I've been going to her since 2019 and won't trust any other stylist to bleach my hair. I been seeing Jen since I was 19. I couldn't afford it at that age but I'd go with my older sister and I've been going since then . It's been 9 years . She's not just great with balayage , she also fixed a weird mom haircut that someone else had done on me and made it look Edgy and cute . Shes so hard working and talented . I have natural pitch black hair and she patiently works with it to not damage my hair . Her work is 100% worth the price . She also has snacks , an expresso machine, a restroom that's always clean, lots of mirrors for selfies from different angles and she's 100% a girls girl. I love chatting with her while doing my hair which usually takes about 5 hours to carefully process the bleach . Shes the best, never a boring moment. I 100% recommend her for balayage and haircuts . I'm going to cut to the chase here- this woman irreparably damaged my hair. I have had a lot of poorly executed and disappointing color treatments throughout my life, but I have never had someone fry my hair to the consistency of a doll's, and then charge me hundreds of dollars. I came in with the idea of having all over color, as I had a lot of brassy tones in my hair that I wanted to cover up. I showed her pictures that she had posted of her own work, and told her they were similar to what I was looking for. I wanted a cool, dark blonde color. She claimed that could only be achieved by balayage (which I had a bad experience with before, and wasn't interested in). I reluctantly agreed. She worked on my hair for FIVE hours, in between multiple other clients. I am not a fan of stylists who overbook themselves. She kept getting distracted and asked her assistant to finish up with various tasks. As a side note, she and her assistant were both unfriendly, and the salon was in a crusty old medical office building from the 70's, with tweakers parading around the parking lot. Not exactly a high-end salon. Charging Newport Beach prices in Westside Costa Mesa is a reach. Anyway, to attempt to neutralize the red/gold tones in my hair, she essentially bleached it to death. It came out FAR lighter than I would ever want it to be, and in a beige tone that looked terrible with my skin tone. The back seemed well-blended but the front had streaks and chunks of highlights that created an unattractive contrast. I could tell I didn't like it once she had dried it, but it was hard to see the extent until I got into the natural light outside. I was very unhappy. She went a totally different direction from what I was trying to achieve- but the worst was yet to come. A few days later, I washed and conditioned my hair. It felt extremely strange afterwards. So dry and unmanageable, it felt like synthetic hair. Picture a really bad perm from back in the day, and this is what the texture was like. It has been that way since...totally destroyed. It ends up in a rat's nest no matter what I do to it, or what products I use, and is puffy and has a sticky feeling. It obviously couldn't withstand the levels of bleach she put on it, and she, as an experienced stylist, should have realized that! There is nothing to be done now, but wait for it to grow out. I am now left with ruined hair, in a color I don't like, that I wasted hundreds of dollars on. I would RUN away from "stylist" Jen Chavez, unless you want to gamble on your hair being wrecked. read more

Jenny has done my hair twice now and I have another booked appointment with her in a few months :). I love that she was able to push my hair w/o breaking it...because I wanted to go HELLA blonde. My root is brunette, but not black like most asians. I went to 2 stylist before Jenny who were afraid to get me THIS blonde. What she recommended for me was to do a heavy blonde balayage and see where that takes me. I was super happy with my first session, but I am beyond ecstatic about how my 2nd session went. This is as blonde as I can go! So we're going to be maintaining this color :). Jenny is super knowledgeable and uses high quality products. I came across Jenny's work as a stylist on Instagram. I think booked my appointment with her and was beyond excited to get a new look. I asked for a haircut and ash tone balayage. She straight off the bat told me that my hair would not come out exactly as I wanted. I had a picture of work she had previously done on another client. She then proceeded to ask me about my hair and I told her everything, from my first hair dye to the last time I cut it. She said my hair would probably not come out as shown in the picture but that she will give me a look I'll love. As she worked on my hair she was very attentive and talkative. I found to instantly bond with her and we found ourselves conversing for the nearly 5 hours I was in her salon. After she finished my hair I was so pleasantly surprised by what I saw. I basically wanted an ash blonde/neutral balayage/ombre but after scouring the internet, I realized that most balayages/ombres looked really bad with straight hair because there's an obvious transition line (and I wear my hair straight 99.9% of the time). But I came across Jenny and loved her work because most of her photos featured straight hair that didn't have any awkward transitions and it all looked well dimensioned (not flat)! One of my biggest fears was leaving with orange/brassy hair but since I didn't see that in any of her photos, I made and appt and blah blah... Session 1 I came in with dark virgin hair and Jenny told me it would take multiple sessions to achieve the color I wanted. After she was done, I hated