I love all the Subpar locations for mini golf! The courses and holes are always SO cute with great decorations and really fun/interesting designs. This one is 18 holes for $14 per person. There's also a small arcade, some billiards tables, and a food stand. My friends and I had a great time with all of the activities. The only downside to subpar is that they only have 1 course at each location so it can get really busy and you might have to wait for the people in front of you to finish first at each hole. read more

We love coming here to play indoor golf. It has 19 holes w/ all the iconic places in the east bay. They are always busy on the weekends, so I recommend making reservations online. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. We recently went to an after-dark event. It was fun with all the lights lit up. But it looks like they need to update some of their lights, as there were a lot that were out. I definitely recommend if you like indoor miniature golf. It's pretty challenging and not too easy. They have arcades, laser maze and pool tables, too. A fun place for both kids and adults. read more

Subpar is a nice little jewel in Alameda. I decided to go to check out Subpar in Alameda this past Sunday with a few friends and it was...... fun. I really enjoyed the 18 (technically 19) East Bay themed landmark holes. Now let me give you the deets. It is located inside the old Walgreen's building off of Park, which means there is PLENTY of parking available at any given time. It's best to make a reservation online because the wait time can be extremely long. I believe it is $14.00 per adult and $11.00 per child/senior. This place is very family friendly and great for children's birthday parties as there were several going on while I was there. If you're not interested in golf, there is a small arcade to keep your child's attention as well as a laser maze and pool tables for adults. They do not allow outside food and beverage, but I think that's because they have a station where they serve food and Boba drinks in case you get hungry or thirsty. Things I didn't like about the place.. There is no real waiting area. They should put benches along the wall at the front entrance (inside and out) for you to wait for your time or reservation. Again, it is VERY family friendly and if you know kids... they're a bundle of energy that not even parents can control sometimes; and with miniature golf, there is a lot of waiting. One thing I'd suggest they implement is the '6 and done' method. Meaning you get 6 tries to get the ball in the hole before you move on. I believe a lot of the lag comes from people giving it limitless tries and it holds up the other games so kids end up jumping holes and it causes even more of a hold up because you don't want to be mean and ask someone's kid to move along. It can also be VERY loud in there depending on the amount of kids. Be mindful of that. There were also a few instances where the 'theme' was damaged - for example the propellers on the energy fan were completely gone. -- (edit) they put it back on today! Good job! I'd also implement an 'Adult Only' play time on certain days. Maybe host that from 8:30pm-11:30pm. I think that would be a great date night, adult fun place without having to worry about kids. Overall it was a really good experience and I plan to return. read more

This review is for the party package. I booked the large room for my son's first birthday. Booking was easy and involved an email exchange and some signed forms. Supbar mentioned that we get an extra hour for the arcade and my party was slotted for 11am-2pm. I planned accordingly - putting those times on the invite and renting a soft playground during those times. Three days before my party, Subpar emailed me and told me that there was another party booked at 2pm and we would have to leave the room by 1pm. Going through our email conversations and contracts, nothing stated that we had to leave the room early. This definitely threw a wrench in our plans and I had to scramble and let the soft playground rental know of the change (eating $ already spent). On the day of, Subpar kept us on a strict schedule. Golf first, then food, and then arcade play. I believe this was to manage their incoming customers versus my guests. This put pressure on us throughout the party, I had to send my arriving guests directly to golf and ultimately, kick my guests out of the room an hour later. For the last hour, we had access to the arcade but my guests and their families were spread out across the venue, making it difficult for us to socialize. Customer service did their job but did not go above and beyond. Sadly, we were treated as one of many burdensome parties that day. Food came out quickly but someone had mentioned that the pizza was a bit undercooked. It's such a pity because Subpar really is a nice venue (even my guests complimented on how cool it is!), but the party package was definitely not worth the $$$, especially with the unclear contracts, pressure to adhere to a strict schedule, and confusing room situation. I hope Subpar will improve its party experience, otherwise, I would suggest another venue. read more

