I had plans to travel to see at friend at MIT, but had to cancel because they're sending everyone home due to COVID-19. When I tried to cancel my reservation, the hotel only offered me around ~40% of what I paid as a credit for a future stay. I tried to explain that the person I was going to see in Boston wasn't going to be there any more, but they wouldn't budge. I understand that this is a hard time for hotels, but treating customers this was during a national crisis is completely unreasonable, not to mention greedy. read more

This is a really fun hotel! There is unique art in every room and in the lobby and lounge areas, and it has a great bar/restaurant area that includes a large outdoor area with a modern fire pit thing. It has a GREAT ping pong table. The hotel is right across the street from the Charles River, which was a great place to relax at the beginning and end of every day during our stay. The hotel is very close to downtown Boston, but far enough away from the hustle/bustle. And there are a lot of nice restaurants nearby the hotel. (We highly recommend Carlos' Cucina Italiana!). I've stayed here twice and both times the rooms were comfortable and clean. Kudos to the general manager, Arnoldo, and front desk person, Melissa, for going the extra mile to make my brother and I comfortable; Their focus on customer comfort and satisfaction was really impressive. read more

As many reviews have mentioned, there seems to be two vastly different types of rooms at this hotel. We were first checked into room 331 and had one of the most miserable experiences ever. The room is right next to a LOUD generator, in the alleyway where garbage is picked up LOUDLY at 6am, and adjacent to the LOUD elevator. The walls were paper thin and we were constantly being woken up every few minutes by a new noise. One of the worst nights of sleep I have ever had. However, the manager Sean kindly changed our room the next night and provided great customer service. We were switched to room 508 and it was perfect. Beautiful room, great view of the Charles river, and quiet. The rooms and decor of the hotel as a whole are beautiful. The artwork is great. The hotel restaurant is delicious and I would HIGHLY recommend their brunch. I would definitely stay here again, provided that I got one of the "good rooms" facing the Charles river. Whatever you do, make sure your room is not facing the skating rink and generator. read more

The sheets smelled nice and the bed is comfy, however we had a hard time showering without a shower current. When I saw the photos online I thought the bathrooms were going to be spa like. But it feels more like an old folks home with balance bars and a seat in the bath. We are here for three nights, so we are happy the bed is nice. Also we love when places are dog friendly. However, when we got to Studio Allston, we were disappointed with our room. Why? - The air conditioner didn't work, so we had to call the front desk to send up a repair man. - The bathroom has a sliding door. It wasn't working properly and jammed. I got stuck in the bathroom for 10 minutes. - The ice machine on our floor didn't work. - Construction workers for the bistro downstairs began using loud buzz saws at 6:30 a.m. To their credit, when we complained about these things, the manager comped the hotel fees ($11) and our small breakfast in the morning ($14). Breakfast in the bar was good, the small basement gym is useful, and the staff is cheerful and helpful. Martlyn in particular was great and made me glad I'd chosen Studio Allston. I stayed at Studio Allston Hotel for a couple nights in early July 2019. The room art was really cool and I liked that there was an artist bio plaque also located in the room that detailed the artist and their artistic vision. The room was clean, comfortable, and had everything I needed during my stay. I'm a single guy so when I travel, I don't need bells and whistles in the hotel room because I spend most of my time out and about in town. The room I stayed in was perfect for a traveler such as myself. Additionally, the location of Studio Allston is perfect - it is a very short drive from Boston University, seaport, downtown, Newbury Street, etc. Although it is relatively close to these Boston tourist hotspots, it feels like it is in it's own quiet part of town. Studio is by far my favorite hotel stay in the Boston area. I work for Harvard and won't choose any other overnight accommodation. It is low-stress check-in with free parking, fitness room exceeded my expectations, and a full assortment of breakfast and coffee options in the morning! The staff are readily available and really care about your experience. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the hotel is quiet and safe. They have a quite noisy annoying noise in the room that made me headache, I asked to change room, they said all rooms on top floor are having the same noise. Finally assigned us a room on lower level, no view and facing a warehouse. Ok doesn't matter, the noise was there but bearable. Then we settled and about to sleep. The air con right on top of the bed woke us up every 15 to 20 minutes. Never had such loud noise from an air con! I think this hotel really needs a thorough check up!! They overbooked their rooms so when we got there we didn't have our room despite booking it 2 weeks in advance. Additionally, we were told they would switch our room and our luggage through out the day but it never happened. Besides that, the hotel is very nice and modern. My room had a wireless phone charger but I suggest that you don't use it as it didn't charge my phone at night. The toiletries are really efficient, like the shampoo. Also the cleaning lady was the sweetest and she really helped me out when I needed additional supplies. read more

