Today is my birthday. I never go to the salon to get my hair done but I thought I should treat myself this once. I had an appointment for a silk press at 10am. First of all, I had to wait over 30 minutes before I was sat in the washing chair. Then, as soon as I sit down in the chair one of the stylists YELLING across the shop basically complaining about how much hair I have and how it's going to take a long time to do my hair. Granted, I do have mid-back length natural hair, but it was the most unprofessional thing ever to have to wait over 30minutes and then as soon as I sit down all I hear are complaints about how I have too much hair. How do you call yourselves a natural hair salon and you complain when clients have lengthy natural hair?! It was disgusting. I was so uncomfortable, and then on top of that I am supposed to let you do my hair and pay you for the service?! NO. I did not even want to be there anymore so I just walked out before the lady even started washing my hair. It was the most RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL experience I have EVER had and I will never go back here again!! If you have short hair then maybe it's the salon for you but if you have a decent length of natural hair prepare for the complaints!!! IF I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS I WOULD. In a sentence: The Royale Brazilian Wax was lovely and the staff is so kind, but I had a small hiccup with the Groupon. After a bad experience at another salon, I needed to find a new place, so I purchased a Groupon for a Brazilian Wax here. The groupon was about $35 for a $65 value. After looking online, I saw The Royale advertised for $65. (Screenshot attached). I made my appointment and was set. However, when I got there the receptionist told me the Groupon only covered the soft wax and hard wax was an extra $10, The Royale was an extra $32 (which ended up being wrong). I knew I wasn't crazy. My Groupon had a $65 value and I remembered seeing The Royale advertised for $65 regular price. However, Adrienne, the aesthetician, told me I was only allowed the soft wax then went to get the owner to further explain. After a short discussion, the owner offered to give me The Royale. The actual wax itself was great! Adrienne was thorough and took her time. She used a mixture of hard and soft wax (strips) which I didn't mind because I'm literally hairless. The mask and hot towel were a nice touch as well. Overall, the staff was friendly, helpful, and talented. The wax was great. I will start off by saying I ended up liking the finished product of my hair. Also, the woman at the front desk is extremely nice and was one of the only enjoyable parts about my service. That being said the girls who are washing hair either do not have a clue how to wash hair or are not paying attention when they are doing it. I called earlier that day to add on a scalp treatment to my wash. I was told on the phone that I could "absolutely" have that added on. However, I never received the treatment and by the time I realized I didn't actually get the treatment, a young woman was already finishing blowdrying my hair. However, as I waited for my actual silk press to begin, I noticed the entire front portion of my hair still had a ton of dandruff. It was absolutely ridiculous. This is also the second time I have gone here and felt like my scalp was not clean after a wash. As a black hair salon I would expect at the very least when I pay for a wash, for my hair to feel clean-scalp treatment or not. When Whitney was finishing flat ironing my hair and saw the amount of dandruff I still had, instead of offering a discounted or free wash next time, she just combed through the dandruff and told me I should get a scalp treatment next time, as if that is not exactly what I booked this time. I desperately needed a trim but many hair salons in my area were not taking new clients for months. I found Studio Chique through Instagram and decided to take a chance. I'm glad I did! Their website is easy to navigate through and they are taking detailed precautions through this pandemic. You're required to sign a Covid-19 waiver before your appointment and sanitize your hands. Everyone is wearing a mask and they placed clients at good distances. I got a Silk press and trim with Nia and I loved the outcome. She was friendly and answered any of my questions. Awful. I've been here a few times but this by far was the worst experience I've had and I won't be coming back. Where to start... 1. The assistant who washed my hair, scrubbed it with her nails so hard that I have a scab on my scalp. I had to ask her to stop because the shampoo started stinging the area she scratched. 2. I came in for a braid down & U-part wig styling. The stylist asked a second assistant to braid my hair. After she struggled for 30 minutes to do a braid down -- my stylist was finally ready. She took one look at what had been done and said it was done so poorly so she was going to take it ALL OUT and start over. So... I had my hair braided TWICE. Waste of time. 3. My stylist redid the braids.... and now 24 hours after my appointment, my braids are coming undone. Waste of money. 