I was introduced to Subpar through a Yelp Elite Event and was so impressed I had to bring my family + bf all the way to Alameda ^_^ They loved it! I recommend purchasing tickets for your chosen date ahead of time! It gets busy on the weekends-- you can also change your reservation online as long as it's at least an hour ahead. Subpar's facility is pretty large, enough for the individual holes to host up to 6 players. After checking in at the front desk, the staff provided us height-appropriate putters and directed us to select a ball of our choice (never used this type of machine before....... My parents were amazed). The course takes around 1.5 hours to get through, maybe longer if there's a backlog of golfers. We were between two large groups, which meant we had a bit of a wait ahead of us, but had no worries about the group behind us catching up LOL. It was much more relaxed than Urban Putt in SF, where you feel like you're constantly rushed to finish before the people behind you are up next. The holes are based on bay area landmarks, most of which we'd been to before. If you're stuck on what the landmark is, the back of your scorecard has info on each hole. Each were challenging enough to be fun, but not rage-inducing. My personal favorite is the roller coaster based on the SC Boardwalk :) The last hole gives you a chance to win a free round if you hit the target! I would definitely recommend Subpar for any age group and occasion. read more

I love the variety of activities available at this place. From mini golfing to the food area, private rooms, air hockey tables, and arcade area, there's something for everyone. It's the perfect destination for both rainy days indoors and beautiful days outdoors. My son had an absolute blast here. The bonus of having food options and even hard cider for the parents is a smart move. The only downside I noticed was the number of people playing mini-golf simultaneously. It would be great if they could stagger the groups to allow others more time to play. We had to wait for a while, which was still enjoyable, but my son's short attention span didn't allow him to wait longer than 20 minutes. Overall, I highly recommend bringing your kids to this place. They're guaranteed to have a ton of fun! PS: The arcade is inexpensive, so you get more value for your money. read more

This place is actually pretty cool! I came with my mother-in-law and my 4-year-old (almost 5). We played one round of golf and spent some time with the arcade games. The arcade games are kind of lame, but my son really did love skee ball. You can win "tickets" which get added to your arcade card, then you scan the card at the prize machine to choose your prizes. The arcade games, though, should not be the reason you come here. The mini golf course is actually really cute. Each hole is themed for something around the bay area. They're not too hard, but not too easy, either. My son really enjoyed it--we ALL did. We came on a Saturday morning/sometime around noon. There were a couple kids who were celebrating a birthday, too. It seemed like a good place to celebrate a birthday, with plenty of tables inside. I came here with some friends around noon and there wasn't a lot of people inside. The price to play was $14 for each adult for one round of golf which was 19 holes. Just make sure everyone in your group gets a different color golf ball from the ball machine. This was my first time ever playing any type of golf. I thought it was relaxing and I had fun. I really liked how each hole featured a different Bay Area landmark. My highlight moment came on hole #7 when I got my first and only hole in one. I didn't have any aim when I hit the ball so it was just beginners luck. The arcade, pool tables and laser maze were the other fun things to do. Time really flew by for me and my friends as we were here for almost 4 hours. They do have a place to buy food and drinks but their menu had limited options. I thought there were better places to eat at and within walking distance since we were already around the Park St area. The staff here did a great job of keeping the place clean. I was even surprised with how clean the restrooms were. The glass windows with the afternoon sun shining through really helped brighten up the place. Such a fun place for a break during the weekday or on the weekends. Each hole is creative and references things in the Bay! This includes the Oaklandish tree, the buildings in Downtown Oakland, and the shipping containers that you see when you're driving on the freeway. It's never been too busy here, even on the weekends. It's a really nice and clean facility that provides a golf course that's much more entertaining than most for children, especially with the VW Beetle car and other things. Too bad the final hole had a strobe light that wasn't working at the time (supposedly you get a "free ball" if you go through it but sadly didn't seem to be active at the time) Another plus is the pool tables, that allow children to try playing, as well as the numerous arcade games. Reasonable prices and The displays were so cool and I love reading the history behind each one on the score card. My husband and I brought our 4 grand kids here and we were able to take advantage of the Senior Wednesday prices (good thing I asked before he rang it up because he said he would have totally forgotten about it). The kids played arcade games while we waited for their 2 neighbor friends to show up. We didn't play with the score sheet, as it was chaotic with 5 kids under 12 and one teenager. We had caught up to a large party that had at least a 15minute head start, so we skipped 2 holes ahead with the intention of going back and replaying the holes we missed. The younger kids didn't bother going back to the holes (too impatient), but the teen and seniors played all the holes. I like that all the holes are representative of Bay Area icons. Was the elephant for the Oakland A's?? I missed what that represented. Afterwards, we had two games of pool going, and lots of arcade games were played with the $25 cards we filled to play. All the games were in working order and there was a good variety. We would've eaten here, but our favorite Chinese restaurant is just down the street, and that trumped trying the food here. How cute is this place? Came on a Tuesday without a reservation and it wasn't needed. $14/pp for 19 holes that take ~90 minutes to play. All of the holes are Oakland/Alameda/Berkeley themed and it's so fun getting a little tour of the area especially since I just moved here! The kitchen was not open when I was there but there are cheap fried appetizers, beer, wine, and soda. I'm not sure what their kitchen hours normally are. There are also tons of arcade games, 3 pool tables, and 2 pinball machines. They also had a laser maze escape room that I had never seen before but it's small and I saw someone quickly finish it. Easy parking, lots of room to hang out with a large group. Love all the plants, they're real!! Cute family idea and something different to do than going to the bars. The closing time is wrong on the site, they closed at 9:00pm and we're adamant people leave then so be careful when you start your game. People had to leave before they were able to finish. read more