it. It wasn't the look I had in mind and it was brassy even after she toned my hair. Jenny told me to come back a couple days later to retone it and it HELPED SO MUCH. I wasn't in love with my hair but it looked so much better after the second toning. At this point, I accepted that going ash blonde/neutral would take multiple sessions and I booked an appt for 2 months later Session 2 Jenny redid my hair and it looks AMAZING. I HAVE MET MY HAIR GOAL. For both sessions, she took her time and did a really thorough job with my hair. She painted it, put me under the dryer, washed off the bleach, toned it, olaplexed me, rewashed my hair, gave me a blow out, and even textured/trimmed my hair (out of the kindness of her heart). Even after the first session, when I hated my hair, she was nice enough to have me come in to retone it to make sure that I liked it. My only gripe is that each session cost ~$170 (w/o tip) which is pretty pricey since there are other salons that do it for $100. However, Jenny put a lot of effort into my hair so that its healthy, not orange, and dimensioned (I don't have to curl it for it to look good). I honesty cant see myself trusting another colorist and even though I've met my hair goal, I'll probably book another session to lighter hehe. read more

I hate giving this review because I'd rather just set an appointment for next week instead of three months later, but she's just THAT GOOD. I've been coming to Jenny for about a year now. She started with dying my hair red. It's now a toned blonde bayalage with lighter roots. After I told her I wanted to lighten my hair to blonde from red, she told me it was going to be a process and it was! This is also including the fact that my hair is incredibly stubborn doesn't help the long process. Jenny is sweet and personable and makes you feel comfortable when you're in her chair. She's also honest too, which is rare for stylists nowadays where you feel rushed and they'll tell you what you want to hear. She is thorough and takes her time. She was even unhappy with the fact that my hair didn't want to lift at all the first time! I even went to another stylist a few months ago because I couldn't wait with jenny. Jenny is honestly one of the most professional and easy to work with hair care stylist I've ever worked with. After hunting for awhile, I found Jenny's work on Instagram and made an appointment. I had to wait a month, but figured, why not. She's always been honest about how she'd be able to work with my hair. I came in with a terrible brassy balayage, and showed Jenny pictures of what I wanted. She told me it might take me a few sessions, but she'd get me there. Then after she applied bleach she noticed how orange my hair lifted and told me it might be really hard to get to where I wanted, just so I was realistically aware. Fast forward a few amazing sessions and I totally have a gorgeous colored balayage that suits what my hair could do while keeping it healthy! Most girls I know go super light, spend hours on the chair and end up hacking off their dry, brittle, broken hair a couple month later! Not me! I've gained about 5-6inches of healthy hair growth, with occasional trims. All the more hair to show off Jenny's awesome work! Jenny's also super professional, she works hard to maintain her schedule (I normally schedule my next appointment at the end of my session), and she's never been late (only one time bc the client before me was late). She has a sweet little shop of her own in the Phoenix Salons, super clean, quiet and surrounded by a bunch of other really great professionals! Jenny is fun to talk with (and ladies, let's be honest-- your time in the chair is the equivalent of girl time/therapy) and so easy to reach out to for hair care advice! I came to get a balayage from Jenny in April of this year. The reasoning behind my 2 stars is that 1) I did not feel the cozy comfortable vibe you usually get with a hairstylist. She explained to me she was tired and was not thinking about coming in this morning.. Now I felt guilty for even being there with her.. Well I understood anyway and that was fine, but 2) I felt like the concerns I had for my hair was dismissed. I had came in with a brassy base therefore I had wanted my base to be darker before any bleacher occurred. When I explained this to her, she had told me that I wouldn't be able to tell anyway so she didn't touch my base and just bleached.... Initially I trusted her so I went along but I knew this wouldn't turn out right. My hair when I was done was basically my original base (brassy) with blonde balayage on top. Terrible! And I had a feeling she knew at the end of our session that it wasn't one of her best works... but she had a client after me so I was rushed out. A few days later I realized I wasn't happy with my hair because my base was STILL brassy. Obviously it would be because she didn't touch it like I had asked. I came in again to get it toned and she said it wasn't her fault because my base was brassy to begin with. Well duh, that was the whole reason why I wanted it done before any bleach came on. Well basically, I have seen the amazing work she's done on Instagram, but I had a bad experience. I felt like she had told me "Changing the base color wouldn't make a difference anyway" though being well aware that my base was originally brassy was due to another client she had booked right after me. It seemed very rushed, and I feel like client's concerns should be top priority... and mine wasn't. read more

