Luckily it felt like we came right before the rush- we made our way to the 12th floor, barely anyone at the bar, WITH LIVE MUSIC! The best part. We got the current / the romantic cocktail. Nice date night spot atop of the nicer hotel in Downtown Berkeley. The manager was lovely and handled a fire alarm scare like a pro, safely evacuating all staff and guests. Once the real alarm was investigated we returned to our same table and munched on bar bites and craft cocktails. One less star because the menu is somewhat limited. Not a full dinner despite having one of the best views in the east bay. Go to dinner elsewhere first and have your night cap here. read more

Stayed at the residence inn in Berkeley & come to find out there's this spot on the upper level! Always enjoy a nice rooftop spot. I ordered the truffle fries & a burger, didn't get a pic though i was too hungry lol but i did love the beer that the bartender recommended to me. Had a sweet taste to It! Finally got a chance to check out Study Hall Rooftop Lounge, that's located at the top of the Marriott hotel in downtown Berkeley. We were seated pretty quickly by the window and our server,Her name was Yuki. She was so nice and informative. She told us about the specials she also told us about different cocktails, different wine recommendations. She really catered to us and was so patient and answered all of our questions and all of her recommendations was on point!!! Food and Drinks!! We ended up getting the Wagyu tacos, the truffle fries and two glasses of wines. we really had a great time ! The band was not playing. It was after 6:30 so I'm not sure what time they started, but the weather was 70ish, so the vibes was there, Yuki was pleasant and she was very courteous which is rare. Thank you for helping a couple of newbies. The whole Rooftop area was clean even the restrooms were decent. It was noisy because there was a few graduates that came to celebrate, enough room for large parties. Definitely will be back and can't wait to try different items on their menu. Came here for drinks. We went to the bar, but the bar tops were disgusting, leftovers from the previous guest hadn't been cleaned. The bartenders weren't attentive and kept us waiting while they chatted with a server before taking our order. We also noticed that the way they made drinks for others didn't seem very sanitary. The outside rooftop area is nice, chilly, but they provide communal blankets and have heaters around the space. read more

If you're looking for a really snazzy place to get away from it all, the Study Hall Rooftop Lounge is the place. It's so close to UC Berkeley and located on the top of the Residence Inn, you can possible get a free view of UC Berkeley's soccer games. To get to the top, you either need to be a guest or access the general elevator that's specifically denoted in the elevator hall. The parking can be tricky if you're looking for street parking but I was able to land a spot across the street from the main entrance while my colleagues had to park a few blocks away. The calamari was delicious as were the drinks. The price is a bit high but it was worth it if you want to treat yourself to celebrate. The service was amazing and for a Friday night, we were able to enjoy a live band. If you're going to be there with a crowd, I'd suggest reserving a location on the patio. We were about 12 people and were perfectly comfortable with the outdoor sofas and fire pit. If it gets too cold, there's also a hidden compartment that houses blankets. But hey, if a location is roped off for an event, don't walk into the event just to take a view. Be courteous to others. read more

Study Hall is a hip rooftop lounge on top of the Residence Inn Hotel in Berkeley with great views of the downtown skyline and UC Berkeley campus. They've got a great cocktail, beer, and wine line-up, as well as some delicious food! Their entrees and bites have an Asian influence, including Japanese, Chinese, and Korean-inspired dishes. Before I go any further into this review, I MUST tell you about my all-time favorite thing on the menu--the Cauliflower Nuggets!!!!! Yes, they are five exclamation points worthy. They're that good! These deep-fried balls look a bit like arancini and are filled with cauliflower and cheese with a sticky sesame glaze on the outside. They are incredible, and I don't even like cauliflower that much! But they are a must-order when coming here! Even if you get one dish, GET THESE! For other apps, I also loved the Baja Style Fish Tacos. They have fried cod,, pickled red onions, guacamole, and pico de gallo in white corn tortillas. Calamari is also a solid choice. Crispy Fried Brussels Sprouts were good, but if you're choosing between these and the Cauliflower Nuggets, get get the Cauliflower! Their Study Hall Burger is quite popular! It's pretty sizable, as it includes two 5oz waygu beef patties, cheddar, all the fixings, and house secret sauce on