Had an amazing experience for both of my daughters. As a mom, I'm always worried when my girls go to a new salon. But Candace, Raven and Tamia made sure my girls hair was healthy, beautiful and age appropriate. They received a shampoo, deep conditioning treatment, trim and blowout. Candace finished the style with 2 cute and curly ponytails. We were in and out in about 2 hours and my girls loved their hair. I recently decided it was time for a new look and turned to Studio Chique to help me take my almost black hair to a short blonde ombre bob with the help of Ngina. During my visit the salon was clean and relaxing, the staff was professional, my service started on time and the salon assistants were always on hand to keep my visit moving while Ngina helped other clients (I came on a very busy day). I left the salon happy with my style and color. Two days later after washing it I noticed some issues with the color (the hair didn't lift to the color I hoped). I emailed the salon and in less than a few hours Ngina not only responded but scheduled me to come back to the salon to correct the color. While the original color was wearable and professionally done, Ngina was totally focused on giving me exactly the shade of blonde I envisioned- SAFELY. Ngina understood I wasn't knowledgable of how fickle going blonde can be, but she didn't hold it against me and answered all 3k of my questions in a way a non-pro could understand. Needless to say I am impressed with the salon overall but what really earned my loyalty was their customer care. Their focus doesn't stop at executing a service "correctly" but in truly making their clients happy! I actually come here very often and never have a problem. However today was the first day I ran into an issue. Thanksgiving holiday has just passed and they were closed and their voicemail system explained they would only be closed Thursday until Sunday. I booked an online appointment for today ( Monday) and get to the salon and it was not open. I even called a couple of times and got only the voicemail. I am highly disappointed none of the staff has checked or reached out to customers who have booked online appts for this Monday especially if you would not be open though which was not advertised on the voicemail or website. I really don't see why they weren't open because Cyber Monday is not a recognized holiday. I spent my entire morning looking for a hair stylist and was even discriminated against because the only salons open in the area were Hispanic and they "couldn't handle" my hair texture. There are only few salons that provide quality and comfort for Black women, and it's always a shame when they disappoint you. read more

I used to go here routinely until my stylist moved on (I still see her). I have had pretty much all good experiences in the years I went here. The services that I would get are massages or facials (can't recall which one), wash-blow dry-flat iron (naturally curly hair), and cut. I have never had them do any chemical processes (color, relaxer, etc). The receptionist was always friendly. The owner has good customer service. The one time I needed to talk to her she was really nice about it and I appreciated her being approachable, giving good advice, and her offer to make me happy. Its definitely a fun, lively, and casual atmosphere. It's not formal or stuffy. Its clear the owner takes a lot of pride in her business and tries to ensure you have a great experience. Its not perfect, for example my stylist was often running late (not Studio Chique's fault and she's not there anymore anyways) and as others have said they don't use all the best practices for natural hair care, but I would definitely return and recommend to others. Most disappointing facial I've ever received. Tynisha has real control issues. She really does not want to hear a word of what you have to say, she is always right about you and your skin. She does not make eye contact. She is a facial-nazi. She asks what your concerns are but then fails to address them. She is only looking to up-charge you the entire time you are there. My advice would be for her to go on assignment to the Red Door, receive a facial, and do some major homework. read more