The lobby is nice when you come in. Everything is very modern artsy and hipster-esque which was new and interesting. The staff was nice. We were attending a concert at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway and the hotel is in a good location to get there. We stayed in a room on the 3rd floor with double queen beds. Everything seemed clean and the beds were comfortable enough. We paid a lot of money so we expected something more on the luxury side, but it was very average. The one thing that stood out was the unique art on the walls and the big TV. The bathroom door is like a barn style sliding door and it doesn't actually close, just covers the doorway, so there is a big gap. If you were to have an unpleasant bathroom experience, everyone in the room could hear you. My biggest problem was the AC. When we arrived in the room, it was hot. We turned on the cooling and set the AC to 65. It was late so we went to bed thinking it would cool down. We woke up around 2:30am and the thermostat said it was 83 degrees in the room. We called the lobby and they informed us then that they turned off the AC for the whole building. They brought us a box fan and it was a lot better, but no one told us that the AC would only blast hot air. On booking.com it said AC was one of the amenities, too. I would have stayed somewhere else had I known their AC was turned off indefinitely. Breakfast is included but it's just grab and go stuff. I would've given more stars if it weren't so expensive. For a 130.00$ a night 4 star hotel, with an art gallery theme, you'd think that this hotel would be a good catch. Think again. For starters as soon as I stepped into the suite, it smelled musky and the air was so humid and gross that we had to crack open the windows and turn on the air conditioner to "clean the air out". It smelled as if someone had dirty, wet clothes and left them to go rancid in the room. Secondly, the paintings and art experience was extremely lackluster. There was a lot of potential, and so much could have been done to make this hotel fun with the seemingly unique business plan and concept they had going here. But sadly there were just a few art pieces in the front desk area, a small print of art on the lobby floor, and 2 to 3 paintings per room, nothing special to be honest. It felt as if we were mainly paying for the artistic experience but there's barely anything with a "wow" factor behind it. (No offense to the amazing artists. The art was great, just not the lack of it). I was expecting art in the bathroom, elevator, wall art, individual themes from room to room, nothing extreme! But nice enough to live to the expectation lol . Essentially we just paid for a bed and bathroom. Just a plain and average hotel I felt robbed in a way. There's not even a coffee maker in the suites. It was just boring considering that they make it seem like a pretty edgy and out of the ordinary hotel. The area is also not too great if you have no car. Not a lot around other than an ice skating hall and a McDonald's . Which is okay I guess. Funnily enough I left, and booked a stay at Ramada hotel (A 2 star hotel) that looks like a bad idea from the outside yet it ended up being the best hotel experience ever. With free breakfast, super clean rooms, a bowling alley, and comfortable beds, complimentary snacks and pastries, a summer indoors pool etc. I say this because looks can be deceiving. Costumer service was a 3/5 as the employees don't seem too involved with the guests. It felt slightly isolated/distant. Overall it was an ok hotel if you're looking for something plain and average with a touch of art here and there, but if you're looking for something with perks, and fun things to do, seek elsewhere. Many hotels may be rated very low but could end up being better than these fancy looking ones with nothing to offer other than a bed to sleep on and a shower. This one fooled me for sure! read more

