I'm sorry I'm not famous! Ok not really. But this place... man. First, made an appt. and then got a call from the office, trying to bump my spot because some women from France were coming for color contacts. Lovely. I was given 2 weeks worth of dailies to try, and they told me to just go ahead and order a year's worth. And charged me $400. Then, when I called back the next day and said the contacts were uncomfortable, they told me there was absolutely no refunds. Thanks. So since I had all that credit, here I am, one year later. I avoided them as much as possible - had my exam elsewhere... and I emailed to order some contacts. No response for 3 days. I called and asked about it and I got a "we'll call you right back." My wife and I went to Studio Optix to get two new pairs of glasses, and told the staff at Studio Optix exactly how much our insurance company was going to cover for each of us. They agreed, called our insurance company to verify the amount, then billed us for the remainder (which was high, but we paid it on the spot). Later we did some comparison shopping and realized we had paid too much at Studio Optix, but that was our own fault for not shopping around first. Months later, they began billing us for an additional amount. I made numerous calls to Studio Optix and my insurance company to find out why we were being billed again. Studio Optix claimed that the insurance company didn't pay the full amount, but when I requested the records from the insurance company I realized Studio Optix had billed more than the covered amount that we had agreed on in their office. In other words, Studio Optix apparently overcharged the insurance company and then sent us the bill when the insurance company refused to pay the additional amount. I maintained that this was an error on their part; we and the insurance company had clearly communicated our coverage to them and if there was an additional charge, they should have told us about this extra charge up front. They repeatedly told me that I didn't understand, that wasn't the way insurance worked. Meanwhile the insurance company explained the situation clearly and sent me all the records I needed. We were covered for $X, and Studio Optix billed them for $X+Y, so they rejected $Y of the total. In the end, a year and a half after visiting their office, Studio Optix threatened to send the bill to collections and I paid them off rather than have to deal with a collection agency. I won't be back, I'd recommend you stay away too. Update: after I posted the above, a manager from Studio Optix responded with an attempt to discredit my story (though I have the insurance paperwork as evidence). This is unfortunately typical of the problem resolution I experienced back in 2006-2007 when it first happened--rather than admit a mistake and try to fix it, they went on the offensive, trying to lay the blame on me and threatening me. It seems that even with new staff, things have not changed much there. read more