a brioche bun. Very tasty and filling! Walked out. Came in there around 4:30 today, place is quiet, only four people at the bar and three tables with diners. Asked the bartender about the difference between the two Chardonnays. Without so much as looking up, he says, "two different wineries, I guess." Uhm, okay. So, we went ahead and ordered that and some tacos and asked for two glasses of water. He poured the chard for my wife and then went about doing nothing much at all. Three people at the bar, 10 minutes later, and I walked and asked, can I at least get the water. He says, I'm kind of busy right now. Okay, now I'm annoyed, but sit. Then asked the waitress, who's standing around doing nothing, could I get two glasses of water, not sure what's taking so long. "Not my section," she says. And he's busy. Again, he wasn't doing much of anything. Then I go to a guy and ask him if he's the bar manager. He says yes. I tell him the story. He barely looks up and say, 'he's a little behind.' Last straw, about 1 minute later, someone else comes up and asks the original bartender for a glass of water, and he reaches right under the counter and pours one for him. Took three seconds. I just looked at him and asked him why couldn't you do that for me. He says, without even looking up. "I was busy," and still doesn't pour us the water. That's when we left. Three people, none very busy, couldn't care less, and did nothing to rectify. No, 'hey, I'm so sorry,' nothing. These folks couldn't have cared less and shouldn't be working in the service industry. If you want to be treated with courtesy and elegance, which the prices in the place would suggest, I'd suggest you look elsewhere. read more

love this bar! Not only is the view great. It's such a vibe. The cocktails are a bit in the pricier Side but they're so worth it! Specially with the entertainment and energy that the bartenders give you. I got the honor to meet Isela and Angel for my very first experience and they're the reason I come back. Theyre not only are they tentative but they feed of each others energy. They're professional and goofy which is a great thing to have at a bar. The location beats all, the view of berkeley is beautiful and extra points if you arrive during sunset. You get a 360 view of berkeley and can even see oakland, sf, and the bridges which was beautiful. The service was ok, i think it might have been because we came on a busier day. When we arrived the place was not crowded at all but when we asked for a seat the hostess said she couldn't seat us at a table bc they will be filling up for reservations. We said we would be quick but she denied seating us and instead said we can go to the bar which we did. We checked online and saw plenty of reservations open so we made one for the next time slot for an inside table. When we went to the hostess a to be seated another woman working pushed for us to consider a table outside. When we finally agreed to go outside, another group was standing there requesting this spot and that they reserved this table outside.. at this point we were annoyed bc we initially requested inside but were asked to go outside yet another group already reserved that table? It was all very disorganized. We finally sat inside and mind you there were PLENTY of other tables still empty. We ordered couple apps which took a while. Meanwhile the entire time maybe 1 reservation came in. They could have easily given us a time limit on a table and we would've been gone before their so called flood of reservations. Recently had a group gathering here for my birthday. It was a beautiful outdoor setting with great views. The place was very accommodating as my reservation nearly doubled in size. They offered additional seating when available. Our host Grace was very kind. The waitress was stretched thin but did an awesome job. The only reason for four stars is the food quality was just ok. The food is basic and standard hotel food. Nothing stands out on the menu. Drinks were good and again all of this together made for a delightful visit to study hall. The pickled onions didn't taste much of onion or strong of pickle, the guac was green but lacked any salsa or citrus taste, the sour cream wasn't even sour--it was just white and creamy, and then the fish--well I guess it's good it didn't taste fishy, but it was just there. dumplings: pork and shrimp ordered. These are $2.5 each, and I was hoping they were like BIG or at least special. They were neither, though they were edible. Just really expensive for that. Drinks: expensive but nice. Diners with me had 2 x different mixed drinks and one beer. rice pudding with mango: this was good. I'd order this again. Bathroom grade: sorry I didn't get to the bathroom because we were headed to The Moth at Freight and Salvage (go. I already ate so I didn't get a chance to really try the menu outside of snacking on my friends Brussels so this review is solely on the vibes.... 