Ngina is amazing!!! So I haven't been to a salon in over 3 years. The past 3 years my cousin was sewing in weave for me. I never let my hair breathe during that time so finally I decided I need to take care of my hair so I came on yelp to find a good black hair salon. I came across the reviews for Ngina and every review (except one) said she was great especially with natural hair. So basically 85% of my hair is natural from having it corn rolled under my weave for 3 years. I wasn't sure if goin back to perms was a wise decision but I still booked an appointment for a perm. Her salon is on the top floor. It's very clean and quiet. It's a little small but comfortable as well. I waited a little while because someone was in her chair however I was late myself so that was not an issue. Since I scheduled a perm she told her assistant to get things in order for that. But I told Ngina I would really like for her to look at my hair first to see what's the best thing I should do. So she finished the girl who was in her chair (7 min max) came and took a look. I told her my hair story and from the inspection she felt it was best not to do a perm since the majority of my hair was damaged. I have very very thick and coarse hair so not taming it with a perm scared me lol but she told me not to worry because she'll have my hair looking as if it's permed so I put my trust in her. And plus as I was getting shampooed and sitting under the dryer I saw the finished product with a couple of her client which boosted my confidence in her. She also recommended a deep conditioning and a trim. Her assistant was nice and thorough. She shampooed my hair, put the deep conditioning in, and sat me under the steamer. After washing the deep conditioning out, I sat under the hair dryer. *SIDENOTE* I looove how I didn't sit under the steamer or drying for a millions years! I feel like most stylists do that to kill time because they're overbooked and trying to hurry up and finish heads. Anyways when I finally got in Ngina's chair she was warm and pleasant. She asked a lot of questions to get a feel for what I wanted. She did another very thorough blow dry with a brush. Then came to trim. Before she just went ahead and started cutting off all my dead ends she showed me the length of my hair and then showed me all the dead ends and asked if I was comfortable with cutting off about 3 1/2 -4 in of dead ends and I was perfectly fine wit it! What's the point of having long hair if its just gonna be thin and dead? She did a amazing job with the cut. Then she hot combed my hair. Haven't had that done since I was a little girl lol. Anyways she used the flat iron to style my hair. She was absolutely thorough in everything she did. Took her sweet time to ensure every strand was straight. Even used those cute small flat iron to get my edges. She did a standard style. Bumped my ends with a left bang. When I looked in the mirror all I could do is say WOW! I could not believe she transformed my thick coarse hair into this straight, bouncy, and shiny hair. I couldn't believe she had my hair looking like it's permed without doing so. AS LONG AS NGINA LIVES IM NEVER GETTING A PERM AGAIN!!!! So needless to say I'm a very happy customer and have told everybody about her. And u wanna know the best thing about it? It only took about an hour and a half. I got there at 1pm and was out the door by 2:45. I love it! Clean work environment, great atmosphere, wonderful personality, and a beautiful finish! People walking by me on the street even complimented me so I know this isn't all in my head lol. Since I've last seen her which was 3 weeks ago my hair is still shiny and bouncy. It has a thick and rich look to it and my hair has grown. I meant to do this review 3 weeks ago when I went to her but it slipped my mind until I realized I have an appointment with her tomorrow. hello every one I want to thank Vonzen (but he told me Von is Good) for getting me looking like a human being again. For years I have been going to Wisconsin Ave. for quality cuts and hair care but this has always been a huge pain as I live near Silver Spring on Georgia Ave. my hair is NOT easy to cut so that it grows out looking good because I have a lot of cow licks (random curls) and worse, it has started to thin a bit in the past couple of years ... I found Chique studio purely by chance one day while doing field work for one of my clients. that is how I meet Ngina. The Owner of Chique Studios, (located at (3013 Georga Ave) just up the hill from Howard U.. After speaking for a bit I was impressed with her views and skills as much as the shop it self, which is very clean and well equipped. she invited me to come back for a shape up and I was delighted. the following day I met Von who did my cut and shape up which was in all honesty the best barber experience I have had