close at 3 there Roasted Chicken special with Ben dip so much is very hard to eat and meet the chicken a little tough their mashed potatoes weren't smashed it was still huge chunk Cinema and cold they did conversate with a banana cream pie has more whipped cream than the pie. Came in and left after sitting for 20 minutes without service. The table next to us came in and they started taking their order so we got up and left. No one even recognized that we were there. Very sad. Then we checked out paid for the one cup of coffee one of our guests did get and no one appeared to be connecting to anyone around them. Everyone is in their own head and not paying attention to the guests at all. And it's not like they were full and they had plenty of people standing around at the register. Big servings for a reasonable price and a lot to choose from. The chicken was juicy and crispy, just not seasoned very well. 2 people at my table ordered breakfast and were very pleased with what they received. I've been here a few times now and this place is consistently busy with what seems to be repeat customers. The boneless broasted chicken strips meal was delicious and came with two very generously sized sides. The staff here are always super friendly and welcome us with huge smiles and quick service. The only reason this restaurant didn't get a five star was because of their lack of changing table in the bathrooms. If this is a family friendly restaurant they need to be prepared for kids that need changed! Our server said we were welcome to use one of the empty booths to change our one year old, but I'm not too sure the other clientele would appreciate the fresh smell of poo during a meal. read more

Go at 1:30 on a Sunday and you are surrounded by a community in which every person is on a first name basis. The restaurant is a low key diner with a country theme. The menu is large and features breasted chicken, all day breakfast, and dinner specials. The prices are cheap!!!! $3.29 for a burger!! We highly suggest the chili which is just like your mom makes! This review is for the new studebakers in Springgfield, located where colliers was at and not for the others. With a waiting times of 20 minutes and up to be seated, when not that busy is ridiculous (the hostesses don't clean tables they only sit people - and will wait to sit someone even if other tables available). They are short staffed, as other restaurants are, and are slow of serving. Once you get sited you can usually get your drink and know who your waitress is, in about 5 - 10 minutes. Once your order is placed you might have to wait upwards of 30 minutes (usually 50 minutes) because (and this is their reason) a cook did not show up for work (fire the ones that don't want to come in and hire ones that want to work). A normal 45 minute experience is now an hour long adventure (and not a pleasant one). I can not see this place lasting much longer with the loss of customers that I have noticed. The other 2 Restaurants in Urbana and new Carlisle are doing good and I can recommend them but the one in Springgfield is not worth the waste of time read more

Whenever we are in the area, we eat at least one meal at Studebakers. The super chicken salad is very filling and they happily substitute beets for pickled eggs. On Fridays, the fish is crispy and all you can eat. It's not fancy food, it tends toward starchy and fried, but even a vegan can probably cobble together a decent meal, which is rare in these tiny midwestern town restaurants. Prices are really fair. The pies are good. I would recommend this restaurant. Go in the morning so you can enjoy the banter of the old men seated around a large table discussing how to cure all the world's problems.