If I ever open a business, I'll definitely hire the same marketing team as this place used. The photography work is magic. It's nothing like the photos! This "boutique" hotel slapped some paint (lots of paint) on what seems like a tired old Best Western or something. One coffee maker in the entire place which was about a mile from our room. No laundry, no amenities (unless you count giant jenga and connect four in the lobby an amenity). The Cuban restaurant is dark and dirty feeling. The hallways and elevators are freezing cold. The thermostat in our room didn't work. The cleaning service did the bare minimum. The front desk is not welcoming or helpful. I'm not sure how they justify the cost. If there is any other hotel in the area with openings, choose that one. read more

Positives: The room was clean. The parking was great and the receptionists (both a young lady and a young man the next day) were PHENOMENAL. The food at the restaurant was great and the service was great, too. Breakfast is served until 3pm and they'll let you check out as late as 1pm for free if you ask. Negatives: Not all rooms are created equal. The room we got looked like a daycare center or something. I could have painted it with a bunch of stencils. It was not impressive like the pictures. We were on the second floor and I'm not sure what it was but the room/floor vibrated basically the whole time. At one point I started to get a headache from the constant shaking. We woke up at 6am from the alarm clock that we never set... and couldn't fall back asleep because the restaurant below us was setting up for opening. You could hear laughing, banging, moving furniture. We booked this room for one single night for a friends birthday. We were going out and wanted to come back to a nice place. We were told the bar/restaurant at the hotel closed at 2am. We invited our friends back to our hotel and when we arrived around 1:20am the restaurant was already locked up and closed. It was disappointing and embarrassing that we invited people back to our hotel when it wasn't even open like it should have been. We purchased the bed and breakfast package. So we get up after our restless night's sleep and sit for breakfast. We then find out that our breakfast voucher is good for 1 dish and 1 drink- not including alcohol. I felt like I was in college again. What kind of bed and breakfast limits you to the bare minimum when you pay in advance for a bed and breakfast package? Was a bit weird... basically the bed and breakfast "deal" means you pay for an entree in advance. Pointless. I write very few reviews. I felt I really needed to call this business out though... if they had charged me $100 a night I'd say sure... paper thin walls and under-delivering amenities suck but whatever. When you spend over 200? Unacceptable. I feel pretty ripped off honestly. Overall: The concept of this hotel is cool and the reception/wait staff are phenomenal. The quality of the hotel itself is over-promised and under-delivered. Don't expect to be awed like you are when you look at the pictures. We booked thru Hotels.com that clearly stated free Wifi and free parking on our receipt for a 2 day stay for my daughters college tour. I see an additional charge of approx $24 on my AX card, when I inquired with both Hotel Supervisor (Will) and Hotel operations manager(Shawn) I was told it was for Wifi, parking, breakfast and some unknown gym that existed. There was zero communication from front desk about charges, the lack of transparency and double charging is NOT a good business model, especially for a hotel that is new and still under construction. Studio Allston may have agreed to a third party(Hotels.com) selling their rooms, but they CANNOT direct their customers to resolve the issue with their chosen third party seller. Which was the case for me. Poor accountability and customer service. Would NOT recommend staying out of principle and also predict future issues with customers. read more

The best proximity hotel if you're here for HOCR. It's not the Charles hotel or a Marriott, but they put effort to renovate an old hotel. Just remember you can only do so much to an old inexpensive hotel. So overlook - 1: the lack of a view - walk 100 yds to the Charles river and watch the rowers, 2: miss the in-room coffee maker - and find the commercial k-cup coffee/tea maker downstairs (in room coffee makers are a little gross anyways), 3: thin walls, we stayed 4 nights and didn't experience more noise than at any other W, Marriotts, Four seasons, or anything short of the Tokyo Imperial Hotel - anyways by 10pm all the rowers are curfewed so they can row the next day, 4: the lack of amenities like a frig, well housekeeping didn't miss a beat and left us bottles of Gatorade and protein bars (maybe it was a HOCR theme?) 5: and most importantly you are across the street from the HOCR finish line. When you're tired, dirty, and frozen you can't pay enough to roll across the street to a warm shower and bed! Hint- Endless bottle waters, apples, and cool pens if you ask the front desk nicely! read more

