I thought that a little time would help me get over the most horrible hair experience I've ever had in my life. Well a week later and I'm still all the way in my feelings about this experience. I've never written a review before, but I thought that since this is where I learned of the salon it was only right to post my feedback here. Well let's see, here's a run down: New to the area, was looking for someone who could work with a short style, relaxed with a color. Stylist: Ngina Pros: very pleasant assistant, Robin (I believe) Cons: 1) Ngina was 45 minutes late arriving to the salon. My appointment was at 11am. She showed up at 11:45am. There was someone already waiting when I arrived. When she arrived she stated that she had several errands to run that morning. It was a Tuesday morning and if I wasn't mistaken she had Sunday and Monday off. Now barring some emergency (which would be understandable) leisurely errands should not be scheduled the same time as your appointments. 2) I was a new client and I found Ngina to not be very pleasant, warm or friendly at all. I would have been happy with a "hello, welcome, nice to meet you", or something. Just some acknowledgment that I was new. Nothing at all. She came in and started working. 3) I was scheduled for a relaxer. And if you're like me when you need a relaxer, I was excited! Lol. That all went out the window when she applied relaxer to my skin - front edges. Yes, my skin. After realizing it was there several minutes later she wiped it off with a towel too hard. My poor skin was on fire the rest of the day (and the next). It was red and eventually blistered up. 4) Now honestly, I could have probably dealt with the lateness, unfriendliness and application of relaxer to my forehead and not have even written this if it wasn't for the butchering of my hair. That's where all bets are off. I have a semi short style. My ends were in need of being trimmed, as is usually the case when you get a relaxer. The trim was a literal hack job to my hair. The most uneven cut I've ever received in my life. And I purposely use the word cut. I had no idea how bad it really was until I washed my hair and was able to see it straight. Again, I have a short style so I don't have extra strands to give. I just don't. 5) The styling left a lot to be desired. Tight curls. Had me walking out there looking like Shirley Temple. But honestly, I'd take the tight curls if I didn't have to deal with 1-4! Overall, I was just not pleased at all. I know that there's got to be good stylists in the area so I'll continue to search. I am flat out in love with this place! I came on Saturday to have the rest of my ombré filled in to full color. The first time I went, Octavia was able to lift my hair one time and I was on my way. This time she suggested a lift and tone to reduce the brassy color that my ombré had turned. I'm glad I trusted her opinion! I absolutely love my new color! The other plus about this place is that the other stylists seemed to make recommendations in the best interest of the clients as opposed to the best interest of their pockets. I overheard a stylist suggesting a different style of haircut that would flatter her face more. My nosey self also listened as a stylist talked to her client about how to maintain her hairstyle throughout the week. Last but not least, the woman who shampooed my hair (I don't know her name, short blonde hair) has the hands of a magician! I absolutely loved the way she washed my hair! Thanks again Octavia! My first experience was great. Unfortunately, I was unable to have a second experience. Trish totally ignored several texts and two calls regarding a scheduled appointment. I've never encountered so much indifference from a "luxury" hair salon. Jennifer at Acqua Nails has a better response time - and she has the same volume and a better location. The good thing is, it's DC metro. So, I have options. And of course, Trish and the other beauty technicians have more clients - they can selectively respond to about scheduled appointments. So I had the most comfortable waxing experience with Brittany. I hadnt waxed in over a year so I was praying for the best. Lol surprisingly this was the quickest and most painless wax I've ever had! Brittany is super sweet, professional, and FUNNY (instead of asking if I wanted to wax between the cheeks she said "did you wanna do your tail feathers?" ) My skin is not irritated at all and usually after waxes it tingles a bit. My daughter needed to get her hair done for senior pictures. We were still going to her old hair dresser in Northern VA but needed to find a shop closer to home. I read all the reviews and thought I would try Studio Chique. We had to come in same day as her picture day which meant early enough to make her appointment. They came in early to accommodate us. The owner was very responsive to my questions and requests. My daughter's hair was amazing and her pictures look awesome! She also loved the inside of the shop as well. It's not easy getting a new shop right the first time. A good hairdresser is as hard to find as a good mechanic and a good church. Glad this worked out. read more

