The tour was great and we ended up seeing a few whales and got several good tail pictures. The captain and the crew were very knowledgeable about the habitat and whereabout of the whales. Getting on the boat:My kids are under 12 and needed life jackets so we ended up being last on the boat. There was no place for 3 people to sit together so i was standing with my son (10) near my daughter (11) who was sitting. I asked the boat driver if it was ok if we stood up and he said sure. Then the lady who was giving all the info got on and said " we have people standing already? There's a seat over there and over there..." i was really annoyed because i paid just as much as everyone else and you expect me to not sit with my kids?! We ended up sitting on something that was not a seat but close to my daughter. I was very annoyed but didnt want to make a scene or ruin it for my kids. Out seats weren't terrible but the weren't great either. My tip to you... if you want to sit together, dont be last on the boat! Whale watching: one word- Amazing! We seen over a dozen whales and even a group of dolphins on our way out to the whales. Oh. And a few jellyfish. The lady gave us a bunch of great info about them and answered any and all of our questions. She did say what we saw was not what every boat trip is like. Sometimes they just see 1 or none. We really were lucky to see so many. I highly reccomend taking the early morning trip and going during summer since they are feeding so much. The lasy also gave us pretzles when we started feeling a little nauseated from the sea. I would do it again but just be quicker to get on the boat. read more

Alright - this review is in two parts. Whale Watching -5 Stars: We chartered this boat for our family to scatter my grandma's ashes at sea. The guides were knowledgeable and sensitive, and we loved our trip. We went in late November, and saw a pod of dolphins, sea lions (a given), and even one baby grey whale. It was a magical experience. Highly Reccommend Sub Sea Tours: 1 Star: I remembered this tour being amazing when I was a kid. They took us out into the kelp and we saw and learned about the marine life. Nowadays, the boat never leaves the harbor. Our less-than-enthusiastic guide puttered around for us to see the sea lions, and then put some fish food in the water and told us we could go downstairs and see the fish under the water. Then he puttered about 12 feet away and we saw some otters. We didn't see anything that we couldn't have seen from shore. We left the boat feeling sorry for the people about to go on the next tour. Total waste of time and money. read more

Yesterday I took my kids on the sea sub tour. It was a beautiful day loved being on the water. You get a chance to get real close to the sea lions. We seen tons of otters. On a recent "last getaway" with my husband before our baby is born we adventured to Morro Bay and took a whale watching tour with them. It must have been the perfect day too... sea was glass and not a wave in sight. We started out visiting a group of otters hanging out in some kelp... and for as many whale watching trips as I have been on, I have never seen an otter in the wild... it was such a treat. As we headed out to see we instantly found a family group of humpback whales and followed them around for about an hour. Afterwards we got up close with Morro Rock and then headed back in. From start to finish the tour was 3 hours and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend this tour.. and for 50 dollars for 3 hours the price can not be beat! read more

Wonderful way to spend a Sunday morning. We were a group of 5 people, ranging from mid-50's to 80 years old and we squealed like children seeing the whales just outside Morro Bay. Cost was reasonable, crew was fantastic. We saw sealions, otters, and whales. Water was a bit choppy, but the crew offered ginger candies to those feeling nauseous. The tour guide was super friendly and knowledgeable about morro bay facts during the tour. She also allowed my 2 nephews and other kids on the boat feed the fish. This is a good sub tour for the younger kids 5 and under. Myself as an adult enjoyed the ride, but I do think it's more of a child's tour. Most of the time is spent above the boat looking at sea otters and about 15 min is spent underneath the boat looking at fish as seen in my photo. Great price for the experience and recommend choosing a different tour for adults. read more

Felt disappointed on our first whale watching experience. They favored 1 side of the boat which we noticed alot. But... Not saying we wouldn't recommend the trip, The best time to come out is around may thru november when whale activity is at its peek. I don't ever leave Yelp reviews but my family's experience yesterday made me feel obligated. My family of five had an outstanding time on the 3-hour whale watching tour. Not only were the guides super friendly and attentive, but they were extremely knowledgeable about the area and the marine life. Best of all, we followed three whales for what felt like the entire time and the family had a blast. We've been on a number of whale watching tours in Southern California, and have never even seen any whales. While they can't guarantee you'll see whales too, this was by far the best experience and well worth the money. read more

I wish I looked online and saw Jill's review before I went on this tour. Luckily, I only went on the subsea tour and wasted 45 minutes of my time. So the "sub" was a boat with windows below deck. And the tour consisted of the captain or another passenger dropping fish food overboard and schools of silver fish swarming through eelgrass to eat the food. Save your $7 and go to Chinatown and see the same thing in one of the tanks. One star, since the kids actually go a kick out of it and since the captain told us some good stories about slimey eels. Morro Bay seems to be a dying tourist community since the fishing community seems to be non-thriving. It's a shame, since it's actually a cute waterfront town. Still, we were here during one of the last weeks of the summer vacation... and there were very few families around. read more