4. I truly don't understand why this salon charges a late fee..... but then doesn't even run on time! The assistant calls you if your 5 minutes past your appointment but then when you check in... you'll be waiting for 25-30 minutes after a wash to see your stylist. It's so bizarre to me that they make customers pay but then keep them waiting. Double standard. I value that this salon is trying to train new stylists or assistants -- but I'm not paying good money to be a test dummy for someone to learn how to braid hair.... Only for it to be redone as soon as I see stylist. Don't do that to your paying customers. The end product is always beautiful but not worth the pain, the scabs, the hassle and the wait. I'm going to preface this review by saying that the two stylists that I interacted with (the one I was originally booked with and the one who actually did my hair) were very nice. However, it is clear that this salon is not for people with natural hair - or at least people with a lot of thick (4b/4c) hair like me. I read A LOT of reviews about the salon and was extremely hesitant to go because they were mixed (at best) but I'm desperately looking for a regular stylist/salon. When I arrived, the woman at the front desk said "you're here for a flexi-rod set right?" And I told her I wanted twists for a twist out. When you go to book online, there is only one option that says "Sets Flexi-Rods, Twist Sets, Up-Dos." I assumed that any of the stylists that I booked with would be able to do any of the above. However, the stylist I booked with greeted me not too long after I arrived and said "you're here for a flexi rod set, right?" and I told her I wanted a twist out. Well, as I was going through the shampoo and conditioning process, I pieced together from the stylists' conversations that the stylist I originally booked with didn't know how to do twists. It wasn't until far into my appointment that I was told my original stylist wouldn't be doing my hair. The first woman who took me to the shampoo bowl put her hands in hair for a good 15 seconds then told me she was just going to put the cape on me and another woman would be washing my hair. As she was walking away from me, she said something to the effect of "I don't do natural hair like that, I do weaves" and laughed, as did some of the other stylists. The salon is extremely small so everyone heard her comment. I don't think I need to explain why that entire interaction was incredibly unprofessional and problematic. I'm certainly aware that my hair can be a lot of work (hence why I'm looking for a regular stylist so I no longer have to do it myself) and I'm aware of the work that it takes to not only wash but also style it with care. Unfortunately, this salon doesn't appear to have anyone who truly knows how to take care of natural hair. The woman who took over to shampoo me was also clearly not used to working with a client with my density/texture. She thought my hair was tangled (though I'd freshly detangled it) and only realized it wasn't once she ran water on it. She struggled to detangle it at the shampoo bowl with whatever conditioner she used (I assume it wasn't meant for natural hair or for detangling.) I literally felt her hand shaking each and every time she used the comb to work through my hair as she struggled to detangle it. Luckily, it wasn't painful but it was clear she did not know how to handle natural hair. When I got in the chair for my style, I was horrified when the stylist started combing my hair without ANY product. The original stylist who I booked with was also helping with the dangling process and she didn't say anything or add and product either. That confirmed to me that this salon (or at least these stylists) doesn't normally deal with hair like mine. Again, while the stylist (who I wasn't originally booked with but took over) was detangling, her hand was shaking like crazy as she tried to detangle. The only product that she used was the mousse for the twists. I will admit I should have insisted she put some leave-in conditioner in my hair but at that point, I was just hoping that my I wasn't losing too much hair and that I'd get out of there soon. In the end, the twist out was okay. It was dry and did not last - I ended up retwisting my hair a day or two later and adding all of the products that should have been used during my original appointment. Bottom line: I was very disappointed, though both stylists I dealt with were nice, and will continue my search for a true natural hair salon in DC. read more