First let me start by saying that Ngina did my hair one week ago. I called and emailed her twice before she got in contact with me. That should have been a warning sign but my current stylist was booked and I was having my yearbook senior pictures taken and I wanted to look nice. And the fact that she had several five star ratings I assumed that she was the best of the best! My appointment was scheduled on a Friday for 1:00pm. The salon was nice and clean. I arrived at the hair salon at 12:30pm. Ngina's stylist greeted me. I sat down and waited and waited and waited. I had to get up and introduce myself to Ngina. When I went over to her booth to introduce myself. When I introduced myself she was working on two people at the same time (one of the persons was getting a weave and the other young lady was natural). Ngina was only half way done with weaving the first young lady and the second young lady had barely been worked on. The assistant had washed and conditioned her hair. It wasn't until 1:30pm that I got sat at the wash bowl to get my hair washed and conditioned. While I was getting my hair washed a few other young ladies came in and were waiting on Ngina and were frustrated at her overbooking them as well. I was pissed because I also had to get my make up done also. Her assistant however was pleasant, gave me a good wash and conditioner and detangled my hair. Ngina was frazzled and rushed to do my hair by the time I got into her chair. She asked me what I did to my hair since I was natural. I replied that I washed my hair with sulfate free shampoo bars, used organic natural coconut oil (Ngina told me that coconut oil was too heavy for hair and left residue). I was shocked because everyone knows that coconut oil is natural and a light oil unlike petroleum which is heavy. Anyway she asked me the look I was going for I told her I wanted a feathery style with body. And now back to my actual hair, Ngina burned my hair in a couple of different spots, and my hair did not have any style or body to it. Two hours later my hair fell flat. While my hair was straight it lacked body, style and the feathery look I was expecting. In the end I paid $70 and I also tipped her and her assistant. I have never in this city (Washingtonian native) paid $70 for a lack luster hair style and a stylist that overbooked and rushed me out of her chair. I have paid $45 and had a better hair do than with Ngina. I'm sorry but my verdict is that I don't think that she is the stylist for me and my hair despite others reviews. If I am paying you $70 plus tip then I expect a stellar experience and not being overbooked with lack luster hair and burned hair in certain spots. read more

I have been meaning to post a review since my first massage from a Groupon with Marsha back in October of last year. I just had my fourth one with her this evening, and have been getting them monthly at this point. Marsha is a goddess. She is extremely personable, attentive, and damn good at her job. My massage sessions have turned into both a physically and emotionally therapeutic self-care time for me, and I can't recommend her enough. The staff as a whole are always friendly and the massage room is an oasis of calm and tranquility. Do yourself a favor and book some you-time. It is well worth it. I am very hesitant about massage parlors in general because I work in the realm of anti-human trafficking, but Studio Chique has earned my full confidence and thumbs up for great atmosphere and wonderful employees who are cared for and care about their clients. read more

I got my hair straightened here. Getting an appointment was easy, I located it pretty easily, I got there early and they still attended to me. The wash was a little rougher than I am used to but it didn't hurt or anything. The issue came when I was actually getting my hair straightened. My scalp was burned countless amounts of times, no matter how I angled my head to give leverage it was almost guaranteed my scalp was going to get burned. At first, she would blow it after, but after a certain amount of times, it was as if she accepted that she is just going to keep doing it or she was paying more attention to a movie playing. The next few days I felt bumps on my scalp, and I haven't had sores on my head in at least a decade, so it scared me a bit. When I washed my hair there were pieces, especially in the front, that just would not go back to its natural curl. I saw someone else got their hair fried too in a review. I don't know if it was just an off day or that's just how it is, but I can't go back there. read more

I actually took my 8th grade daughter to Ngina to have her hair pressed for her eighth grade dance. She typically wears her natural hair in twists so the press/curl was supposed to be a treat just for the dance. Although I had scheduled through the salon's automated system and received numerous automated reminders, Ngina had no record of our appointment when we arrived and we were intermittently squeezed behind those with recognized appointments. This process ultimately took more than 4 hours - for just a press. The most troublesome part of my visit was actually how they treated my daughter's natural hair. I am no stylist, but I do know that you do not take a head full of dry natural hair and attempt to detangle by raking it aggressively with a paddle brush (as opposed to separating into small segments and wetting to detangle). My daughter cried and as Ngina's assistant continued this awful process until she had succeeded at raking handfuls of my daughter's hair onto the floor. There was no regard for the real health and well-being of hair. The press was dry and without product to protect her hair. This experience was in June 2012 and in October, we are still dealing with the after-effects of our visit. I had previously twisted her hair to encourage the health of her hair for more than 2 years and one visit to Ngina resulted in irreversible damage and breakage to what was once a beautiful head of natural hair. My suggestion, if you really want to maintain healthy natural hair, go elsewhere. read more