This was a pretty bad experience. I went a few months ago, and saw Candice - she wasn't very professional, so when I came back last weekend, I decided to try someone else, and I went to Hunnora. I got there on time for my 2:30 appointment, but no one was around, so the receptionist washed my hair after a reasonably short wait. I sat under a dryer and got shuttled around to a few different seats, then Hunnora came and got me. I wasn't impressed with her manner or with the way my hair was done. Rough and uncomfortable blow drying, and the flat ironing took a long time, was very uncomfortable, and used a LOT of hairspray, which I don't care for. She criticized me at length for heat damage to my hair, but she didn't offer any products or solutions. My hair didn't smell very good at the end, either. She started slathering holding cream on my edges, then asked me if I liked it. I told her I didn't, and she told me neither did she, so that was a little perplexing. The price for what I was getting, "basic," was $50+, so I thought I might have to pay more, but I didn't expect the $65 I was charged. I stopped going to my last salon because I didn't find them very professional, but this was somehow less professional, lower quality, and more expensive, so I won't be back. Two stars instead of one because they had appointments available at the last minute and I was out around 4:30, which could have been a lot worse, given the atmosphere at the salon. read more

I haven't written a review before, but based on the wonderful service I received at this business, it's only right that I brag about the quality and professionalism at Studio Chique. I went in for a Brazilian Wax and like many people was pretty anxious beforehand. However, Tyra talked me through the process, made sure everything was comfortable for me during the wax--from the temperature of the wax to the room temperature itself. The front desk receptionist was also very sweet and polite. So I really appreciate the whole process being so smooth! Thanks so much for this positive experience and great customer service! I went in for a sew in with leave out, was charged $820, and the leave out wasn't even blended nicely. I had to go to an UNLICENSED 19 year old to fix me up and give me a closure to hide this mess. My scalp has also been itching like a mad dog since i've gotten this installed. Will never be going back to this salon. I have long 4a/4b hair. Even though it's a black salon, every time I went there I was made to feel bad about how long it takes to do my hair up. Even up charging me because my hair was "long" (mid back). Overall there were general complaints about my texture that I would not have expected from black salon. Part of the reason for seeking a black salon is to feel comfortable and not made to feel different or "embarrassed" about your hair texture. Unfortunately, I felt all of those feelings here. Maybe the problem is they still prefer permed hair or deal with short hair or weaves on so many occasions that working with naturally healthy, thick and long Afro hair is seen as a chore to them ...which they felt so comfortable voicing to me, the client, smh. Whatever the case, I constantly felt very stressed about going there and wondering what next someone was going to say about my natural hair being a problem. It demonstrated a lack of awareness and decorum. I ended up just changing salons. There are wonderful black stylists at the Drybar in Penn Quarter I highly recommend. I had such a wonderful experience at Studio Chique. Ngina is a highly skilled precision cut stylist! I loved my hair style so much! For the past few months I'd been wearing crochet braids as a protective style and before that I was searching for a permanent stylist/salon home after moving to DC over a year ago so my hair was a little all over the place. Ngina gave me a great consult and really listened to what I was looking for. She checked my hair while it was dry, wet, and discussed the look I wanted again to be sure we were on the same page before she got started. Her work certainly exceeded my expectations. Also, she was focused on customer service. She kept the energy up in the salon and made everyone feel welcomed. All of the staff worked well together and were focused on their jobs while interacting with clients in a friendly, professional manner. Oh boy where do I start? I saw someone post on Instagram about this salon and decided to Uber over and see if someone could take me as a walk in. This place is located in a rough area, but I still went in as I didn't want to waste a trip. I walked up a staircase and the guy at the front desk was eating a bowl of soup, while on the phone. There were several staff members sitting with nothing to do and still no one greeted me. I decided to sit down on the pretty chair in the lobby/ Salon/ Nail area. As I sat there waiting for the receptionist to finish what he was doing I noticed the Nail Technician eating chinese take out at her nail station... eew I look to my left and see two women whom I believe to be stylists. I smiled and still they said nothing. Unfortunately I had to just get up and leave the salon after being ignored. This place lacks professionalism and I wont be returning. I just had a Brazilian