9/10 I'm literally only taking away a point because it was cold outside and there weren't any heat lamps and the one fire pit was already taken but whatevs.... We sat inside. I love the set up of the bar and cannot wait to come back to watch a game or two. The customer service was also really good from the moment I walked into the Marriott. Very welcoming! Some girlfriends and I have been planning on coming here for the last few months. Finally our schedules aligned on this past holiday weekend. We got there a little after 7pm. It was slow, because of the holiday so not many people there. We were greeted by a nice young man when we walked in. We requested to be close to the glass partition to enjoy the view, but was told there weren't any seats in that area yet. At the same time another nice guy named Lemaar came out and offered to go double check for us. Very kind of him to go above and beyond. It went downhill from there. Our server Julia was not attentive at all. She was hard to find. You asked her for a straw, glass of water, another drink, take our order, etc., she would take forever to come back. When she finally did appear, it was to take an order from another table of people who'd been waiting a while to order. Then after catching a glance at our impatient faces, she'd remember to bring what we asked for. Mind you, the place was not busy at all. There was only a group of 6 occupied tables outside, 1 inside, and 2 people at the bar. There was 3 waitress staff members outside including Julia, and I am not sure what Lemaar's role was. The only tables left waiting for extended periods of time for customer service were hers. We had to flag down Lemaar to bring us our check after waiting over 30 minutes for her to return with it. She was a very sweet girl, but she will need a lot more training. The FOOD was horrible! The parmesan wings were flavorless and over cooked. The fish was bland and tasted freezer burned. The flat bread was probably the best thing on the menu and it wasn't even good. read more

The best thing here was the view we had on the roof top from a corner table that had comfy seating reminiscent of a "L" shaped living room sofa without the "L" that was really "I " shaped. They had glass walls on the roof. I only had a Trumer Pils and tacos. The tacos mainly consisted of a large prawn and other ingredients but that's it. The weather was extremely pleasant that night. As a majority of us were Cal alumni, it was refreshing to see that Berkeley now has a clean, spacious, and well lit rooftop restaurant and bar. The ambience here is well balance since inside seating offers a variety of options from a couch for big groups in the corner to regular dining tables to the bar as well as outside by fire pits. Service here was solid and despite our server being busy, she did the best she could to manage our large party. My boyfriend and I ordered the following: - Tipsy Tsunami = super freaking strong; it did what it came to do - Red Sangria = also strong, but heavy on the wine flavor! - Wagyu Burger = 10/10 SO GOOD. We both agreed this was our favorite! I loved how tender the meat was and how the cheese melted on it. - Margherita Pizza = Decent; it was burned on the crust so it was kind of a let down after waiting extra time since our order was initially forgotten. We were able to try some of the truffle fries our friends ordered as well, and enjoyed that it was crisp and not too oily! I definitely would come back again, especially for the wagyu burger! We tried this place out because I saw it on a few "best rooftop bars in the Bay" lists. Unfortunately that was probably because there are not very many rooftop bars in the East Bay to begin with. The views are overall nice, but it was very cold outside. They have firepits but no warmers, so we decided to sit inside. They were out of the Berkeley Bowl, which was what two out of four of us wanted to order. The drinks were mostly tequila or mezcal based, they only had one other cocktail with gin, and maybe one with whiskey (I don't remember). The food was alright, the nachos were loaded. I kept saying that this was the only plate of nachos I've had where there are too many toppings and not enough chips. At the end of the day, this is a regular hotel restaurant. The glassed walled rooftop patio is pretty great for the area. Glass walls make it feel more open, block some of the wind and improve the views better than railing. There was a semi-private event taking place and the few remaining tables were full, so we took a quick walk around to see the outdoor couches/seating and dined inside near the bar. The hosts were friendly and quick to get my group of 4 seated. It appears that they have a good selection of cocktails and a decent selection of beers. The server was quick to check on us but didn't know what was in their cocktail special, so we skipped it. This was my second time here with the first being an evening with a DJ, 