I had a really positive experience with Ngina a few days ago. I am a natural, and have been natural for about 20 years (first locs and now my natural coils). I dislike traditional salons that we find in our African American community. I dislike the waiting time. I dread the way salons use dryers to pacify clients while other heads are being worked on. I dislike the gossip that often gets stuck in such a negative and degrading place. And most of all... I dislike the idea that you have to pretty much write off a good four hours of your life to get your hair done... And yet, despite my best attempts at doing my own hair or going to natural places that blessedly seem to have a different culture, I need to get to a salon to blow out my hair and trim my ends. I do this far less frequently than I should, and I often have the ragged ends to show for it. The last time I went to a salon to blow my hair out and trim my ends was spring time. I was looking for a more affordable option closer to my home, so I checked out Yelp and found Ngina. I called for an appointment and she returned my call a few days later. We scheduled an appointment for 10:30am on December 21st. I arrived to find a few other women sitting under dryers and one woman getting her hair washed. Whitney, Ngina's assistant, greeted me about five minutes after I arrived and let me know she would be with me. By 10:43 I was in the shampoo chair getting a nice scalp massage and wash. Then under the steamer for a deep conditioning treatment. Back to the bowl to rinse out conditioner and then under the dryer for a bit. Whitney blew me out a bit before I was in Ngina's chair, where she worked her magic. I appreciated that I was always in motion and attended to. I was a bit worried because there were a few other sisters also waiting for Ngina, and I had assumed, based on past experiences elsewhere, I would be neglected. That was not at all the case. While Ngina did have other clients, she clearly knew how to keep everyone in motion. I was impressed. She knows what she's doing in terms of managing time and clients, and I had to chide myself for assuming that she wouldn't. She's very professional. And she knows what she is doing in the chair. She followed-up on Whitney's initial blow-out. I asked about her silkening pressing technique, and she asked me if I tend to get my hair pressed. I don't, but since I was trying to make the hair last until New Year's we decided to press. She also showed me my damaged ends and asked when was the last time I had them trimmed. At least six months ago I answered to which Ngina reminded me that I should be trimming my ends every 6 to 8 weeks or my damaged ends would "travel" and they did (they were on their way to my scalp). She showed me that in some parts we would need to take off about 2 inches to get the ends healthy. I told her that I rather have healthy hair than long hair, and that she should do what she needs to do. She said she has the same approach toward her hair health. I appreciate any stylist whose commitment is to hair health, and not merely the aesthetic. Though, the aesthetic was quite nice by the time I left her chair. I asked for some curls, to which she obliged. My hair has never looked so shiny and healthy with amazing movement. I ended walking out of the salon just shy of 1pm. Two and a half hours isn't bad. I'll take that. Ngina told me her goal is to get me out in two hours, but if a morning appointment is late, it pushes all of her later appointments back. I suspect this is what happened, but again, I was out in 2.5 hours and felt well attended to the entire time. The environment was quite nice. Whitney is bubbly and chatty, while Ngina is quietly pleasant. She isn't distracted by talk; rather, she is focused on the task at hand, her clients' heads. Ngina is my kind of stylist. She is gifted with the hands, cares about hair health, and is professional, striving to give her clients a good experience. This is my new go-to place. Fingers crossed that my second experience will be as pleasant as my first. If I can continue to have such a pleasant experience with Ngina, I might actually be able to maintain healthy ends by getting my hair done more regularly. I am super-pleased and have already shared her name with a few of my natural sisters as well as a few of my processed sisters. Gold star for Ngina. read more