I had a 7am appointment and was immediately seated for service upon arrival. I was a bit apprehensive about getting a silk press and expressed that with the owner Ngina Thomas. She was very receptive and understanding and reassured me that she reassessed and addressed the issue. And that she made some improvements to ensure the safety and outcomes of black hair; as it pertains to curl revert. This was comforting. I left pleasantly pleased with my hair and the overall experience. I would post a pic but my curls dropped immediately leaving the salon. That is at no fault to Ngina..but my hair is just extremely fine so curls never last. Curling my hair is an exercise in futility. How have I lived in DC for a decade and not known about this place?!?! A friend of mine (who clearly had been holding out on me) just let me in on her little secret for the best massage in town. I was having some serious neck, shoulder, and back issues a few weeks ago. And even though I've been getting a monthly massage at my nearest Massage Envy for almost 2 years now, my favorite masseuse there had no openings and I needed an immediate appointment. Enter Studio Chique! Patreece is a MASTER masseuse. I got a deep (firm) pressure massage, and it was one of the best I've ever had in my whole life. In fact, I think she's even better than my usual monthly masseuse. Even though you'll feel a bit of discomfort at various times during the service, it is sooooooooo worth it when it's all over and you realize you have a range of motion in your neck and release of tension in your shoulders that you didn't even think was possible. I'm sold! I will DEFINITELY be back to book more sessions with Patreece. I give my experience here 4.5 stars. Almost everything was 5 stars, including (1) friendly reception staff, (2) the availability of same-day appointments, (3) an easy online booking process, along with automatic text reminders, (4) a beautifully decorated spa and salon that looks luxe and clean, (5) a wonderful ambiance and vibe, and (6) the massage itself, complete with a relaxing hand and foot scrub at the end. The only reason I had to deduct 1/2 a star is because I couldn't fully zone out during the massage for two reasons. First, there was a weird smell in the room when I first arrived. It reminded me of old school black hair care products, and I couldn't tell if that was smelling something used in the salon or if this was some type of incense or candle. Either way, I didn't like the smell. But I stopped noticing it after a while. Second, there were some competing noises that could still be heard while in the treatment room. Even though the spa sounds in the treatment room were turned up fairly loudly, I could still faintly hear the different music being played outside the door in the rest of the salon. Also, because the salon is plop in the middle of a busy urban street, you could also hear some environmental noises. I heard what sounded like sirens going by at one point, and there must have been some construction going on in a neighboring building because there was some occasional banging or work zone noise. Again, none of these things were loud enough or terrible enough to ruin my massage experience, but I'm not used to having to deal with that when I'm supposed to just be getting a relaxing or therapeutic treatment. I received a Nift to Studio Chique (a neighborhood gift, it's pretty clever actually) so naturally I came to Yelp to check out the reviews. At first I wanted to get a facial, but after reading the reviews about how wonderful Marsha the masseuse is so I decided to get a massage instead. Upon arriving I was greeted by multiple people. Overall the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. The salon is beautiful and has multiple floors. Completely unexpected based on the surrounding building and outside facade. Marsha's warm approach and magical hands lived up to the many raving Yelp reviews. I have never had a professional massage before and she explained everything to me and answered all of my questions. I went with the deep tissue massage which was quite intense, but definitely needed as I have sports related injuries and plenty of knots/tightness due to the gym. You walk into their salon and it's not only beautiful and relaxing, but you are getting pampered the whole entire time. Overall, the style I received was very nice, but the experience was not. It was really taxing being there for 8 hours. I didn't feel like a priority at all, which is a very uncomfortable feeling especially when you're paying half a grand for services. The amount of time and waiting around while people who came hours after me were taken care of is what made this feel like a regular salon I could find anywhere. I also, think prices should be discussed before carrying out a service. Does the patron know that every thing they discuss will be an added $200 or will they find out when it's time to pay? Having a price chart and clear discussion with your client will prevent any confusion and provide transparency. Also, after coloring asking the client if they are happy with it, or have any changes they want to make before styling will also improve communication and make for a better experience. I had the worst experience at Studio Chique. The stylist completely ruined my full and years grown long natural hair by overprocessing it and then cutting it all off without my approval. The owner Ngina is a nightmare as she takes NO ACCOUNTABILITY and gas lights by making a million ridiculous excuses for the result and actions of her stylists and will try to convince you to believe the damage is your fault, science, comparison, etc. Even worse, this lady examined my hair and told me it was NOT damaged when it was DESTROYED and made the statement that she did not see what my hair was like before. I'm new to the area and my hair desperately needed a silk press, color and a trim... this salon had it all - and was so helpful in fixing my look while taking extra steps to