Came here because it's close to work and it was recommended by my co-workers, who just happen to be high six-figure earning attorneys. I shoulda taken that as a hint for what to expect at this tony shop that is as small as it is expensive. I wasn't even shown a frame that cost less than $300. Additionally, they tried to upsell me on EVERYTHING, from optional eye exams that my insurance didn't cover to some kind of lens insurance program, to fancy coatings and so forth. The "assistants" choose eyewear for you to try on; I was given some funky stares when I approached the cases to look myself. The optometrist, I guess he's Dr. Mitch based on the other reviews here, was courteous enough, although he tried to upsell me on a potential hereditary condition I MIGHT develop 30+ years down the road. Look, if your expensive frames still aren't leaving you much breathing room in that tight overhead for primo real estate in Rock Center, chill a little on the upsell with your clients! Definitely avoid if you can. Service is awful and not worth going to. I stopped by here to pick up some contacts. I waited 15 minutes for someone to become available to put an order in. When someone finally was free, though there seemed to be a lot of chatting occurring regardless of customers, the associate barely greeted me. Silent throughout the entire interaction, she would not even answer my questions. When I asked about my insurance coverage, she condescended to tell me that she knew it better than I did. I remained friendly, as it is entertaining to watch when someone thinks they're smarter than me, attempts to prove it and then fails. After going into a long example about kertaonisis(sp?), I left to check with my insurance and call to place an order. Note that in the store, I was able to use my entire 150 allowance- this will be key later. I called back to the store 30 mins later to place my order and she didn't have the prescription and said I would have to come in. After saying I did not want to walk back and would find somewhere else, she magically found the RX. After 2 more explanations of kera-whatever when I attempted to explain my insurance coverage, I finally was able to tell her how many boxes I needed. Lo and behold, the allowance had been reduced to 127 instead of 150. $23 isn't a lot but the shadiness combined with the rude patronizing attitude made me decide to go elsewhere. I realize you're near Rockefeller Center and deal with a lot of tourists but customer service does go a long way. No thanks Studio Optix, not worth your crap even to be able to see! UPDATED10/14/2013- Manager called this afternoon to convince me I was wrong and "talk about the complaints" (ie retract my review). When I laid out my issues with the service and the ultimately misleading information, he proceeded to tell me my perceptions were wrong and that the associate has never told me that. I have to agree with the upselling issue going on at Studio Optix. I had an issue with my eyesight, made a first time appointment and was misdiagnosed, which is understandable. She prescribed me anti inflammatory drops since she thought I had an infection. The original prescription was $143. I almost paid it, but decided to go back and see if there was a generic. Surprise! There was a generic brand of drops that cost me $10. It was kind of a hassle to go back and forth between the pharmacy and the doctor's office. I know the doctor doesn't receive any profit from prescribing non-generic brands, but why not at least ask me which I prefer? It ended up not being the correct treatment anyway and I ended up going back three times, finally finding out that I just had to moisturize my eyes more regularly. Also, she took photos of my eyes to show me and didn't tell me it would be an extra cost. Again, it wasn't a significant amount of money, but I would have liked the option to decline the extra service since it was an additional fee. They're probably used to very well off patients/clients, since it's a fancy store, but some of us are just there for the convenient location. Can't completely rule them out though, since the other doctor (that I didn't see) was recommended to me. PS: After browsing this Yelp page, it kind of seems like Studio Optix's responses are not super apologetic? It seems like every patient complaint is responded to in a very defensive manner. I had known that I needed glasses, and had been looking for an optometrist who takes my insurance and has the eyewear I want in Ohio where I live. On a whim I stopped into Studio Optix with my kids to window shop when we were in NYC. Within minutes, I'm talking to Adam and they take my insurance. 10 minutes later I've completed my first eye exam in years--without having my eyes dilated. After a short consultation with Dr. Cassel, I pick out frames with Adam, and Dr. Cassel checked my kids eyes. I left with a prescription for glasses and bought a pair of frames. Yesterday I got my frames and I absolutely love them. They're my first pair of glasses so it felt like a big decision. Everyone I dealt with was friendly, knowledgeable professional. I've been going here for a few years. Dr. Mitch is great - he's fast and efficient. They have a good selection on frames - tons of styles. The office is very small and crammed though, I think they should upgrade. You literally step in the front door and practically have your eye exam! Nice team but had a very annoying experience today with an insurance issue. The amount of up selling they tried to do was beyond annoying. I went in knowing the exact pair of glasses i wanted (EyeBobs brand) and how much my insurance would cover. Since the glasses happened to be a cheaper pair, and i have decent eye insurance, my out of pocket costs would have been $0. They refused to sell me the glasses using my insurance because of that. I had to call the insurance company, and they had to call the store to tell them that they are required under law of their insurance contract to sell me any glasses in the store regardless of my out of pocket cost. However, instead of giving them my business at all, i walked down the block to LensCrafters where they were more than happy to assist me! read more

I have gone to Studio Optix a few times for checkups but will not be going back. I recently went in because I had a pain in my eyelid. I first saw Dr. Mitch Cassel who said I had a stye in my eye and needed a steroid cream and special eyedrops. I never had one before so did not know what to expect. $30 copay for the visit; $60 for prescriptions - anything to make my eye better. After a couple days of using the prescriptions, my eye was feeling worse than ever. It still had the stye but was now also bright red and irritated. I scheduled another visit, paid my $30 copay and saw another younger doctor. She told me she was not sure why my eye was red but said I should continue to use the prescriptions and it will get better. Fine. As the days went on, my eye was not getting better. I visited a third time, paid my $30 dollar copay, and saw an older female doctor who said I am probably allergic to the prescriptions. She went on to tell me that there is no real need for prescriptions if you have a stye. Just compress the eye with a hot moist towel a couple times a day and it will go away. I told her I wished someone told me that before I spent over $100 in eye care...she just laughed. After just leaving my eye alone, the redness and the stye went away. So in total, I spent $150 at Studio Optix to be told in the end to not do anything to my eye...even though the problems I was having were because of them. I guess they have great relationships with the pharmaceutical companies! read more