Look...I've never left a poor review but you really need to know before you stay here. it's a funky, cool hotel, Recently remodeled with new art in all rooms. It's a a cheap hotel before. it really looks great now..BUT...unfortunately it's putting lipstick on a pig. The walls are paper-thin and you will not get any sleep if the people next to you are having just an average conversation. Anything more than that and it's just plain loud. Also there's a nightclub going on downstairs so you've got to make sure that you have a room away from that on an upper floor or the other wing. I think I would have been okay paying 80 to $100 a night for it because hey, I get it, it's Boston and it's a cheap hotel...but they gouged us for $300 on a Saturday night and it's just not acceptable. Another bit of fun, enjoy trying to close the funky cool hanging glass barn door on your bathroom. They didn't even check to make sure it doesn't rub on the carpet so each time you opened it it was Jam open or Jam closed on you. It might seem like I'm being nitpicky but trust me, go try it I will say that the girl at the front desk, Marissa, was great and extremely accommodating helping us choose a room that night. read more

Manager Daniel Cooper kicked me and my dog out in the middle of cold Boston weather due to "noise complaint" because my dog was barking.. mind you, this is supposed to be a dog friendly hotel, and they charge an extra fee. My dog is a French bulldog... if you know dogs, you know they aren't loud dogs. At all. Told me there was nothing they could do due to "complaints and bad reviews left on yelp about my dog". I don't see any reviews about that on here, so that was also a lie. Their rates are so cheap for a reason!!! Don't stay here! Great rates! Very clean (no smell)...great comfy beds! Even the towels were good sized and not those thin kind. Love the easy parking at no cost. We were there for 7 nights and I can't think of anything that I was unhappy with. It was pretty full over Thanksgiving and noise was no worse them any other hotel. Mr. Berrio showed sincere concern about our stay and validated out return trip in May. Very convenient to Harvard Business School with a McDonalds and grocery store across the street. Lots of breakfast, lunch and dinner restaurants that are very good in the area. Will definitely be staying here when we come back again! read more