in the last five or more years and the price WAS very reasonable. It has been two weeks since then and my hair still looks Good (and i get more than a few complements :) Good looking out Von I hope the clients pour in . One thing I HATE to do is talk down on a black business! HOWEVER! I booked an appointment and the only opening they had was with the business owner her self. I called prior to booking the appointment for a ponytail for my birthday. My appointment was at 8am. They didn't even touch my head until 10. I already told the boss I had an even to go to at 1pm. So, I finally sat in her chair around 11:30!! Yall I was so upset. I showed her a picture of what I wanted. She told me I had to be patient with her because she didn't know how to do a side part! So at this point, she was playing in my head. So I ended up leaving and was charged 176$!! And when I asked for a refund she told me no because I didn't give her the opportunity to fix it !! The energy was off! The whole appointment she was on the phone, making calls, and texting trying to get things fixed. The fire alarm kept going off nonstop. Vents wasn't working. Everything was so unprofessional. I'll be making a TikTok video to my 10k followers and will drop the address of the new location. Since this was my birthday event, I was recording and had everything on camera. This review is long overdue but here goes! My past several experiences at Studio Chique have been nothing short of excellent. I have natural, tightly coiled and kinky hair. I have had my hair silk pressed and flexi-rodded at this salon on different occasions. From start to finish the process for both services was seamless. The reviews I'm seeing about heat damage are unfortunate but truly not a part of my experience. My hair still most definitely maintains my curl pattern and because I decided to invest in the health of my hair by taking up the salon's offer of a luxury Protein/Hydration treatment(something I get each time I have heat applied to my hair at this salon), my hair has flourished and even increased in length(seriously!). I will admit that I take the health of my hair seriously so I know it is strong enough to take heat and physical manipulation before I go to the salon. It still stands though that Studio Chique takes pride in the health of the hair of their clients and feels it their responsibility to educate their clients on hair health whenever possible. Disappointed with their lack of concern for work where the stylist missed the mark. I had a install with a custom closure done and had problems from the start, closure color was off, braids were showing in the front and lace was not fitted properly. I went back to repair that and not even a week later had issues again to include the lace an the closure being practically off with the exception of a few strong threads, other tracks throughout where also completely loosened. Made an appointment to repair again and was treated questionable by the stylist with no remorse for a bad job. Ultimately, I removed it on the second repair semi appointment (was told I had to wait for an unknown amount of time) time and was charged for the removal and wash...80 plus dollars not including the initial 450 paid for the install to begin with. I'd recommend trying some where else. Sadly, I've gone here in the past to a stylist who left and she was amazing, also massage work, both experiences were great. Ngina is awesome, let me just start off by saying that. I've been her client since 2006 and always leave the shop which is now her shop ( STUDIO CHIQUE) satisfied. Im extremely picky when it comes to my hair; the only people who are authorized to even touch my hair are ngina and myself. Ngina has transformed my look on multiple occasions and i just can't say enough about her. Her mission is for her clients to obtain healthy beautiful hair and that's exactly what you receive. The level of service is great as well and I would know being in the hospitality business. The shop itself is warm and inviting and so is Ngina. I have been going to this salon for a little over five years and the service continues to get better and better. I am a client who usually gets weaves installed and they are done beautifully each time. I am serviced by the owner Ngina Thomas and she has done wonders for my hair over the years. When I first started going I had hair right below my ear and was a relaxed client. I began transitioning with weaves in 2012 with no "big chop" and my hair is shoulder length in its natural state. Booked with Aloni and it was everything I hoped for! It was my first visit and I asked for a silk press and BABYYYYY the way my hair moves!!!!!!! I ended up getting a trim with my service and we made a plan to treat my hair. I've been to a few salons in the area but I think I'll stick with Salon Chique and Aloni!