3.5 stars then. 3 this second time. Going with a 4 since 3.5 isn't an option because they have the outdoor patio and their Brussel sprouts were quite tasty! If I return will be with a date for an evening when there is a DJ and we can be on the patio. Strike 1: When I arrived at the restaurant at 4:57 pm for my 5 pm reservation, the host asked me "do y'all wanna be seated now?" which was SUPER unprofessional in my opinion. not just how he asked but yes. She took our drink order and then we didn't see her again for another 20 minutes. Meanwhile, I'm watching the table who was sat AFTER us get their drinks & food before I ever got my first beverage. Strike 2.5: I had to flag down ANOTHER waitress to complain about being there 30 minutes without a drink. She said "Sunday's are just a bad day to come." like I didn't realize the service i get is dependent on the day i come? She then proceeded to get my order wrong. I ordered the garlic parmesan truffle fries, and i got regular. AND ITS SUPER HARD TO FIND MY WAITRESS OR ANY OTHER SERVICE STAFF FOR THAT MATTER. Strike 3: The food was absolutely garbage. The spinach artichoke dip was underseasoned, the wings were skimpy, and it took us ANOTHER 30 minutes to get a 2nd round of drinks. Won't be returning. So many better rooftops in the area. This place is definitely for people who haven't worked in the service industry and don't know the difference between good and bad service. I really wish I liked this place more. This is fairly new and at the top of the new hotel on center st. The concept is great...a rooftop lounge/bar super close to campus with great views. Here are the positives first: - the views can be great (but only from certain areas on the roof...I recommend trying to sit on the right when you walk in) - the truffle fries were super yummy! And my friend really liked their hamburger. I liked my grilled cheese but I felt like it could've been a bit cheesier. - the ambiance was nice and they had different seating options (fire pit, high top tables, couches, regular tables, etc.) but you have to request it ahead of time The negatives: - we were seated directly in the sun with the sun hitting our eyes the whole time. We asked to switch seats to the other side (which also had a nicer view) so we asked our waitress. She said that it should be fine and she would come back to let us know. She didn't come back and instead the hostess came to our table about 15 min later and said we couldn't sit there as it was reserved for another party. That's fine and I understand it was going to be used, but by the time we left, there was still no party sitting in the area we requested to move to. I felt like that could've easily been cleaned and prepped for the next party by the time we left... - the wait was a bit long and I felt there was very little communication among servers. We had our first server come over to ask for our drink orders but she didn't return for a while after giving us our drinks. Another server happened to pass by and asked if we needed anything so we decided to order our food. Then 10 min later our original server came to ask for our food order. Thought it was a bit odd that they didn't communicate. - the prices are a bit high if you are catering to students. I don't really know a student that would want to pay $20 for a burger alone (no fries or sides included!) - my friend tried to order the special which were nachos the day we went. When he asked what was included, they said there was no protein. He asked if he could add chicken to the nachos since they have an option on their menu to add grilled chicken to a salad. The waitress wrote it down and said she would ask the chef. She came back 5 min later and said we couldn't add chicken to the nachos and said adding anything new to the nachos isn't possible (didn't think that would be too difficult since adding Chicken to another entree is already part of the menu and it's just nachos so you can just place it on top! Lol) That was a bit disappointing... - finally I really feel like they rushed us out of there (even though they were taking forever during their service). It took a long time to order and and get our food so that alone took up a good chunk of time for our reservation. When we were eating, one of the waitresses came up to us and said that the area we are sitting at was reserved for another party and we should try to wrap up soon. Keep in mind, I did make my own reservation and the reservation gave us a time limit to stay, but we were well under her time limit by the time she came to push us out. When she said this we said that's fine and asked for the check. She handed the check to us and then we waited another 10 minutes for someone to grab the check but no one came. We decided to take matters into our own hands and walked up to the hostess stand to pay. - there's limited parking around the area as well unless you get lucky with a spot across the street! read more
