Highly recommend the whale watching tour! The captain and his crew member were very kind, knowledgable, friendly, and entertaining. They had a lot of interesting facts about the local area and animals and they were extremely compassionate towards the guests who became sea sick. The second they noticed someone was feeling ill, they would go over to them and ask if they were okay, bring them water, napkins, and ginger chews, give tips and tricks on how to feel better, stay with them, and clean up after them. They were on it. There was lots of space on the boat and plenty of seating options. You could sit inside (do not recommend if you're prone to motion sickness), in the back (smoother ride), or at the very front of the boat (very choppy) and can move around as you please, as long as you keep at least one hand on the railing. And yes, we got to see quite a few whales, sea lions, sea otters, and birds! The whales were a bit tough to find at first but once we did, My God, it was rewarding and absolutely magical. Can't wait to go again! Keep in mind that as amazing as these people are, they have 0 control over the animals' whereabouts, the ocean's conditions, or the weather. Odds are, the water is going to be choppy at some points and it's going to be cold so do your research ahead of time and come prepared. I recommend taking dramamine ahead of time and bringing some with you along with some binoculars, hand warmers, and gum, and dress in LAYERS. As in a tank or tee underneath a thermal, a sweater, and a thicker jacket plus a beanie and maybe even a pair of gloves. And there is totally a chance that you may not see any whales! That's the name of the game and is how it is with EVERY single boat tour out there. It's not a zoo -- It's mother nature and she is unpredictable so don't go blaming this lovely company if you happen to go on a day where things aren't going as well as you'd like. They try the best that they can. Thankfully Morro Bay is full of wildlife so it doesn't happen too often. Just keep your fingers crossed! read more

Definitely an amazing experience. We went for the first time the boat crew was very patient and informative. There were both babies and dogs on our trip which didn't seem to bother them. We got about a solid 2 hours just watching the whales. It was a bit scary at first because the water out there is very choppy but they gave a lot of information and kept us interactive the whole time and eventually it wasn't scary anymore. This is so highly recommended! We had a fantastic experience all the way around on our tour. It didn't hurt that we had lovely sea conditions, but more than that was the vessel was spanking clean, and comfortable and the staff were top-notch in every way. We learned all about the migration of the whales we saw, and how best to look for them. Seeing the whales was beyond thrilling for everyone aboard. And the captain was careful not to crowd the animals while still providing the best possible views for the customers. Also we learned the actual names of the whales we saw, and where they have been sighted in the past. It adds a dimension of admiration for them. All the staff were warm and welcoming and we thoroughly enjoyed being in their company. The size of the vessel was perfect for viewing whales from all sides, but small enough to feel almost like you're on a private boat. When I called to let them know, a friendly lady answered the phone and assured us that they will wait for us. The crew was very friendly, professional and knowledgeable. I've been on whale watches from Hawaii to Maine. This was the best hands down!! Of course, it's all a matter of timing and yesterday was the perfect storm of amazingness. Huge areas of fish being fed on by hundreds of sea lions, birds, and whales. I've never seen anything like it!!! It was a small group of about 15 on the boat which is nice too. Our group of 4 went whale watching for the first time. We saw 2 whale tails go down and never saw them again :( But, we did get the chance to see dolphins so that was nice. It was a long trip but the weather was awesome, no clouds in the sky. Our guide and captain were great, they were knowledgeable and funny, answering everyone's questions. We did the 45 minute Sub Sea tour with our 10 year old son and 7 year old daughter on Saturday 8/7/2021, we want to do a whale watching tour but thought this would be a good start to see how the kids would even do on a boat. Our Captain was awesome (I believe he said his name was Dakota, but I could have misheard) he was very knowledgeable about the bay and the marine life and other stuff in the bay. He answered all questions that guests had and was very engaging and friendly. We went around the bay then over to their "secret" spot where he put some fish food in the water and then we had a chance to go below deck and see the fish through the windows. I was hoping to see more below the water than just the fish (which we were told were Smelt) but they can't control the marine wild life. My son was so sad when the boat ride was over, time did go by very fast but we were out there for 45+ minutes. The water was very calm, just a slight rocking at times but nothing that would make anyone sick. We will definitely be back, maybe for the whale watching next time. read more

I've gone whale watching with these guys twice now and our most recent trip on Saturday was awesome!! We booked the 12 pm whale watching tour for a group of 7 online the night before. $45 - Adults $40 - Students Generally people say to go early in the morning for more marine life activity, but we saw an exorbitant amount of activity on our trip so don't worry at all if you book the 12 pm tour. As we exited the area where the boats are docked, we saw otter scattered around. Passing Morro Rock, we saw a variety of sea birds and then headed out to the open ocean. As we headed out even further, we saw the signs that would lead us to whales. A large circle of seagulls and groups of sea lions. It was fascinating to see the sea lions jumping through the water as a group, but even cooler to catch the spouting of the whales. We ended up seeing 6-8 whales and the naturalist and captain of the boat were very friendly and nice, educating us as we went along. Overall, an awesome trip that I would definitely recommend doing if you're in the area, passing through, or don't mind driving the 3.5 hours down from the Bay Area. read more

Great short tour in the bay for families with younger children up to about 10 years. Saw a few otters close to the boat cracking mussels on their bellies, two moms with babies, a raft of seals piled on top of each other, and fish feeding could be seen under water (sardines) up close. The only thing other than water that could be seen in the below water view were the fish being fed and the kelp that caught on the frame streaming behind as the boat moved. The kids loved being below together and it was quite loud with their voices echoing off the metal and glass below. read more