Subpar has returned to Alameda in the old Walgreen's on Park. It's a perfect rainy day outing for families and made for a fun afternoon for my favorite teens and tween. I chilled in the bar area with my brother and sister-in-law while the kids golfed around cool miniatures of Memorial Stadium, downtown Oakland, the Alameda bridge, Fairyland, and othe Bay Area locations. It was $11 per youth and there is no entry free for parents. Reservations are a must as we watched a young couple turned away. There are also arcade games and air hockey. Love the spacious parking lot in the back! Once we took a tour of the golf courses, pool tables, carnival games, video games, laser tags &etc. Theres actually a lot to do here, which I didn't expected. It said "miniature golf," so it was a nice surprise to find way more activities then I expected. My friend and I decided to go with the pool table, since it was closing in 30 minutes. Glad we got a table, because it filled up fast. It was super easy to buy a game card at the machine, and swipe it at any games we liked. We finished our credit by playing basketball together. The place was clean, and there's free lockers for your belongings. There are many toilet stalls for all genders, which I'm not use to seeing a guy using the same lavatory as me. I had to wait for customer service for a while to get our pool sticks. Other customers was lost as me, and thought I worked there. read more

Went out on a date night to this miniature golf course, it was cute! Loved the course since a lot of the decor has to do with sites around SF. The service was really good and the staff were nice. Subpar is a a fun place to get together with friends and family, or host kids parties. They serve food, drinks, including beer and wine. I love that each course is tied to a part of East bay history, and you get to learn some fun facts while playing the course! There is also a small arcade and a VR booth (never used this) that seems to be closed a lot of the time. I'd recommend making a reservation online on a rainy day because it can and will get packed or sold out. The bathrooms are clean and I appreciate the open basins to wash your hands. Parking is easy and free in their adjacent lot. The only downside is it can get extremely crowded and loud when you play on a sold out day. I had a family party at Subpar. It seems everyone had a great time including me. I needed a place t have the Annual Cat Days of Donna Summer Party which is the name of my summer dinner. there are 18 hole plus a bonus 19th hole. There is parking, an entire lot shared by other businesses plus street parking. The place was very busy. I am happy for Subpar that they are so successful! They do have food and I would call it food that teenager eat. I wanted to have a room to myself but the cost was too much for me and that is what you must do to bring your own healthy food. We succumbed to ordering the pizza and tater tots and similar foods. We went to dinner afterward but only some of us did that as many were pooped after the golf. Golf does take energy and as we seniors get older we feel the affects of the 18 holes. No Joke! I highly recommend treating the family to this. What I would do differently next time is have dinner first. This we I don't loose anybody in the process and I get to socialize with all of my guests next time. Another plus is that they do sell alcoholic beverages. The ambiance is a bit noisy and not too noisy, after all, there is a ton a laughter during the game. It's a blast. read more