condition my hair (thank you, Ngina for your amazing work!!). Before even touching my hair - we had a conversation about what I wanted, and they gave me their recommendations (how refreshing!!). When it came time for my trim, she told me how much she thought I needed cut -- but let me decide what I was comfortable with. My hair is SILKLY smooth and so soft. The absolute worse experience ever. I booked way in advance initially with Ngina 1 process color, precision cut & mold etc and I was passed along & booked with Whitney without notice as a first time client. I booked the best way I knew how with the lack of precise booking system they have. Cancellation is very unclear which is unacceptable. I left work early, arrange a sitter to drive all the way from Upper Marlboro Md to drive all the way to Georgia Ave to be told 30 mins before my appointment my color will take 4 hours and basically I need to settle for whatever is offered and or book an 2 week out appointment with unprofessional Whitney. Whitney had no intentions on accommodating me in no way as a new client. There was no curtsy called made, consultation or anything. I was furious as a black woman who has a business also helping another black owned business it made me regret it. FYI don't put any card on file because if so & you are forced to cancel like my situation that was completely out of my control & there is no sympathy & remains a charge being made. I love coming to studio chique! With my hair type (4c) I'm very careful about who does my hair because most people don't know how but here at studio chique my 4c strands are handled with care. The experience here is luxurious from start to finish. The customer service is phenomenal and I never feel out of place. The stylist especially the owner Ngina are VERY accommodating. You will leave here with not only a bounce in your curl but also an extra bounce in your step. I've never encountered so much indifference from a "luxury" hair salon. Jennifer at Acqua Nails has a better response time - and she has the same volume and a better location. I thought that a little time would help me get over the most horrible hair experience I've ever had in my life. Well a week later and I'm still all the way in my feelings about this experience. I've never written a review before, but I thought that since this is where I learned of the salon it was only right to post my feedback here. Well let's see, here's a run down: New to the area, was looking for someone who could work with a short style, relaxed with a color. Stylist: Ngina Pros: very pleasant assistant, Robin (I believe) Cons: 1) Ngina was 45 minutes late arriving to the salon. My appointment was at 11am. She showed up at 11:45am. There was someone already waiting when I arrived. When she arrived she stated that she had several errands to run that morning. It was a Tuesday morning and if I wasn't mistaken she had Sunday and Monday off. Now barring some emergency (which would be understandable) leisurely errands should not be scheduled the same time as your appointments. 2) I was a new client and I found Ngina to not be very pleasant, warm or friendly at all. I would have been happy with a "hello, welcome, nice to meet you", or something. Just some acknowledgment that I was new. Nothing at all. She came in and started working. 3) I was scheduled for a relaxer. And if you're like me when you need a relaxer, I was excited! Lol. That all went out the window when she applied relaxer to my skin - front edges. Yes, my skin. After realizing it was there several minutes later she wiped it off with a towel too hard. My poor skin was on fire the rest of the day (and the next). It was red and eventually blistered up. 4) Now honestly, I could have probably dealt with the lateness, unfriendliness and application of relaxer to my forehead and not have even written this if it wasn't for the butchering of my hair. That's where all bets are off. I have a semi short style. My ends were in need of being trimmed, as is usually the case when you get a relaxer. The trim was a literal hack job to my hair. The most uneven cut I've ever received in my life. And I purposely use the word cut. I had no idea how bad it really was until I washed my hair and was able to see it straight. Again, I have a short style so I don't have extra strands to give. I just don't. 5) The styling left a lot to be desired. Tight curls. Had me walking out there looking like Shirley Temple. But honestly, I'd take the tight curls if I didn't have to deal with 1-4! Overall, I was just not pleased at all. I know that there's got to be good stylists in the area so I'll continue to search. So I had the most comfortable waxing experience with Brittany. I hadnt waxed in over a year so I was praying for the best. Lol surprisingly this was the quickest and most painless wax I've ever had! Brittany is super sweet, professional, and FUNNY (instead of asking if I wanted to wax between the cheeks she said "did you wanna do your tail feathers?" ) My skin is not irritated at all and usually after waxes it tingles a bit. I have long 4a/4b hair. Even though it's a black salon, every time I went there I was made to feel bad about how long it takes to do my hair up. Even up charging me because