I am highly disappointed in the experience that I had. Summary- DO NOT GET YOUR NAILS DONE HERE Horrible customer service Nails were incorrect Forced to pay anyway Would not recommend getting nails done Go to the nail salon down the street Although Tynisha's waxes are amazing and she has a way of putting you at ease, it did not make up for the terrible nail experience that I endured. I should have known when I saw no UV sterilization of tools that I needed to go somewhere else, but I stayed despite my better judgement. I should have just saved my time and money and went to the "nail salon down the street" instead of this fake spa that serves water in Dixie cups and allows your technician, with a terrible attitude, to eat and drink out of those Dixie cups while performing your nail service. The nail technician Leslie, spent over an hour and a half putting a full set on my nails. I endured her manually filling because she "left her drill at home". She then picked a nail color out for me based on a picture that I showed her. The color looked more pink than I would have liked it especially considering I told her that I was looking for a more natural color. She then proceeded to apply the color anyway and told me that the color may change a little. I still voiced my concerns that it was too pink. Since I was going for a glitter ombre effect, she told me that it may look better once the glitter was applied. It looked no better. I asked if I could have the color changed, not only did they want to charge me extra, they wanted me to come back on another day which I could not do. So they said, "You might as well just go down the street to that nail salon. We are not a nail salon we are a spa. We only have one technician and it is time for her to go," in the most arrogant and unwelcoming manner. After being this rude, they still forced me to pay. I feel that as a business, if something is wrong you should try to fix it. They kept citing time as a reason for not being able to fix it however, the "nail salon" down the street fixed it in about 30 minutes. Maybe if she had brought the proper tools to work with her, she could have done the same. It is also important to note that the nails were lumpy and uneven which the "nail salon" had to fix before they repainted them a more neutral color. I then called to ask for a manager, which was apparently the rude receptionist that had entered the conversation the day before. When I asked to talk to the owner she started yelling at me over the phone and then gave me an email address that goes to her and not the owner. Customer service was terrible and I do not see myself visiting Leslie again. UPDATE (response to Owner's comment): Good evening, I am not sure where the idea that 3 coats were cured. Only 2 were cured because when I mentioned that I did not like the color, she said that it would look better with glitter and I trusted what she said because she is a professional so I thought that she knew what she was talking about. When she went to put on the glitter and I noticed that nothing had changed, that's when the real issue arose about it being taken off of my nails. As far as not using a drill is concerned, I find it very convenient that this is mentioned after my email because when I was in the shop Leslie stated that she "had left her drill at home" that day. If drilling is not the method that she prefers, she could have very well stated that. There were no customers coming in after me. Leslie was just in a rush to go home. That is all she kept saying was that it was time for her to go home. If another customer had been waiting, that's one thing but to have a customer leave completely unsatisfied because you are ready to come home as a result of you not telling the complete truth about how a nail look would turn out is completely unacceptable. The attempt to remedy the situation did not work for another day. They said that I needed to come another day not later the same day and that was the issue seeing that my nails were not correct and I had a pageant the following day. Is there someone else that could do my nails aside from Leslie because I do not want to be serviced by her again? If there are no more technicians, can I receive my payment back instead of an offer to come back another day? I would much rather deal with someone else than to have to deal with her attitude again. I originally found out about this salon through a "Youtuber". He color looked amazing so I decided to check out yelp and see what others had to say. After reading some of your comments I was a bit hesitant to book an appointment but decided to do so with Ngina. I'm glad I did! First off, everyone in the salon is very friendly and professional. Maybe some of you guys just caught them on a bad day or either they've taken your comments into consideration and made some changes. I only had to pronounce my name once and everyone seemed to remember it so big kudos for that! Most importantly though, my appointment with Ngina started on time. I was there to get color and a silk press. She explained the process and even gave me suggestions as to what she thought I should do based on the information I gave her. That was greatly appreciated and at that point I knew I was in the hands of someone who truly knows about hair. I was in and out in about 3 hours...mind you I have natural hair and got color, a steam treatment, then trim and press. Overall, I am very happy with the results and the price was very reasonable compared to other salons in the DMV ($160). I only gave 4 stars though as this was my first time visiting the salon. A friend told me about this place. I easily booked an appointment on-line and was able to get a Saturday appointment. I got to the shampoo bowl almost immediately after arriving. After a quick wash and deep treatment, I was in Candice's chair. I had pretty low expectations- my hair is a weird shape and length (courtesy of another unnamed crappy salon) but Candice did a great job! She straightened it with a hot comb (old school but it worked) and a flat iron. My husband, who pretty much hates my hair at this length, even complimented me. I'll definitely be back. read more

I purchased a deal from Groupon for a Brazilian wax so I called to set an appointment but I happened to get to the place few minutes later than the stated time so the receptionist explained to me that I had to pay $15 late fee in order for me to use the deal from groupon, which I find very ridiculous, according to her it is part of their policy. I think it's ridiculous, they're just stealing money from people through groupon. They're not willing to do the service for the price on groupon, they're going to find a way to charge the customer more. Although I lost my money and time, I'm so glad I didn't get waxed there, place doesn't look quite clean and has a ghetto vibe. Being black doesn't mean being ghetto! read more