My boyfriend and I came here to use up some time before dinner and we were immediately helped out by a friendly guy at the service desk. He advised that we start at hole 2, ahead of a group of 8 so we wouldn't be stuck waiting since larger groups take longer to play than smaller ones. We really appreciated his advice and the great service he gave us. We also had a great time playing through the 19 holes which took us about 30-45 minutes. The miniatures are cool representations of local iconic landmarks around Alameda. We didn't try the food so our rating doesn't count towards that but we had a fun experience overall. If you go with the intention of not mini golfing, but your kids playing, it's a 2 out of 5. Someone older than 10 wants to mini golf --- NO. 1) Not only was it not cool like Urban Putt in San Francisco. It wasn't even age relevant like Urban Putt in San Jose. It was over run by wild children like a Chuck E Cheese who gave away free donuts every hour. We love kids and understand they need grace for being less aware than adults but WOW. Initially, a group of kids excitedly jumped in front of us. Their parents noticed it and apologized and we said it was fine (to get an apology was quite a rare occurrence). Then, while we were in the middle of a hole, a kid decides to play, completely oblivious to us. I tried to kindly get his attention but he was zoned out. His Dad got him but I did not feel compassion and understanding but annoyance that we dared to play our own hole On another hole .... again, while we were playing, another kid starts playing ... oblivious to us. As he walked by, he kicked and bumped my ball. I looked for Dad and he was FAR OUT OF HIS LINE OF SIGHT. I watched that kid and he eventually linked up with Dad. And he wasn't behind us in line ... the child just wanted to play this hole again. The whole time kids rambunctiously jumped in front of us but several parents get a shout out for doing a good job and explaining to their children to wait their turn. In fairness to the kids, the atmosphere was "kindergarten field day" and not orderly structured business. But "fairness to kids" is also "harsh rebuke of their parents". There wasn't a 10 to 1 kid to adult ratio (as far as I could tell), just lazy, rule-less parents barely noticing their kids act horribly. 2) The kids were rowdy and this wasn't a one time thing. Many were swinging their putters too aggressively and every putting start point was frayed and curled up from all the kids who missed on their big swings. 3) the creativity of the holes at the mini golf were fun designs for kids. A "subpar" for a standard mini golf but HORRIBLY designed for practical use. Balls, we're flying around, CONSTANTLY. In fact, this was part of the atmosphere of children running everywhere On this point, I can't blame the kids entirely. Because it happened to me. There was a hole with a bridge, the ball had to jump the bridge and I wasn't sure how much power to give it and I accidentally sent be ball flying and it ROCKETED to the wall next to several kids. I felt horrible because if it hit a kid, it was head height and would have stung. I was so afraid of over doing it on my next shot, I purposefully didn't clear the bridge. --- it is possible my adrenaline was higher from the mayhem of kids running around so I take the blame for hitting my ball too hard but it's also a poorly designed hole. If I did that just because I misjudged and was mildly less than relaxed (truly, I love kids and understand it's not their fault). Any kid with any coordination would do the same. Our balls popped out of the putting space a lot (for us, it was just a foot away from the space and not across the whole floor like the children). I don't have kids but I have nieces and nephews and LOVE to hang out with them. I will not come back to Subpar, for myself or to bring my nieces/nephews, I don't want them to think it's ok to act like that in public. read more