Short review: Inaccurate prescriptions for contact lens exam on 2 separate visits left me with resorting to wearing my eyeglasses for 3 months until I went to a different eye doctor elsewhere that knew what they were doing. Based on these 2 experiences, I will not return and cannot recommend this place to anyone. Even with health insurance, I was charged an additional $150 just for contact lens fitting. Outrageous. Long review: Majority of the staff here are quite nice and courteous, except for the front desk which seem to be a hit or miss. Some of them will ignore you or give you a cold shoulder for no reason. They seem to be more focused on gossiping between each other than taking care of customers walking in. Note, I'm not walking in dressed like a bum - I there both times during my lunch break wearing a suit and tie for work. The equipment they use looks like new state of the art stuff I haven't seen other places have. The optometrist was always pleasant and professional. However, I was prescribed lenses that failed to focus after the 2nd day of wear. I went back for a 2nd visit after a month to rectify the situation. I was given a different pair of trial lenses but they had the same problem. Ultimately, I left wondering if there's now something wrong with my eyes that it can no longer wear contact lenses. Fast forwarding a few months, I went to another eye doctor closer to my home and they found out I have an astigmatism in my left eye within 15 minutes and gave me the correct prescription. Why wasn't this something Studio Optix picked up the 2 times I was there? I now question their credentials and definitely will never return. As mentioned, Studio Optix charged me $150 just for contact lens fitting even with a health care plan. Meanwhile, the other eye center that diagnosed me correctly did not charge me anything and gave me 2 months worth of trial lens. I see the Studio Optix has a fair amount of business coming in so perhaps my situation is a rare case. I'm posting this so that others are aware. read more

The staff here was unpleasant, and their main concern seemed to be getting money out of me rather than helping me find a new pair of glasses. I really wanted to like this place. It's close to work, they seem to have a diverse range of eyeglasses, and even though it's a little pricey, I would have paid for service and convenience. However, the staff was sullen, snippity, completely uncharming... just, bad sales people. I left the store feeling determined to never return. Don't come here. Why bother when you can travel a little further and receive customer service? read more

Had my eyes checked for the first time in NYC. I picked Studio Optix based on the close vicinity to my job. There was maybe a 10 minute wait for my appointment but I was also a few minutes early. It was definitely busy at 1pm with lots of people dropping off glasses to be repaired and picking up prescriptions. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The doctor was great! She was very personable and went over the results of my eye exam in detail. We also chatted a little bit about my job and home life. She was just genuinely kind. A very nice woman helped me pick out my frames and within an hour I was on my way back to work. They have a very nice selection of frames. I would recommend to everyone. read more

Would warn anyone against going here. Only went here because I work in 30 Rock and they're right in the building. Terrible mistake. I ordered a pair of frames and later found out the salesperson charged me to do lenses in-house even though my insurance would have covered it. After lot of back and forth with them, Studio Optix finally agreed to let insurance pay for it. It was very hard to get the receptionist, Erika, to give me an update on when the payments would go through or when I could expect my frames. I couldn't get them to return my calls (had to call over 3x to get some answers). I even asked to speak to the business manager and was told she would call me back and she never did. Very frustrating process. Getting these frames was a nightmare. They should provide better customer service after charging so much for the frames. Everyone here is soo nice. I've seen Dr Butler and Dr Klibanoff and both of them were so sweet and helpful. They explained exactly what my insurance covered and didn't cover so there were no surprises. I needed new glasses this year and the girl helping me really gave me her honest opinion which I appreciated, since it was hard for me to choose between a few frames. The hours are also convenient so I could stop in on my way home from work and be out in under and hour. They also offer an extra test for cancers and such if you would like. They didn't push it on me and I didn't feel like I needed it but it's nice that they offer it if you are concerned with your eye health. This is the best luck I've had with setting up doctors since I moved to the city and it's exactly how a doctors office should operate. read more

Realizing that I hadn't had an eye exam in 2 years, my co-worker recommended that I go to Studio Optix, located 1 block from our office. I called and was offered an appointment the following Monday during my lunch break. When I arrived I was asked to answer a few questions on an iPad (contact info, medical history, etc.) The place was packed when I first arrived around 12:30 but dwindled down closer to 1. I was there for about an hour start to finish- longer than I anticipated but they were pretty busy. Now, I don't wear glasses/contacts so I can't speak about product pricing. Did they try to "upsell" me with a alternative exam that my insurance didn't cover?- yes. Did I feel pressured/uncomfortable when I simply checked 'no'?- no. The staff and doctor were very friendly. The doctor was very efficient, made me feel comfortable and answered any questions I had. If I still work in the area when my next eye exam is due, I wouldn't mind going back (just not on my lunch break, because I was anxious with time). read more

