Stumptown is the OG of craft coffee in NYC. They strike the perfect balance of quality, vibe and service. I am basic and have one of their seasonal specialty lattes every time (highly recommend the stick toffee pudding latte!) but for serious coffee snobs they offer pour overs and rotate their beans often. I also love that their drinks automatically use oat milk (without up-charging) unless otherwise specified. I really enjoy this location because you can chill in the ACE hotel lobby after, which is dimly lit and homey. As is the case with every coffee shop in New York, I wish I wasn't paying nearly 10 bucks for a latte. But these are the times we live in. Either way, I keep coming back! read more

Stumptown has a few locations in the city - I was in the area and checked out the Koreatown location on a weekday morning. There wasn't too long a line but most of the bar seating was occupied. I ordered the rose gold latte which was pretty good - while overly sweet for my preferences, the espresso was pulled well and the milk steamed perfectly! The baristas were extremely snippy though which contributed to an unpleasant experience. They called out a different order multiple times, then someone pointed at me and said to pick up my drink. I asked if it was what I ordered (a rose gold latte with oat) and they rolled their eyes at me and said I kid you not "it's whatever you ordered." Then why did they bark out an almond milk latte multiple times? I was extremely confused and while it was indeed my order, felt weird that they were annoyed with me for not picking up a drink that did not belong to me. It's one of those places where it thinks its stuff is so good that it gets a free pass for meh service. I first assumed that the barista simply has RBF but she gave me cold glances more than once even when handing me my drink lol. Anyway, a well-done iced mocha here; super smooth coffee taste with the perfect coffee-to-milk ratio. Could've had more chocolate syrup in it but maybe that's me wanting an uncommon heavy-handling of the syrup. Small pastry display case here but the chocolate croissant that I impulse bought was very tasty (amazing rich dark chocolate shavings in it) and crispy. One-and-done visit for me but if you don't really care about service quality and just want a sorta-pricy-but-still-kinda-warrants-the-price cup of joe then it's worth checking out if you're in the area. read more

This is a coffee shop located inside the lobby of the Ace Hotel. Just like the hotel itself, it has a hipster vibe to it. In fact, both companies are from Portland. The coffee is good quality and better than a chain like Starbucks. As a coffee shop though, it cannot be considered as such. There is no seating at all and it is cramped and narrow. The cafe was almost empty at 7 AM, but the barista recognized and acknowledged my panic and she was so helpful in navigating an appropriate drink for me. She was also super quick in preparing it. The service was impeccable! This location is in the lobby of the ACE hotel, and was rather pretty with elegant wood details and lots of big windows for natural light. There is limited standing space by the windows and no space to sit down. It does seem like a pleasant space to be in and people-watch for some moments. I asked the barista on her opinion of the strongest beverage that I could sip throughout the day, so she gave me an iced latte with a double shot. The espresso flavor was rich, but not as robust as I normally like. Combined with testing anxiety, I think it's safe to say I was pretty wired even after 8 hours of testing! While the coffee is good, I do think the price:size ratio is steep even for Midtown. I forgot to take photos in the rush and anxiety, but I'll probably be back given the wonderful service and experience! read more