The service was good, as in making the reservation and timely follow up. The tour was HORRIBLE. The ocean was very choppy the day we went out, and supposedly, they had a scout that had already gone out to see how it was. The "captain" was good-natured and funny, but this is a fairly realistic version of our experience: SST Captain --- to other captains: "G'day. Any whales out there? If you see one, please radio" [Because I have a boat-load of suckers who have paid $30 each to see a whale] Other Captain: "Saw a whale about 2 hours ago near the blah-blah buoy" SST Captain --- to guests on board: "Okay, there was just a whale up North just a hour ago, we'll head that way." [2 people get sick on deck and we continue on in the incredibly choppy sea] SST Captain --- to other captains: "G'day. Any whales out there?" No response. SST Captain --- to guests on board: "Weather's not so great, but we should find something soon here. Just keep scanning for a tail, a spout... etc." And we remained on the scarily choppy sea for another two hours. Chasing a whale not-to-be-found. I could have probably dealt with all of this as a "life experience", but getting back on dry land we were handed pre-printed tickets for a future cruise. Huh? I appreciate the gesture, but if you actually have a pre-printed voucher for a future cruise, how often do you really encounter a whale? Go to an aquarium. Forgo the people vomiting all around you. Enjoy 3 hours of your life somewhere else. read more

Great fun! We went on the group whale watching tour and it was amazing. We got pretty lucky that day and saw a lot of whales. They practically swam up to the boat. We also saw sea lions and dolphins. Definitely an adventure!!! It wasn't the best season to go... It was in between migration BUT we saw a bit of everything!!!! Dolphins, basking shark, grey whales, and the tail of a humpback. The captain and his assistant (Dakota) were a great team! We had not planned a whale watching trip and our desire to go was pretty spontaneous. It was a bit pricey, but comparable to what would be paid other places (and less than what you pay going up to Monterey)... All in all TOTALLY worth it!!! read more

Just finished a 45-min tour on the semi-submersible boat with my mom and brother...while the tour is not too pricey, I do wish we had read reviews on yelp before getting on the boat! My Lonely Planet on California recommended Sub Sea for its tour of underwater kelp forests, which sounded like a nice thing to do with the family. Sadly, there were no lovely kelp forests to be seen, only a school of jack smelt fish and a couple of sea lions sunbathing on a pier. Unfortunately, this isn't very impressive since seals are a common site in the SF Bay, and smelt aren't the most 'exotic' fish around. Apparently I was expecting too much! The tour brochure also said the trip would be narrated...the 'captain' answered our questions, but didn't do a whole lot of narrating without being prompted for it. He was also on his cell phone for a while in the beginning of the trip, which was a little awkward. Some positives--making reservations was easy, student and senior discounts are offered, and staff were nice. We had good weather on our tour, so at the very least we got a chance to coast through the bay under sunny, blue skies. If you go on this tour, make sure you have low expectations! Otherwise you'll end up feeling like I did--ripped off:( read more

Excellent service. We got there at 10am ready to rent kayaks but when they saw us they mentioned that had a 10 man war canoe. The kids were so excited, we couldn't pass it up! The canoe was so much fun And I would definitely recommend it. We saw harbor seals swimming all over and we were lucky enough to see otters. We even saw an otter breaking open a clam and eat it. Such a great experience. If you rent a canoe, war canoe or otherwise, make sure you have people willing to paddle :) read more

The staff of Sub Sea Tours was the best! Keith welcomed us when we were checking in and made the experience very comfortable! And our captain was funny and friendly! We went on the whale watching tours and for our family of 4 it was only $200 for the 3 hours. We hadn't seen any whales yet, but for word their were 2 further south from where we were, they checked with everyone to make sure we were okay getting back late because they wanted us to get to see whales. And it was so worth it! Ended up getting a couple extra hours which totally adds to the value. They really care about their passengers and our enjoyment of the trip!! We arrived in Morro bay and picked a flyer for this boat tour company nearby. Our kids thrilled at the idea of seeing sea life in a glass bottom boat, so my husband made reservations for the 4:00 trip. We arrived at the dock a few minutes early to find the captain telling us the 4:00 trip was cancelled, because we were the only passengers. What?!?! Punish us, because others didn't want the tour? Are you kidding me? How unprofessional. Find another company to deal with, because this one might bring tears to your kids' eyes. read more