I've made it my mission to go whale watching twice a year after the amazing tour with Sub Sea Tours in September 2018. We were incredibly close to a group of Humpback whales, and it felt like we're in a National Geographic documentary. We saw them feeding, poking their heads out of the water to look at us, and even a young male doing a full breach in the distance. It was an amazing, life-changing experience. That time, we went out with the small Katamaran, which was cold but truly enjoyable. It felt very adventurous! This time (March 2019), the team took us out with a bigger boat to find Grey Whales off the coast. After just 30 minutes we found a young male that was swimming around Montana de Oro, and we stayed with him for about 45 minutes. He couldn't dive very deep where he was, so we mainly saw his puffs of water and his back a few times. Then the boat went on to find a group of whales, and it was truly magical. About 5 or 6 of them were on their way North, and swam fast in deep water, which meant many more puffs and many backs poking out of the sea. We didn't see a tail or breach, but nevertheless it was incredible to be so close to these giants and see them on their way to Alaska. I really appreciate the team of the Sub Sea Tours, which is determined to find whales while respecting their space. They provide interesting information about the whales during the tour, and are always friendly and smiling. Thank you - we'll be back! read more

We had so much fun!!! Captain Mario was awesome on the Sub Sea tour. We did the 45 minute tour that stays in the protected harbor area, so not too much motion and not too long of a time commitment. The pricing was very reasonable and actually a great value for the overall experience. Mario's narration was funny and informative. He was familiar with the area and the animals and answered any questions we had. We saw sea lions, otters, and fish on the tour. Most of the tour is on deck, but there is a point where we went downstairs to view the fish from below - it's tight quarters, so we went in groups, but it was nice because while some were below watching the fish, others are above feeding the fish, and it's an overall great experience. The stairs down are a little narrow, so hold onto the rail tight. Overall, it was a great experience. My kids really enjoyed getting a chance to feed the fish. read more

Having gone on several whale watching cruises around the world, I can surely attest to the good job this crew at Subsea are doing in making sure they do their best in making their clients happy. Right from the time of our booking, to checking in and registration until the end of the trip was a smooth and pleasant experience. We found Subsea Tours rated fairly well on both Yelp and TripAdvisor so decided to go with them. We booked our tickets online on a Friday night for the tour on Sunday. We were fortunate to find availability for five seats at such short notice. Booking was simple and straightforward and it was a pleasant experience completing the transaction on their website online. They require all customers to check in a half hour before the tour. Registration was a simple process writing our name and phone number on their log. They also gave us a discount on the spot since one of the passengers was a student which was quite nice of them. Tickets were $40 per adult for approximately a two hour tour. Though the crew does their best to find whales there are times when none can be seen. But I have always seen whales on every tour I have taken. We boarded the boat five minutes before departure and took our spots. Seating is first-come first served. There is only a emergency restroom on board so please use the restroom before embarking. This was a small boat with a capacity of probably 20 to 30 passengers. Both the captain and our tour guide went over the safety features of the boat. Though there is no best area to sit on the boat I normally prefer the front at the bow. I thrill in the bobbing of the boat as it traverses the swells! We saw lots of Sea gulls, sea lions and even a mama sea otter with a baby on her tummy. The captain directed the boat towards the horizon where we could see a lot of birds flying in the air. All of us tensed up with adrenaline flowing faster. And then I said "Thar she blows" to a spout of spray about a quarter mile from us! And then another and yet another. We were apparently very close to a pod of humpback whales. The captain slowly made his way closer to the whales keeping at least 500 feet between us. It was simply amazing to see these huge beasts swimming gracefully in the water. Every so often, one would come up to the surface, blow a spout of very fishy breath, stay for a couple of minutes before diving back in with the huge tail flukes flashing up for an instant before disappearing. One unique phenomena I experienced for the first time was that when the tail disappears beneath the surface, it leaves behind a surface of relatively calm water clearly distinguishable from the surroundings. Apparently called a foot-print but more like a fin-print to me! Over a period of 90 minutes we saw 3 groups of whales which was just an awesome experience. We also came across a really large group of sea lions cavorting and jumping around fishing and having fun! The grand finale was when a juvenile whale came up next to our boat just about 15 feet away, stared at us with its huge eye for a moment and then with the swish of its tail it disappeared beneath the surface of the water. Just an amazing experience. Worth every penny and some more! The guide had a few models of different kinds of whales, dolphins and porpoises and passed them around when explaining specific features. He also passed around books sharing details about the whales and their life cycle. He seemed knowledgeable and loved what he was doing. The captain was an experience guy with many years of experience traversing these coastal areas. Overall it was a safe and fantastic experience watching the giant whales in such close proximity. I signed up for the 3-hour whale watching tour. This was an excellent experience and I really enjoyed it. The tour guide and captain were delightful and knowledgeable and really cared that we saw whales (and other sea life) as fast as possible and for as long as possible. Professional, on-time, safe and fun. I would do this again in the future and it was worth the price tag. At the end of the day -- it's a cool boat ride whether you see whales or not! Having said that, it can get cold and you are chasing sea beasts. If that bothers you, don't sign up and then come back and complain. PRO-TIP: Bring a jacket and wear a sweater underneath. A hot drink with a resealable cap would be ideal as well. read more

We participated in the sub sea tour. It was okay. The let down was only being able to see one kind of fish from below the boat. Nothing else. Anyone who thinks theyre gonna see a mass variety of sea life will be in for a rude awakening lol still enjoyed it. But not enough to go back. Staff was nice and friendly. But for me experience was 3 stars. Its not a bad deal if you have kids. But we dont have kids so the experience was different. But i Would reccomend if theres little ones. read more