Had my first eye exam in years here at Studio Optix and couldn't be happier with my experience. All the staff are incredibly welcoming, kind and professional. The doctor was very friendly and gave a very detailed analysis of the test results. I felt very safe because of all the COVID precautions they take and the studio and offices are immaculate. The inventory of glasses and sunglasses is incredible. They have everything you could want, ranging from the very simple to really cool statement pieces. Had my first exam this past weekend and the staff was wonderful!! I tried out Studio Optix for the first time and noticed how quick and easy everything went. Eralda who did the medical testing was wonderful and made me feel comfortable throughout the whole testing process. She was gentle and informative before I began each test. The machinery was definitely more high tech and better than previous ones i've been tested on in the past. I was seen by Dr. Butler who had tremendous patience with me as I struggled to find the right contact lenses for my eyes. I appreciated his work ethic and would recommend anyone to see Dr. Butler. I also needed new frames and lenses as I use the computer everyday for work and sat down with Mike to choose frames and go over any questions I had. Mike was amazing as he chose many different frames to suit both my face and my liking. He allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and we chose frames that were suitable for my complexion which I fell in love with. The process throughout the time I was scheduled was super quick which I appreciated since I was in a rush. Since it has been almost 3 years since I'm last review, I thought I'd post an update to say Dr. Cassel continues to rock. He is a really good doctor and genuinely concerned about your health. He was a little upset with me for leaving my contacts in too long. "You only have one pair of eyes" he told me. He has a great sense of humor and was joking with me about needing to change my contacts more often. He also did a special test on my eyes to check their health, since he was concerned...but my eyes are super healthy! HOORAY I was also pleased to discover that their pricing for contacts was way less expensive than 1-800-CONTACTS. WAY.LESS.EXPENSIVE and I got hooked up with what seems to be enough saline solution to last for the rest of my life. I don't understand the hater posts. He's a great doctor and my husband and I are glad we found him. Plus, after you are done getting a check-up you can go shopping in rock center. :) read more

The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, their equipment is state of the art, and the best part - their prices are very competitive! Amazing. I returned three pairs of progressive glasses that didn't work for me. This was my first time with progressive and thought I had to give up. I was reluctant to try another place but the shifting of glasses was getting too much. Finally a pair I can use almost all the time. I still have issues with my computer screens but I don't mind switching when I get to the office. The nuisance came when I had to read something on my phone or see a street sign. Even looking at the gps in my car. Now all has been resolved. Thank you SO. read more

Didn't have a great experience here...found the staff are rude and they constantly attempt to upsell you like a bad waiter at TGI Fridays (at least Fridays would be friendly about it, but I digress.) I went for a basic eye exam (I wear contacts) and felt like they spent more time talking about my insurance than my eyes. Managed to hit me with a $125 fee for a contact lens fitting even though insurance said it was supposed to be $40. Once the Doctor's assistant figured out I wasn't going to buy contacts or glasses from them right away she was clear to show her irritation and basically quit speaking to me (she was wearing terrible glasses herself, which didn't help her sales pitch). She then complained to the Doctor, who pulled me aside for a lecture on how "professional" his staff is. I've had better experiences at used car lots. UPDATE: An employee from Studio Optix responded to my review below, but he seems to think the contact lens fitting fee was the most offensive part of my visit there. Clearly from the other reviews below I am not the first person to be treated rudely here; I rather wish they paid the same attention to customer service that they do to Yelp reviews. I heard several times during my visit how "discount" my eye insurance coverage is; since I can't exactly change it on the spot, I fail to see how this helps anything. If it matters, I had zero issues with Dr Cassel, and his insistence that I change my contacts more often or switch to dailies I'm sure is sound medical advice. But I shouldn't be treated rudely either for taking some time to decide if I want to switch contacts or not. Oh well, it is New York, the expression isn't "If you want a friend, get an eye doctor" for a reason. read more

So these days it is no shock that people with decent insurance coverage get screwed over by medical practices. I have seen it far too often since moving to NYC 3 years ago. I have never in my 20 years of wearing contacts had to pay a separate contact eye exam fee, and if I had I would have been notified in advance. I called to schedule my eye exam and specified that it was needed for contacts. I provided my insurance info over the phone and asked if it would be covered, and was told I would only be responsible for the $20 copay and any contacts that would be ordered. Not the case... Contact Lens Evaluation - $175.00. Just be warned that they do not explain any charges prior to having you sit with someone at the end of your exam and jot down charges for you. I've been seeing Dr. Cassel for years now and he is always at the top of his game. He is very professional and personable. If I ever needed anything, all I have to do is call or just walk in. The staff there is very welcoming and friendly. I usually work with Morgan after my eye exam because he knows the type of frames I like and for their location, things tend to be a little on the pricy side but I am okay with that. Their eye exams are very thorough for both vision and health (make sure you are not going to have a stock) reasons. From my exam this year, they have this new machine that will check the inside of your eyes without putting that liquid stuff in to dilate them. You have to love that about Studio Optix, they are keeping up with the times. So, when you leave Studio Optix after your exam, you can see. I couldn't have asked for such great optometrist and eye care facility in Studio Optix. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an eye exam or to purchase frames/contacts. read more

I love that Dr Cassel and Dr Rana will walk me through the results of the exam and the health of my eyes and vision.