wax done here by Tynisha. I have been getting waxes for some years now and this by far was one of the best waxes I have ever gotten in my life. I am not just talking about the actual wax process, but also the professionalism, cleanliness, grace and knowledge! First and foremost, the location is easily accessible. Located right on GA ave, easy to spot, street parking. Second, the place is clean. I was greeted immediately by the receptionist who checked me in and escorted me upstairs (he could have easily said upstairs to the right, but he escorted me there-it's the small things). Tynisha greeted me with a firm handshake and explained the next steps. She made me feel extremely comfortable. She then explained the different types of waxes she had on site- which I appreciated. I opted with the basic wax which my Groupon covered but you can get the other waxes and pay the difference. She showed me this coconut oil kind of wax and demonstrated it's effectiveness but putting some on my hand to show how it works, it it was so smooth! Definitely a wax that I will have to come back and try! Also, never heard of that wax before and I've been to SEVERAL salons various areas. As for the actual procedure, I can definitely tell that she has been in the business for 21 years. She was smooth and swift. Although no wax is going to feel like a massage, her movements made this one of the smoothest, least painful waxes I have ever received. She also had great follow up instructions, some suggestions on products and just some overall knowledge in general. I definitely would recommended her for waxing whether it's your first or if you're a vet. Flawless experience-I can't emphasize that enough. I've been a client of Studio Chique since 2019. I've had my hair done (curly wash & go), eyebrow wax, and most recently for a massage. This review is for my massage with Patreece. It was amazing! Pre-covid I'd try to get a massage once a quarter or more frequently, but this was the first time I've been this year - clearly overdue. Of all the massages I've ever had, this was by far one of the best! Patreece is super polite & welcoming and very skilled. I came in with a sprained muscle in my hand and less than 24 hours later, the pain is completely gone. I've never had a massage that was equally therapeutic (really working muscle tension) and relaxing. Very good in terms of how easy it was to book an appointment. I came for a wash, blow dry, and trim. However, one of the hairstylist didn't fully blow out my hair for the trim. When the next hairstylist took over to do my trim, she complained how the other stylist didn't do a good blow dry. She ended up cutting more than what was shown to me at the beginning. In addition, I didn't find out that I was also being charged for the density of my hair until I checked out. The receptionist tried to charge $76, an extra $26 for my hair density. The stylist ended up correcting it to $10. I hate that I had to get charged because I can't change my hair density. This was the first time I have ever been charged for it. I was looking last minute appointment a couple of days before I got into town and I was surprised they had availability. This is the best salon I've ever gone to in my life honestly, it's beautiful inside, the ladies are beautiful, nice and professional. I thought I had microlinks but turns out I didn't but I wasn't turned away, I wasn't told they would take me cause another person did my work, they worked with what I had and my hair looks, feels and smells amazing! This salon is not good for those with natural hair. Just being honest. The shampoo girls are not trained to manage natural hair..they combing from the roots and pulling the hair out. Products are key as well, they should have products which make the hair manageable. This is not a good salon for naturals. Also there was a lady present (maybe the manager), that kept reprimanding the shampoo girls, while I was there, which made me very uncomfortable. Very unprofessional! My last visit to Studio Chique Salon was a complete nightmare. I have been to this salon before and received awesome service from Ngina (the owner) which is why I am surprised that my visit on March 16th was terrible. I had a closure wig unit constructed by a wig specialist in Atlanta (my home state where people can actually do hair) and since I live in DC for school, I decided to take it to this salon for a press and style(I shampoo the unit myself). The first time was great. However, the second time I decided to have this service done, the lace on the closure was torn. No one could figure out how it happened but all I know is that there was not a tare in the wig prior to my appointment. I was devastated. I spent a total of $800 for this unit using premium virgin Remy hair extensions. Ngina the owner offered to carelessly repair the wig (she just stitched the lace up) but she did not offer to replace the closure that was torn by one of her employees. Ngina was very loud and aggressive when telling me that she was not going to complementary replace the closure and she made me feel as though it was my fault. She also made it perfectly clear that her salon would no longer work on wigs that were