Although all the stylist came up, Ms. Candice stuck out to me. I haven't been to a salon for a trim or anything in over a year and a half. I'm new to the area and I went on this site to find a salon for my hair. I'm very picky and wanted someone who knew hair really well. I called yesterday and got in this morning to get my hair done. Then when I got in, I was greeted and checked in. They gave me to Octavia. She was very personable and understanding. We laugh and talked and I really got to know her. She really did an outstanding job on the hair. But not only that they are all very friendly. The barber Terry did my eyebrows and it was awesome. The young lady who checked me in "Whitney" was just sweet and fun. Whitney showed me the rest of the salon because I wanted to get my nails done and she showed me the place. I AM IN LOVE. One stop shop for me, my husband, and my son. I can get all my needs met in this one place and they are wonderful people to get to know. I went to Chique for a 60 min massage with a Groupon coupon in hand. They asked me to fill out a form and, at the bottom of it, the form informed me that I must consent to the Chique's cameras in the massage place. I did not consent. I do not like to be filmed naked. They refused to turn off the cams. No massage. The owner told me this is her business and she will do whatever she wants to protect it, even purposefully violate the privacy of her customers. This is a violation of our basic Constitutional right to privacy! I also wonder how they use the "naked" recordings." The owner claimed that the filming is for protection. After my normal stylist flaked on me, I was in a bind to get my hair done immediately for an out of town wedding. I googled "Natural hair salons in dc" and Salon Chique came up. I am not very open to trying new hair stylist esp when I'm getting my hair done for a special occasion, but considering I was in a bind I had no choice. I called and informed the receptionist of my dilemma. She told me they start early on Saturday's and to come right in and I would taken care of. Upon arriving I waited no more than 10 minutes before being washed. It seemed like there was a good amount of people in the shop, but the stylist move at a decent pace and work hard on getting the client in and out while giving the client exactly what they want. I was out of the salon 2 hours after arriving. Candice styled my hair, and I was happy with the results. She did an amazing job! O...M...G! This place is amazing. After finding it on Yelp and other internet searches, I was booked for a full sew-in with Candice. My first experience years ago was horrible, so I was very nervous and very stressed about going to a new salon. I was concerned whether they could deliver. Upon arrival, I was greeted by a kind receptionist, who politely confirmed my appointment and answered my questions. Next, came Ashley. OMG...this woman gave me LIFE. The way she washed my hair, I could have left the salon like that and would have been completely satisfied. Then I met my stylist, Candice, who greeted me and listened to my concerns and preferences for my hair. She understood and not once made me feel uncomfortable. She looked over my head and consulted with Ashley on the braid pattern. I could tell the goal was maintenance and to promote growth. Anywho, due to my current breakage situation, I assumed half of my hair would be left. But apparently Ashley's hands are made with magic! She was able to get all my hair without PULLING *gasp*. (SN: Oh and they both reminded me to speak up if at any time it hurt). Next it was on to Candice for the sew-in, she worked quickly and was delicate with my hair all while being welcoming. Often including me in conversation between her and the other team members. (Special shout out to D'shawn (sp? sorry) who kept me laughing the entire time!). It was evident that the team liked each other and were a family. When it was time for the reveal, Candice spun me around and my jaw dropped! I'm 31 and have never worn my hair long and straight because I didn't think it fit my face. That thought went out the window the moment I saw my hair. I will definitely go back! I went to Ngina to get color on my natural hair. She was great. Very knowledgeable and friendly. She is the first stylist I have ever been to who actually listened to what I wanted and took the steps to get me there. What I asked for will take 2 visits due to previous color and she explained that as well. I paid more than I expected.. but it was due to the number of processes I had to have to achieve the color I wanted. With that said you get what you pay for. Everyone in this cute salon was friendly and I enjoyed the visit... I will continue to go to her for all my color needs. read more

This spa had a wonderfully welcoming and kind staff! I loved my visit and the massage I received. I'm traveling for the next few weeks but upon my return, I will return to Studio Chique.