Jenny is everything that you would want in a hair stylist! She's sweet and great at what she does! Unlike other salons where the stylist lets you lay on those uncomfortable chair by the sink with bleach in your hair and leaves you there for an hour while working on someone else. Know that when you book an appointment with jenny you will get 100% of her attention because you are the only person in that studio. I've been getting my hair done by Jenny for the past 3 years now. I've gotten a Brazilian blowout (everyone needs to try that!) hair cuts, and my most favorite a Bayalage done. Every time I come in and sit in that chair I don't even need to tell jenny want I want, she just knows, Blonde Blonde and Blonder! I bring my Bellami Hair extensions in for Jenny to match the color and she always nails it! You would think that I would be bald by now because I always bleach my hair but remember when I said jenny was sweet? Well I really meant it because Jenny goes out of her way to purchase me hair products and she even gives me free hair mask and a huge bottle of olaplex to help maintain my hair. I first came to Jenny in April. She came highly recommended by a close friend. I was a little nervous getting my hair bleached because I had spend the majority of the year before fixing my damaged hair and also wondering if my lighter hair would complement my skin tone. Also nervous for doing such a dramatic and bold change! Jenny is so great at what she does that she eased those nerves away!!! I walked out of the salon with a great blended balayage ombré!! I had never felt that happy walking out of the salon with an end result as I did that day! And my hair was still very smooth and not the crazy damage I expected from the bleach!! Prior to my sessions with Jenny, I have never had a balayage/ombré done to my hair. So I did my research and consulted Instagram and Yelp for days, in search of the perfect hairstylist! I am so happy that I eventually found Jenny's profile (@jennyamber) on Instagram. I found her so much more appealing that the other hairstylists I was considering at the time because she literally has hundreds of photos of the work she has done. Great reviews on Yelp are good, but being able to see the actual work is even better! I had to book her right away. On her Instagram profile is a link to her StyleSeat page (https://www.styleseat.com/Jennyamber), where you can view a list of the services she offers and book appointments! I recommend booking her through this site, because it is quick and easy to do. Her salon is located in room #18 at Sola Salons, basically a venue of multiple suite salons in Huntington Beach! The room is small but extremely clean and decorated; well-stocked with hair products and a Keurig 2.0 coffee machine. Jenny is very friendly and I find it easy to engage in conversation with her on a number of different topics. I am probably one of her youngest customers, yet we always have so much to talk about whenever I come in. She definitely knows what she is doing and works very meticulously. Whatever she does is in your hair's best interest! She is also knowledgeable in hair products too, so ask her for recommendations and where to buy them. She has certain products stocked in her salon, but she won't try and force them on you! If she recommends the Wet Brush, BUY IT. It might seem like just another brush, but it's not..it's a miracle worker, especially for thicker, coarse hair that gets tangled easily. I bought one from her and it has become my hair's best friend! ~~~ BALAYAGE SESSION #1: - I booked Jenny through StyleSeat and received an email from her within the same week to confirm my appointment and provide her with my phone number! What is great about her is that she does consultations through text messaging, which is extremely convenient so that you don't have to make a trip to the salon. I sent her photos of my current hair, as well as photos of what my ultimate goal for my hair is. - She emphasized the fact that I wouldn't get my end goal after the first session, and I was totally fine with that. Balayage, ombre, color correction, and other hair coloring processes are just that...A PROCESS. You can't expect to walk out with your ultimate hair goal after just one session; it takes multiple sessions! Keep this in mind, it's really important to know :) - The process took about 4 hours! I paid $175 total for the balayage, toner, wash, and blowdry + $15 for a haircut. Sooo worth it! - She made the subtle change that I wanted and it turned out perfectly! BALAYAGE SESSION #2: - For this session, I wanted to go lighter and bring my highlights up a bit higher on my head. While my first session was for more of a subtle change, I wanted to go a little more dramatic/dimensional on this second one. Jenny did just that, and executed it perfectly! - I never thought I would look good with lighter hair, especially because my hair's natural color is a super dark brown. (I'll photos to this review when I get the chance!) ~~~ Three things I was looking for, when I was searching for a hairstylist: quality work, great reviews, and a reasonable price. This would be my very first review posted on Yelp since I've joined the app. It took me quite sometime to stumble upon this page. I'm a self-proclaimed perfectionist so it was really difficult for me to find the right stylist to work with. But when I came across Jenny's work, my long search was over. I just wished I knew her back then when I first dyed my hair. I couldn't ask for a better stylist. The artistry on each client's hair shown is such a masterpiece and will speak for itself. I was a first time client and she made me feel very comfortable. She's very attentive towards her clients needs and requests.