not constructed in her salon. I really hate to be this person to leave this review, but I just feel that something more could have been done. She did say that the closure could be replaced if I bought a closure from her and when it comes to purchasing one from her, she would have needed to give me half off. Her closure is $150. She wanted me to buy another closure to replace the one that was torn in her salon. Oh Please! I have nothing against Ngina and her staff is very nice however this last incident has put a bad taste in my mouth. I am hopeful they take this review into consideration for improvement. I have mixed feelings about my experience with this salon. I wanted to get my hair done for a special event coming up but wanted to try the style out prior to the day. I found this salon on Yelp and had a lot of questions. My questions were answered quickly using Yelp to send messages. I was told about what hair to get,what the charge would be and was able to set up an appointment. Once there, however, it became clear that I was corresponding with the receptionist eventhough the messages were being signed by the stylist (who is also the owner). She kept saying how the style called for a different type of hair but said she would make what I brought work. The price was also higher than what I was quoted. This also happened to the woman checking out before me. She was also quoted a different price by the same receptionist. The worst part was that the stylist didnt work on the day I wanted my hair done for the event eventhough I gave the date when I made my initial appointment. My hair came out cute but it doesn't matter since she cant do my hair for my event. If you get quoted a price make sure you are actually talking to a stylist or be prepared to pay more. If you're corresponding through text or yelp messages ask if its a stylist even if they sign that they are because chances are you're messaging with a receptionist. read more

The customer service with her is FANTASTIC and she really works to meet your needs for the session. I have gone to her twice and she makes great recommendations and she is just so professional! Hair Service: Got my hair blown out back in December and I have very thick hair and of course it's natural. But the young lady that is Ngina's assistant was so sweet and so nice and very professional. i like that I had Ngina to so my hair because she has her own little private area with washbowl and dryers. AND I didn't sit under a dryer, I sat under a steamer that was different and my hair very much appreciated it. Ngina HOOKED my hair up! I was SLAYED and LAYED for the GAWDS HONEY!!!!! Tynisha did my wax - I opted for the white chocolate. Definitely recommend spending the extra $15. It was the quickest and most painless I have ever had. She is clearly a pro. Went to Studio Chique on Tuesday, June 2nd and had the best experience. I've been a long time supporter of local businesses and the customer service here is top notch. Even though it was the first week of the Reopening of the city the salon staff was fully prepared and helped to answer all of my questions before my appointment. Everyone wore masks; Customers were asked to sanitize hands when entering; staff sanitized equipment frequently and clients were kept far far from one another so no one was too close (salon has two floors allowing for extra space). Extra points that my relaxer service was amazing and my stylist Ngina slayed like always. Highly recommend booking your hair appointment ASAP. read more

I was a returning customer and if it wasn't for Tynisha, I would not come back. I purchased a Groupon to try the massaging services back in January of 2018 and then life happened. I purchased another Groupon 10 months later in October, for a different type of massage. I can barely recall what happened few months ago so of course I did not remember buying a Groupon prior to that. The young man at the desk did not check or let me know about the fine print about only being able to redeem it one time. At the time of the service I was asked to pay the full amount for the massage and to ask Groupon for my money back. Though I did not agree from a customer service stand point, I obliged. I asked the young man to have the owner reach out to me and to this day, still have yet to receive a call. The times I returned, the owner was not in. I reached out to Groupon and was unsuccessful with the return. This has definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. Additionally, the scheduling verbiage online is misleading, prebooking to me means booking online before you come in, not booking after my appointment. One of my friends who was referred also had this issue. This was not clear and I was charged different prices for my waxes. I then a year later was explained that it is for returning hair clients for the discounts of pre-booking. On top of all of that, I referred 3 customers to the salon. Two for waxing and one for hair. As a client who also works in customer service, I am deeply disappointed and will not be returning. The friends that I referred will also be leaving. As a tip to new clients, ask questions and always make clear of the services prices! read more