We all came back in an Uber and my other friend and I had to pay but the girl who made reservations left us behind because she had to use the bathroom. We had her wallet so we thought we'd be able to get in. We went to ask the front desk guy to see what room she was staying in and he said he had no one by that name. After walking through the whole place trying our keys we gave up... And ended up having to get a different hotel room. She later went down to the hotel front desk asking if the guy had seen us. I stayed at this hotel last year with my family. When we checked in, the room's thermostat wasn't working properly so the room was very cold. I made the mgmt staff aware and they were VERY accommodating. In fact, the manager on duty...I lost his card so I can't recall his name but he was African American...upgraded my room to a suite for the inconvenience. The long and the short of it: Lipstick on a pig. Slap on a fresh coat of paint, a few murals and faux Andy Warhol collages and toss in some Ikea furniture on a rundown Best Western (or whatever sh** motel it was) and what do you get? The Studio Allston Hotel. As far as the physical hotel itself goes, it's not the worst I've ever seen, even if the bathroom fixtures look like bleach-scrubbed '80s garbage that have likely had crack cocaine prepared in or on them at various times over the last 30 years. The rooms are clean and spacious, and the location is good - right across the street from the Charles River and that lovely park that runs along it. But then there's SA's customer service, or lack thereof. The fact that there are no phones in the rooms should be a dead giveaway. If you want to call the front desk, you have to Google "Studio Allston" and call from your cellphone. Booking help is terrible - they regularly make mistakes on bookings, and are completely inflexible when it comes time to correct these mistakes. I've dealt with them twice now, and talking with their reservation staff is frustratingly similar to trying to negotiate terms with a DMV official. Whoever they've had dealing with customers over the phone hasn't given the impression that they understand at all how hotel reservations work. The last time we stayed there (and I do mean the LAST time), the hotel was overbooked, and the second night of our advance reservation was given away to someone else. We went to the Lenox instead - a real hotel that made us wonder why we'd wanted to stay in a repainted no-tell motel to begin with. Perhaps what's most maddening about this place, though, is parking. Studio Allston purports to offer free onsite parking, only there isn't nearly enough of it. We arrived on a Friday night, which also happened to be the hotel's salsa night. The parking lot was packed with cars belonging to people who weren't paying customers of the hotel, while many paying customers had to park wherever there was space. The hotel is sandwiched between two busy roads, so there is no street parking. I parked next door, behind the Boston Skating Club, only someone didn't like that and expressed their displeasure by stuffing an entire bacon cheeseburger into my car's gas tank filler neck. Not cool. I feel like this could have been avoided if Studio Allston's staff had a more realistic logistical approach to how they run their business. I mean hell, even the immobile art van out front gets a real parking space. The f*****g art van!! My overall assessment of this place is that it's run and staffed by a bunch of smug hipsters who think that a few splashes of modern art and some social programming designed to make other hipsters feel fancy are enough to make up for a lack of good service. Unfortunately, logistics and customer service are everything in the hotel biz. When you can get better service at a Days Inn, all the trendy kitsch in the world won't make SA a more compelling option. I definitely wouldn't stay here again, but I hope SA gets its sh** together for other customers who want to stay in this part of Boston. It's pretty close to Harvard and WGBH, and it's cool to wake up and see crew teams slicing through the Charles across the street. Better yet, I hope the place gets bought by an outfit who actually knows how to run a hotel. read more

My daughter and her ice hockey team had the unfortunate experience of staying there last weekend. It supposedly offered breakfast from 7 a.m to 10 a.m. but when most of the team showed up at 9 a.m. they were told the hours had changed and WERE NOT SERVED. NOBODY had been notified of the time change. Many went hungry or went to a McDonald's which is the nearest walk as not much around there. I called and complained and asked for the manager, Daniel, to call me back--he never did. The next day the girls went down during the designated period and there was virtually NO FOOD. This was quite unfortunate both times as they virtually went unfed before each of their games which is NOT acceptable. I think I saw that the hotel rated itself as a 4 star--trust me, I would not let my dog stay there. It is barely a 1 star--DO NOT BOOK. read more

We checked in around 8pm to the hotel. There were no parking spots available so we were told to park at the bowling alley next door, which they stated was owned by them too. They gave me a sign to put on my rear view mirror, which I did. In the morning there was a nasty note from the hotel mgmt telling me my car would be towed if parked there again. It was bad enough that the hotel did not have enough parking spaces for guests, but to leave a nasty note just leaves a bad taste in my mouth as I left. In the morning, before I left, I went to grab a coffee. The coffee machine was by the back exit, not being watched. In this day and age, one would think it would be up front with the check in area. The room was fine after we put on the air conditioning. My wife felt there was a musty smell before the air was turned on. read more

They re-sold my pre-paid room and refused me at 2:30AM! My company houses us in this hotel frequently. My flight was delayed and upon my arrival I was told that my pre-paid 3-day reservation would not be honored because the computer 'accidentally' oversold the rooms. The issue was not that I arrived late, I simply got screwed (as did the 2nd to last person) because we were the last ones to show and they overbooked the hotel. They offered to send me across the river to another hotel for one-night to then return to the original hotel for the remainder. They would not agree to just cancel the reservation and said I could talk to the manager tomorrow (after I left tonight). They assured me this rarely happens and the security guard chimed in that the last time this happened was months ago. Fast forward to my cab-ride to new hotel and the cab driver says he did this same drive for someone in the same situation less than a month ago. Your reservation is worth nothing. Please don't subject yourself or your family to this. read more