my hair was "long" (mid back). Overall there were general complaints about my texture that I would not have expected from black salon. Part of the reason for seeking a black salon is to feel comfortable and not made to feel different or "embarrassed" about your hair texture. Unfortunately, I felt all of those feelings here. Maybe the problem is they still prefer permed hair or deal with short hair or weaves on so many occasions that working with naturally healthy, thick and long Afro hair is seen as a chore to them ...which they felt so comfortable voicing to me, the client, smh. Whatever the case, I constantly felt very stressed about going there and wondering what next someone was going to say about my natural hair being a problem. It demonstrated a lack of awareness and decorum. I ended up just changing salons. There are wonderful black stylists at the Drybar in Penn Quarter I highly recommend. My daughter needed to get her hair done for senior pictures. We were still going to her old hair dresser in Northern VA but needed to find a shop closer to home. I read all the reviews and thought I would try Studio Chique. We had to come in same day as her picture day which meant early enough to make her appointment. They came in early to accommodate us. The owner was very responsive to my questions and requests. My daughter's hair was amazing and her pictures look awesome! She also loved the inside of the shop as well. It's not easy getting a new shop right the first time. A good hairdresser is as hard to find as a good mechanic and a good church. Glad this worked out. read more

I haven't written a review before, but based on the wonderful service I received at this business, it's only right that I brag about the quality and professionalism at Studio Chique. I went in for a Brazilian Wax and like many people was pretty anxious beforehand. However, Tyra talked me through the process, made sure everything was comfortable for me during the wax--from the temperature of the wax to the room temperature itself. The front desk receptionist was also very sweet and polite. So I really appreciate the whole process being so smooth! Thanks so much for this positive experience and great customer service! I am flat out in love with this place! I came on Saturday to have the rest of my ombré filled in to full color. The first time I went, Octavia was able to lift my hair one time and I was on my way. This time she suggested a lift and tone to reduce the brassy color that my ombré had turned. I'm glad I trusted her opinion! I absolutely love my new color! The other plus about this place is that the other stylists seemed to make recommendations in the best interest of the clients as opposed to the best interest of their pockets. I overheard a stylist suggesting a different style of haircut that would flatter her face more. My nosey self also listened as a stylist talked to her client about how to maintain her hairstyle throughout the week. Last but not least, the woman who shampooed my hair (I don't know her name, short blonde hair) has the hands of a magician! I absolutely loved the way she washed my hair! Thanks again Octavia! I'll definitely be back for all of my hair coloring needs. Tip: you should know that all the services are a la carte so there is no shock when you check out. I went in for a sew in with leave out, was charged $820, and the leave out wasn't even blended nicely. I had to go to an UNLICENSED 19 year old to fix me up and give me a closure to hide this mess. My scalp has also been itching like a mad dog since i've gotten this installed. Will never be going back to this salon. I go could go into more detail about my overall salon experience but i'd rather not drag Alana anymore because her work speaks for itself. read more

This was a pretty bad experience. I went a few months ago, and saw Candice - she wasn't very professional, so when I came back last weekend, I decided to try someone else, and I went to Hunnora. I got there on time for my 2:30 appointment, but no one was around, so the receptionist washed my hair after a reasonably short wait. I sat under a dryer and got shuttled around to a few different seats, then Hunnora came and got me. I wasn't impressed with her manner or with the way my hair was done. Rough and uncomfortable blow drying, and the flat ironing took a long time, was very uncomfortable, and used a LOT of hairspray, which I don't care for. She criticized me at length for heat damage to my hair, but she didn't offer any products or solutions. My hair didn't smell very good at the end, either. She started slathering holding cream on my edges, then asked me if I liked it. I told her I didn't, and she told me neither did she, so that was a little perplexing. The price for what I was getting, "basic," was $50+, so I thought I might have to pay more, but I didn't expect the $65 I was charged. I stopped going to my last salon because I didn't find them very professional, but this was somehow less professional, lower quality, and more expensive, so I won't be back. Two stars instead of one because they had appointments available at the last minute and I was out around 4:30, which could have been a lot worse, given the atmosphere at the salon. read more
